Abstract:
Epilepsy is a common and serious neurological disorder, which manifests in seizures, and has an incidence of approximately 1% of the world population. In developed nations, most instances are relatively well controlled through the use of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). For around a third of cases, AEDs are ineffective, resulting in poorly maintained seizures otherwise known as refractory, or drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Currently, treatment of DRE often requires neurosurgery to be performed to resect seizure generating foci. Historically, such treatment was used as a last resort due to the inva

Constraint-Based Local Search (CBLS) is a technology used to solve computationally hard optimisation problems. A model written in a solver-independent modelling language needs to be processed before it can be solved by a CBLS solver. The purpose of this project is to develop a framework for evaluating invariant structures and structure identification schemes. To do this, we introduce a set of metrics, whi

Abstract:
Pharmacology
M.S.
Homocysteine, an intermediate metabolite biosynthesized from the methionine cycle, is a homologue of cysteine. Homocysteine differs from cysteine by an additional methylene group, which makes it more reactive. Elevated homocysteine level is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease, brain atrophy, neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive dysfunctions. Recent studies suggest a bi-directional relationship between homocysteine levels and immune-inflammatory activation. Our studies sought to determine if hyperhomocysteinemia affects cell infiltrat

Arkell, Thomas Richard. "Cannabis and Its Effects on Driving and Cognitive Function." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/23397.

Abstract:
Prior research shows that acute cannabis intoxication can impair driving ability and related cognitive functions, yet there is considerable uncertainly around the magnitude and duration of this impairment. The extant cannabis and driving literature has focused predominantly on Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. However, with changing cannabis laws and a rapidly expanding commercial cannabis industry, many consumers now have access to a vast range of botanical cannabis types (strains) and products (e.g. oils; edibles) that were previously unavailable.

During recent years the possible medical application of cannabis has been discussed more and more. It turns out, that the active substances (cannabinoids cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol) have a significant potential in medicine and do not have to be only misused as a recreational drug. The Department of Crop Production (Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources) is the first institution with granted permission to legally cultivate cannabis, with higher THC content than 0,3 %, for research purposes. The first part of literate review recapitulates the basic knowledge about the can
