The rise of the Isthmus of Panama is one of the major biogeographical events of the Cenozoic. It is a massive natural experiment in biological migrations, as lands formerly separated—South America and Central/North America—became connected. There is, however, a difference in timing between the final closure of the Isthmus (4.2-3.5 Ma) and the onset of the massive mammal migrations (i.e., Great American Biotic Interchange, GABI, 2.7 Ma). This time lag has been brought up to suggest that other factors rather than a land connection were major drivers of the GABI. A large biome change from forest

Abstract:
This paper presents the research of mollusc communities in the floodplain of Hamerský potok Brook (Nežárka River tributary, South Bohemia, Czech Republic). Altogether, 42 mollusc species (39 species of gastropods, three species of bivalves) were recorded in the study area during the research in 2015, representing 17% of the total Czech malacofauna. More than a half of all species represents common forest species, but several sensitive woodland species as Causa holosericea, Ena montana and Macrogastra plicatula and the vulnerable wetland species, such as Euconulus praticola were a

We present the first records of the Truandó Toad, Rhaebo haematiticus (Cope, 1862), in the inter-Andean valley of the Middle Cauca River, Colombia, the second largest inter-Andean basin of the country. In Colombia, this species has been extensively documented in the Chocó biogeographic region, on the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental, in the valley of Magdalena River, and the foothills of the western slope of the northern Cordillera Oriental. Our records help fill an expansive hiatus in the known distribution of this species and increases the number of amphibia

The Calima River Basin is part of the Chocó Biogeográfico Ecoregion in the Pacific Coast of Colombia. Here, we compile a bat species checklist recorded for the Basin and describe the bat diversity patterns found in the mid-Calima Basin (the gradient from 300 – 1,400 m a.s.l.). The checklist comprises 55 bat species for the Basin. In the mid-Calima, 31 bat species occur (permanently or seasonally). Our results show complementary diversity patterns of bat assemblages living below and above 1,000 m. We also identified an overlap zone between 800 – 1,200 m a.s.l. where at least three pairs of sist

The Magdalena watershed in Colombia is the most densely populated and economically important region in the country. While Colombia is generally classified as a water-rich country, it is expected that water shortages will occur in the future without adequate planning and investments in water management infrastructures. Currently, even though all instruments required for an integrated water resource management are present in Colombia, they are employed independently from each other and thus not very efficient. To estimate the potential benefits of a more coordinated water management planning, es
