Abstract:
Abstract A rapid, sensitive method is described for the determination of5-(methylamlno)-2-phenyl-4-[3-(trlfluoromethyl)phenyl]-3- (2M)-furanone (RE-40885) concentrations in 3 soil types. The method consists of extraction of soil samples with methanol, filtration, liquid chromatographic separation of methanolsoluble components using a C18 column, and UV detection at 275 nm. Recoveries were 94, 96, and 94% from the Greenville, Cecil, and Dothan soils, respectively. Average relative standard deviation was 8.0% in the Greenville soil. The qualitative limit of detection was 20 ppb and the limit of quantitation was 40 ppb in 25 g soil samples.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the Anglotopian visions of universal peace in the context of fin-de-siècle debates about democracy, empire, race, and war. It contends that the most ambitious projects for Anglo-American synthesis promoted the idea of global racial peace — the abolition of war through the unification of Britain and the United States. Recognizing the character and significance of such arguments requires a reappraisal of the genealogy of modern peace discourse. After delineating several popular visions of peace that circulated during the nineteenth century, the chapter introduces the “democratic war thesis” and the “democratic empire thesis.” The former posited that democratic political structures caused or exacerbated inter-state conflict, while the latter suggested that vast empires could cooperatively govern the world and eradicate war. The chapter examines the racial peace thesis, which was propounded, albeit in different forms, by Andrew Carnegie, Cecil J. Rhodes, W. T. Stead, and H. G. Wells, many of the science fiction writers discussed in Chapter 5, and an array of other unionist political thinkers. This was the utopian core of the Anglo-racial dreamworld.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the teen years of cinema, which roughly corresponds to World War I, 1914–1918. Many of the changes were under way before the war and only reached full development afterwards. Thus, the Hollywood studio system had its roots at the start of the teens, and it is only considered fully developed with the arrival of M-G-M in 1924. It was in these years that Hollywood first became synonymous with ‘the movies’ for the large majority of filmgoers, at home and abroad. The development and increasing sophistication of Hollywood film-making are clear subjects of study. In terms of film-makers, D. W. Griffith and Cecil B. De Mille are key examples; both directors can be studied in order to understand the development of Hollywood's narrative and continuity system. While this was not fully developed until the end of the teens, the conventions on which it is built can be clearly identified in the work of both directors. Outside the USA, there are many interesting developments and changes. However, it is quite difficult to access copies of the films from this period.
