This paper re-examines the intended meaning of the term six horses (liuma) in Du Fus poem Raising the Banner (Yangqi). Through an analysis of both its symbolic imagery and literal description, and in light of Du Fus political thought, Tang dynasty conceptions of six horses, and the flag policy of military governors during the Guangde era, the paper argues that the term does not refer to the metaphorical six-horse imperial chariot, the image of six horses raising their heads for feed, or the misreading of five horses and one dapple-gray horse as suggested by earlier scholars. AbstractThe expansionist policies of the early colonial regime led to a significant emphasis on the importance of a large cavalry, but horses of a suitable quality appeared difficult to obtain within the subcontinent. Several measures were consequently taken to encourage horse-breeding, including the establishment of government studs and policies directed towards the creation of a ‘native’ market in quality horses. However, these measures did not appear to produce any significant results, despite sustained implementation. This paper examines in detail colonial policies on horse-breeding and li

In modern Britain a knight is a gentleman, usually over fifty years of age, who has been rewarded with the appellation ‘Sir’ in recognition of his services to administration, business, the arts, or some other field of public endeavour. Most knights have probably never ridden a horse in their lives. The title of Aristophanes’ play, by contrast, refers to the men, probably all young, who rode horses for their service in the Athenian army. Cava

Abstract:
On the occasion of the centenary of the First World War, remembered across the world from 2014 until the end of 2018, many aspects and experiences of this global conflict have been re-examined or brought to light for the first time, as we honour the memory of those estimated 16 million soldiers and civilians who perished in what was then known as the ‘Great War’, or the ‘War to End All Wars’.
