Abstract:
The article attempts an integrated analysis of the creativity of the “Logos” group activities of the emigration period on the background of the literary process of the first half of the twentieth century. The aesthetic, religious and national principles that underlie the multifaceted activity of the “Logos” are considered. The “Logos” group should be described by six writers: Hryhor Luzhnytsky, Olexandr-Mykola Moh, Stepan Semchuk, Petro Sosenko (junior), Vasyl Melnyk and Roman Skazynsky. Hryhor Luzhnytsky is the author of more than 500 artistic, scientific, popular scientific works, numerous journalistic works, reviews, essays. After leaving for the United States in 1949, the writer continues his activity and takes on adventure and sensational and spyware. Vasyl Melnyk (Limnychenko) is a “writer-wanderer” and a “political emigrant”. Beyond the borders of his native land continues to write poetry (“Ode to the book”, “Ballad about the Truth”, “Ballad about White Letters”, “Ballad about the Sun in the Bridge” and others). A certain generalization of the writer’s life experiences was his journalistic works “Ukrainian Crusaders”, “Religion and Life”. A peculiar “bridge” between poetry and journalism became essays. Stepan Semchuk − a poet, a journalist, a publicist. Becoming a priest, Stepan Semchuk leaves for Canada, but he does not cease to write there. Out of his native land he published poetic collections. Stepan Semchuk worked as an active publicist, author of the historical and literary articles. Association of catholic writers “Logos” was occupied noticeable place in literary life of Western Ukraine of intermilitary period of the 20th century. “Logos” writers expressly declared that they were the creators of Catholic literature, and tried to outline the concept of “Catholic worldview” and “Catholic literature”. Ideological principles of “Logos” were a christian moral; the main tasks were popularization of religious subject and christian ethics. “Logos” writers literary works are skilful collage of biblical images, motifs, allusions, reminiscences, christian ceremonies, symbols.

Abstract:
In a vigorous theological controversy, William Bishop, English Roman Catholic theologian educated at Oxford, Rheims, Rome, and Paris, took on William Perkins, the best-selling English Protestant writer of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The two writers were formidable champions of their respective religious traditions. As I will argue, this was a significant exchange, though the dispute has been little noticed by historians of the period. The issues the two writers discussed and the way they discussed them throw considerable light on the state of English religion in the early seventeenth century. Bishop emerges as a more powerful and effective spokesman for the Roman Catholicism of his day than has been heretofore recognised.

Nicolson, Murray W. "The Irish Experience in Ontario: Rural or Urban?" Articles 14, no. 1 (2013): 37–46. http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/1017880ar.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to respond to several new theories which, if accepted, could alter the historical perception of the role played by urban centres in the adjustment of Irish Catholics in nineteenth century Ontario. Donald Akenson, a rural historian, believes that the Canadian experience of Irish immigrants is not comparable to the American one. Akenson contends that the numerical dominance of Protestants within the national group and the rural basis of the Irish community, negated the formation of urban ghettos and allowed for a relative ease in social mobility. In comparison the American Irish were dominantly Catholic urban dwelling and ghettoized. In addition the new labour historians believe that the rise of the Knights of Labor caused the Orange and Catholic Irish in Toronto to resolve their generational hatred and set about to form a common working-class culture. This theory must presume that Irish Catholic culture was of little value to be rejected with such ease. The writer contends that neither theory is valid. In the ghettos of Toronto the fusion of an Irish peasant culture with traditional Catholism produced a new, urban, ethno-religious vehicle — Irish Tridentine Catholism. This culture, spread from the city to the hinterland and, by means of metropolitan linkage, throughout Ontario. Privatism created a closed Irish society, one they were born into and left when they died. Irish Catholics co-operated in labour organizations for the sake of their family's future, but never shared in the development of a new working-class culture with their old Orange enemies.

Abstract:
In 1933, a twenty-five-year-old writer named Richard Sullivan articulated for himself the qualities a novel should have. In a “Record of Work Begun and Ideas for Stories,” 1932-1933, he wrote:Let all be adoration. 9-14-33a novel must be—?American—constantly; of course, naturally.Scope—heights to depths; and length also: a lifeReligious—naturally; how else?Bitter—like life; intermittently. When he wrote these words, Sullivan had not yet published a novel; the publication of his first short story in a national magazine was still three years away. He eventually published six of his novels and dozens of short stories while teaching English at the University of Notre Dame from 1936 to 1974. Few people have heard of him or his work, and, at first glance, his life looks commonplace, even prosaic—he never lived farther than one hundred miles from his birthplace and seldom traveled; he taught at the same place, largely the same courses, for thirty-eight years; he wrote and published for almost forty years, coming tantalizingly close to major success, which nonetheless always eluded him.

Abstract:
Abstract In the netherlands regional novels have never been considered as real literary works. in Flanders regional literature had a better status, especially because several writers of the Van Nu en Straks movement such as Stijn Streuvels wrote about regional themes. in Czech literature since 1848 regional themes was viewed as important in novels and stories, mainly till the end of world war ii. in 1932 the Catholic writer Antonín Matula defined the so-called ruralism, which became a movement of mainly Catholic writers from the countryside. Most of them were severely persecuted in a constructed Stalinist show trial against the green international in 1951. in his work Hlasy země v evropských literaturách (The Voice of Earth in European Literatures, 1933) Matula discussed nearly all major european literatures, i.e. Flemish regional writers. it is no coincidence that especially Flemish writers such as ernest Claes, Stijn Streuvels and Felix timmermans, were translated into Czech during the second quarter of the 20th century.

Abstract:
Flannery O’Connor is one of the modern spiritual writers and is identified with labels like Catholic writer, Hillbilly Thomist, Southern novelist, grotesque stylist etc. She deserves another equally convincing label–O’Connor the Mystic–her claim to be considered a mystic being based on the many instances of the description of mystic experience and the operation of grace in her motifs. Flannery O’Connor highlights her religious outlook of God in a nontraditional manner and allows others to obtain grace through her literature. Though faith underpins all of her work, she does not use it in a didactic manner as a medium to preach. Her short stories can be viewed as a search for redemption in Christ. These stories are quests which involve the hero’s recognition of his vocation and end in his eventual ordination. There is an initial rebellion against belief, a crisis in faith, and a resolution in a ‘moment of grace’ in her stories. For O’Connor, the very act of writing was itself a redemptive process. Though O’Connor’s works follow the features of Eastern as well as Western mysticism, the present study concentrates on the Christian mystical elements in O’Connor’s “Greenleaf” and “The Lame Shall Enter First” as O’Connor was a Catholic writer.

Abstract:
This article examines the liturgical life of the “Underground” Greek Catholic Church through the example of the life of the prominent priest, writer and poet, Roman Bakhtalovskyy, CSsR. After 1946, the Soviet government in Ukraine prohibited the activity of this Church. Therefore, the sacramental activity of Greek Catholic priests was performed in complete secrecy until 1989. The analysis of archival criminal cases is an important source of research during this difficult period for the Church, in which pastoral activity was a pretext for arrest and imprisonment, and sacred objects were seized during searches. This article analyzes in detail the criminal case of Fr. Roman Bakhtalovskyy, which was opened by special services in 1968–1969. The confiscated objects of analysis provide valuable information about the liturgical activity, devotional practices and spirituality of that period of persecution of Catholics in Soviet Ukraine which coincided with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and their implementation elsewhere.

Abstract:
The article constitutes a biography of a religious writer, born in Tarnów, educated at the universities in Cracow, Italy and Germany, a scholar and clergyman. He attained certain ecclesiastical dignities (the canon of Wilno and Sandomierz, the parson of three parishes), however, first and foremost, he achieved fame and recognition as the writer of two Latin texts. Both texts were created in defence of the Jesuit Order, at that time greatly attacked because of their uncompromising nature in fighting against the Protestants residing in Poland. In particular, the second text of Kasper Cichocki, “Alloquiorum Osieciensium”, became widely known in Poland as well as in Europe. Due to the fact that the text targeted the then reigning king of England and Scotland, James I Stuart, it met with acute diplomatic opposition from the court of London, who demanded a severe punishment for the author and a public burning of his work.

Abstract:
The Czech writer Jan Cep (1902-1974), one of important mediators of French-Czech cultural relations between the two World Wars, was forced to emigrate after the Communist coup in 1948. As Cep was the friend and translator of Pourrat and Bernanos, he naturally chose France as his adoptive homeland. Nevertheless, exile in Paris turned into a harsh existential ordeal for Cep. Difficult material conditions, linguistic disunity, and the fact that his writing was not accepted by a new audience made Cep an outsider in a French literary life. This status led to his increased involvement in the Czech émigré community, especially work on the Czechoslovak editorial staff of Radio Free Europe, where he developed his essay style in meditations infused with Christian humanism. The autobiographical essay My Sister Anxiety, written in French in the 1960s, repesents a summary of Cep’s life and ideas
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the role of written texts in processes of identity construction and maintenance in a Catholic parish community. It is based on a critical realist understanding of society which sees social practice as the locus of continuity and change and requires detailed observation of social activity explained within a theoretical framework to achieve an understanding of the mechanisms at work in society. Social practice is understood as "habitualised ways, tied to particular times and places, in which people apply resources (material or symbolic) to act together in the world" (Chouliaraki and Fairclough 1999: 21). Social practices are drawn on and continued in social activity, a process which articulates four moments: material activity, social relations and processes, mental phenomena, and meaning-making processes. These moments are not understood as being discrete but rather as existing in dialectical relations of reciprocal intemalisation. Language and literacy are analysed in terms of their embeddedness within this model of social practice. Identity is conceived of as particular ways of being which are realised in social activity as people engage in particular social practices. Within this framework, the study analyses data consisting of written texts and fieldnotes describing the practices within which those texts were embedded, which was collected during a year's participation-observation in three domains of a Catholic parish community, using a grounded approach. Three concepts are developed to explain the role of text in each of these domains: recontextualisation of identity, negotiated legitimation, and synchronisation of communities. These mechanisms are then explained in terms of the social contexts within which they are situated. Finally, the role of these mechanisms within social practice is analysed. It is argued that in each of them, the crucial role of written text is to provide an intertextual means by which relational links can be made between different communities and different elements of individuals' identities.

Mitras, Joao Luis. "Postmodern or post-Catholic? : a study of British Catholic writers and their fictions in a postmodern and postconciliar world." Diss., 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18636.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the nature of the 'postmodern' narrative strategies and fictional methods in the work of two British Catholic writers. The work of David Lodge and Muriel Spark is here taken as an example ofthe 'Catholic novel'. In order to determine ifthe overlap ofpostmodern. and Christian-influenced narrative strategies constitutes more than a convergence or coincidence of formal concerns, narrative form in these novels is analyzed in the light of neo-Tho mist and Tho mist aesthetics, a traditional Catholic Christian theory of the arts. The 'postmodern' in these 'Christian' texts becomes largely a coincidence of terminology. Narrative forms which can be classified as 'postmodern' can also be categorized using the terminology of Thomas Aquinas. The apparent similarities betray radically divergent metaphysical presuppositions, however. The nature of the Catholic 'difference' lies in the way postmodern forms are used to challenge the metaphysical bases of those forms.
English Studies
M.A. (English)

Abstract:
The present study deals with interconfessional exchange of oratorios in German-speaking countries during the 18th century. In doing so, it pursues the goal of focusing on the question of the denominational or non-denominational nature of the sacred music genre, a question that has so far been insufficiently discussed in musicological and literary research. It analyses selected oratorios between 1715 and 1781 which were written at important contemporary musical locations and were received interdenominationally (Hamburg, Leipzig, Brunswick, Catholic imperial court of Vienna, Catholic Saxon court at Dresden). The study comes to the conclusion that the oratorio of the 18th century was not defined solely by its denominational orientation, but influenced by a number of other factors reflecting the intellectual-historical upheavals of the Age of Enlightenment: contemporary musical aesthetics, socio-cultural developments (middle-class concert business), and fundamental religious-historical dynamics that led to a distancing from dogma and to a change in piety practice.

Abstract:
In Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, 85 per cent of adults are unable to read or write, even in local languages. Adult education programmes can be a route to improving adult literacy rates, but non-governmental organisation (NGO) and government schemes are characterised with low enrolment, high dropout, and poor teacher attendance. In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Catholic Relief Services, the Sahel Group, and Tufts University, regular phone calls and motivational support were given to teachers to encourage and monitor attendance of adult education programmes between 2018 and 2019. The impact of this project directly led to improved reading and maths scores. Based on this evidence, the approach has been tested by the Ministry of Education in primary schools.
