MINDO-force calculations have been performed on phenyl and cyclopropyl substituted allyl cations and anions with complete energy minimization. It is found that the phenyl ring destabilizes the allyl cations when substituted at the terminal and at the center carbon atom of the cation, while the cyclopropyl ring stabilizes the allyl cation when substituted at the terminal carbon atoms, but destabilizes the cation when substituted at the center carbon atom of the cation. These results agree with the experimental ones. In the case of the allyl anions, it is found that the phenyl ring destabilizes

The problem with which this research is concerned is the determination of inorganic anions and cations with single injection ion chromatography. Direct detection of the separated analyte ions occurs after the analyte ions have passed through ion-exchange resins where they are separated according to their affinity for the ion-exchange resin active sites. The techniques involve the use of essentially a non-suppressed ion chromatographic system followed by a suppressed ion chromatographic system. With this system it is possible to accomplish both qualitative and quantitative determinations.

Most inorganic ions have weak absorption profiles in the UV-Vis wavelength range. Abstract A new technique was proposed for estimating the pH of concentrated aqueous solutions in equilibrium with high pressure H2S and CO2 from ambient to elevated temperatures. The effects of co-existing anions (carbonate and sulfate) and cations (alkali and alkali-earth metal ions) were taken into consideration through their influence on dissociation equilibria as well as on activity coefficients. The physico-chemical parameters were obtained by thermodynamic estimation; the H2S and CO2 solubility constants were calculated by a Correspondence principle, and the dissociation constants of H2S

Abstract PBTC, a proven scale inhibitor, is more and more finding use in corrosion-inhibiting cooling water formulations. In order to investigate the inhibiting mechanism of this compound, steel test coupons were examined using ESCA and Auger spectroscopy (with depth profiles) and scanning electron microscopy. From these methods it was found that the inhibitor effect is based on the formation of very thin films of insoluble, amorphous, water-free PBTC-Ca+2 -Fe(III) compounds. The influence of several factors on the formation of these films will be discussed including the surface conditions of

Abstract The growth of anaerobic bacteria such as sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) produces dramatic changes in the mild steel/solution interface which include variations of the redox potential and pH values, anions and cations concentrations and the composition and structure of inorganic layers, among others. Complex equilibria between different iron compounds are established. These equilibria are markedly altered during bacterial growth. As a first aproach to the understanding of the complex scenario at the biofilm/surface interface, electrochemical techniques including different perturbation

Abstract Sulfate reducing bacterial (SRB) influenced corrosion of carbon steel has been studied to determine the role of corrosion product/biofilm interactions on the electrochemical behavior of the metal. The influence of sulfides, chloride and ferrous ions on the electrochemistry processes has been assessed by using various electrochemical techniques. Corrosion products were analyzed by energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDAX), X ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron probe microanalysis (EPM). Microscopic observations of the metal surface were made by usin

Abstract:
The U.S. team studied the role of cations and pH on thermolabile (TL-PE) and thermostable (TS-PE), permeation in ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, affinity to ion exchange membranes, mechanism of cation and pH activation, and effect on PE stability. An optimum pH and cation concentration exists for activity and UF permeation, which is specific for each cation type. Incomplete release of PE from a pectin complex resulted in low PE binding to cationic and anionic membranes. Incubation of PE at low pH increases the surface hydrophobicity, especially TL-PE, but the secondary structure of TL-PE is no
