Abstract:
Chapter 3 investigates the activities of the artificers Anna Morandi (1714–1774) and Giovanni Manzolini (1701–1755) by tracing the trajectory of their collection of anatomical waxworks. In the mid-1740s, Giovanni Manzolini worked as an assistant to Lelli in the realization of the anatomy room sponsored by Benedict XIV. After the two had a falling out, Manzolini left Lelli’s workshop and started modelling with Anna Morandi, whom he had married in 1740. Anna and Giovanni created their own collection of anatomical waxworks and displayed it within their house. This chapter draws attention to their artisanal home as a venue of making and knowing where family life intersected with anatomical practice. Likewise, it examines the domestic setting as a site where the world of maternity and the largely female domains of sewing and needlework could naturalize women’s presence in the anatomical world and support their fashioning as anatomical celebrities.

Longoria, Richard T. Celebrities in American Elections. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666987461.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a case study approach, Celebrities in American Elections contends that celebrities have the talent, fame, and resources to succeed in electoral politics. These factors account for the electoral victories of Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Fred Grandy, Sonny Bono, Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Franken, and Donald Trump. However, the author argues that these items are insufficient without a favorable political environment; as many celebrities have lost elections as have won them. They lose because their persona does not match the politics of their time, or they represent the minority party in a one party dominated district or state, or they advocate for unpopular policies. Among those that won, nearly half were elected by a plurality – not a majority – of voters. This does not suggest overwhelming public support for celebrity candidates despite their many advantages. With a few exceptions, celebrities that won tended to also win the fundraising battle, while celebrities that lost tended to raise less than their opponent – the normal laws of politics still apply. The celebrity factor, while helpful, does not fully explain why celebrities win or lose elections.

Abstract:
Abstract Resistance and Support: Contact Improvisation @ 50 is a ground-breaking anthology of twenty original writings that elucidate vitally important somatic and political perspectives on Contact Improvisation (CI), a form of partner dancing initiated in the United States in 1972 which has now spread into a vibrant global community. It is edited and includes an introduction by veteran CI practitioner and dance studies scholar Ann Cooper Albright, professor of dance at Oberlin College. For much of its existence in the twentieth century, CI prided itself on its “democratic and egalitarian” roots. Jams were open to all, women learned to lift men, and dancing roles were not conventionally gendered. These operating assumptions meant that questions of social power were often ignored in CI spaces. Resistance and Support critically engages issues of inclusion and access through insightful essays by people whose experiences are shaped by this extraordinary form of kinesthetic communication. The chapters trace the stories of CI in China, Taiwan, India, Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Canada, and Europe. Some chapters discuss the somatic training that provides a movement basis for improvisational exchanges between dancers. Other essays foreground feminist and queer perspectives on the form. Several pieces elaborate on the healing, spiritual, or therapeutic aspects of CI, while others explore mixed-ability approaches. Like Critical Mass: CI @ 50, the international conference honoring CI’s 50th anniversary from which these writings emerged, these essays both celebrate the expansive possibilities and critique some of the exclusionary conventions of this ever-evolving form of communal dance.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the discussion over the influence of new media and communications technologies on the spread of (particularly charismaticized) Protestantism in Africa. It links the contemporary debate to the debate about the origins of Protestantism in the sixteenth-century communications revolution sparked by the invention of the printing press. Building on the work of scholars such as Lamin Sanneh, the chapter addresses issues of translation, the nature of modern media technologies and their semiotic impact on mediated messages; the construction of the public square and the ‘re-publicization of religion’. Particular attention is given to the rise of charismatic media empires, involving integrated print, digital, and satellite/television media, often in support of pentecostal/charismatic prosperity-preaching megachurches and their celebrity pastors.

Historian Carter G. Woodson’s employment of the black press and modern public-relations techniques to preserve and popularize black history during the first half of the 20th century is rediscovered and examined in this study. This rarely explored side of Woodson, often called “The Father of Black History,” resurrects the lost image of a leading cultural icon who used his celebrity in multiple roles as an opinion journalist, newsmaker, and CEO/publicist of black history to bring veneration to a subject whose past was clouded by misinformation and contempt. During his era, 1915-1950, Woodson cultivated and won crucial press support for his Black History Movement, while merging his interests and the interests of the black newspapers. His cause became their cause.

Abstract:
In the 1960s, Snow’s cultural celebrity led to many trips to the United States and the Soviet Union. Much in demand as a lecturer on science and the humanities, Snow was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Wesleyan University. Resentful of her subordinated status as ‘Lady Snow’, Pamela nevertheless accompanied him on his travels. In the Soviet Union they were treated as honoured guests and enjoyed many visits to the dachas of leading Russian writers and intellectuals. Their support of Russian writers, however, led to attacks upon them as fellow-travellers. Pamela based her comic novel about American academic life on her time at Wesleyan University (Night and Silence, Who is Here?), and during the 1960s she became a regular and vibrant contributor to various BBC cultural programmes, primarily with the remit of reporting on current fiction.

Abstract:
No novel since Uncle Tom’s Cabin achieved the celebrity and cultural impact of To Kill a Mockingbird in regards to race in America. The chapter explores Lee’s youthful experiments in writing and gender-bending, and discusses how her first unpublished novel, Go Set a Watchman, approached themes both repressed and continued in Mockingbird. Using ideas from Queer Theory, the chapter argues that Lee’s racial liberalism is less comforting when read through the lens of her gender-bending children and closeted narrator, showing how the plots about Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are finally brought together. Analysis of Lee’s college writings expose her early interest in satirizing Southern racial politics, while biographical information from those years supports hypotheses about her queering of sexual norms.

Abstract Borderlines in Private Law offers a collection of essays written by some of the UK’s leading academic lawyers regarding the borderlines and intersections of private law. It discusses key concepts and the interplay of contract, tort, unjust enrichment, property, and equity. Some arguments indicate distinct categories and support the careful maintenance of borders, while others celebrate cross-border exchanges. Borderlines in Private Law also includes responses from senior members of the UK judiciary that offer their thoughts on the structure, order, and understanding of private law in the context of real-world disputes. It highlights that mapmaking analogies are a long-standing hallmark of private law scholarship.

Halper, Donna L. Icons of Talk. www.greenwood.com, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400668036.

Full text
Abstract:
Americans love talk shows. In a typical week, more than 13 million Americans listen to Rush Limbaugh, whose syndicated radio show is carried by about 600 stations. On television, Oprah Winfrey's syndicated talk show is seen by an estimated 30 million viewers each week. Talk show hosts like Winfrey and Limbaugh have become iconic figures, frequently quoted and capable of inspiring intense opinions. What they say on the air is discussed around the water cooler at work, or commented about on blogs and fan web sites. Talk show hosts have helped to make or break political candidates, and their larger-than-life personalities have earned them millions of fans (as well as more than a few enemies). Icons of Talk highlights the most groundbreaking exemplars of the talk show genre, a genre that has had a profound influence on American life for over 70 years. Among the featured: • Joe Pyne • Jerry Williams • Herb Jepko • Randi Rhodes • Rush Limbaugh • Larry King • Dr. Laura Schlesinger • Steve Allen • Jerry Springer • Howard Stern. • Oprah Winfrey • Don Francisco • Cristina Saralegui • Tavis Smiley • James Dobson • Don Imus Going behind the scenes, this volume showcases the techniques hosts used to motivate (and sometimes aggravate) audiences, and examines the talk show in all of its various formats, including sports-talk, religious-talk, political-talk, and celebrity-talk. Each entry places the talk format and its hosts into historical context, addressing such questions as: What was going on in society when these talkers were on the air? How did each of them affect or change society? What were the issues they liked to talk about and what reaction did they get from listeners and from critics? How were talk hosts able to persuade people to vote for particular candidates or support certain policies? Which hosts were considered controversial and why? Complete with photographs, a timeline, and a resource guide of sources and organizations, this volume is ideal for students of journalism and media studies.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uses the specific example of Keanu Reeves in order to trace how the specter of homosexuality both responds to and redirects a reading of Reeves as multiracial. The celebrity culture surrounding Reeves, particularly the flurry of news activity that accompanied his supposed marriage to David Geffen in the mid-1990s, coincided with the passage of the Clinton Administration's “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy and popular media discussions about gay visibility. Reeves' star persona demonstrates how, following the push for multicultural inclusion and representation in the 1980s and 1990s, queer and anti-queer coming out rhetoric reframed ethical concerns about racial passing. Supported by an analysis of Reeves' movie reviews and his publicity photos during this decade, the chapter argues that critics' and fans' repeated characterization of Reeves as a bad actor reflects beliefs about racial authenticity and concerns about both racial and sexual passing.

Elkins, Nathan T. Nerva, the Senate and People of Rome, and Italy. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190648039.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The most intensively studied images on Nerva’s coins are his bronze coins that denote specific aspects of the emperor’s policy. These speak directly to Nerva’s domestic agenda and his relationship with the people of Rome, the Senate, and the Italian citizenry. For example, coins celebrate imperial distribution of grain to the urban plebs, the foresight of the Senate, and the remission of obligations of Italian communities to support the imperial courier. Nerva’s restoration coins celebrating the Deified Augustus echo a theme in Martial’s epigrams, whereby Nerva is presented as Augustus restored to the earth. Nonetheless, such coins are, generally speaking, very rare and this suggests that they did not circulate widely across the Roman Empire. Distribution of coin finds suggest that these coins were targeted primarily at an audience in Rome and Italy.

Abstract:
At its best, congregational life operates as a church family in which members celebrate with those who are joyous and weep with those who are suffering. They offer assistance, guidance, and friendship. They worship together and seek to live their lives according to the principles that they share. At its worst, congregational life operates as a dysfunctional family in which controlling, abusive behavior abounds, support is non-existent, jealousy and rivalry flourish, and isolation and loneliness prevail. Harnessing data from clergy, members of congregations, and those impacted directly by domestic violence, this chapter considers both the challenges for congregations related to abuse and the opportunities that ministry in this area offers. The chapter discusses practical ways that congregations can make a difference in the lives of families dealing with violence at home.

Valle, Mary. Depeche Mode's 101. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781501390357.

Full text
Abstract:
Depeche Mode’s 101 is, at first glance, a curious thing: a live double-album by a synth band. A recording of its “Concert for the Masses,” 101 marks the moment when doomy, cultish, electronic Depeche Mode, despite low American album sales and a lack of critical acclaim, declared they had arrived and ascended to the rare air of stadium rock. On June 18, 1988, 65,000 screaming, singing Southern Californians flocked to Pasadena’s Rose Bowl to celebrate DM’s coronation. The concert also revealed the power of Southern California radio station and event host KROQ, which had turned Los Angeles into DM’s American stronghold through years of fervent airplay. KROQ’s innovative format, which brought “new music” to its avid listeners, soon spread across the country, leading to the explosion of alternative rock in the 1990s. Eight years after its founding in Basildon, Essex, Depeche Mode, rooted in 1970s Krautrock, combined old-fashioned touring, well-crafted songs, and the steadfast support of KROQ to dominate Southern California, the United States, and then the world, kicking open the doors for the likes of Nirvana in the process. 101 is the hidden-in-plain-sight hinge of modern music history.

Abstract:
Suicide in the forms of martyrdom, self-sacrifice, and self-immolation is mired in controversies regarding religious roots, nomenclature, motives, and valor. Although the admiration ebbs and flows, at least some idealization of such elective deaths is discernible in every religious tradition treated in this volume. Traditional support ranges from tales of ascetic heroes who conquer personal passions to save others by dying, to tales of righteous warriors who suffer and die valiantly while challenging the status quo. While the lionization of elective death is a persistent theme in world religions, just as persistent are disputes about the core notions that justify it, such as altruism, heroism, and religion itself. This volume offers critical analyses by renowned scholars with the literary and historical tools to tackle the contested issue of religiously sanctioned suicide. Three chapters treat contemporary phenomena with disputed classical roots (chapters on Salafist Jihadists, on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam, and on the Branch Davidians and Heavens' Gate), while eleven focus on classical religious literatures which variously celebrate and disparage figures who invite self-harm to the point of corporeal death (chapters on Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Sikh, Tamil, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Daoist traditions, as well as on their diverse branches and special expressions). Overall, the volume offers astute scholarly insights which counter the axiom that religious traditions simply and always embrace life at any cost.

Abstract:
Why do people participate in controversial symbolic events that drive wedges between groups and occasionally spark violence? This book examines this question through an in-depth case study of Northern Ireland. Protestant organizations perform over 2,500 parades across Northern Ireland each year. Protestants tend to see the parades as festive occasions that celebrate Protestant history and culture. Catholics, however, tend to see them as hateful, intimidating, and triumphalist. As a result, parades have been a major source of conflict in the years since the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. This book examines why, given the often negative consequences, people choose to participate in these parades. Drawing on theories from the study of contentious politics and the study of ritual, the book argues that paraders are more interested in the benefits intrinsic to participation in a communal ritual than the external consequences of their action. The book presents analysis of original quantitative and qualitative data to support this argument and to test it against prominent alternative explanations. Interview, survey, and ethnographic data are also used to explore issues central to parade participation, including identity expression, commemoration, tradition, the pleasures of participation, and communicating a message to outside audiences. The book additionally examines a paradox at the center of parading: while most observers see parades as political events, the participants do not. Altogether, the book offers a new perspective on politics and culture in the aftermath of ethnic violence.

Osseo-Asare, Fran. Food Culture in Sub-Saharan Africa. Greenwood Press, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400652486.

Full text
Abstract:
East African, notably, Ethiopian, cuisine is perhaps the most well-known in the States. This volume illuminates West, southern, and Central African cuisine as well to give students and other readers a solid understanding of how the diverse African peoples grow, cook, and eat food and how they celebrate special occasions and ceremonies with special foods. Readers will also learn about African history, religions, and ways of life plus how African and American foodways are related. For example, cooking techniques such as deep frying and ingredients such as peanuts, chili peppers, okra, watermelon, and even cola were introduced to the United States by sub-Sahara Africans who were brought as slaves. Africa is often presented as a monolith, but this volume treats each region in turn with representative groups and foodways presented in manageable fashion, with a truer picture able to emerge. It is noted that the boundaries of many countries are imposed, so that food culture is more fluid in a region. Commonalities are also presented in the basic format of a meal, with a starch with a sauce or stew and vegetables and perhaps some protein, typically cooked over a fire in a pot supported by three stones. Representative recipes, a timeline, glossary, and evocative photos complete the narrative.
