Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have gained significant consideration these days, as opposed to wired sensor networks, by introducing multi-functional wireless nodes, which are smaller in size. The main advan-tage is that its wireless, so it costs less to install, maintain and reconfig-ure. These sensor nodes are used in various application areas. For ex-ample: residential, industrial, environmental and military application areas. However WSNs communication is prone to negative influences from the physical environment, such as physical obstacles and interfer-ence. Algorithms must be developed for handling these problems and also to investigate the channel properties. The purpose of this work is to design a testbed, which enables the communication of wireless sensor nodes, to capture the properties of the channel, which will, in the long run, enable better solutions to be designed which are, more appropriate to the errors in the channel. In this testbed, one channel, from the IEEE 802.15.4 channels spectrum, is dedicated as an emergency channel, which is used for handshaking and to handle channel/external interfer-ence or hardware failure between the communication of Transmitter (TX) and Receiver (RX) nodes. The remaining 15 channels are called data channels and are used for actual data transmission and control signals. Peer to Peer transmission of a transmitter-receiver pair is achieved with the introducing of beacons and acknowledgment (ACK) packets. The testbed also has the property of dual reception and data logging on a single PC by maeans of two RX nodes simultaneously from a single TX node. The dependency of the packet on the “Frame Length” byte(in the Frame header) during the reception is eliminated so that if the “Frame Length” byte is compromised, it will replace the programmer defined value with the “Frame Length” byte which helps to investigate the actual packets byte sent from the TX. Also, the Received Signal Strength (RSS) is calculated at the maximum sample rate of the channel. Power consumption is not considered in this testbed. The work is conducted on both the IEEE 802.15.4 physical and the application layers. Linux based TinyOS-2.x is used as an operating system for low power sensor devices. New algorithms are designed for each step in the development of the testbed. MICAz motes are used as nodes and an MIB520 programming board is used for burning the codes and for the purpose of gateways.

Agrawal, Ambuj. "Implementation of Application Layer Protocol for an Active RFID System." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34961.

Full text
Abstract:
The emerging technology of active RFID tags has strong potential in the areas of real time health monitoring, sorting of cargo, and large scale inventory management because of their longer communication range and larger data storage capacity. The market of active RFID is growing very rapidly and therefore there has been an increase in the number of companies engaging in this field. But very often it is found that the products available in the market are not always suited to the application at hand. To overcome this problem, off the shelf active RFID products which were reconfigurable and followed a standard PHY and MAC layer protocol were used for this work. By reprogramming the application layer protocol of the RFID hardware, these devices were made suitable for the desired application. This also allowed the RFID tags to extend their functionality by interfacing extra modules with themselves. The work presented in this thesis describes the way in which the microcontroller on board the active RFID tags and readers can be programmed so that the functionality of the RFID hardware can be changed as per requirements. It also shows that extra modules can be added to the tag by successfully interfacing an accelerometer module with the tag.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor network, which is constitute of autonomous sensors, is used for monitoring physical or environmental conditions like temperature, sound, pressure, and so on. The dispersed sensors or nodes will respectively pass their data through the network to the main location. Currently, several standards are ratified or in developing for wireless sensor network, like Wireless Hart, ISA, 100.11a, WIA-PAA, IEEE 802.15.4, etc. Among the standards, Zigbee is often used in industrial applications that require short-range and low-rate wireless transfer. In the research, all the data is collected under industrial environment using IEEE 802.15.4 compliant physical layer, some packets are interfered only by multi-path fading while others are also interfered by Wi-Fi interference. The goal of the thesis is to find out the dependence between the received power (RSS), correlation value (CORR) and bit error rate (BER) of the received message, and their distribution in situations both when the packet is lost or not. Besides, the performance of bit error rate such as the distribution and the features of burst error length under Wi-Fi interference or not will also be tested. All of them are based on a precise statistical processing.

Abstract:

This thesis will investigate the possibilities to wireless communicate within time critical applications with the radio protocol IEEE 802.15.4.

IEEE 802.15.4 is a very quick protocol so the delays and jitter can be ignored in a small network.

The thesis handles the question: Is it possible to split a CAN-bus and send the data via radio to the other side of the CAN-bus?

The big problems with this are:

• Will it be treated like a transparent link and not disturb the original functionality?

• How does a system which is split up by radio treat new nodes on the bus?

• What will be the maximum speed and the maximum utilization factor for the split up bus?

• What new suitable protocols can be implemented on a higher level to get the split bus to work?

This is modeled and discussed, real measurement from a radio link is used in the model to see if it’s possible.

The radio communication will satisfy the demands from the company regarding their application. With an efficient error handling and a smart transmission protocol the application can be a very smart way of sending CAN-data via radio.

Abstract:
Sensors have been an integral part of our life since a long time. Traditionally, the transmit information to a data collection center through a physical wire. However, with the introduction of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication protocol, more research is being done into the field of wireless sensor networks (WSN). BLE was introduced to target low power applications. The CC2650 Launchpad designed by Texas Instruments (TI) can lead to a bulky final product. The aim was to design hardware for the CC2650 micro-controller with the aim of making it more compact for use in WSNs. A top-down approach was used wherein the available product is studied to identify the redundant and reverse engineer it to design a new product. A 2 layer printed circuit board (PCB) was designed which resulted in a 64 percent decrease in size compared to the Launchpad. Also, experiments were performed to test the proof of concept.

Abstract:
In wireless sensor networks, communications are usually destroyed by signal attenuation, multipath fading and different kinds of interferences like WLAN and microwave oven interference. In order to build a stable wireless communication system, reactions like retransmission mechanisms are necessary. Since the way we must react to interference is different from the way we react to multipathfading and attenuation, the retransmission mechanism should be adjusted in different ways under those different cicumstances. Under this condition, channel diagnostics for discriminating the causes that corrupt the packets between multipath fading and attenuation (MFA) and WLAN interference are imperative. This paper presents a frame bit error rate (F-BER) regulated algorithm based on a joint RSSI-LQI classifier that may correctly diagnose the channel status. This discriminator is implemented on MicaZ sensor devices equipped with CC2420 transceivers. This discriminator is able to improve the accuracy to 91%. Although we need to wait for 2 or 3 necessary packets to make a decision, higher stability and reliability are presented when operating this discriminator.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Transfusion services have a weak evidence base compared to many other modern healthcare practices. Diversity of platelet concentrate quality and deterioration of function during ageing is poorly understood and difficult to measure. No single test is currently suitable to assess concentrate quality for product development purposes or to confirm suitability of individual concentrates for clinical use. Many of the studies in this field investigate the in vitro association between concentrate age and test results. Not all quality indicators are equally informative because a number of storage associated changes correct upon infusion. This study aims to evaluate novel platelet quality assessment techniques that may be of use in determining platelet concentrate quality. The initial stages of the study involved development of reference methods and in vitro assessment of novel techniques for assessing platelet concentrate quality using out of date concentrates. Reference methods included swirl assessment, pH measurement, hypotonic shock response (HSR) and extent shape change (ESC) assays. Novel techniques investigated included the iZON impedance analyser, the ThromboLUX instrument, rotation thromboelastometry (ROTEM) and an automated, simplified version of the HSR test named the automated water expulsion (AWE) test. After initial technical development of the assays, a study of the test results obtained throughout platelet concentrate ageing in the laboratory and under different storage conditions was undertaken. This was followed by a small, proof of concept clinical trial, in which in vitro test results of platelet concentrate samples obtained from the giving set after platelet transfusion were compared to measures of transfusion outcome in myelodisplasia (MDS) patients. Transfusion efficacy was assessed using self assessment bleeding questionnaires and 1 hour post-transfusion corrected count increment (CCI). Although the number of patients included in the trial was too low to reach any definite conclusions, the ThromboLUX, ROTEM and AWE tests all showed enough potential to warrant further investigation as part of a larger clinical trial in the future.

Abstract:
This chapter presents Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) applications in MATLAB. Through these applications we acquire measurement data from BLE compatible sensors to PC. The sensors are CC2541 Keyfob and CC2650 Sensor Tag. The first one contains an accelerometer and a temperature sensor while the second one contains more sensors, but inertial sensors and magnetometer are invoked. The PC should be equipped with a general USB BLE adapter. The most important steps for implementing a BLE application are presented: scanning, connecting, configuring and data reading. Following this, more detailed applications are presented: a wireless sensor network for temperature measurement with three Keyfob-based nodes, an application that displays in real time accelerometer data and a heading computed method using either the gyroscope or the magnetometer of CC2650 Sensor Tag. The most important MATLAB elements that are used to implement these applications are different types of variables such as structure, table and object, methods to implement endless loops and real-time display of acquired data and using quaternions to handle 3D orientation of a device.

Abstract:
Advances in embedded computing systems have resulted in the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which provide unique opportunities for sensing physical environments. ZigBee-compliant WSN platforms have been proposed for healthcare monitoring, smart home, industrial monitoring and sensor, and other applications. In this chapter, the authors, using TI CC2430 and CC2431 chipsets with Z-Stack, designed an outdoor patients’ healthcare monitoring system for tracking patients and helping doctors and nurses to keep tabs on patients’ health remotely. Furthermore, several important techniques are elaborated, including reliable communication, localization algorithm, and backup power, which can enhance the system performance. Finally, some suggestions for future development are presented.

Abstract:
In the case of coal mine accidents, in order to ensure timely rescue of the suffering people in a complex environment of underground localization, focusing on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) in underground personnel positioning accuracy is low and the problem of dynamic tracing parameters changes. Therefore, using an improved gravitational search algorithm (GSA) for the weighted centroid localization that based on RSSI. Utilizing the log distance path loss model gets the distance between the beacon nodes and unknown nodes, and then through the weighted centroid localization algorithm perform the unknown node positioning. Finally, the improved GSA-PSO optimizes the preliminary location results and parameters. Proposed solutions to establish simulation model is verified in MATLAB, and use the on-chip system CC2430 chips experiment platform is established. Experimental results show the proposed method can improve both the positioning accuracy effectively and the adaptive ability of changeful environment.

Abstract:
The prime objective of this chapter is to develop a power-mapping localization algorithm based on Monte Carlo method using a discrete antithetic approach called Antithetic Markov Chain Monte Carlo (AMCMC). The chapter is focused on solving two major problems in WSN, thereby increasing the accuracy of the localization algorithm and discrete power control. Consecutively, the work is focused to reduce the computational time, while finding the location of the sensor. The model achieves the power controlling strategy using discrete power levels (CC2420 radio chip) which allocate the power, based on the event of each sensor node. By utilizing this discrete power mapping method, all the high-level parameters are considered for WSN. To improve the overall accuracy, the antithetic sampling is used to reduce the number of unwanted sampling, while identifying the sensor location in each transition state. At the final point, the accuracy is increased to 94% wherein nearly 24% of accuracy is increased compared to other MCL-based localization schemes.

Abstract:
Today’s hydroprocessing reactor manufacturers use 2¼Cr–1Mo–¼V steel to build lighter reactors than conventional Cr-Mo reactors. Manufacturing even lighter hydroprocessing reactors has been enabled with the introduction of the new ASME Section VIII Division 2 Code, initially released in 2007. The higher allowable stresses in the new Division 2 for these Vanadium-modified steels permits even lighter reactors to be built while maintaining suitable design margins. The new Division 2 Code requires additional engineering to ensure safe design. One of the challenges the engineer is faced with, is preparation of the User’s Design Specification (UDS) including new and more stringent requirements for fatigue evaluation. As the operating temperature of the rector is higher than 371°C, engineers have to evaluate the fatigue life of the reactor in accordance with Code Case 2605 (CC2605). CC2605 requires inelastic analysis and evaluation effects of creep. Vanadium-modified reactors require additional care during fabrication to prevent higher hardness around weld areas, reheat cracking, and reduced toughness at lower temperatures in the “as welded” condition. This paper provide guidance for the preparation of an ASME Section VIII Division 2 User’s Design Specification including process descriptions of all the cycles expected for the life of the rector and analysis requested by CC2605. An example of such an analysis, including finite element analysis results, is provided in this paper. Requirements to provide the material specification is also discussed with an emphasis on prevention of reheat cracking, hardenability, and temper and hydrogen embitterment.
