Tumorigenesis results from the accumulation of genetic events which give rise to inappropriate behaviour of cells. Mutations which lead to cancer progression are generally classified in two major categories, that of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. The latter have been more difficult to identify due to their recessive nature. The application of somatic cell fusion and microcell fusion technologies presents a means to identify genes inactivated in tumor cells.
