Full textOptical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA), adapted from the cellular phone network appeared from several years as a multiple access solution for high-speed Local Area Fibre-Optic Networks. This technique consists in assigning to each user a specific code providing an asynchronous and simultaneous access to several users. In this work, we study an incoherent optical CDMA system with time data spreading. In such systems, the incoherent optical signal processing uses unipolar quasi-orthogonal codes and the performances can be significantly reduced by Multiple Access Interference (MAI) as the number of active users increases. Different receivers are studied in order to mitigate the MAI, in particular a serial cancellation receiver. The theoretical error probabilities of each structure are established. One of the main issues of this work is the use of a system simulation software called COMSIS, which permits us to take into account the optical signal processing and the limitations introduced by all the electronic, opto-electronic and optical devices. This study provides a theoretical background for future studies on realistic applications of OCDMA to access network

Full textThe CDMA technique (Code Division Multiple Access) is widely used in the radio cellular networks (3G). In the recent years, there has been a tendency towards the use of this technique in fibre-optic multiple access networks. This is mainly because of the large available bandwidth of the optical fibre. Associated with DWDM, this technique would indeed allow a significant increase in the number of users in the local area network without increasing in the number of fibres in the core network. It would be accompanied by a drastic cost decrease of the bit/km. This type of study is governed by the constraints bound to signal processing and the component performances. The research reported in this thesis, consists in an investigation through system simulations including the imposed constrains of the components and optoelectronic functions in response of the needs in local optical network architectures using CDMA applications. The limitations due to emission and reception blocks have been specially studied (laser + modulator, photodiodes, associated high speed electronics,…). In addition, the specific properties of optical fibre (dispersion, attenuation) has been considered in the particular case of optical access local network

Full textThis thesis deals with the performance of optical girelles communications for body area networks (BAN) as an alternative solution to the radiofrequency one, in the context of mobile healthcare monitoring. After presenting the main characteristics of a BAN using the radiofrequency technology, specifically in the UWB band, we explain the advantages of the optical wireless technology. Diffuse propagation based on infrared technology is then considered for BAN, exploiting optical reflections from environment surfaces. Several optical wireless channel modeling methods are introduced, and we consider two solutions for the link between two on-body nodes: a classical method named “one reflection model”, used to estimate performance variations, and a ray-launching method, used to take into account a great amount of optical reflections. Considering several scenarios, we determine the outage probability, and show that the diffuse optical wireless technology is able to achieve an on-body link, with the data rates and the quality of service required by health monitoring applications, for a transmitted power far lower than the limit defined in standards. Then, we evaluate the theoretical performance, in terms of error probability, of an optical wireless BAN, considering the optical code division multiple access technique. Finally, we show that a BAN using optical wireless technology is theoretically feasible, regarding a health monitoring application, and considering the mobility of the patient in indoor environment

Full textThe multiple access technique CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), based on the allocation to each user of a specific and distinct code, is studied for application to high-speed optical communications (OCDMA (Optical CDMA)). The main degradation causes are Multiple Access Interference due to the codes unipolarity, and the optical channel limitations (noise, chromatic dispersion …). In this thesis, several multi-user receivers (SIC (Serial Interference Cancellation) and PIC (Parallel Interference Cancellation)) have been studied theoretically and by simulation. The most studied structure is the PIC, which does not need much time of computation, and is simple to implement. Moreover, the chromatic dispersion impact, and the noise impact have been evaluated

Full textThe Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technique permits several users communicating simultaneously and asynchronously on a common resource. This technique consists in the allocation of a specific and distinct code signature to each user. For several decades, this has been studied to provide access in optical systems (Optical CDMA or OCDMA). The used coding is a key element which can either be in one dimension (1D) or in two dimensions (2D). The work undertaken in this thesis concerns 2D coding for incoherent OCDMA systems. The objective is to enable a high number of users simultaneously communicating at high data rate for a given performance. In this context, we proposed in this report a 2D code family construction named Multi-Wavelength Optical Orthogonal Codes (MWOOC) and we investigated various receiver structures to evaluate its performance. Future access networks are also expected to provide diversity of services. From the proposed 2D MWOOC coding, a methodology based on the code partitioning is developed in order to carry out quality of service (or Binary Error Rate BER) differentiation. The data rate differentiation is performed by allocating several codes to each user (parallel mapping). Then, the performance analysis is theoretically established in terms of data rate and quality of service. We show that the developed method yields a high flexibility for future multimedia applications in optical access networks

Full textAfter Qualcomm's proposal of the IS-95 standard, code-division multiple access (CDMA) gained popularity as an alternative multiple-access scheme in cellular and personal communication systems (PCS). Besides the advantage of allowing asynchronous operation of the users, CDMA direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) offers resistance to frequency selective fading and graceful degradation of the performance as the number of users increases.
Orthogonality of the signals in time-division multiple access and frequency-division multiple access is inherent from the nature of the multiple access scheme. In a CDMA system, orthogonality of the signals is not guaranteed in general. Consequently, the performance of conventional correlation receivers suffers.
Sub-optimum receivers which use knowledge of the interfering signals have been investigated by other researchers. These receivers attempt to cancel the multi-user interference by despreading the interfering users. Hence, these receivers require knowledge about all the spreading codes, amplitude levels, and signal timing, and are, in general, computationally intensive.
In this thesis, a technique is presented for which a high degree of interference rejection can be obtained without the necessity of despreading each user. It is shown that exploiting spectral correlation can help mitigate the effects of the multiple-access interference. If code-on-pulse DS-SS modulation is used, a cyclic form of the Wiener filter provides substantial improvements in performance in terms of bit error rate and user capacity. Furthermore, it is shown, that a special error-criterion should be used to adapt the weights of the filter.
The computational complexity of the receiver is equivalent to that of conventional equalizers.

In wireless transmission systems, the resources are limited. We hope to increase the system capacity under the limited resources. In this thesis, we discuss the efficiency of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multiuser situations. We use the cascade of a cyclic error correction (CEC) code and a turbo code to reduce the bit error rate of systems. By puncturing, we can adjust the code rate of the turbo code. Then, by proper choice of code rate, higher data transmission rate can be achieved. We consider two kinds of channels: additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and Rayleigh fading channels. Where in the fading is bit-by-bit. In Rayleigh fading channels, because the bit error rate is large when the multiuser interference increases in the system, we try to reduce it by the diversity scheme. We also use the queueing models to predict the blocking probability of systems. Finally, we consider two kinds of cases to find the optimal code rate. One is to decide the optimal code rate based on the acceptable blocking probability. The other one is to decide the optimal code rate based on both the blocking probability and the data transmission rate.

Abstract In the past, the cellular CDMA system utilizing the spread spectrum technique was frequently compared to other multiple access techniques such as FDMA or TDMA under the cellular structure. The results show that CDMA exhibits superior characteristics over the others, especially in respect of system capacity. In this thesis, simulation is performed to verify that power control is crucial for CDMA mobile telephone network. The goal of high system capacity can not be accomplished without power control. Previous research on the topic of cellular CDMA/AMPS overlay system had used analysis method to understand the relations between capacity, power ratio of two systems and other important parameters. In this thesis, however, we use the computer to simulate the real location of the mobile users, and combine several techniques for raising the capacity of system, such as power control, the unique human voice activity factor of digital CDMA, and the method of sectorization. Besides, we adopt the mobile communication propagation model with path loss factor 4. In a transitional stage from the old analog cellular AMPS to the digital cellular CDMA, the overlay system of CDMA and AMPS is considered. The two systems have equal cell size, and the positions of the two base stations are the same. The main idea in this thesis is to calculate the system capacity based on, the C/I value and other related parameters in the reverse link, with or without power control. The results are compared to those obtained through analysis method for mutual verification. Results also include the sectorization of base station antenna to realize if the system capacity can actually be raised for about three times.
