Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the “dark nuances” of social media by identifying moral disengagement (MD) mechanisms and hostile emotions in people discussing the hosting of immigrants and examining the relationship between MD mechanisms and hostile emotions expressed online (annoyance, irritation and contempt). Design/methodology/approach The method was based on a psycho-lexicographical approach that analysed the in vivo real words, adopting a quanti-qualitative point of view. The investigation started from the case of a Facebook post in support of immigrants after a serious shipwreck causing the death of more than 700 would-be migrants. More than 10,000 comments were codified. For the comments against the hosting of such immigrants, the authors followed a codebook aimed at identifying MD mechanisms and hostile emotions. Findings The main findings show an interplay between different hostile negative emotions and online MD mechanisms. The greater the intensity of hostile emotions, the more the locus of disengagement moves from the unethical individual’s behaviour – for example, offering moral justifications – to the target recipient of such behaviour – for example, blaming or dehumanising. Practical implications The study could be applicable in designing and developing algorithms and technological tools aimed at preventive interventions to promote moral awareness and emotional regulation in online settings. Social implications The study may be a useful contribution to understanding unethical orientation by identifying areas where education can intervene in reducing harmful behavioural tendencies. Originality/value This study takes together expressed hostile emotions and MD mechanisms by means of the analysis of real words in vivo through social media discussions.

Abstract:
The Commonwealth Games Federation recently awarded the hosting of the 2022 Games to Durban, South Africa. This will be the first time the Games are hosted in the African continent. The paper looks into whether tangible benefits for hosting mega-events are less or more important than intangible benefits. In investigating this issue, the paper takes a political geography theoretical stance for its ability to provide normative ideological content for explaining intangible and tangible values for hosting Commonwealth Games. The paper looks at pros and cons for investing in mega-event infrastructure and also looks at the cost of hosting the Games for cities. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi budgeted $240 million for the entire Games, but the actual costs after the Games were found to be $1.7 billion. Similarly, in 2014 Glasgow, the cost of the Games was calculated at £575 million ($690 million). The paper looks at whether South Africa as the 2022 Commonwealth Games host can afford the games. It also considers the impact of the Games on national identity, national pride and patriotism here identified as novelty values that preserve social cohesion, a social attribute that has to be in place to build a robust economy. The paper concludes by noting that the success of the Games will depend on deliberate investment in catalytic facilities in areas that will be sustained post event. The amount of novelty value generated out of the Commonwealth Games will depend on how successful the Games are and on how the communities are able to interact with the facilities post event.

Abstract:
We explore conditions under which a multiproduct firm can profitably turn itself into a platform by “hosting rivals,” that is, by inviting rivals to sell products or services on top of its core product. Hosting eliminates the additional shopping costs to consumers of buying a specialist rival’s competing version of the multiproduct firm’s noncore product. On the one hand, this makes it easier for the rival to compete on the noncore product. On the other hand, hosting turns the rival from a pure competitor into a complementor: the value added by its product now helps raise consumer demand for the multiproduct firm’s core product. As a result, hosting can be both unilaterally profitable for the multiproduct firm and jointly profitable for both firms. This paper was accepted by Joshua Gans, business strategy.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how a legacy of event hosting competencies from one event can contribute to advancing the overall hosting capacity of a nation for future events. More specifically, the project focuses on determining the event hosting capacity legacies from the Men’s Under-20 2007 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) event in Canada and how they contributed toward winning the rights for the Women’s FIFA World Cup 2015 event. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative case study design focusing on FIFA events held in Canada in 2007 and 2015 was used. Findings Four broad event hosting capacity legacies from the U-20 2007 event that potentially impacted Canada’s ability to secure the WWC 2015 were identified. These legacies included: exemplifying success, advancement of hosting concepts, staff and leadership experience and development and enhancement of sporting infrastructure. Research limitations/implications The findings formed the basis of a discussion on the increasing formalization of event organizing committees, the need to consider collective (i.e. multiple events) legacies in the development of hosting strategies as well as the importance of developing the trust of the local community to support future sport event bids and hosting. Originality/value The originality and value of this research paper lies in its use of empirical case study findings to illustrate the potential for hosting capacity legacies of sporting events as well as the level and type of event under investigation (i.e. large-scale, football/soccer).

Abstract:
This paper presents a stochastic approach to single-phase and three-phase EV charge hosting capacity for distribution networks. The method includes the two types of uncertainties, aleatory and epistemic, and is developed from an equivalent method that was applied to solar PV hosting capacity estimation. The method is applied to two existing low-voltage networks in Northern Sweden, with six and 83 customers. The lowest background voltage and highest consumption per customer are obtained from measurements. It is shown that both have a big impact on the hosting capacity. The hosting capacity also depends strongly on the charging size, within the range of charging size expected in the near future. The large range in hosting capacity found from this study—between 0% and 100% of customers can simultaneously charge their EV car—means that such hosting capacity studies are needed for each individual distribution network. The highest hosting capacity for the illustrative distribution networks was obtained for the 3.7 kW single-phase and 11 kW three-phase EV charging power.

Abstract:
Abstract The present study aims to help better understand the cognitive and affective processes at work in ‘moral struggles’ concerning discussions about hosting immigrants. In particular, it will focus on the prosocial aspect of the debate on hosting of immigrants since previous studies have stressed mainly its racist nature. To this end, a total of 12,583 comments were extracted from the Facebook page of an Italian singer, divided into prosocial and proself stances, and analysed by developing a specific coding based on the theory of helping behaviour in emergency (Darley and Latané 1968) and the theory of moral agency (Bandura 1991). Prosocial processes were defined on the basis of the following ‘loci’: recipients, behaviour, consequences and agency. In parallel the comments were analysed by emotional coding to identify the levels of expressed anger. The results showed a wide variety of prosocial stances associated with these loci in online arguments within real sentences. Prosocial commenters can use words as weapons toward proself commenters to win their ‘crusade’ when they are flamed, and they are ‘cold’ when they focus on recipient and consequences. Finally, results suggested that a dialogue between prosocial and proself positions can occur in the presence of a moderate level of anger.

Abstract: Data hosting on cloud decreases cost of IT maintenance and data reliability get enhance. Nowadays, customers can store their data on single cloud, which has some drawbacks. First is vendor lock in problem and second is security on cloud. The solution to this problem is to store the data on different cloud server without redundancy using encryption algorithm. Customers do not want to lose their sensitive data on cloud. Another issue of cloud computing is data thievery should be overcome to supply higher service. Multi-cloud environment has ability to scale back security risks. To avoid security risk we offer framework. Palacín, Mateo Manuel. "The Internet ecosystem: a traffic measurement analysis." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/326736.

Full text
Abstract:
The analysis of the interconnection status-quo between content providers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) is essential to understand the evolution of the Internet ecosystem. In the last years we have witnessed a spectacular increase of Internet traffic, especially multimedia content, which has driven both content providers and operators to rethink their interconnection models. This thesis performs an extensive traffic analysis from two perspectives to understand the rationale behind the Internet players. First, we analyse the traffic from the perspective of the evolution of the Internet protocols. Analyzing the protocols we pretend to observe whether the traffic pattern has changed while new applications have emerged and the demand have exploded. Second, we collect a dataset of Internet traces to evaluate the connectivity between access ISPs and the most popular content providers. Analyzing the Internet traces we want to identify the correlations in the interconnection models that different Internet players use.

Odhiambo, Doreen Anyango. "The hosting of major sports events in developing countries : what can Kenya learn from South Africa?" Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2015. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/16669/.

Full text
Abstract:
Developed countries have dominated the hosting of major sports events for many decades, however recent years have witnessed cities and nations from ‘developing countries’ bidding to stage and actually hosting these events. This thesis examines the growing interest of developing countries in hosting major sports events. There were three main objectives. First, to outline the relationship between African countries and the global sports system (GSS), with a specific focus on Kenya and South Africa. Second, to critically assess the understandings of key actors and agencies in Kenya with respect to the possibilities and challenges of hosting major sports events, in comparison with actors and agencies in South Africa. Third, to investigate the knowledge transfer process with respect to the hosting of major sports events, using Kenya as an example. The thesis adopted a critical realist theoretical framework to examine the structures and agencies of the GSS in order to understand the relationship between it and actors and agencies of sports events in Africa. The thesis argues that, though countries like Kenya may aspire to host one of the major sports events, the actual reality of hosting these events depends on many external factors which are out of their control. The research methodology used in the thesis involved a two-stage qualitative approach through the analysing of archival data and conducting of expert interviews. The researcher reviewed past literature (on sports mega-events, sports policy issues, policy learning and transfer and the history of sport in Kenya) and constructed semi-structured interview guides. The thesis concludes that the structure of the GSS and global sports organizations are not favourable to and are often prohibitive to developing countries in terms of enabling these countries to compete equally with developed countries in hosting sports events, competing in international sports events, and taking part in decision making at the international level. This is contrary to these organizations’ claims to adhere to the values of equality for all their members.

Full text
Abstract:
Submillimeter Galaxies (SMGs) at high redshift are among the best targets to investigate the early evolutionary phases in the lifetime of massive systems, in which a central Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) is heavily obscured and the total emission is dominated by the host galaxy light. The early stages of the evolution of these systems are characterized by the presence of large gas and dust reservoirs that sustain (and obscure) a starburst phase during which galaxies behave as bright SMGs, hosting hidden Quasi--Stellar Objects (QSOs). The main purpose of this work is to investigate the contribution of the Inter--Stellar Medium (ISM) to the obscuration of QSOs in distant SMGs, and unveil the morphological and kinematics properties of these objects. The analysis is based on new ALMA band 4 (1.8-2.4 mm) data of six galaxies at redshift > 2.5 in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). These objects are included in the 7--Ms Chandra exposure which allows an accurate determination of their nuclear properties; they have been selected by their high column density (log N_H > 23), secure spectroscopic redshift and good far--infrared data coverage, resulting in a unique sample with such characteristics. Through the detection of their continuum (i.e., dust-reprocessed) emission at ~ 2.1 mm and of one high-J CO transition per source, we aim at measuring the luminosity and size of dust and molecular gas of these objects to derive their masses and (under simple geometrical assumptions) the ISM column densities. In general, we found that these galaxies are massive (M_H2 ~ 10^10 M_sun) and compact (diameter lower than 3 kpc) systems and that the ISM column densities are of the order of 10^(23-24) cm^-2 This suggests that the galaxy ISM can substantially contribute to the AGN obscuration. In addition, we found indications that two of these sources are well described by a rotating structure and one is possibly undergoing a merger.

Abstract:
The intention of this paper is to analyze the impact of a threat environment in the creation of a hi-tech cluster through the development of an independent defense industry. In order to conclude the implications of a military industry in the development of a hi-tech cluster, it was studied the case of the evolution of Israel’s defense industry into a diverse hi – tech industry (Silicon Wadi). This work emerges from a personal concern in order to understand if there are some benefits or positive side effects in developing an indigenous military industry.  Coming from a country in the developing process that has no military forces (Costa Rica) and at the same time has been struggling to create a hi-tech cluster, I wanted to learn what are the implications in the hi-tech sector for lacking an indigenous defense industry and a threat environment. As it will be presented in this study, the major implication of having an independent defense industry is that it creates a path dependency in the military sector and if it’s handled correctly through the cooperation between academia, military forces and business sectors it will be possible to create transitions of this technologies into civilian applications, diversifying the entrance of resources and creating an entrepreneur environment.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, the prospect of a quantum technology based on a photonic crystal chip hosting a quantum network made of quantum dot spins interacting via single photons is investigated. The mathematical procedure to deal with the Liouville-Von Neumann equation, which describes the time-evolution of the density matrix, was derived for an arbitrary system, giving general equations. Using this theoretical groundwork, a numerical model was then developed to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of entanglement between various qubits produced in a controlled way over the entire quantum network. As a result, an efficient quantum interface was engineered allowing for storage qubits and traveling qubits to exchange information coherently while demonstrating little error and loss in the process; such interface is indispensable for the realization of a functional quantum network. Furthermore, a carefully orchestrated dynamic control over the propagation of the flying qubit showed high-efficiency capability for on-chip single-photon transfer. Using the optimized dispersion properties obtained quantum mechanically as design parameters, a possible physical structure for the photonic crystal chip was constructed using the Plane Wave Expansion and Finite-Difference Time-Domain numerical techniques, exhibiting almost identical transfer efficiencies in terms of normalized energy densities of the classical electromagnetic field. These promising results bring us one step closer to the physical realization of an integrated quantum technology combining both semiconductor quantum dots and sub-wavelength photonic structures.

Abstract:
Equal Employment Opportunity laws are a relatively new construct within the framework of American legal history. This area of law, however, has experienced significant development within a relatively short span of time. Over the last half-century, the Supreme Court of the United States has handed down several landmark decisions, clarifying the law as to what constitutes sexual harassment, and in which circumstances employers can be held liable for the harassing actions of employees. The purpose of this thesis is to examine this development, and to assess the question of whether the awards given to male victims of workplace sexual harassment are comparable to the awards given to female victims.

Abstract:
Abstract: The South African government has boldly set a target for economic growth at 6 percent annually in an effort to reduce unemployment, create wealth and prosperity – effectively working towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in 2015. While there are several other measures already put in place to achieve these goals, another aspect that could help the country reach its target for economic growth and development could be the successful hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The aim of this research is to interrogate ways in which the preparation and the subsequent hosting of the event could be managed in a manner that would enable the country to achieve its growth targets through infrastructure development and effective allocation of resources

Abstract:
The monograph presents an approach to solving the problem of increasing the throughput and processing capacity of seaports in conditions of limiting their territorial dislocation and increasing the unevenness of external and internal cargo flows. The basis of the approach is the proposed system of the main parameters of the dry port and the methodology of simulation modeling of the functioning of the system "seaport - dry port". The material is illustrated with examples of the implementation of the developed approach, including model scenarios of multi-agent optimization of the parameters of the system under study. The proposed approach and the developed methodology can be used to justify management decisions on the balanced development of transport and logistics infrastructure of the regions hosting sea and dry ports. It is intended for specialists of transport and logistics companies, engineering and technical workers engaged in solving problems in the field of logistics, supply chain management and transport infrastructure design. In addition, it is recommended to students in the following programs: postgraduate studies 23.06.01 "Land transport engineering and technology" (focus "Transport and transport-technological systems of the country, its regions and cities, organization of production in transport") and 27.06.01 "Management in technical systems" (focus "Management of transportation processes"); master's degree 23.04.01 "Technology of transport processes" (profile "Organization of transportation and management in a single transport system"); bachelor's degree 38.03.02 "Management" (profile "Logistics") and 23.03.01 "Technology of transport processes".

Abstract:
The “hostile media effect” occurs when opposing partisans perceive identical news coverage of a controversial issue as biased against their own side. This is a robust phenomenon, which has been empirically demonstrated in numerous experimental and observational studies across a variety of issue contexts and has been shown to have important consequences for democratic society. This chapter reviews the literature on the hostile media effect with an eye toward the theoretical explanations for it, its relationship to other psychological processes, and its broader implications for perceived public opinion, news consumption patterns, attitudes toward democratic institutions, and political discourse and participation. Particular attention is paid to how the hostile media phenomenon can help explain the public’s eroding trust in the news media and the recent polarization among news audiences.
AbstractThe pandemic has hit the tourism industry in various ways. P2P accommodation (P2PA) is one of most disrupted sectors. Different types of P2PA hosts are confronting different levels of challenges. From an angle of social equity, the study adopted a resilience model to examine the resilience of P2PA hosts’ business during the first COVID outbreak in Florida, USA. Statistical results show P2PA hosts’ business resilience negatively associates with their housing liability and hosting experience. Social superiority in owning more assets can be a defect in coping with COVID crisis. P2PA operators need to maintain an appropriate level of financial flexibility when faced with the threat of COVID outbreaks. We suggest the government and industrial organizations to distinguish the types of P2PA operators when carrying out rescue plans for the industry.

AbstractCities are considered hotspots of biodiversity due to their high number of habitats such as ruderal areas, wastelands and masonry works hosting peculiar biocoenoses. Urban biodiversity represents a challenging and paradigmatic case for contemporary ecology and nature conservation because a clear distinction between nature reserves and anthropogenic lands is becoming obsolete. In this context, extensive green roofs may represent suitable habitat for ground-nesting birds and wild plants, providing suitable conditions occur. In this paper, case studies are used to show how existing extensive green roofs can be improved in order to make them function as replacement habitat for endangered ground-nesting birds. The setup of an uneven topography, combined with hay spreading and seed sowing, significantly enhanced the reproductive performance of the northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), one of the most endangered ground-nesting birds in Switzerland.

Abstract:
AbstractThe eruption of mud and magma can be influenced by earthquakes and reports date back more than 2000 years. Dozens of examples of eruptions have now been documented in response to both static and dynamic stresses from earthquakes. Already erupting systems are most sensitive to earthquakes compared to initiating new eruptions. Multiple plausible mechanisms have been proposed for triggering eruptions including disrupting particle-rich materials, mobilizing bubbles, or changing permeability—changes may occur both within and outside the reservoir hosting the materials that ultimately erupt. Using historical examples of triggered mud eruptions, we explain why it is unlikely that the Sidoarjo mud flow (sometimes nicknamed “Lusi”) was initiated by an earthquake. As multiparameter monitoring of volcanoes expands, it may eventually be possible to identify triggering mechanisms and how seismic waves influence magma and mud mobility in field settings.

Abstract:
AbstractBlockchain can be successfully utilised in diverse areas, including the financial sector and the Information and Communication Technology environments, such as computational clouds (CC). While cloud computing optimises the use of resources, it does not (yet) provide an effective solution for the secure hosting scheduling and execution of large computing and data applications and prevention of external attacks. This chapter briefly reviews the recent blockchain-inspired task scheduling and information processing methods in computational clouds. We pay special attention to security, intrusion detection, and unauthorised manipulation of tasks and information in such systems. As an example, we present the implementation of a new blockchain-based scheduler in the computational cloud. We defined a new Proof of Schedule consensus algorithm, which works with the Stackelberg game, regulates checking and adding new blocks to the blockchain, and determines how to validate schedules stored in transactions. The proposed model assumes competition between different schedule providers. The winner of such a competition takes account of the client’s requirements faster and prepares an optimal schedule to meet them. The presented scheduler extends the possibilities of using different scheduling modules by the end-users. By delegating the preparation of the schedules, providers can get benefits only for that, without executing customer tasks.

Abstract:
Cultural events create a variety of impacts on the local economy and communities of hosting places. The impacts generated can be of short- or long-term, positive or negative. Literature distinguishes the term ‘impact' from ‘legacy'. While impacts are focused on the economy effects in the short-term, legacy is referred to benefits that remains longer than the event itself. If residents and local stakeholders perceive benefits from an event, thus they will be supportive of hosting in the future. This chapter investigates the issue of literary festivals as tourism opportunity for a destination. It highlights the important role that festivals play within the local communities of the hosting place, including the facilitation of social cohesion and place image. It is based on the perceptions expressed by the different categories of local stakeholders involved in an international literary festival. The study reveals that evaluating and understanding the legacy effects of hosting a cultural event can provide managerial insights for planning, over time, events in a tourism destination.

Purpose – The accelerated lifestyle has led to changes in the way of traveling. The development of technology and the internet has created the opportunity for online contact with people from all over the world, so we can say that traveling has not been this easy and affordable so far. People choose shorter trips, meet the locals, learn about their culture and customs. The paper looks for the benefits of using the Couchsurfing network and its aim is to present the motivation of respondents from former Yugoslav countries to use the network during travel, as well as to host travelers at home. Methodology – The questions for the questionnaire were acquired from the research done by Liu (2012), while the authors entered the offered answers based on a review of the Couchsurfing.com site. Couchsurfing users received online questionnaires via private message and through groups. The questionnaire was also sent through Facebook private messages and posted in private groups. Findings – Based on the results, it is concluded that the dominant motive for using Couchsurfing during the trip is to get to know the local population, culture and customs, as well as hosting and keeping company to travelers visiting this region. Contribution – The social contribution of this paper emphasizes the motives of the Couchsurfing users from the former Yugoslav countries for traveling and hosting travelers. New research can be expanded to the level of Europe or separated for the mentioned countries.

Abstract:
Cloud computing has emerged as a cost-effective paradigm for hosting and delivering services. Cloud providers adopt server consolidation strategies to achieve efficient management of resources. A drawback is that applications running on the same host compete for physical resources. Such interference can affect the performance of applications. Performance monitors are useful tools to detect or even predict performance degradation. However, the monitoring itself can be a source of contention. In this paper, we analyze the influence of performance monitoring overhead in virtualized environments. Furthermore, as a mean to reduce contention for shared resources, we propose an approach to reduce the dimensionality of the performance feature space.

Device companies commonly install memory chips in a disposable or semi-reusable attachment within a product assembly [1]. Attachment examples include single-use medical diagnostic sensors, reusable monitoring probes, disposable catheters and plug in tools having limited cutting, connection or sterilizing cycles. The memory chip provides information about the attachment to a hosting device that controls or operates the attachment. This stored information may include the attachment’s number of connections or uses, calibration coefficients [2] and the manufacturer or patient identification and date. This attachment data can then be used to enforce product requirements regarding reliability, accuracy, safety and brand [3,4]. For example, the host device can alarm the user, shutdown, or prevent attachment operation when the memory data is outside the product’s validated or tested limits.

Abstract:
As computing power continues to grow and high performance computing use increases, ever bigger scientific experiments and tasks can be carried out. However, the management of the computing power necessary to support these ever growing tasks is getting more and more difficult. Increased power consumption, heat generation and space costs for the larger numbers of resources that are required can make local hosting of resources too expensive. Emergence of utility computing platforms offers a solution. We present our recent work to develop an update to our computational markets environment for support of application deployment and brokering across multiple utility computing environments. We develop a prototype to demonstrate the potential benefits of such an environment and look at the longer term changes in the use of computing that might be enabled by such developments.

In ASME 2019 38th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2019-96826.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The Flexible joint is one of the most widely used hang-off systems for deep water catenary riser for its large rotation and load bearing capacity. The fatigue performance of riser hang-off region and fatigue load on the flexible joint highly depend on the rotational stiffness of the flexible joint. Thus, modelling the flexible joint stiffness to accurately simulate the behavior under cyclic bending cycles is critical in global riser fatigue analysis. The load-displacement relationship of a flexible joint typically follows a nonlinear curve, and it shows hysteresis behavior when subject to cyclic bending cycles. However, in current industry practice, the flexible joint stiffness is modelled either as a nonlinear curve or simplified as a fixed value. These simplified methods sometimes can lead to unconservative or over conservative results in riser design. Modelling the flexible joint stiffness in an accurate approach becomes more important especially when the riser fatigue is critical at the hang-off region. In addition, the design of flexible joint will also be impacted by the fatigue load extracted from global fatigue analysis, which is also largely affected by the flexible joint stiffness modelling method. Thus, modelling a flexible joint by accounting for the nonlinear hysteretic stiffness is recommended. This paper compares the different modelling methodologies of the flexible joint for catenary riser hang-off and presents the impact on fatigue performance considering hysteretic behavior. This study considers the effects of wave amplitude and hosting vessel offset. A case study is also presented on the application of all the modelling methods on fatigue performance of an SCR in the Gulf of Mexico. The fatigue behavior is compared for the different modelling methods considering long term wave motion and platform offsets. The impact on the results from different types of hosting platform is also discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper the dynamic response of an electrospun nanocomposite piezoelectric microfiber is investigated. The microfiber is formed by magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in Polyvinylidene (PVDF) matrix. Focus is given on the influence of an AC electric field on the dynamic response of the microfiber. In particular, the resonance frequency of the fiber was assessed under an increasing AC electric field at a wide range of frequencies. The electromechanical test results show that the resonance frequency of the fiber is influenced by the applied voltage and, for this case study, it decreases with increasing voltage. The results reported in this paper suggest that, once the mechanism behind such response is fully understood, composite piezoelectric microfibers can be used to fine-tune the resonance frequency of hosting devices.

This research looks at voter turnout and behavior on the eve of the elections and examines the will for political change. It argues that in the current Lebanese context, there needs to be further political awareness-raising, and campaigns should be more inclusive of women and the queer community. Independent campaigns should focus on developing strong governing capacities that voters can trust, and create further space for civic and political engagement on the local and national levels.

Integration of ICT significantly increases the possibilities of the educational process and extends the boundaries of the educational sphere as a whole. Publicly available resources, such as e-mail, blogs, forums, online applications, video hosting sites, can serve as the basis for building open learning and education. Informational educational technologies of learning foreign languages are in the focus of this study. The article represents the results of theoretical analysis of content on the subject of its personal- and didactic-definite orientation, as well as some aspects of the practical use of commonly used YouTube video materials in the process of teaching German as the first or second foreign language in higher education, namely at the pedagogical university. Taking into account the practical experience of using the materials of several relevant thematic YouTube channels with a fairly wide constant audience, a concise didactic analysis of their product is presented and recommendations on converting video content into methodological material in the framework of practical course of German language by future teachers are offered. Due to the suggested recommendations, the following tasks can be solved: enrichment of the vocabulary; semantization of phraseological units, constant figures of speech, cliché; development of pronunciation skills; expansion of linguistic competence; improving listening and speaking skills; increasing motivation to learn, etc.

Abstract:
In October 2017, the Coordinating Board of the US Committee on the Marine Transportation System tasked the MTS Resilience Integrated Action Team to identify the impacts, best practices, and lessons learned by federal agencies during the 2017 hurricane season. The RIAT studied the resiliency of the MTS by targeting its ability to prepare, respond, recover, and adapt to and from disruptions by turning to the collective knowledge of its members. Utilizing interagency data calls and a targeted workshop, the RIAT gauged the disruptive effect of the 2017 hurricane season and how Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria affected the operating status of at least 45 US ports across three major regions. This report identifies recommendations to better understand how the MTS can prepare for future storms and identifies activities by federal agencies that are contributing towards resilience. Such actions include hosting early pre-storm preparedness meetings, prioritizing communication between agencies and information distribution, and maintaining or updating existing response plans. Recommendations also target challenges experienced such as telecommunication and prioritization assistance to ports and critical infrastructure. Finally, the report offers opportunities to minimize the impacts experienced from storms and other disruptions to enhance the resilience of the MTS and supporting infrastructure.

Abstract:
Surveys often require monitoring during data collection to ensure progress in meeting goals or to evaluate the interim results of an embedded experiment. Under complex designs, the amount of data available to monitor may be overwhelming and the production of reports and charts can be costly and time consuming. This is especially true in the case of longitudinal surveys, where data may originate from multiple waves. Other such complex scenarios include adaptive and responsive designs, which were developed to act on the results of such monitoring to implement prespecified options or alternatives in protocols. This paper discusses the development of an interactive web-based data visualization tool, the Adaptive Total Design (ATD) Dashboard, which we designed to provide a wide array of survey staff with the information needed to monitor data collection daily. The dashboard was built using the R programming language and Shiny framework and provides users with a wide range of functionality to quickly assess trends. We present the structure of the data used to populate the dashboard, its design, and the process for hosting it on the web. Furthermore, we provide guidance on graphic design, data taxonomy, and software decisions that can help guide others in the process of developing their own data collection monitoring systems. To illustrate the benefits of the dashboard, we present examples from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). We also discuss features of the dashboard to be developed for future waves of Add Health.

Abstract:
Literature focusing on the aftermath of conflict in the Western Balkans, notes that many people remain focused on stereotypes and prejudices between different ethnic groups stoking fear of a return to conflict. This rapid review examines evidence focussing on various interventions that seek to promote inter-group relations that are greatly elusive in the political realm in the Western Balkan. Socio-political change requires a growing critical mass that sees the merit in progressive and conciliatory ethnic politics and is capable of side-lining divisive ethno-nationalist forces. This review provides an evidence synthesis of pathways through which micro-level, civil-society-based interventions can produce ‘ripple effects’ in society and scale up to affect larger geographic areas and macro-level socio-political outcomes. These interventions help in the provision of alternative platforms for dealing with divisive nationalism in post-conflict societies. There is need to ensure that the different players participating in reconciliation activities are able to scale up and attain broader reach to ensure efficacy and hence enabling them to become ‘multiplier of peace.’ One such way is by providing tools for activism. The involvement of key people and institutions, who are respected and play an important role in the everyday life of communities and participants is an important factor in the design and success of reconciliation initiatives. These include the youth, objective media, and journalists. The transformation of conflict identities through reconciliation-related activities is theorised as leading to the creation of peace constituencies that support non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and sustainable peace The success of reconciliation interventions largely depends on whether it contributes to redefining otherwise antagonistic identities and hostile relationships within a community or society.
