This article dwells on the role of armoured vehicles obtained under the Lend-Lease agreement in the Byelorussian offensive operation (Bagration) in the summer of 1944. The author examines the use of foreign armoured vehicles in combat operations as part of tank, mechanized, and cavalry units of the Red Army and evaluates their quantity and quality. The Lend-Lease armoured vehicles participated in combat operations on all four fronts involved in Operation Bagration. Primarily, these were British Valentine Mk III and American M4A2 Sherman tanks. However, a significant contribution was also made by the SU-57 and M10 self-propelled artillery, as well as by the M3A1 Scout Car. In addition, the troops continued to use a certain number of M3 Medium and M3 Light tanks left over from the previous periods of the war. In 1944, they were no longer supplied. Foreign vehicles showed a good performance both in terms of reliability and combat qualities, in particular manoeuvrability, armour protection and firepower. Importantly, it was in the units advancing in the main direction that the number of Lend-Lease tanks was the largest (in the 1st Mechanized (100 %) and 3rd Guards Mechanized (91 %), in the 3rd Guards Cavalry (82.5 %) and in the 8th Guards Tank (59 %) Corps). In smaller numbers, foreign tanks were also available in the line units of all fronts involved in the operation (1st, 2nd and 3rd Byelorussian and 1st Baltic Fronts). In total, foreign tanks accounted for about 1/3 of the entire Soviet tank fleet in the Byelorussian offensive operation.

TNI is the main component of national defense which is tasked with implementing state defense policies in order to maintain state sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). In order to realize the achievement of its duties, the Indonesian Navy requires adequate facilities in the form of the main weapon system (Alutsista). Marines as a component subsystem of the Integrated Fleet Weapon System (SSAT), are required to have high and reliable operational readiness capabilities. The success of the Marine Corps in carrying out its duties is largely determined by the units under it. One of them is the Cavalry Regiment which has an important role to support the main tasks of the Marine Corps, therefore the Cavalry Regiment's ability is needed in fostering and preparing the operational readiness of Cavalry elements both personnel and material in order to carry out Military Operations for War (OMP) and Military Operations. Apart from War (OMSP). In carrying out its duties, functions and roles, both as a unit that operates and maintains the operational readiness of amphibious lander combat vehicles. Before carrying out the Tempur Exercise, it is tested for feasibility and certification tests in order to minimize the occurrence of accidents. This study to see the effect of airworthiness testing and certification on the safety of Marine Corps personnel and materials with quantitative methods and data processing with the SPSS 25 program. Non-Probability Sampling the sampling technique used is incidental sampling. 237. The results of this study are that there is a positive and significant effect between the feasibility test on the safety of personnel and materials with of 3.417 and a t-table of 1.970, there is a positive and significant effect between certification on the safety of personnel and materials with 6.219 and t-table 1.970, there are positive and significant influence between the simultaneous feasibility test and certification on the safety of personnel and material with 118.249 and f-table 0.051. The value of the correlation coefficient is 0.709 which is declared strong or 70.9% and the value of R2 = 0.50.3 which means that it is 50.3% while the remaining 49.7% is influenced by other variables outside the model studied.

The staters (didrachms) of Larissa were struck from 15 obverse dies and are differentiated by typology and legend configuration into three groups. Type I, known from just two specimens, features a crouching horse reverse. Type II depicts a trotting stallion and comprises two sequences – Series A and B. Die linkage shows that most of Series A was struck using two to four anvils concurrently to speed production. The entire coinage of staters was minted during a short period of time in the mid-4th century BC. It is argued that Series A represents cavalry pay for the joint Macedonian and Thessalian army commanded by Philip II in the Thessalian campaign of c. 352 that culminated in the battle of the Crocus Field, and Series B represents cavalry pay for his subsequent operations in Thessaly.

The estates of the Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom, as it is well known, took an active role in the struggles of the Thirty years’ War (1618‒1648) on the Habsburg dynasty’s side. At the request of the monarch, many aristocrats and wealthy noblemen, who had been trained in the so-called small wars (German Kleinkriege) practised along the Ottoman border, raised especially light cavalry units and conducted them to the territory of the Holy Roman Empire. Nicholas VII. Zrínyi/Zrinski (1620‒1664) the Croatian-Slavonian ban-to-be (1647–1664) himself recruited cavalry companies in three successive years (1642–1644), at the head of which he fought in Bohemia and Moravia against the Swedes as well as in upper Hungary against the troops of George I. Rákóczi, the Prince of Transylvania (1630–1648). Moreover, he was appointed as the supreme commander of the Croatian-type cavalry two times. The present gap-fi lling paper primarily aims to clear the chronology of Zrínyi’s field operations in these years. It also reveals his probable motives, the characteristics of the negotiations with the imperial high command as well as the gathering of the troops. The case study will enable us to draw conclusions about the military entrepreneurship of this kind, giving an impetus to the research of this neglected field of early modern military history.

Introduction. The article analyzes historiography and history of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division, the only ethnic Kalmyk (largely) military unit that was engaged in active combat operations during the Great Patriotic War. However, despite its huge contribution to the heroic struggle against invading troops the unit — worthy of decent memory and respect — got surrounded with defamatory myths that bear no relation to actual events. Since most of the Division’s documents submitted to archives had disappeared, it took several decades to objectively examine its history. Materials and methods. The historical genetic method being a principal one for the present research, the latter also employs historical systemic and comparative methods. The sources analyzed are books and articles, official documents and correspondence from various archival repositories, personal messages and memoirs by veterans of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division and researchers of its history. Results. The article is a consistent review of the unit’s historiography that may be divided into five stages to be designated as follows: 1) period of silence and lies (1943–1957), 2) period of ‘sporadic’ studies (1957–1967), 3) period of active scientific work (1967–1977), 4) period of indifference (1977–2011), and 5) period of new scholarly interest (2011 to the present). The Kalmyk Cavalry Division has long been an object of defamatory insinuations and calumny when it was accused of ‘unreliability’, denounced as a ‘gang’ or even as German collaborators — these had clearly political implications. Meanwhile, the historical research was seriously complicated by the loss of most of its documents although after the disbandment those were duly handed over according to inventory lists along with the banners. This severely obstructed the process of preserving historical memory of the only ethnic Kalmyk unit that fought against the enemy during the Great Patriotic War. Hence, the difficulties that scholars in the field have had to overcome were immense. Part One of the article covers stages one to three. Conclusions. Historiography of the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division may be described as a difficult and winding path, with periods of both oblivion and activation experienced.

In August 1920 the turning-point operations of the Polish-Soviet war took place. A battle was fought at the Wkra, Vistula and Wieprz rivers, which led to pushing back the Western Front troops of komandarm Mikhail Tukhachevsky from Warsaw and breaking up of part of his forces. The same month, in the southern section of the front, the Polish Army defended Lviv against the attempts of komandarms Alexander Yegorov and Semyon Budyonny. In the fights for Lviv, the Polish troops confronted the forces of the South-Western Front, including the legendary 1st Cavalry Army, which was the main force of the Bolsheviks intending to conquer the capital of Galicia. The Polish command, having no reserves at its disposal, directed the 3rd Air Squadron of Major Pilot Cedric Faunt le Roy to fight against the „Horsearmy”. Despite the strength of even four escadrilles at its peak (5th and 6th Reconnaissance Escadrilles, 7th Fighter Escadrille and, with time, 15th Fighter Escadrille), between 9–19 August it had in fact only a few operational planes. In spite of this, the Polish crews were tirelessly performing their tasks: reconnoitering enemy forces – their intentions and composition – and, most importantly, delaying their march. In this article the author describes the composition and tasks of the 3rd Air Squadron, and the course of its fights against the 1st Cavalry Army in August 9–19, 1920. He also drew attention to the combat tactics of Polish aviators, which he analyzed accordingly

The article examines the processes of the gradual introduction of cavalry troops based on the “barbarian model” into the Chinese army to counter the nomads near the northwestern borders of the empire. The author gives some examples from the written sources of the Zhanguo and Qin Dynasty periods, presenting the gradual transformation of the role of the horse rider as a separate combat unit, but also in combination with chariots. During the Han dynasty, the immediate threat from the Xiongnu by the borders and the need to secure trade routes to the West were the impetus for the reorganization of the army in general and the cavalry in particular. In order to study the peculiarities of horse use for transport needs and military operations in the north-west of the Western Han empire, besides the chronicles, documents of administrative and commercial content – bamboo slips with characters, hanjian, were being used. They were found in large numbers in border fortresses and can significantly supplement the information from the written sources of the Han period and make it possible to reconstruct not only the specifics of inner workings of the northwestern prefectures of China at the turn of the eras but also the peculiarities of horse use for the needs of postal service, patrols and the internal everyday life of garrisons.

Much has been written about transitional justice in the circumstances of organised states progressing towards democracy. Another category of transitional justice demanding equal study and resolution has, however, emerged. That is the interim administration of justice in the vacuum of the disrupted state following traumatic internal conflict, usually involving war crimes and crimes against humanity. Two things are characteristic of this circumstance: first, the requirement for a deployed international military force to do ‘something’ about fundamental law and order while waiting for the civil administrative ‘cavalry’ to arrive; second, the fact that a civil administrative element will eventually have to take over from the military and will also be required to do ‘something’ about the immediate law and order problem but in a manner that leads into the long term reconstruction and ‘end state’ process. In the future, this environment may also include the operation of the International Criminal Court (ICC), where many issues of jurisdiction, investigation, prosecution and the impact on long term rehabilitation will need to be managed.

For nearly a hundred years after its creation, the French Foreign Legion consisted exclusively of infantry units, supplemented only temporarily by “mounted” infantry units, depending on the needs of the theatre of operations. These units did not exceed the size of a company, and their members used their mounts (horses, mules, camels) only to move around, and continued to fight their battles on foot. Based on this positive experience, the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment was created in 1922, and was then successfully deployed in Syria and Morocco between the two World Wars, and with varying effectiveness in France, Tunisia and Germany during the Second World War. The First Indochina War broke out in 1946 and the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment joined the conflict in Southeast Asia in 1947, only to leave in 1955 as one of the last French units. During the war, the ranks of the troop, composed mainly of foreign nationals, were reinforced within a short time by a significant number of local soldiers to alleviate the permanent shortage. In addition, depending on local geography, the unit was equipped with armoured and amphibious vehicles, and sometimes ships, which were used to develop new tactics and operate effectively in these new and very different circumstances. In view of its successes, the unit was greatly improved, originally consisting of 7 squadrons, and by the end of the conflict it had grown to 18 squadrons.

The warships used by the Sasanids were troop ships used exclusively to carry soldiers to the theatre of operations, although it is possible they deployed merchant ships to carry cavalry. In the basin of the Indian Ocean, the Persians used the vessels of the local Asian type (so-called dhow), whereas in the Mediterranean they utilized ships of Byzantine design (sailing-rowing dromons and chelandions). The total size of the Sasanian fleet is unknown, but it can be assumed that naval squadrons numbered from a few to several dozen ships. The Byzantines enjoyed naval supremacy, which was one of the most important reasons for the Sasanid defeat in the Persian-Byzantine war of 602–628 and, therefore, for the future conquest of Iran and all the Near East by the Arabs.

During the Second World War, several Cossack units served in the German armed forces, and their movements and combat operations were already the subject of scholarly research and popular historiography. Contrasting the majority of published works, based on German military sources and focused on deployment and anti-partisan combat activities, this paper aims to analyze and showcase the First Cossack Cavalry Division on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) from a perspective of civilian victims and Croatian authorities. Such perspective portrays the Cossacks as uncompromising and exceptionally efficient fighters against communism and resistance, but also as undisciplined villains, leaving the trail of crimes, robbery, rape, molest and murder of civilians. The paper is mostly based on unpublished historical sources from the Archives of Yugoslavia and the Military Archives in Belgrade.

By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet armed forces were no match in overall power terms to the fully mobilized Wehrmacht, but in terms of the number of major weapons they surpassed it. By the summer of 1941, they totaled 5.7 million people. Ground troops of the Red Army included 303 Division 3 separate rifle and 16 airborne brigades. However, all of them, except the cavalry, were in the process of reorganization and formation and were unprepared to repel aggression. Incompleteness of reforms and a number of other reasons, led from the first days of the war to serious losses in the ranks of the Red Army. To make up for the losses it was required to mobilize significant resources, a substantial part of which has been lost in the abandonment of the western Soviet territories. The situation at the front in the first month of military operations required to supply the army with new compounds. In view of the fact that the mobilization plan did not provide for the formation of new compounds, it had to solve the problem from scratch. In addition to organizing training it had to urgently address the issue of creation of new military units. The task has been assigned primarily to internal military districts, including the Siberian Military District. In general, during the Great Patriotic War in the Siberian Military District 4 tactical formations, 43 infantry and 6 cavalry divisions, 30 infantry, mortar and ski teams were formed. Many of them have distinguished themselves in battle and have been awarded orders and honorary titles Guard names.

ABSTRACT The present work had the objective of detecting the occurrence of Equine Piroplasmosis in horses housed in the 3rd Guards Cavalry Regiment (GCR) - Brazilian Army (BA) ˗ Porto Alegre, RS-Brazil, as well as to demonstrate the proactivity of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technique, aiming at the judicious use of the resources involved in the training and employment of Equines in the Brazilian Army. Fifty horses of the 3rd GCR - Porto Alegre ˗ RS, which are employed for Sport, Military Ceremonial, Law and Order Guarantee Operations (LOGO), were evaluated by means of the 18s r RNA screening with PCR technique, thirty eight horses with Babesia Caballi and Theileria Equi were detected, which corresponds to an incidence of 76% of the horses effective analyzed at the time. In this way, it can be verified that the Military activity have its "performance and effectiveness" factors threatened in case the health of the principal of his means employed, that is the horse, is compromised. The PCR technique then offers a reliable and feasible tool for the detection of Equine Piroplasmosis in BA horses.

This paper proposes an investigation based on the experimental method to know what the material culture was like around the military chivalry of the 11th century (1020-1080), when this feudal institution appeared. The study reconstructs elements of civil and military use, and implements a process to learn how the cavalry acted in military operations, tactics and techniques, alluding to militar technology, war horsemanship, biomechanical conditioning factors and the limitations of the historical method to explain the chivalric phenomenon in its functional aspect. In the same way, it proposes an approach by which experimental archeology can be taken into account in educational budgets based on the results obtained. Este artículo propone una investigación a partir del método experimental para conocer cómo era la cultura material en torno a la caballería militar del siglo XI (1020-1080), momento en que tuvo lugar la aparición de esta institución feudal. El estudio reconstruye elementos de uso civil y militar, e implementa un proceso para conocer cómo actuaba la caballería en operaciones militares, tácticas y técnicas, aludiendo a la tecnología militar, la equitación de guerra, los condicionantes biomecánicos y las limitaciones del método histórico convencional para explicar el fenómeno caballeresco en su vertiente funcional.

Victory open new theatre of the operations against High Porte: towards river Danube and on the Polish territories lost in 1672 (Podolia with Kamianets-Podilskyi and Right-bank Ukraine). Polish and Lithuanian troops were very weary after the campaign, what’s more death of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki led to interregnum. Polish command decided to set up the system of border defence, to protect country until the election of new monarch, which should later lead to the new offensive. As such cavalry detachments were spread out in Podolia and Moldavia, while corps under command of Mikołaj Hieronim Sieniawski, Crown Standard-bearer was sent to occupy the latter country. Previous research mentioned that this group had between 6000 and 8000 soldiers. Thanks to document from National Library in Warsaw, we can now identify much more detailed organisation of Sieniawski’s force. He had 48 pancerni banners and two light horse banners, in total 5206 horses. Despite capturing Iași, capitol of Moldavia, Sieniawski’s troops were forced on 17 January 1674 to retreat to Poland, under pressure from the fresh Tatar attack. Despite of the withdrawal from Moldavia, border defence system was still functional and Commonwealth managed fairly quickly to elect new king.

The article highlights the issue of the appointment of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich (the Elder) as Commander-in-Chief of the Danube Army by Emperor Alexander II on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 on the basis of published sources of both official and memoir nature, as well as some archival data. The myth created by Marxist historiography that the Grand Duke had a narrow outlook in military affairs, had neither combat experience nor experience in organizational work, was mediocre, incompetent, etc., is debunked. Meanwhile, Nikolai Nikolaevich received an excellent education, he was taught by the best specialists and professors of that era. He acquired his first practical knowledge of the war and experience as a military engineer in the Crimean War, during the defense of Sevastopol in 1854–1855. The subsequent activity of the Grand Duke in the field of army reform, primarily in engineering and cavalry service, convinces of his undoubted organizational abilities, deep knowledge, true state scope and innovation. He enjoyed great popularity among officers and soldiers of the Russian army, which was greatly facilitated by his character and attentive attitude to people. He knew the upcoming theater of military operations and the future enemy — the Turkish army, because he was able to combine a pilgrimage to the East and the Holy Land in 1872 with reconnaissance purposes. Alexander II, taking into account the totality of the merits of his younger brother, as well as being fully confident in his honest performance of duty, in 1876 appointed the Grand Duke as Commander-in-chief of the Danube Army. At that time, there was no personality equal to him or higher in his qualities as a military commander. The Grand Duke developed operations to force the Danube and the winter crossing of the Balkans and led Russian troops to Constantinople. He received the Field Marshal’s baton and became the 25th and last full knight of the Order of St. George in the history of the Russian Empire.

Purpose – This paper aims to provide a case study of the CARM (CAVAL Archival and Research Materials Centre) Centre, a print repository owned and managed by CAVAL, an Australian consortium of academic libraries, based in Melbourne, Australia. The history, business models and operations of the initial module, CARM1, which commenced operations in 1996 and the recently completed module, CARM2 are described. This is preceded by a review of literature addressing the issue of retained or ceded ownership of stored items, and is followed by a discussion of the trend from a shared collection to shared storage within a shared facility. Design/methodology/approach – The approach is descriptive and explanatory. CARM1 was designed for both operations and space utilisation to be managed as economically as possible. This was achieved by storing items in a high density configuration and the collection, now known as the CARM Shared Collection, being owned by the CAVAL consortium. In exploring options for an expanded facility in 2007, a shared storage facility was determined to best meet the qualitative needs of member libraries. This option minimised the set-up and operational costs and required the lowest initial capital. CAVAL constructed a second storage facility, CARM2 which began operations in late 2010. Findings – The CARM Centre demonstrates that variant models for storage configurations and collection ownership can co-exist and meet the differing needs of member libraries within one facility. The need for off-site storage and the terms and conditions under which member libraries are willing to accept it differ widely. CAVAL's approach has been, and continues to be, that each member library makes its own decision and that CAVAL's role to facilitate those decisions while retaining an approach that supports broad-based solutions, be this in the form of a fully integrated shared collection, or a co-ordinated and carefully managed shared storage facility. Originality/value – This paper will be of interest and value to other organisations or consortia with an interest in the development, business models, implementation and management of shared print repositories that respond to the needs and circumstances of their member libraries.

The article is devoted to one of the key moments of the Great Northern war – the campaign of the Swedish king Charles XII to Moscow. The historians of this campaign until now has not come to a consensus about what caused the sudden turn of the Swedish army to the South with a main route to Moscow. In the article on the basis of the analysis of historiographical achievements of recent years, a comparative analysis of military operations that took place on the territory of Belarus in the summer – autumn of 1708. In this period there were three major battles at the crossings of important water boundaries: when Golovchino, Maletichy and Lesnaja. All of them had different outcomes, so it is interesting to analyze in detail the features of these battles. The author believes that the Russian army managed to combine the impact on the Swedish army of different kind of troops: guards infantry, horse dragoon regiments and irregular cavalry (cossacks, kalmyks and tatars). The Russian army tried to weaken the enemy forces by creating difficulties in supply. The main motive for turning to the South of Charles XII was the loss of a military convoy, accompanied by a corps Lewenhaupt. The degree of reliability of the sources covering the events of the Great Northern war on the territory of Belarus in 1708 is analyzed. Based on the method of comparative analysis of sources, the author attempts to restore the real picture of the events. The conclusion is made about deliberate distortion of facts in the official Russian historiography in order to create a positive image of Tsar Peter I and his associates both in the international arena and within the country. The stability of this tradition for a long time is revealed.

Background: Specific populations require strenuous activities such as soldiers, and flatfoot deformity can cause significant problems during training or operations. Prevalence of this deformity among Thai Army privates is limited and underestimated due to improper screening techniques. We would like to report the prevalence of flatfoot deformity using a new standardized device and compare performances of army privates between normal foot and flatfoot deformity Study design: The study employed a cross-sectional design Materials and Methods: A prospective study of 490 army privates in the King’s Guard, 2nd Cavalry Division, between June 2015 and November 2015 was conducted. Footprints were collected from all participant using a Harris Mat imprinter and the shape of their feet was recorded based on arch height. The Stahili index >0.77 (NY index) and arch height less than 6 mm were used as cut-off point values to diagnose flatfoot deformity. Additionally, military training performance (running 2 km) was evaluated using validated functional outcome (VAS-FA) and compared between normal arch and flatfoot deformity groups. Results: The prevalence of flatfoot deformity determined using footprints was 52.5% (233 participants: 111 of 233 participants were unilateral (47.6%) and 146 of 233 participants (52.3%) were bilateral flatfeet). The physical training revealed significant differences when compared between bilateral flatfeet and normal arch groups (p= 0.038) and bilateral flatfeet unilateral flatfoot groups (p= 0.009) BMI, VAS score and flatfoot deformity significantly affected the performances of their training (p= 0.03, 0.02, and 0.03 for BMI, VAS score and flatfoot deformity, respectively.) Conclusion: The prevalence of flatfeet deformity among army privates from this study was higher than relates studies. Bilateral flatfeet deformity had a significant effect on physical training. Although many factors affect training performance, BMI, VAS score and flatfoot deformity significantly affected the military training program.

This article explores the role of cavalry in medieval warfare starting with it’s origins in the Carolingian age, examining how cavalry was used as a strategic asset within the context of the period on at an operational level, as well as the tactics they were likely to have employed. Due to my interest in both medieval warhorses and mounted combat research into the context and use of medieval cavalry was a natural by-product. Using primary resources such as first-hand accounts and period artwork as well as secondary literature, the article summarizes the findings of my research. Most historians, despite the recognition that field-battles were not the heart and soul of medieval warfare, still judge medieval cavalry by their performance within them. My findings show a much greater concentration on small unit actions, both in armament and organization, with cavalry centred on chevauchées on raiding and subduing castles in swift commando type take and hold missions. The diversity of mounted forces are also examined in the context of the lance and the integration of mounted crossbowmen and bowmen for combined arms tactics.

The objective of the article is to examine projects aimed at strengthening the security of Russia through the formation of a Cossack (cavalry) army. A similar operational and strategic association owes its practical origin to the Soviet Republic; the Whites also had corresponding projects (in particular, those of P.N. Wrangel). The author of the article managed to establish the fact that projects of creation of such formations existed much earlier, in August - September, 1917, and their realization would not only provide safety of the Russian republic, but also would influence the combat effectiveness of the Russian active army and prospects of the final stage of Russia's participation in the World War I. This determines the scientific novelty of the research. The objectives of the article are to analyze the projects of the formation of the Cossack army of the Russian Republic in the summer-autumn of 1917, as well as the reform of the Cossack cavalry, its division into army and strategic cavalry. After the corresponding reform, the Cossack cavalry (including all 3 Astrakhan Cossack regiments) became the most important operational and strategic tool and reserve of the Russian active army at the final stage of World War I. The article is based on previously unpublished archival documents extracted from the archives of the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA). Research methods: archive study, historico-comparative analysis and historico-systemic analysis.

The article describes a clinical case of treatment of refractory chylous ascites using TIPS in a patient with cirrhosis of the liver who underwent 2 operations disconnecting the portacaval system: ligation of the varicose veins and the Patziora operation (division of the portal and azygos veins). As a result of the treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition; during a further 7 months of outpatient observation, there were no relapses of chylous ascites or other signs of free fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. The proposed treatment method is particularly important because chylous ascites is a rare complication of liver cirrhosis, with a mortality rate of 40–70%. The question of the optimal treatment tactic remains relevant. The general initial approach to treatment is the administration of diuretics and correction of the patient's diet: reducing salt and fat intake; if ineffective, laparocentesis is used. Since CA's aetiopathogenesis is based on portal hypertension syndrome, the operations of choice have become various options for porto-caval shunting or uncoupling operations for decompensation of portal hypertension, such as the Patziora operation. Still, the safest and most reliable approach is transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting.

Clinical exome and genome sequencing (ES/GS) have become indispensable diagnostic tools for rare genetic diseases (RGD). However, the interpretation of ES/GS presents a substantial operational challenge in clinical settings. Test interpretation requires the review of hundreds of genetic variants, a task that has become increasingly challenging given the rising use of ES/GS. In response, we present Clinical Assessment of Variants by Likelihood Ratios (CAVaLRi), which employ a modified likelihood ratio (LR) framework to assign diagnostic probabilities to candidate germline disease genes. CAVaLRi models aspects of the clinical variant assessment process, taking into consideration the predicted impact of the variant, the proband and parental genotypes, and the proband’s clinical characteristics. It also factors in computational phenotype noise and weighs the relative significance of genotype, phenotype, and variant segregation information. We trained and tested CAVaLRi on variant and phenotype data from an internal cohort of 655 clinical ES cases. For validation, CAVaLRi’s performance was benchmarked against four leading gene prioritization algorithms (Exomiser’s hiPHIVE and PhenIX prioritizers, LIRICAL, and XRare) using a distinct cohort of 12,832 ES cases. Our findings reveal that CAVaLRi significantly outperforms its counterparts when clinician-curated phenotype sets are used, as evidenced by its superior precision-recall curve (PR AUC: 0.701) and average diagnostic gene rank (1.59). Notably, even when substituting highly focused clinician-curated phenotype sets with large and potentially nonspecific computationally derived phenotypes, CAVaLRi retains its precision (PR AUC: 0.658; diagnostic gene average rank: 1.68) and markedly outperforms other tools. In a large, heterogeneous validation cohort, CAVaLRi stood out as the most precise prioritization algorithm (PR AUC: 0.335; average diagnostic rank: 1.91). In conclusion, CAVaLRi presents a robust solution for prioritizing diagnostic genes, surpassing current methods. It demonstrates resilience to noisy, computationally-derived phenotypes, providing a scalable strategy to help labs focus on the most diagnostically relevant variants, thus addressing the growing demand for ES/GS interpretation.

A equoterapia promove inúmeros benefícios a pacientes com paralisia cerebral e com transtorno do espectro autista, como aumento do tônus postural e aumento da capacidade intelectual. Entretanto, estes resultados alcançados podem ser reproduzidos em pacientes com diversos outros distúrbios, tanto físicos quanto neuropsiquiátricos. O objetivo desta revisão narrativa é revisar estudos sobre a prática da equoterapia por pacientes com diferentes distúrbios, físicos e psiquiátricos, e verificar a aplicabilidade desta terapia no tratamento dessas condições, bem como seus principais resultados. Foram realizadas pesquisas em bases de dados como Pubmed e Embase, nas quais artigos sobre equoterapia, desde 2011 foram encontrados, tendo sido 27 artigos (incluindo 19 revisões sistemáticas) incluídos nesta revisão. O conteúdo destes engloba paralisia cerebral, transtorno do espectro autista, síndrome de Down, desordens mentais e reumatológicas e apresenta a equoterapia como uma ferramenta promissora para complementar o tratamento destas condições. Alguns dos efeitos da equoterapia já são conhecidos, como melhorias no controle emocional, postura e no equilíbrio, além de aumento da autoestima e da qualidade de vida, consequências da sensação de empoderamento ao se montar um cavalo e de todos os resultados combinados.

AbstractProtein-losing enteropathy has been associated with the Fontan operation, restrictive cardiomyopathy, constrictive pericarditis, tricuspid valvar stenosis and insufficiency, and superior caval venous obstruction. The mechanism of development of this complication of cardiac disease likely is multifactorial. We report here our experience with 3 patients with protein-losing enteropathy. Two had superior caval venous occlusion. The third patient had undergone an extracardiac Fontan operation, with stenosis of the extracardiac conduit placed to the right pulmonary artery. In all three cases, the complication was resolved by restoring unobstructed flow of blood in the superior or inferior caval vein. Since the aetiology of protein-losing enteropathy associated with cardiac disease is multifactorial, reduction of pressure in the tributaries of the superior caval vein may, in some cases, be curative. It is more difficult to cure the problem when it is associated with the Fontan operation.

IntroductionMusculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) represent a significant burden within the British Army, this has been extensively studied amongst recruits. It was decided to study the injury rates of a Light Cavalry Squadron who have adopted an empowered physical training program involving personal responsibility for physical training with periodic benchmark exercises.MethodsAnonymised data were collected between April and August 2020 during an operational tour. The number of presentations to the medical centre for MSKI as well as the number of days of restricted duties were collected. The data relating to the same operational tour, exactly one year previously, for another Light Cavalry squadron were collected as a control. Both units were deployed in the same location, in the same role, and with the same population, fluctuating around 138 personnel.ResultsBetween April and August 2020 there were 124 consultations for MSKI amongst the study population, this resulted in 241 days of restricted duties. In comparison for the control population (April to August 2019), there were 225 consultations for MSKI, and this resulted in 777 days of restricted duties.ConclusionsIt was found that the current unit has experienced a lower incidence of MSKI and fewer restricted duties days when compared to the control group. It is proposed that the greater emphasis on personal responsibility for physical fitness has allowed personnel to develop their fitness with a broader range of physical activity. This has resulted in a lesser burden of overuse injuries. It is also thought that the focus on personal responsibility has led to a greater desire to engage in physical training. Further work is needed to ensure that this trend continues throughout the operational tour and that the empowered training programme has a comparable benefit in physical fitness to the standard training program.

In 2022, the Swiss branch of the international publishing house Springer published a book, a collection of papers entitled Military Geoscience: A Multifaceted Approach to the Study of Warfare. It consists of selected contributions by international researchers in the field of military geoscience, presented at the 13th International Conference on Military Geosciences, held in Padua in June 2019. The first paper is by the editors, Aldin Bondesan and Judy Ehlen, and provides a brief overview of understanding the concept of military geoscience as an application of geology and geography to the military domain, and the historical development of the discipline. It should also be pointed out that the International Conferences on Military Geosciences (ICMG), which organises this biennial international conference, has over the past two decades also covered other aspects, such as conflict archaeology. The publication is further divided into three parts. The first part comprises three contributions covering military geoscience up to the 20th century. The first paper, by Chris Fuhriman and Jason Ridgeway, provides an insights into the Battle of Marathon through topography visualisation. The geography of the Marathon field, the valley between Mt. Cotroni and Mt. Agrieliki, allowed the Greek defenders to nullify the advantage of the Persian cavalry and archers, who were unable to develop their full potential. This is followed by a paper by Judy Ehlen, who explores the geological background of the Anglo-British coastal fortification system along the English Channel, focusing on the Portsmouth area of Hampshire. The author thus points out that changes in artillery technology and naval tactics between the 16th and 19th centuries necessitated changes in the construction of coastal fortifications, both in terms of the form of the fortifications and the method of construction, including the choice of basic building materials, as well as the siting of the fortifications in space. The next article is then dedicated to the Monte Baldo Fortress in north-eastern Italy, between Lake Garda and the Adige River. In his article, Francesco Premi analyses the presence of the fortress in the transition area between the Germanic world and the Mediterranean, and the importance of this part of Italy (at the southernmost part of the pre-Alpine mountains) in military history, as reflected in the large number of important military and war relics and monuments. The second part of the book, which is the most comprehensive, focuses on the two World Wars and consists of nine papers. The first paper in this part provides an analysis of the operation of trench warfare training camps in the Aube region of France. The group of authors, Jérôme Brenot, Yves Desfossés, Robin Perarnau, Marc Lozano and Alain Devos, initially note that static warfare training camps have not received much attention so far. Using aerial photography of the region dating from 1948 and surviving World War II photographic material, they identified some 20 sites where soldiers of the Entente forces were trained for front-line service in trenches. Combined archaeological and sociological fieldwork followed, confirming the presence of these camps, both through preserved remains and the collective memory. The second paper in this volume also concerns the survey on trenches, located in northern Italy in the Venezia Tridentina Veneto area in northern Italy. The authors Luigi Magnini, Giulia Rovera, Armando De Guio and Giovanni Azzalin thus use digital classification methods and archaeology to determine how Italian and Austro-Hungarian First World War trenches have been preserved or, in case they have disappeared, why this was the case, both from the point of view of the natural features as well as from the anthropological point of view of the restoration of the pre-war settings. The next paper, by Paolo Macini and Paolo Sammuri, analyses the activities of the miners and pioneers of the Italian Corps of Engineers during the First World War, in particular with regard to innovative approaches to underground mine warfare. In the Dolomites, the Italian engineers, using various listening devices, drilling machinery and geophysical methods, developed a system for drilling underground mine chambers, which they intended to use and actually used to destroy parts of Austro-Hungarian positions. The paper by Elena Dai Prà, Nicola Gabellieri and Matteo Boschian Bailo concerns the Italian Army's operations during the First World War. It focuses on the use of tactical maps with emphasis on typological classification, the use of symbols, and digital cartography. The authors thus analysed the tactical maps of the Italian Third Army, which were being constantly updated by plotting the changes in positions and tactical movements of both sides. These changes were examined both in terms of the use of new symbols and the analysis of the movements. This is followed by a geographical presentation of the Italian Army's activities during the First World War. The authors Paolo Plini, Sabina Di Franco and Rosamaria Salvatori have thus collected 21,856 toponyms by analysing documents and maps. The locations were also geolocated to give an overview of the places where the Italian Army operated during the First World War. The analysis initially revealed the complexity of the events on the battlefields, but also that the sources had misidentified the places of operation, as toponyms were misidentified, especially in the case of homonyms. Consequently, the area of operation was misidentified as well. In this respect, the case of Vipava was highlighted, which can refer to both a river and a settlement. The following paper is the first on the Second World War. It is the article by H. A. P. Smith on Italian prisoners of war in South Africa. The author outlines the circumstances in which Italian soldiers arrived to and lived in the southern African continent, and the contribution they made to the local environment and the society, and the remnants of their presence preserved to the present day. In their article, William W. Doe III and Michael R. Czaja analyse the history, geography and significance of Camp Hale in the state of Colorado. In doing so, they focus on the analysis of the military organization and its impact on the local community. Camp Hale was thus the first military installation of the U.S. Army, designated to test and train U.S. soldiers in mountain and alpine warfare. It was here that the U.S. 10th Mountain Division was formed, which concluded its war path on Slovenian soil. The Division's presence in this former camp, which was in military use also after the war until 1965, and in the surrounding area is still visible through numerous monuments. This is followed by a paper by Hermann Häusler, who deals with German military geography and geology on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. A good year before the German attack on the Soviet Union, German and Austrian military geologists began an analysis of the topography, population and infrastructure of the European part of the Soviet Union, which led to a series of publications, including maps showing the suitability of the terrain for military operations. During the war, military geological teams then followed the frontline units and carried out geotechnical tasks such as water supply, construction of fortifications, supply of building materials for transport infrastructure, and analysis of the suitability of the terrain for all-terrain driving of tracked and other vehicles. The same author also authored a paper in the next chapter, this time focusing on the activities of German military geologists in the Adriatic area. Similarly to his first contribution, the author presents the work of military geologists in northern Italy and north-western Slovenia. He also focuses on the construction of fortification systems in northern Italy and presents the work of karst hunters in the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral. Part 3 covers the 21st century with five different papers (chapters). The first paper by Alexander K. Stewart deals with the operations of the U.S. Army specialised teams in Afghanistan. These Agribusiness Development Teams (ADTs) carried out a specialised form of counter-guerrilla warfare in which they sought to improve the conditions for the development of local communities through agricultural assistance to the local population. In this way, they were also counteracting support for the Taliban. The author notes that, in the decade after the programme's launch, the project had only a 19% success rate. However, he stresses that such forms of civil-military cooperation should be present in future operations. The next chapter, by Francis A. Galgan, analyses the activities of modern pirates through military-geographical or geological methods. Pirates, who pose a major international security threat, are present in four regions of the world: South and South-East Asia, East Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. Building on the data on pirate attacks between 1997 and 2017, the author shows the temporal and spatial patterns of pirate activities, as well as the influence of the geography of coastal areas on their activities. This is followed by another chapter with a maritime topic. Mark Stephen Blaine discusses the geography of territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Through a presentation of international law, the strategic importance of the sea (sea lanes, natural resources) and the overlapping territorial claims of China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia, the author shows the increasing level of conflict in the area and calls for the utmost efforts to be made to prevent the outbreak of hostilities or war. M. H. Bulmer's paper analyses the Turkish Armed Forces' activities in Syria from the perspective of military geology. The author focuses on the Kurdish forces' defence projects, which mainly involved the construction of gun trenches, observation towers or points, tunnels and underground facilities, as well as on the Turkish armed forces' actions against this military infrastructure. This involved both mountain and underground warfare activities. While these defensive infrastructures proved to be successful during the guerrilla warfare period, direct Turkish attacks on these installations demonstrated their vulnerability. The last chapter deals with the current operational needs and limitations of military geosciences from the perspective of the Austrian Armed Forces. Friedrich Teichmann points out that the global operational interest of states determines the need for accurate geo-data as well as geo-support in case of rapidly evolving requirements. In this context, geoscience must respond to new forms of threats, both asymmetric and cyber, at a time when resources for geospatial services are limited, which also requires greater synergy and an innovative approach to finding solutions among multiple stakeholders. This also includes increased digitisation, including the use of satellite and other space technologies. The number of chapters in the publication illustrates the breadth and depth of military geoscience, as well as the relevance of geoscience to past, present and future conflicts or military operations and missions. The current military operations in Ukraine demonstrate the need to take into account the geo-geological realities of the environment and that terrain remains one of the decisive factors for success on the battlefield, irrespective of the technological developments in military engineering and technology. This can also be an incentive for Slovenian researchers and the Slovenian Armed Forces to increase research activities in the field of military geosciences, especially in view of the rich military and war history in the geographically and geologically diverse territory of Slovenia.

SummarySummary Between June 1988 and December 1992, six patients with dominant left and rudimentary right ventricles underwent orthoterminal correction with a modified Fontan operation in which the atriums were neoseptated using a flap constructed from the right atrial wali. Four patients had anomalous systemic venous connections. The operations were performed under direct caval cannulation, standard cardiopulmonary bypass, moderate hypothermia and cardioplegic arrest. After opening the right atrium with a longitudinal incision, the atrial septum was completely resected and the coronary sinus was cut back. The upper wall of the right atrial incision was brought down in such a way that the pulmonary venous atrium was drained into the dominant ventricle via the right-sided or common atrioventricular valve. This was followed by direct connection of the right atrium with its anterior wall reconstructed with pericardium to the pulmonary arteries. In one patient, a left superior caval vein draining to the left atrium was divided and anastomosed to left pulmonary artery. One patient died on the 12th postoperative day with pulmonary infection and sepsis, though he had no hemodynamic problem, and another died on the sixth day due to high pulmonary vascular resistance. The remaining four patients are progressing well at a mean of 23.4 months postoperatively with functional capacity of NYHA I-IT and sinus rhythm. Echocardiographic and angiocardiographic examinations during follow-up showed unobstructed pulmonary and systemic venous pathways in all. This modification of the Fontan operation seems a good alternative technique which creates a contractile left atrium with large enough dimensions and an unobstructed pathway for pulmonary venous flow.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the short combat path of one of the national formations formed during the Great Patriotic War — the 115th Kabardino-Balkar Cavalry Division. Finding itself at the forefront of the enemy offensive at the end of July 1942, the division was able to withstand virtually only a few heavy battles with tank formations of the Wehrmacht. The whole drama of the Red Army was reflected in the tragic fate of the division. The article is based on the archival material of the Russian archives (first of all, the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation), as well as German operational documents, which was introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.

Cardiac catheterisation in both revealed a massive right-to-left shunt from the inferior caval vein, through the liver, to a hepatic vein draining directly to the left side of the intra-atrial baffle. The anomalous vein was successfully ligated in both patients.

Abstract Introduction Virtual Health (VH) is posited to be a force multiplier for Military Medicine, delivering digital healthcare to the point of need for the warfighter. To date, there are no studies on the impact of both synchronous and asynchronous VH modalities during a deployment. VH usage by the 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment (1/2 CR) during a 6 month deployment to rural Poland was evaluated prospectively to identify mission days saved for Commanders. Materials and Methods VH Europe staff trained 1/2 CR Garrison and Deployed Medical Staff on VH modalities. Workflows for communication to higher echelons of medical care were developed. Usage of VH was prospectively tracked to identify trends and outcomes. Results 213 Soldier Mission Days during a 6 month deployment were saved through the use of VH versus in-person travel for care. The predominance of VH was for synchronous video VH for the Warfighter (VIEW) (90%), followed by asynchronous Health Experts onLine Portal (HELP) consultations (10%). Lost Soldier productivity of $87,330 was avoided. Conclusion Operational VH is a force multiplier that brings the resources of the Medical Center to the Warfighter at the point of need. The full spectrum of VH modalities offers the greatest benefit for deployed units. Expansion of these technologies throughout the Department of Defense will reduce medical evacuations, increase Active Duty Service Member time on mission, and reduce risks for Commanders.

ABSTRACT Portal vein thrombosis is the thrombotic occlusion of the extrahepatic portal system, which can propagate towards the vena caval system. Although rare, it occurs primarily in those with cirrhosis, intra-abdominal infections, malignancy, or hypercoagulable disorders. This report describes the first reported case of a soldier within special operations without identifiable risk factors who was found to have a completely occlusive portal vein thrombosis after approximately 10 days of insidious abdominal pain. This case emphasizes the importance of considering this rare but dangerous pathology among this highly screened and capable special operations population.

Haemoptysis was the presenting symptom in a 27-year-old male. He had undergone a Mustard operation for connection of complete transposition at the age of 2 years. For 6 months prior to admission, he had complained of dyspnoea without chestpain, and swelling of the fingers during hard physical work. Chest radiography and computer tomographic scans showed normal features of the pulmonary parenchyma, and no sign of cardiomegaly or vascular stasis. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy demonstrated a blood clot in the upper right bronchus, without any associated abnormalities of the bronchial tree. Doppler echocardiography showed obstruction of the superior caval vein, which was verified by cardiac catheterization. Balloon dilation at the site of obstruction increased the diameter of the vein from 0.5 to 1.7 cm, and the mean pressure in the superior caval vein was reduced significantly from 18 to 10 mmHg. The haemoptysis did not recur, and no complaints of dyspnoea or swelling of fingers during physical activity was reported 2 years later. Transthoracic echocardiography undertaken at this time revealed no obstruction of the superior caval vein. We conclude that hemoptysis is a rare complication of increased venous pressure in the upper body of patients with superior caval venous obstruction, which can be treated by balloon dilation or stenting.

We recently performed intraoperative ultrasonography (IU) in 3 such patients with caval thrombus. IU is a useful tool for enabling the surgeon to assess the anatomo-clinical picture more precisely and sometimes to perform a less invasive operation.

Border Protection Troops (WOP) was formed upon the order of the Polish Army Commander-in-chief No. 0245/org dated September 13th, 1945. This process in the role of the head of the WOP Department was coordinated by a Soviet officer, Gwidon Czerwiński. Due to lack of a sufficient number of motorised equipment, necessary for the implementation of encircled tasks by the order in the newly established formation, a big number of saddle and train horses was used. The same solution was used in the then District of Masuria, where the northern border was guarded by the 5th Border Protection Division. The organization of the squad was initiated by Lt Col Stanisław Wyderka. Soldiers subordinate to him patrolling designated sectors were also using staff horses. For recreational purposes they also practiced horseback riding. On the basis of a squad in subsequent years, they formed other units with identical tasks. Soldiers of Border Protection Troops were improving the artistry of horse-riding as well as competing in regional competitions on horseback, referring in this way to the rich equestrian tradition of the Second Republic of Poland. In Kętrzyn, for the purpose of training, a Platoon of Cavalry was even maintained.

based on the revolutionary concept of the dispensable right ventricle, the fontan operation stands as the extreme example of physiologic repair in pediatric cardiac surgery, serving as the common surgical denominator for the entire spectrum of functionally univentricular conditions. also called ortho-terminal repair, it makes allowance for a circulatory arrangement that is in-series by effectively driving the pumpless systemic venous return directly through the pulmonary circulation. if this arrangement is to work, then two conditions must be fulfilled. first, there must not be any anatomical or functional hindrance along the whole fontan pathway, from the caval venous inflows to the aortic outflow. second, there must be a well-suited systemic pump, essentially recruited to the dual function of drawing blood from and, simultaneously, driving blood through, the lungs. this latter function, driving the blood through the lungs, takes place during the venous phase of the systemic output.

It was closed with a vascular plug, with improvement in oxygen saturation. She developed extensive inferior caval vein thrombus following the procedure, which was managed conservatively by anti-coagulation.
