Abstract:
Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej Wielkiej Brytanii przyszło prowadzić politykę z pozycji upadającego mocarstwa, swoistego syndyka imperialnej masy upadłościowej. Całość wpływów i zamorskich posiadłości została uzyskana na długo przed II wojną światową, która praktycznie nie przyniosła nowych stref interesu. Wychowani na sukcesach Imperium oraz bohaterstwie Horatio Kitchenera i Cecila Rhodesa, dumni Brytyjczycy przez długi czas nie zamierzali pogodzić się z utratą swojego znaczenia. Nawet jeśli Wielka Brytania nie była już globalną potęgą, to Brytyjczycy tak ją ciągle postrzegali. Był to swoisty dogmat brytyjskiej polityki. W wyraźny sposób rzutowało to na politykę zagraniczną i obronną, rzeczywistość bowiem (coraz mniejsza siła i wpływy) ścierała się z fałszywą autopercepcją. Nadal jednak działali jak mocarstwo, które ma swoje interesy na całym świecie. Pomimo ambicji i zabiegów polityka imperialna stawała się coraz bardziej „obroną pewnego konceptu, wartości politycznej niż realizowaniem konkretnych działań operacyjnych”. Brytyjczycy przez długi czas nie chcieli się jednak z tym pogodzić wychodząc z założenia, że ich naród i państwo zbyt wiele poświęciły, by „zostać zredukowanym do roli zimnej i nic nieznaczącej wysepki, na której wszyscy powinni ciężko pracować żyjąc z połowu śledzi i uprawy kartofli”.
