Abstract:
This book not only discusses cellular automata (CA) as accouterment for simulation, but also the actual building of devices within cellular automata. CA are widely used tools for simulation in physics, ecology, mathematics, and other fields. But they are also digital "toy universes" worthy of study in their own right, with their own laws of physics and behavior. In studying CA for their own sake, we must look at constructive methods, that is the practice of actually building devices in a given CA that store and process in formation, replicate, and propagate themselves, and interact with other devices in complex ways. By building such machines, we learn what the CA's dynamics are capable of, and build an intuition about how to "engineer" the machine we want. We can also address fundamental questions, such as whether universal computation or even "living" things that reproduce and evolve can exist in the CA's digital world, and perhaps, how these things came to be in out own universe.

Abstract:
Device-to-Device (D2D) Communication and Non Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) have become topics of interest for researchers. They are widely recognized as techniques of the next generation cellular wireless networks. D2D technique offers uninterrupted communication among proximate mobile users without transferring data to the base station. This can provide high data rates and power control mechanisms. If D2D direct link distance is more, or the quality of channel is poor then the direct D2D communication gives larger propagation losses. This type of scenarios use relay assisted D2D communication, for improving the transmission capacity and coverage. Where as NOMA ) is one of the many technologies that promise greater capacity gain and spectral efficiency than the present state of the art, and is a candidate technology for 5G cellular networks In this book, fundamentals, state of the art, applications and research challenges of D2D and NOMA have been discussed in simple language

Abstract:
Vision is a sensory modality of primary importance to many animal species. The efficient implementation of visual perception is also one of the main challenges in the design of intelligent robotic systems. This chapter reviews the principles of operation and key features of the early stages of biological vision systems. Following the observation that visual information processing starts in the eye, it reviews several approaches to constructing biomimetic artificial vision systems. It presents devices inspired by the morphology of the insects’ compound eyes, and devices tightly integrating image sensing and processing circuitry. These include silicon integrated circuits mimicking the operation of vertebrate retinas, and bio-inspired systems oriented towards machine vision applications, such as dynamic vision sensors and vision chips with pixel-parallel cellular processor arrays. It elucidates the advantages of the near-sensor processing of the visual information, and potential for future developments of neuromorphic vision sensors.

Ems, Lindsay. Virtually Amish. The MIT Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/11792.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
How the Amish have adopted certain digital tools in ways that allow them to work and live according to their own value system. The Amish are famous for their disconnection from the modern world and all its devices. But, as Lindsay Ems shows in Virtually Amish, Old Order Amish today are selectively engaging with digital technology. The Amish need digital tools to participate in the economy—websites for ecommerce, for example, and cell phones for communication on the road—but they have developed strategies for making limited use of these tools while still living and working according to the values of their community. The way they do this, Ems suggests, holds lessons for all of us about resisting the negative forces of what has been called “high-tech capitalism.” Ems shows how the Amish do not allow technology to drive their behavior; instead, they actively configure their sociotechnical world to align with their values and protect their community's autonomy. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted in two Old Order Amish settlements in Indiana, Ems explores explicit rules and implicit norms as innovations for resisting negative impacts of digital technology. She describes the ingenious contraptions the Amish devise—including “the black-box phone,” a landline phone attached to a device that connects to a cellular network when plugged into a car's cigarette lighter—and considers the value of human-centered approaches to communication. Non-Amish technology users would do well to take note of Amish methods of adopting digital technologies in ways that empower people and acknowledge their shared humanity. The open access edition of this book was made possible by generous funding from Arcadia – a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.
