Abstract:
An experimental study of a solar-radiant heating system was performed at Iowa State University’s Energy Research House (ERH). The ERH was constructed with copper tubes embedded in the plaster ceilings, thus providing a unqiue radiant heating system. In addition, 24 water-glycol, flat-plate solar collectors were mounted on the south side of the residence. The present study uses the solar collectors to heat a storage tank via a submerged copper tube coil. Hot water from the storage tank is then circulated through a heat exchanger, which heats the water flowing through the radiant ceiling. This paper contains a description of the solar-radiant system and an interpretation of the data that were measured during a series of transient experiments. In addition, the performance of the flat-plate solar collectors and the water storage tank were evaluated. The characteristics of a solar-to-radiant heat exchanger were also investigated. The thermal behavior of the radiant ceiling and the room enclosures were observed, and the heat transfer from the ceiling by radiation and convection was estimated. The overall heating system was also evaluated using the thermal performances of the individual components. The results of this study verify that it is feasible to use a solar system coupled to a low-temperature radiant-panel heating system for space heating. A sample performance evaluation is also presented.

Abstract:
A hidden ceiling-fan is the new design of embedding and hiding itself deeply into the ceiling floor. This design is different from conventional ceiling-fans or circulating fans that usually without an enclosing housing. The majority part of hidden ceiling-fan is embedded in the ceiling floor; hence the enclosing housing will be needed and be created to surround the axial-flow fan. The housing geometric is critical factor for hidden ceiling-fan because the air flow will pass though the horizontal plane of ceiling floor which the inlet and outlet are almost located at same plane. Consequently, the inappropriate design of enclosing housing will cause inhale-return phenomenon. It affects the induced flow performance of a hidden ceiling-fan. Few studies have investigated fan induced flow and its characteristics in a selected space. In this study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) numerical simulation and experimental investigation were used to predict and valid the flow pattern with different geometric housing and operating conditions. The results showed that the flow pattern has different features as it leaves the fan downward the floor. The unique inhale-return phenomenon probably happens when inappropriate enclosing housing was designed such as high ring-plate and outlet-inlet ratio. Furthermore, the blockage effect will happen if the blockage distance is to short. In conclusion, thissystematic design investigation on hidden ceiling-fan not only provides the fan engineer’s design ability to avoid the inhale-return phenomenon, but also the predicting capability on the air flow induced characteristics and performance.

Abstract:
In multistory buildings, the isolation of sound from floor to ceiling is a major concern. The building codes use an impact insulation class (IIC) rating defined by ASTM to characterize the acoustical performance of floorâ–“ceiling assemblies due to impacts. The measurement process defined in this standard has repeatability and reproducibility limitations due to low-frequency, non-diffuse sound fields in receiving rooms. A comparison method is proposed in this article that uses a reference sample with known sound power to calculate the room or path contribution to the measured sound pressure level, which is then used to calculate the sound power of the floorâ–“ceiling assembly. The proposed method is tested for a small-scale hardboard plate, and the test results are within 1 to 2 dB of baseline sound power values. A simply supported plate used as the reference plate showed MAC values higher than 0.9 for analytical and experimental mode shapes. The analytical natural frequencies are within 1% to 2% of experimental frequencies and analytical sound power values are within 1-2 dB of experimental data. This study showed that for a small-scale assembly, the new methodwas able to characterize the room contribution within 1 to 2 dB.

Abstract:
Interior noise, as one of the indicators of automotive NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) performance, has been associated with an increasing importance in ride comfort evaluation. This paper presents a new method of interior noise reduction based on phononic crystal theory. Considering the lightweight requirement, the car ceiling plate is divided into nine regions to determine where the phononic oscillators should be mounted. By leveraging the acoustic contribution analysis of each region, the phononic crystal is arranged in the region that contributes the most to interior noise, bringing out the best attenuation effect in its bandgap. However, it is noted that at certain frequencies, the vibration of the ceiling plate or other body plates, which exhibits negative contribution to interior noise, should not be attenuated due to their beneficial effects. Thus in this paper, a point defect is employed for the design of a two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystal structure to preserve the negative contribution part of the plate’s vibration at specific frequencies. The validity of the proposed method in interior noise reduction is verified by simulation. Moreover, the error analysis is implemented and an optimization scheme is proposed.

Abstract:
Abstract The current numerical study focuses on the feasibility of furnishing thermal comfort in a structure, by using paraffin wax stored on a plate below the ceiling in a multi-storey building. The method is aimed to reduce energy demands at the increasing thermal loads. In summer, in daytime, walls of the building are exposed to the ambient thermal load, and heat transferred inside is absorbed by the melting wax. The study is numerical. It relates to temperature variations outside and inside, coupled with heat conduction and accumulation in walls, with radiation between the surfaces, with natural convection of air inside and melting of the wax at the ceiling. Fins spacing on the storage plate, visualization of the melting process, and its parametric investigation provide an insight into the physical phenomena. Temperature and flow fields were investigated for 3 mm and 12 mm thick layers of wax. At the specified conditions of the present study a 3 mm layer provides thermal comfort for most of the day, while a 6 mm layer may suffice for the entire day. Fluent 6.3 software was used in the computations.

Abstract:
Since the inlet and outlet of hidden ceiling fan are almost located at the same Plane; thus, an improper housing may cause inhale-return phenomenon which significantly affects its power consumption and performance. In this study, a comprehensive investigation by numerical and experimental techniques was used to predict and identify the flow pattern, airflow rate, efficiency, and noise for ceiling fans with different design parameters. The results showed that the unique inhale-return phenomenon happens for an inappropriate housing. Several key parameters, such as fan guard, housing ring, inlet-to-outlet area ratio, and blockage height, are evaluated for finding out the criterion to avoid the inhale-return flow. Consequently the study finds that fan guard changes the airflow to a wider distribution with a lower velocity. A minimum blockage distance and a maximum height of ring-plate are set at 80 mm and 30 mm, respectively. Also, it is suggested that the inlet area must be bigger than the outlet area. Moreover, all the parameters show the same trend under various rotational speeds. In conclusion, this systematic investigation not only provides the fan engineer's design ability to avoid the inhale-return phenomenon, but also the predicting capability on its aerodynamic and acoustic performances.

Abstract:
Architecture in its primitive form enacted a relationship of making between intentions and outcome. Post- industrialized modernization has created a multiplication of complexities, resulting in a profession that has disengaged theory and practice through the specialization of the architect and the craftsman. Design-build has the ability to be an educational process that re-engages a direct dialog and collaboration of the roles of designer and maker, reinforcing the resilience of culture and place through joining intentions and built reality. Design-build projects have the ability to be an integral part of design education because of their ability to engage in physical manifestation that is fundamentally different than formal education of designing through drawing or design at a distance. Exploring the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center's Design-Build ethos as a primary case study, I intend to support this claim by providing evidence of how a Design-Build process can engage the designer, tools, methods, and materials, with the cultural, social, and environmental context that is sensible to place. By utilizing creativity and ingenuity of available resources as an opportunity for adaptation, an organic sense of place is perceptible, the place is created. Representation beyond drawing encourages one to be proactive in connecting the qualities and characteristics of existing space; this leads to a sustainable practice of continued investment in object, materiality, time, and place. Hybrid approaches to design, or the assembly of both design and building as an academic practice, are no longer insular, but are encouraged as a way to interrelate and connect the built environment with its unbuilt opportunities and impressions.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
This research in the field of sociology of gender aims at understanding the rarity of female referees in the Malagasy Federation of Volleyball (MFVB). The issue concerns the link between the professional practice of arbitration and the norms of sexual identities in the Malagasy society. Due to the lack of existing work on gender and sport in Madagascar, our approach proceeds from an exploratory investigation. The institutional and statistical approach reveals the existence of a double glass ceiling, blocking women's arbitration training, and then, their career promotion. Interviews were conducted, in a qualitative approach, with female referees (8), leaders or managers (17 with 14 men), and a questionnaire was filled in by female volleyball players from Antananarivo (222). All answers point towards the facts but the interpretations vary: the female referees denounce discriminatory processes and the male domination they are facing, leaders legitimize their management practice, relying on the patriarchal norms and values of the Malagasy society, while other male managers do not abide by these positions and other federations promote female arbitration on an international scale. The female volleyball players' responses prove that they are available for the sport and generally express an egalitarian conception of arbitration, a quarter of the women even said they would like to become referee. Although the end of discrimination in the arbitral management of the MFVB seems to depend on internal power relations, the survey shows the emergence of gender mobility in the Malagasy sport community, women referees have actually conquered new public and democratic prerogatives

Abstract:
Transhumanists urge us to pursue the biotechnological heightening of select capacities, above all, cognitive ability, so far beyond any human ceiling that the beings with those capacities would exist on a higher ontological plane. Because transhumanists tout humanity’s self-transcendence via science and technology, and suggest that bioenhancement may be morally required, the human stakes of how we respond to transhumanism are unprecedented and immense. In Posthuman Bliss? The Failed Promise of Transhumanism, Susan B. Levin challenges transhumanists’ overarching commitments regarding the mind, brain, ethics, liberal democracy, knowledge, and reality in a more thoroughgoing and integrated way than has occurred thus far. Her critique shows transhumanists’ notion of humanity’s self-transcendence into “posthumanity” to be pure, albeit seductive, fantasy. Levin’s philosophical conclusions would stand even if, as transhumanists proclaim, science and technology supported their vision of posthumanity. They offer breezy assurances that posthumans will emerge if we but allocate sufficient resources to that end. Yet, far from offering theoretical and practical “proof of concept” for the vision that they urge upon us, transhumanists engage inadequately with cognitive psychology, biology, and neuroscience, often relying on questionable or outdated views within those fields. Having shown in depth why transhumanism should be rejected, Levin defends a holistic perspective on living well that is rooted in Aristotle’s virtue ethics but adapted to liberal democracy. This holism is thoroughly human, in the best of senses. We must jettison transhumanists’ fantasy, both because their arguments fail and because transhumanism fails to do us justice.

Abstract:
This chapter opens the discussion on why working-class Americans—people employed in manual labor, service industry, or clerical jobs—almost never go on to hold political office in the United States. It suggests that the economic gulf between politicians and the people they represent—a so-called government by the privileged or white-collar government—has serious consequences for the American democratic process. Although journalists and scholars have always had hunches about what keeps working-class Americans out of office, to date there has been almost no actual research on why the United States is governed by the privileged or what reformers might do about it. This book tries to change that. It argues that workers are less likely to hold office not because they are unqualified or because voters prefer more affluent candidates, but because workers are simply less likely to run for public office in the first place.

Abstract:
This chapter has two aims. The first is to do what the proponents of the conventional wisdom about workers never do, namely, test their ideas using actual data on U.S. politics. The second is to begin answering this book's larger research question: Why are working-class people virtually absent from American political institutions? The chapter begins by identifying the stage in the candidate entry process that screens working-class people out. Along the way, it also tests two common ideas about the underrepresentation of workers, namely, that workers seldom hold office because they are not fit to govern and because voters prefer affluent candidates. The chapter shows that these ideas do not hold water: workers are not underrepresented in public office because they are less qualified or because voters dislike them, they are underrepresented because they just do not run in the first place.

Abstract:
Systemic manifestations of women's subordination, such as the glass ceiling, are still a reality in organisations. Yet, the glass ceiling effect in the Global South is often conceptualised vis-à-vis (white) women's experience in ‘gendered organisations' and women's domestic role in the Southern societies. In this context, this chapter, based on a fieldwork research conducted in Sri Lanka's apparel industry, critically examines the glass ceiling effect of glass ceiling on women's career advancement in the Global South. Alongside the notion of ‘universal' patriarchy, it problematises the ‘universal' structure of the glass ceiling. And it shows that (un)doing factory women's collective identity—as lamai (little ones)—and the glass ceiling intermingle in the process of women's subordination in the apparel industry. The chapter concludes that, in the apparel industry, the role of managerial women —as well as of men in (un)doing factory women's collective identity—is crucial in keeping the glass ceiling in place.

Abstract:
This essay offers an interpretation of English novelist, John Galsworthy’s sketch, “That Old Time Place,” that examines the symbolic meanings of his descriptions of interstitial spaces in New Orleans’ St. Louis Exchange Hotel. The author demonstrates how a range of the hotel’s in-between spaces—from its stairways, to its high-ceilinged dome, flooded hallways, and vaulted auction block—express and shape a repetitive, unrepentant fantasy of racial mastery underlying the South’s nostalgic version of history—the myth of the Old South. Drawing on the concept of Freudian “uncanny” as the “return of the repressed,” the essay argues that the English narrator’s overwhelming encounter with these in-between spaces of the South reveals his own unconscious attraction/repulsion for a race and class-based British “tradition.”

Abstract:
The second of three chapters on the power of chocolate cities, this chapter centers the lives, activism, and pioneering efforts of three black women professionals, entertainers, and community activists: Mary Hill Sanders, Dionne Warwick, and Alma Burrell. Exploring their lives, health setbacks, and push against the glass ceiling and racial oppression, the authors highlight their sophisticated and politically informed racial geography of the United States. Detailing the movement of black people throughout the domestic diaspora, this chapter illustrates the how gender, place, race, and power collided in the lives of black people before and after the civil rights movement.

Abstract:
While Caroline Bowles has long been remembered as a popular sentimental poet of the 1820s and for becoming Robert Southey’s second wife in the late 1830s, she has never received her due in histories of nineteenth-century British periodicals. A largely unconnected, and deeply conservative country gentlewoman, Bowles was as unlikely a candidate as any to be memorialized as a shatterer of glass ceilings. But in becoming, from 1823 forward, the first woman to serve as a regular contributor to Blackwood’s, Bowles crashed what had hitherto been Romantic-era Britain’s ultimate boys’ club. Even more remarkably, in joining this fraternity, Bowles originally appeared not as a sentimental poetess but as the wickedly satirical author of ‘Letter from a Washerwoman’, one of the magazines most merciless parodies of Leigh Hunt, Percy Shelley, and the affected classicism of Cockney School poets.

Abstract:
For aspiring evangelical women, already subject to the metaphorical glass ceiling, evangelical perspectives on gender roles represent an exacerbating headwind. Ironically, though, when female evangelical executives advance arguments from distinction in advocating for greater representation among the business elite, they may actually reinforce the complementarian theological perspectives that undermine the legitimacy of evangelical women in leadership roles in the first place. Female evangelical executives are indeed more likely than their male counterparts to articulate concern for people relative to profits, embrace broader corporate social responsibilities, and cite feelings and intuition in support of career and business decisions. But women also disproportionately occupy the types of contexts that prompted evangelical executives more broadly—whether women or men—to articulate these particular orientations. Thus, the perspectives of women suggest that professional context and associated expectations supersede gender norms when ordering faith expressions in business.

Abstract:
The paper discusses solutions to the problem of optimally supporting a thin plate, acted upon by its self weight, with a discrete number of supports. Such problems occur, for example, in supporting ceiling tiles with fasteners. The goal is to minimize deflection which is visually unappealing. Minimizing deflection is especially important as the initial deflection increases with time due to creep. Square and rectangular plates are considered. The approach taken here is based on combining a bending plate finite element code with an optimizer. Results are presented for square and rectangular plates on a (three) discrete supports. A penalty function is used to ensure that supports are not collinear.

Abstract:
This paper describes the active control systems for reducing floor impulse noise. The control system is comprised of actively controlled modular thin plates, which wholly cover the surface of concrete slab structure in the ceiling, and in each of which the mechanical vibration is controlled independently with bimorph type piezoelectric actuators. An active control system of modular plate is presented, where five actuators and five sensors are applied to control low frequency modes of bending vibration in the plate. The control system is now under development, main investigation items of whch are designing of vibration characteristics of modular thin plate, the active control system appropriate to the characteristics and cost reduction of the actuators and sensors.

In ASME 2012 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Because it is inexpensive, an A-Frame ladder is routinely chosen to perform specific aerial work tasks. Presently, these death defying activities cannot be evaluated a priori using information furnished by ladder manufacturers relative to the resistance of their ladders or by trade organizations who cannot define the reasonably foreseeable load environment for various construction tasks. This paper proposes a methodology for rationally evaluating the safety of A-Frame ladders for specific overhead work tasks. A force-plate, normally used in gait testing, is used to safely support workers engaged in a specific work task. The force-plate output can be used to characterize the loading environment for a menu of important operations such as tuck pointing, painting, installation of lighting fixtures, speakers, and ceiling fans. Using statics, the loading menu may be accessed to simulate the forces applied to any ladder under any user profile. The overturning resistance of A-Frame ladders must be established by testing; static stability calculations are unconservative. When the loading environment associated with the installation of a typical ductwork detail was compared to the resistance of a special duty A-Frame ladder, the applied forces sometimes exceeded its lateral resistance. This is consistent with our field experience involving six death cases of sheet metal workers.

Abstract:
In this paper a new protective structure is designed to save human life, in the event of the structural collapse due to an earthquake, terrorist attack or other catastrophic events. The life-saver device discussed here is a moment resisting 3-D steel or composite frames that encapsulates a single or double bedstead, board in the kitchen, worktable in the office or other cases as appropriate. The frame consists of a number of beam-columns of angle cross-section bolted together by gusset plates and topped with a thin steel plate or a rectangular rebar mesh. The collapse of walls and ceiling on top of this structure will result in large plastic deformations in various sections of the frame whereby the energy of the falling debris is dissipated. Despite these large deflections, no harm is inflicted upon the people sleeping inside the frame. The physical behavior of this new life-saving device under real situation of structural collapse also is modeled in ANSYS LS-DYNA software. Combined nonlinear analysis of the frame is performed under dynamic loads developed; the stresses and deformations are carried out. Austenitic twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel which has a good combination of both strength and ductility also has been used for modeling and designing this structure and the results has been compared with ordinary steels. The design is verified for the emergency limit state considering the safety of people inside the protective structure.

Abstract:
The capillary plane terminal system is a novel HVAC system which can be used in office or residential buildings with dedicated outdoor air system. The capillary mats buried in the surface grout of the ceiling or the wall or the floor handle the interior sensible space cooling load with the handled dedicated air taking on the rest latent cooling load to keep the indoor parameters to be desired state. In this paper, with an example of a typical residential room where the capillary mats are installed on the ceiling, by using the method of CFD the indoor air flows under different modes in summer and winter are simulated and the temperature, velocity, relative humidity, predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percent dissatisfied (PPD) fields are presented and analyzed. Based on the simulation results, the indoor thermal environments are evaluated. And the optimal air flow mode is recommended correspondingly. These will be useful to the design and application of the capillary plane HVAC terminal system.

In ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2014-37317.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present work, computational modeling and simulations of isothermal plane (linear) air jet velocity profile for slot diffusers are performed. Plane air jets are formed by linear slots or rectangular openings with a large aspect ratio. Numerical simulations are performed using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS FLUENT. Three plane air jet flow simulations will be investigated such as free plane (linear) jets, attached jets, and air flow through a slot diffuser in a room setting. The purpose of simulating the free plane jet through a slot diffuser is to study the behavior of jet velocity profile that is not blocked by side walls or ceilings. The jet velocity profile is modified when obstructed by the walls and the air jet desires to attach to the surfaces along its path. For this reason, attached jet simulations through a slot diffuser will be conducted. The CFD study of plane air jet flows will eventually be extended to jet flows through a slot diffuser to a room to investigate the fluid flow behavior that enters a room under a ceiling. In addition, effects of two-equation turbulence models such as standard, renormalization group (RNG), and realizable k-ε on the CFD simulations will be investigated. Predicted velocity profiles and decays of free plane jet through a slot diffuser will be validated with a semi-empirical model [1]. Predicted velocity profiles of attached jet simulations will also be compared with a semi-empirical expression [2]. The slot diffuser air flow simulations will be compared with experimental data by the work of Chen and Srebric [3]. All simulations will be conducted at a specified inlet air velocity. The effects of grid resolution are also examined. It is established that the standard k-ε turbulence model best simulates attached and free jet flows. The standard k-ε turbulence model is applied to a room setting under isothermal conditions. The results are compared with non-isothermal experimental data [3]. It is shown that temperature which is a passive scalar has less influence on the flow pattern at a high air velocity than at a low air velocity in a room setting.

Before the 19th century, a buildings tectonics was largely unified. Categorical distinctions among so-called “systems’ – structure, enclosure, interior and exterior walls, and circulation were unknown. All of that changed with the advent of the steel frame – vertical circulation, environmental systems, clad surfaces, and curtain walls, newly liberated from any structural role, could be internalized, enclosed, encased, and hidden within other concealing floor plates, walls, and ceiling voids.
