Kleinmann, Johannes. "Polystylistic Features of Schnittke's Cello Sonata (1978)." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc30478/.

Full text
Abstract:
Polystylism in Alfred Schnittke's music has been considered by scholars as a central aspect of his music. Although there are many published analyses of his choral music, symphonies, concerti and violin sonatas, there is no known published research for Schnittke's first cello sonata. Alfred Schnittke grew up in a culturally diverse environment influenced by many different composers and compositional styles under the restrictions of a communist Russian government. These aspects influenced the development of Schnittke's polystylism, characteristically represented by his Cello Sonata (1978). The detailed musical analysis of this sonata in this study serves the purpose to reveal Schnittke's polystylistic tendencies and his use of cyclic elements. These polystylistic elements in the sonata illustrate how Schnittke de-familiarizes listeners from rules commonly accepted as unavoidable and re-familiarizes listeners with the expressive qualities of tonal, twelve-tone and atonal music. Although Schnittke introduces polystylistic materials in de-familiarized contexts in this sonata, this study finds that Schnittke particularly re-familiarizes the audience's musical and stylistic perception through the reappearance of sections, textures and motifs. Abrupt polystylistic conflicts contrast with the repetition of previous materials, thereby forming a combination of traditional styles with features of discontinuity in 20th century music.

Abstract:
The saxophone has a rich tradition of performing transcriptions. In recent years, saxophonists have begun exploring the performance of transcriptions that would have previously been believed to be outside of the capabilities of the saxophone. In general, this new wave of transcriptions has been drawn from the repertoire of string instruments. Through the arrangement of Claude Debussy's Cello Sonata of 1915, this document provides a step-by-step explanation of how saxophonists can effectively transcribe string music for the saxophone.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>音樂學系研究所<br>95<br>Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the most important Russian composers of the Soviet period. Being a prolific composer, he had created a great many orchestra music and opera, as well as a substantial quantity of popular film music under the pressure of the Soviet regime. Although Shostakovich was judged crucially in one of his works in opera by Pravda in 1936, his passion still remained firm he for composition. It was only until his piano quintet finished in1940 that received the national awards, and became honored and well-known both domestically and internationally. In terms of chamber works, Shostakovich had composed one sonata each for violin, viola and cello and fifteen string quartets. His“Cello Sonata in D Minor, op. 40” finished in 1934. This work is subject to traditional musical form with unconventional tonality. For example, Shostakovich’s use of unique harmonics and resonances, blended with lyrical melody and folk style, is so penetrative that it has become one of the most celebrated cello master pieces in Russia. This lecture-recital document includes three major discourses. The first and the second parts summarize the introduction of the background of modern Russia and the personal review of Shostakovich. The third section gives an analysis on the creation background and techniques of the “Cello Sonata in D Minor, op. 40”. This document will try to discuss the techniques and possible interpretations by looking into the recording by Shostakovich. Hopefully, the document can shed light onto the composer’s originality.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>音樂學系研究所<br>96<br>During the prosperous period of romanticism and phenomenon of freedom, Brahms confined himself as a composer of classicism. He integrated the classical structure and the contemporary music language into his works. Brahms created his own style by using the powerful harmony and heavy texture with the form of baroque and classical music. The particular style was highly praised by the complicated rhythm pattern and the development of motive and theme. He left many kinds of works, including chamber music, piano pieces, and symphonies, etc., as a greatly significant legacy for the future generations. Cello Sonata in E Minor was one of Brahms’ most important chamber works created in his middle period of life. In this piece, there was a specific arrangement for cello in order to emphasize on the thick and solid lower timbre of this kind of instrument. His mature style developed later on from the patterns of rhythms and motives. Although this sonata was not composed in the golden period of his life, it still became one of the most important masterpieces in today’s history. This essay can be divided into two parts. The first part is focusing on the Brahms’ background, works sorted, style, and the significant effective position in the music history. The second part uses the music structure, harmony disposition, and motive development to analyze Cello Sonata in E Minor, and goes more in depth over the rhythms and motives of Brahms’ common use in the piece. Finally, it also concentrates on the dynamics, terminology, and the balance between the different pitch compasses in order to meet the hope of not only exactly following the composer’s creative thoughts but also strongly expressing the personal characters of performers.

"Negotiation of Claude Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano." Doctoral diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.38758.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: The Sonata for Cello and Piano (1915) was one of the last three sonatas written by Claude Debussy (1862–1918). When Debussy composed the sonata, France was involved in World War I and Debussy was influenced by political dogmas that sought to advance nationalism as well as the use of French traditions in musical compositions. By discussing the political impact of World War I on French music, this paper will place the Sonata in a context that strengthens the understanding of the work. Debussy, who participated in the political project of seeking out tradition as the protector of French culture, also presents his understanding of what French tradition is in this sonata. An analytical description of the structure, thematic materials, harmonies and intervallic relationships of the Sonata reveals Debussy’s approach of combining the elements that he observed from his French predecessors, as well as his own innovations in the work as he negotiated musical world that was controlled by political dogma<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom that included a pronounced lyricism, expressive breadth, structural ingenuity, and a tonal palette of rich, distinctive orchestral colors. The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff''s compositional output. He made a point of using his own skills as a performer to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Even in his earliest works he revealed a sure grasp of idiomatic piano writing and a striking gift for melody.

The first chapter is a preface, which mainly states the motivation, methodology and scope of the research. The second chapter is an introduction to Debussy's compositional style. The third chapter discusses the traditional and innovatory characteristics in Debussy's Cello Sonata. The fourth chapter shows the form and motive analysis in Debussy's Cello Sonata. The fifth chapter includes the interpretation and performing technique of Debussy's Cello Sonata. The final chapter is a conclusion. The purpose of this study is to provide for the advanced cellist who desires to present this sonata more profoundly through the understanding of background, performing technique and various characteristics in Debussy's Cello Sonata.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺中教育大學<br>音樂學系碩士班<br>102<br>César Franck (1822-1890), was an early 19th to 20th century French composer. Although he did not have widespread public attention, in the subsequent creation of the French Association of Composers and other innovations, his experience accumulated, gradually mastering and showing his creative style of compositional techniques. His works greatly helped the music industry to flourish. This paper focuses on the analysis of Franck’s writing style in his later years to master the piece "Violin Sonata in A Major". He dedicated it to violinist Eugéne Ysayé(1858-1931), as a wedding gift. The song was also adapted for cello. "Cello Sonata in A Major" did not receive much attention when it was first written, but with Ysayé actively playing and promoting the piece, the public slowly discovered the beauty of the sonata in its mood and musical form of implication. The differences between “Violin Sonata in A Major” and “Cello Sonata in A Major” did not result in favoritism over either piece by the public. In this article, the author will further explain the difficulties encountered during “Cello Sonata in A Major”, and try to provide ways to solve the problems while practicing this piece. I hope that after the reader has finished reading this, it will help shorten learning process of the piece while accomplishing the composer's intention in playing the piece.

"Commissioned Works for Cello by Composers Christian Asplund and Joseph Hallman Through Analytical Studies." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.27557.

Abstract:
abstract: The commissioning and recording of music from living composers is a very important tradition in the art of music. The ability to work with living composers gives the performer insight into the music that is far beyond reading the notes on the page. For my research paper, I commissioned two new works for the cello by the composers Joseph Hallman and Christian Asplund, in an effort to continue adding great pieces to the cello repertoire. This paper documents my experiences in finding and working with selected composers. It includes detailed descriptions of the pieces with practice and performance suggestions as well as recordings of the pieces. Commissioning new works often creates many first-hand artistic decisions for the performer as well as many new technical difficulties on the instrument. The two pieces commissioned offer insight into two different instrumentations: the sonata for cello and piano, and a solo cello suite. In this paper I describe various important aspects of these compositions and point out ways to make informed artistic decisions when approaching form, harmony, motive, and extended techniques on the cello. Providing this information on commissioning and collaborating with living composers will help continue this tradition into the future for classical music.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Asplund, C.
