In the first centuries of Christianity the Holy Mass was celebrated once a day only, also on Sundays. From V century it became necessary to celebrate more Masses in the same day because communities expanded and their members weren’t able to participate together in justone Holy Mass. Spjut, Annilyn Marie. ""How in This Cruel Age I Celebrated Freedom": Aesopian Subversion in Nikolai Ulyanov's Painting for the 1937 Pushkin Centenary." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6342.

Full text
Abstract:
Painted in 1937 as part of the centenary celebration of the death of Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Ulyanov's A. S. Pushkin and his Wife, N. N. Pushkina at the Imperial Ball has been lauded as the quintessential example of Soviet history painting. Modern scholars have followed the lead of Soviet critics, who praised the painting for its insight into the psychology of the brilliant poet repressed by the tyrannical tsarist regime. According to this interpretation, Soviet viewers in the 1930s were to ponder on the tragedy of Pushkin's demise and rejoice that the victory of Socialism had freed them from such repression. However, this thesis suggests that Ulyanov embedded a secondary, subversive message in his masterpiece. Through careful manipulation of Pushkin's complex semiotic significance, Socialist Realist dialectics, and the Aesopian method, Ulyanov crafted an image that could be celebrated for its adherence to Soviet ideology, while simultaneously suggesting to those who detected his clues that artistic repression had not ended with the revolution. In this subversive reading, Ulyanov's masterwork becomes a psychological self-portrait of an artist living under Stalinist oppression during the Great Terror.

Abstract:
We present two recent CFD techniques developed for numerical flux computation and grid generation. The numerical flux scheme, AUSM+, yields significant improvements over current popular schemes in terms of accuracy, simplicity of implementation, and generality to include other equations of conservation laws. The scheme has been shown to be free from inaccuracies/anomalies such as the “carbuncle phenomenon” associated with some celebrated upwind schemes. A new hybrid grid technique, termed DRAGON grid, has been developed to maximize the strengths of the Chimera grid and unstructured grid. Validation tests of these techniques and applications to rotating flows were conducted and their typical results are included in the paper.

Some of celebrated geometers whom are acknowledged as to be the pioneers of scientific revolution have worked on acoustics and modeling of vibration of structures. They made great contributions on both the physical understanding and the mathematical modeling of these phenomena. The historical stream of physical understanding of sound propagation, foundations of the mathematical background of vibration mechanics and the instruments that reinforced the conceived theory of acoustics led to the advanced concept of modern vibro-acoustic engineering. A historical investigation is made on the early engineering approaches on vibro-acoustic engineering problems to comprehend the evolution of acoustic engineering and its place in modern era.

Abstract:
Julius Stockhausen (1826–1906) is known as the first singer who performed Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin as a whole cycle in a public concert. A celebrated lieder singer, friend of Brahms, author of pedagogical works, and most prominent German singing teacher of his time, Stockhausen’s influence on lieder singing cannot be overestimated. Recently a manuscript with “Tempo indications for Die schöne Müllerin by Julius Stockhausen” has been found. The document, containing tempo suggestions for every single lied of the song cycle, was written down by the German singing professor Clara Klatte (1867–1945). Some of the suggested tempi are surprisingly fast. In this article the authenticity of the document is discussed under several aspects. The Klatte-Stockhausen document is published here for the first time.

Abstract:
Multi-instance learning (MIL) is a celebrated learning framework where each example is represented as a bag of instances. An example is negative if it has no positive instances, and vice versa if at least one positive instance is contained. During the past decades, various MIL algorithms have been proposed, among which the large margin based methods is a very popular class. Recently, the studies on margin theory disclose that the margin distribution is of more importance to generalization ability than the minimal margin. Inspired by this observation, we propose the multi-instance optimal margin distribution machine, which can identify the key instances via explicitly optimizing the margin distribution. We also extend a stochastic accelerated mirror prox method to solve the formulated minimax problem. Extensive experiments show the superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative study between two different approaches for dynamic systems based on Taylor series and based on a double-integrator, and their influence in path tracking control using model predictive controller (MPC) with the view to solve the path tracking problem of an autonomous off-road vehicle. A physical-mathematical model, including the celebrated tire model known as “Magic Formula”, is modified and linearized to control the steering of the vehicle considering different reference trajectory inputs. Simulation results are considered satisfactory, showing that the model linearized considering Taylor series presented better results compared to the double-integrator which indicates that the prediction of the plant output is driven close to the reference. Moreover, the results show that the implemented control strategies for path tracking are adequate for applications in off-road autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:
Celebrated as a mechanism for engaging ‘real’ projects much of the contemporary design-build literature foregrounds the action-learning embedded in the physical act of making a piece of architecture at full-scale. Participating students and faculty comments regularly highlight the direct encounter with the materials and method of construction as well as the collaborative, cross-disciplinary nature of community engagement. Brian Mackay-Lyons, founder of the Ghost Lab in Nova Scotia, argues that “Pragmatism is the best teacher” and “Technology is best learned by making” and he links design-build to, “The apprenticeship model of architectural education—its roots in the master-builder tradition of the Middle Ages.” (Mackay-Lyons 2008, p 135 and p138) However, the conventional fixation on the construction process and final products obscures the complex, often unappetizing, ‘behind the scenes’ logistics necessary to implement, and sustain, new pedagogies.

Full text
Abstract:
Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial celebrates the lives of the Lincoln family including the final resting place of Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln’s childhood in Indiana was a formative time in the life our 16th president. When the Lincoln family arrived in Indiana, the property was covered in the oak-hickory forest type. They cleared land to create their homestead and farm. Later, designers of the memorial felt that it was important to restore woodlands to the site. The woodlands would help visitors visualize the challenges the Lincoln family faced in establishing and maintaining their homestead. Some stands of woodland may have remained, but significant restoration efforts included extensive tree planting. The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network began monitoring the woodland in 2011 with repeat visits every four years. These monitoring efforts provide a window into the composition and structure of the wood-lands. We measure both overstory trees and the ground flora within four permanently located plots. At these permanent plots, we record each species, foliar cover estimates of ground flora, diameter at breast height of midstory and overstory trees, and tree regeneration frequency (tree seedlings and saplings). The forest species composition was relatively consistent over the three monitoring events. Climatic conditions measured by the Palmer Drought Severity Index indicated mild to wet conditions over the monitoring record. Canopy closure continued to indicate a forest structure with a closed canopy. Large trees (>45 cm DBH) comprised the greatest amount of tree basal area. Sugar maple was observed to have the greatest basal area and density of the 23 tree species observed. The oaks characteristic of the early woodlands were present, but less dominant. Although one hickory species was present, it was in very low abundance. Of the 17 tree species recorded in the regeneration layer, three species were most abundant through time: sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red bud (Cercis canadensis), and ash (Fraxinus sp.). Ash recruitment seemed to increase over prior years and maple saplings transitioned to larger size classes. Ground flora diversity was similar through time, but alpha and gamma diversity were slightly greater in 2019. Percent cover by plant guild varied through time with native woody plants and forbs having the greatest abundance. Nonnative plants were also an important part of the ground flora composition. Common periwinkle (Vinca minor) and Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) continued to be the most abundant nonnative species, but these two species were less abundant in 2019 than 2011. Unvegetated ground cover was high (mean = 95%) and increased by 17% since 2011. Bare ground increased from less than 1% in 2011 to 9% in 2019, but other ground cover elements were similar to prior years. In 2019, we quantified observer error by double sampling two plots within three of the monitoring sites. We found total pseudoturnover to be about 29% (i.e., 29% of the species records differed between observers due to observer error). This 29% pseudoturnover rate was almost 50% greater than our goal of 20% pseudoturnover. The majority of the error was attributed to observers overlooking species. Plot frame relocation error likely contributed as well but we were unable to separate it from overlooking error with our design.
