Abstract:
This study aims to search the relationship between the decline of the Atlas cedar and the eco-dendrometrique factors in the National Park of Theniet El Had located in the north-west of Algeria. This study takes place throughout 30 circular plots of 1.000m2 area in which, a dendrometric measures and ecological data are taken in addition to descriptive data for Atlas cedar trees. The descriptive data shows that 34% of inventoried Atlas cedar have damaged leaves and 30% have more then 25% of their crowns damaged. The analysis of variance shows that there is no relationship between the rate of the Atlas cedar decline ant the ecological factors, components of the soil and dendrometric parameters except for the average circumference witch is influenced by the competition between trees. Therefor, a particular management plan for the regulation of competition is a necessity for this park.

Abstract:
Natural lightscapes are an important resource for parks and protected areas, including Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument. Both locations offer night sky interpretive programs, attracting over 27,000 visitors annually, equaling all other interpretive programs combined. Parks need to understand what drives visitor interest and park managers need to assess if night sky interpretation is meeting expectations. A total of 1,179 night and day visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument served as participants and completed a 36-item survey measuring knowledge, attitudes, benefits, and behaviors related to the night sky. Results show those who attended a night sky interpretive program gained a significant amount of knowledge about night sky issues. Both day and night visitors have strongly held attitudes about light pollution and the protection of the night sky in national parks.

ABSTRACT The plant collection block is a part of the Great Forest Park of Wan Abdul Rachman that contains varie of plant species, either pristine plant or not and rare or not rare which are needed to be protected and preserved. The plant collection block condition has been changed to be cultivation land. This condition is feared can interfere the existence of rare plants species such as devil tree (Alstonia scholaris) and cedar (Toona sureni). This research was done at the plant collection block in Great Forest Park of Wan Abdul Rachman on September--October 2013. This research is aimed to determine the density, distribution, condition, and coordinates position of devil tree and cedar. The data was taken by used checkered lines method with 0.1% sampling intensity. The sampling area was about 8,455.4 m2, then divided into 20 plots. The distance between lines was 200 m and plots was 100 m. The result showed that the devil tree density was higher amount of 15 stems/ha than cedar density of 7 stems/ha in a row. The frequency of devil tree was found in observation plots about 0.25 stems/ha that was higher than cedar frequency which only of 0.15 stems/ha. Cedar grown by 5 stems, that amount the criteria of main tree as many as 1 stem in the 20th plot. Devil tree grown by 4 stems, that amount the criteria of main tree as many as 1 stem in the 19th plot. Keywords : plant collection block, parent tree, rare tree

Abstract:
Yellow-cedar ( Callitropsis nootkatensis (D. Don) Örsted ex D.P. Little) is in a century-long decline coinciding with the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA). The leading hypothesis explaining this decline is a decrease in insulating snowpack due to warming and increased susceptibility to damaging frosts in the root zone. A ring-width series from yellow-cedar on Excursion Ridge (260 m a.s.l.) in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, and another from trees on Pleasant Island (150 m a.s.l.) in the Tongass National Forest in Icy Strait were compared with regional monthly temperature and precipitation data from Sitka, Alaska, to investigate the changing growth response to temperature at these sites. Comparisons with monthly temperatures from 1832 to 1876 during the end of the Little Ice Age show that the high-elevation Excursion Ridge and the low-elevation Pleasant Island sites strongly favored warmer January through July temperatures. Both tree populations have markedly changed their response from a positive to a strong negative correlation with January through July temperatures since 1950. This strong negative response to warming by the yellow-cedar together with a positive relationship with total March and April precipitation suggests that these yellow-cedar sites may be susceptible to decline. Furthermore, these analyses are consistent with the hypothesis that the yellow-cedar decline is linked to decreased snowpack.

Abstract:
The vegetation of Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, U.S.A., was investigated, in part to establish a plant community classification system that would be useful to park managers and naturalists, and to evaluate short-term changes within plant communities. Samples from 120 stands were ordinated and classified on the basis of synecological coordinates, a system of ecological coordinates relating floristics to physical site conditions. Along indirect gradients of moisture and nutrient conditions, 12 ecological types were distinguished. Within each ecological type, it is expected that stands of diverse cover types will tend to converge, over a period of 150–200 years, on an edaphically constrained “climax” community characteristic of that ecological type, given present management practices and disturbance regimes. Permanent plots were established in 46 stands to permit future testing of these projections. Ecological types, named for expected dominants and for a typical undergrowth species or genus, include (1) jack pine – oak – Arctostaphylos; (2) red pine – white pine – Linnaea; (3) fir–spruce–birch–Lycopodium; (4) fir–birch–Mitella; (5) oak–maple–Uvularia; (6) ash–elm–Trillium; (7) black ash – Caltha; (8) white cedar – Coptis; (9) black spruce – Alnus; (10) black spruce – Kalmia; (11) leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne) bog; and (12) marsh.

Abstract:
<p> The transmission of the gospel relies heavily on the continuous and faithful proclamation of the gospel and on the positive response of the hearers to enter a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Preaching serves as a primary means by which the gospel of Jesus moves forward. While the bulk of gospel proclamation is one-way communication, the ultimate result focuses on moving the hearer to accept the gospel message. This could take place in large rallies, small gatherings, or in one-on-one conversations. </p><p> This project examines the possibility of increased receptivity to the gospel by connecting with a spiritual coach to assist a person on his or her journey to understanding and positively responding to the gospel. It also pursues the biblical precedent of incorporating questions into the spiritual seekers&rsquo; discovery process. This project sees the message of salvation as something the person must uncover, discover, understand, and then respond to. Coupling a spiritual seeker with a spiritual life coach can help guide the seeker to pursue and positively respond to Christ. </p><p> Four Christians and three non-Christians participated in six, one-on-one coaching sessions with me. The knowledge and awareness of their spiritual life was tracked and assessed. The goal was to test and measure how the coaching approach enabled the spiritual seeker to grow in understanding, accepting and advancing the gospel.</p><p>

Abstract:

Throughout the twentieth century, through the performance of pianeiros, the practice of the piano in samba established itself as a tradition that Cesar Camargo Mariano would to fall heir. The first two chapters stand out periods in which the piano works significantly in the history of samba: 1) from the late nineteenth century until the 1930s with musical genres that originated the samba through the pianeiros; 2) and in the 1960s, in formation of trio (bass, piano and drums), with the instrumental repertoire of bossa nova and samba-jazz. The third chapter consists of the analysis of three musical pieces recorded by Cesar Camargo Mariano in the album Solo Brasileiro (Polygram, 1994): Cristal, Samambaia and Minha Mágoa, which aims to recognize characteristic features of the tradition of pianeiros the musical text, as well as identify stylistic features of samba for solo piano by Cesar Camargo Mariano<br>Esta dissertação trata de relações entre o piano instrumento musical associado à cultura européia e de difícil mobilidade e o samba gênero musical associado às classes populares e a uma certa imagem da cultura afro-brasileira.

Abstract:
These manifestations can be found in various aspects. Due to this scenario, efforts have been made to implement mechanisms to stop the violence. In this regard, Law No. 30364 arises to grant protection measures to victims of violence. These protection measures should aim at finding a specific solution that addresses the particular case in which a victim is found. However, this does not happen in reality. The judges grant these measures without landing their analysis in each specific case. Therefore, the measures will not be complied with by the parties, since it is not possible to truly analyze and eradicate the problem. In this research work, nine judicial resolutions were analyzed, which allowed us to demonstrate that there is no real intention to eradicate violence, but that only the formality of granting these protection measures is complied with. As a consequence, violence continues to spread in our society and many women will continue to be victims of it.

We emphasize both authors as transition figures, since they stand in a liminar position in relation to the social, historical and cultural moments in which they have lived. We try to show the importance of translation practice not only as a means through which women have achieved access to the lettered world but also to the formation of Ana Cristina’s feminine author identity. We also point out the existence of affinities between Ana Cristina and Mansfield due to questions related to the roles they have played as women. In order to discuss Ana Cristina’s translation practice, we use, among others, concepts extracted from the thought of translation scholars and of intellectuals who have dedicated themselves to literary criticism in general. We analyse how studies which emerged at the end of the 1970s and at the beginning of the 1980s influenced Ana Cristina’s translation of “Bliss” and we verify the way through which she has anticipated postures that are dear to the most recent moments of the discipline Translation Studies.

Abstract:
March 1919 . Somebody killed the trader at Cedar Springs. The murderer also set fire to the trading post, and soon the dried-out floor planks and the roof beams and split-cedar ceiling erupted in smoke and flame. Except for its sandstone walls, the building would have burned to the ground. The next day a plume of smoke still hung in the Arizona sky, and people from miles around came to see what was the matter. Few automobiles had reached the windy expanses of the Navajo Reservation in those days, and men and women of all ages filed in by foot and horseback and in their buggies and buckboards. The first ones to arrive found the corpse of Charley Hubbell. Cedar Springs was less than a crossroads, not really a hamlet. It stood within a circle of rough-sided buttes a few miles east of the main road between Hopi and Winslow. It consisted of a combined general store, trading post and post office, plus various pens and corrals. Navajos from a considerable distance came to exchange sheep and handcrafts for the things they needed. Charley Hubbell lived at the trading post and presided over what went on. The people who found his body dispatched a messenger on a fast horse toward Ganado, fifty miles northeast, to find Charley’s nephew Lorenzo, who was known throughout Navajo country. A man of giant girth and matching gravitas, Juan Lorenzo Hubbell had bought the Ganado trading post forty years earlier. With acumen and persistence he built a string of almost thirty such establishments from one end of Navajo country to the other. In many cases he appointed members of his large, mixed Anglo and Hispanic family to run them. The post near Ganado, to which the messenger was sent, served as his home and headquarters. Together with its broad sprawl of barns, corrals, and storage sheds, it is preserved today as Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park System.

Abstract:
Throughout the forests of the Northwest Coast of North America— those few forests that have not been logged—one finds cedar trees from which long strips of bark have been removed. These strips were taken, at various times in the recent or distant past, by local Native American peoples, to use for a wide variety of reasons. The trees were never cut for their bark; only one long, narrow strip was removed. The process made it necessary for someone to climb high up in the tree to cut the top of the strip. This difficult and dangerous climb was economically reasonable; cutting a cedar is a long job, and would, in any case, eliminate the chance of future bark. But the climb was required for a more immediate and compelling reason: the cedar is sacred, and its indwelling spirit must be respected. Wanton cutting of a cedar is unthinkable. Before a cut is made, prayers and apologies are made to the tree. The cutter explains that he or she really needs the bark, and often adds that he or she will take as little as possible, in the most careful way. In spite of two centuries of contact with, and borrowing from, the outside world, this reverence for the cedar continues today. It is part of a wider religious involvement with the landscape—with water, mountains, plants, and animals— that incorporates environmental management rules as part of sacred ethics. Across the Pacific from China, the Native American peoples of the Northwest Coast maintained, until recently, a way of life based on fishing. While the Chinese changed from foragers to farmers, and slowly built the world’s most populous civilization, the Northwest Coast Indians developed more and more sophisticated ways of harvesting the abundant fish and shellfish resources of their cold and rainy coastlines and rivers. Although they built no cities and wrote down no literature, they created a brilliant, complex culture that had an extremely finetuned adjustment to its environment.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), a body of independent experts assigned the task of monitoring states’ efforts to fulfil their obligations under the CEDAW Convention. The principal basis for monitoring was to be the submission and review of reports submitted regularly by States parties. The chapter then addresses the work of CEDAW and its contribution to making the guarantees of the Convention a reality. An assessment of the record of a treaty body such as CEDAW must take into account, among other factors, the mandate of the body, the expertise and commitment of its members, the political and international legal context of its work, the resources available to it, the efficiency and effectiveness of its procedures, and the quality and impact of its output.

Abstract:
In her chapter, Professor Nussbaum suggests that CEDAW has failed to have the transformative effect on women’s lives that was anticipated at its adoption. Framing CEDAW as part of a social movement, Professor Nussbaum shows that there has been what she calls modest progress, but concludes that much remains to be done. This in turn leads her to question the efficacy of CEDAW and international law in the struggle for women’s equality. This response argues that the Committee has made a great deal of normative progress in three of the key areas identified in Professor Nussbaum’s chapter: intersectionality, reproductive rights, and violence against women. It also highlights how much CEDAW has impacted positively on the work of other Committees and in the development of human rights standards globally.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the struggle for women’s rights and gender equality in Pakistan in recent decades through the lens of the experimentalist account of human rights. It describes the work of women’s groups and other activists in Pakistan to advance the rights of women in a highly patriarchal political and social system, and their engagement over time with international human rights law and institutions as part of those efforts, in particular the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Activists have drawn on the support of transnational networks and have used international human rights institutions, including CEDAW as well as the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council, to increase pressure on governmental and other domestic actors to introduce change. Despite the huge scale of the social and political obstacles facing their efforts at reform, many significant changes have been introduced as a consequence of domestic mobilization and engagement. The chapter outlines some of these contested legal and political processes over time and the reforms that have gradually been brought about, as well as the limitations they have confronted.

In ASME 2013 15th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2013-96113.

Abstract:
In decontamination pilot projects conducted by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), many different techniques were tested to determine their applicability to remediate areas evacuated after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident following the Great Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011. In addition to buildings, roads and farmland, the forest adjacent to living areas was one of the main decontamination targets. The projects evaluated the radioactive contamination of trees and the effectiveness of decontaminating a highly contaminated evergreen forest. This forest was located 1.3 km southwest of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and is dominated by Japanese cedar trees and fir trees. As the first step, three Japanese cedar trees and three fir trees were cut down and the distributions of radioactive cesium (Cs) were measured in each. The total concentrations of 134Cs and 137Cs in the leaves and branches were about 1 MBq/kg for both cedar and fir trees, and were appreciably higher than in the bark for cedar. The concentrations in the outer part of the trunks (under the bark) were lower, on the order of 10 kBq/kg, and those in the core of the trunks were lower than 1 kBq/kg for both kinds of trees. The observation that the Cs concentrations are higher in the outer part of trees, is compatible with the assumption that radio-Cs was mostly adsorbed on the surface of trees and partly penetrated into the trunks through the bark. Evolution of air dose rates in a 100 × 60 m pasture adjacent to the forest was monitored during decontamination of the forest and of the pasture itself. The dose rates in the pasture decreased drastically after stripping contaminated topsoil from the pasture and decreased slightly more after stripping contaminated topsoil of the forest floor and pruning the trees. Cutting down and removing 84 trees in the outermost area (10-m width) of the forest also slightly decreased these dose rates. After decontamination, the residual dose rates around the highly contaminated forest were mostly attributed to radioactive Cs existing in or on trees and topsoil in the untouched forest beyond the decontaminated area.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Cooper, Christopher, Jacob McDonald, and Eric Starkey. Wadeable stream habitat monitoring at Congaree National Park: 2018 baseline report. National Park Service, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2286621.

Full text
Abstract:
The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) Wadeable Stream Habitat Monitoring Protocol collects data to give park resource managers insight into the status of and trends in stream and near-channel habitat conditions (McDonald et al. 2018a). Wadeable stream monitoring is currently implemented at the five SECN inland parks with wadeable streams. These parks include Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (HOBE), Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park (KEMO), Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park (OCMU), Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT), and Congaree National Park (CONG). Streams at Congaree National Park chosen for monitoring were specifically targeted for management interest (e.g., upstream development and land use change, visitor use of streams as canoe trails, and potential social walking trail erosion) or to provide a context for similar-sized stream(s) within the park or network (McDonald and Starkey 2018a). The objectives of the SECN wadeable stream habitat monitoring protocol are to: Determine status of upstream watershed characteristics (basin morphology) and trends in land cover that may affect stream habitat, Determine the status of and trends in benthic and near-channel habitat in selected wadeable stream reaches (e.g., bed sediment, geomorphic channel units, and large woody debris), Determine the status of and trends in cross-sectional morphology, longitudinal gradient, and sinuosity of selected wadeable stream reaches. Between June 11 and 14, 2018, data were collected at Congaree National Park to characterize the in-stream and near-channel habitat within stream reaches on Cedar Creek (CONG001, CONG002, and CONG003) and McKenzie Creek (CONG004). These data, along with the analysis of remotely sensed geographic information system (GIS) data, are presented in this report to describe and compare the watershed-, reach-, and transect-scale characteristics of these four stream reaches to each other and to selected similar-sized stream reaches at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, and Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Surveyed stream reaches at Congaree NP were compared to those previously surveyed in other parks in order to provide regional context and aid in interpretation of results. edar Creek’s watershed (CONG001, CONG002, and CONG003) drains nearly 200 square kilometers (77.22 square miles [mi2]) of the Congaree River Valley Terrace complex and upper Coastal Plain to the north of the park (Shelley 2007a, 2007b). Cedar Creek’s watershed has low slope and is covered mainly by forests and grasslands. Cedar Creek is designated an “Outstanding Resource Water” by the state of South Carolina (S.C. Code Regs. 61–68 [2014] and S.C. Code Regs. 61–69 [2012]) from the boundary of the park downstream to Wise Lake. Cedar Creek ‘upstream’ (CONG001) is located just downstream (south) of the park’s Bannister Bridge canoe landing, which is located off Old Bluff Road and south of the confluence with Meyers Creek. Cedar Creek ‘middle’ and Cedar Creek ‘downstream’ (CONG002 and CONG003, respectively) are located downstream of Cedar Creek ‘upstream’ where Cedar Creek flows into the relatively flat backswamp of the Congaree River flood plain. Based on the geomorphic and land cover characteristics of the watershed, monitored reaches on Cedar Creek are likely to flood often and drain slowly. Flooding is more likely at Cedar Creek ‘middle’ and Cedar Creek ‘downstream’ than at Cedar Creek ‘upstream.’ This is due to the higher (relative to CONG001) connectivity between the channels of the lower reaches and their out-of-channel areas. Based on bed sediment characteristics, the heterogeneity of geomorphic channel units (GCUs) within each reach, and the abundance of large woody debris (LWD), in-stream habitat within each of the surveyed reaches on Cedar Creek (CONG001–003) was classified as ‘fair to good.’ Although, there is extensive evidence of animal activity...
