Abstract:
An overview of shelled pteropod species of the northeast Pacific Ocean, roughly north of 25°N and east of 160°W is presented. For the 34 recognised species (Limacinidae 6, Creseidae 4, Creseidae ? 2, Cuvierinidae 3, Cliidae 6, Cavoliniidae 10, Peraclidae 2, Clionidae 1) a brief description is given enabling identification. Data are based on several museum collections and the existing literature. For all species the original description and most important synonyms are referenced. Locations of type specimens are recorded as far as is known. All species are illustrated, for many species images of

Due to sedentary lifestyle and harsh environmental conditions, gorgonian coral extracts are recognized as a rich source of novel compounds with various biological activities, of interest to the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The presented study aimed to perform chemical screening of organic extracts and semi-purified fractions obtained from the common Adriatic gorgonian, sea fan, Eunicella cavolini (Koch, 1887) and explore its abilities to exert different biological effects in vitro. Qualitative chemical evaluation revealed the presence of several classes of secondary metabolites exte

Nicotine is an independent risk factor of and associated with the development of atherosclerosis. Dysfunction of endothelial Cavolin-1 (Cav-1) can accelerate atherosclerosis progression via boosting inflammation response. However, the causative link between nicotine and atherosclerosis remains unknown. Here, we utilized molecular and cellular experiments revealed that in human endothelial cells (HUVECs), 10-6 M nicotine increased intracellular oxygen free radical generation, inhibited eNOS activity, augmented pathological NO production from iNOS, promoted nitrative stress (Nitrotyrosine), and

Microparticles (MPs) are small membrane fragments shed from normal as well as activated, apoptotic or injured cells. Recent findings show a strong correlation between elevated levels of circulating MPs and several cardiovascular disease states including hypertension and atherosclerosis. Moreover, emerging evidence implicates MPs as a causal and/or contributing factor in altering normal vascular cell phenotype through initiation of proinflammatory signal transduction events and paracrine delivery of proteins, mRNA and miRNA. However, little is known regarding the mechanism by which MPs influenc

Background: Activation of PKCβ has been shown to play a critical role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury in hearts from non-diabetic rodents. Our recent studies showed that PKCβ2 is overexpressed in the myocardium of diabetic rats that were associated with more severe post-ischemic MI/R injury relative to non-diabetic rats. We hypothesized that myocardial PKCβ overexpression is a major contributor responsible for the exacerbation of MI/R injury in diabetes and that PKCβ inhibition can attenuate MI/R injury in diabetes.
