Abstract:

This article explores the way in which Blaise Cendrars portrayed three figures of otherness in his writings: the Jew, the German and the non-European Other. In light of Cendrars's ideological orientation and his evolving position in the French literary field, this piece proposes an analysis of his fluid and dynamic representations of the Other. Cendrars's poetic or narrative 'I' is at times inseparable from the Other he portrays, and at other times rejects the Other outright. Hence, the figure of the Wandering Jew, with which Cendrars's poetic 'I' often identifies, alternates with an association of Judaism with pathological sexuality. The German enemy is first represented as the ultimate Other, and then as a reflection of the narrative 'I' when Cendrars calls upon his experiences of World War I. Finally, Cendrars depicts the Non-European Other, both demonized and idealized, as the dark side of the European Self, particularly in his reportage of the 1930s.

Abstract:

Cultural studies has tended to neglect poetic texts, but poetry is in fact well suited to provoke classroom debates concerning the cultural construction of the aesthetic object, as Blaise Cendrars's Dix-neuf poèmes élastiques (Nineteen Elastic Poems) confirms. Bakhtin's notion of the heteroglossic helps to demonstrate that Cendrars's poems are also “rejoinders” in a dialogue with their institutional other: advertising. But Cendrars does not merely claim advertising as poetic material; he identifies poetry as a form of advertisement. Cendrars suggests that the symbolic capital of poetry cannot exist unless the poem brings attention to itself by means of a practice that it posits, paradoxically, as its other. However, the fact that poetry is constructed by advertising its difference does not make poetry equivalent to advertising. Cultural studies reveals the institutional construction of poetry, but only close textual analysis can highlight the semiotic distinctions between poetry and advertising that institutional boundaries engender.

Neste artigo oferecemos uma diferente visão sobre a relação do poeta Blaise Cendrars junto aos modernistas brasileiros, visto pela crítica brasileira (Amaral, 1997; Eulálio, 2001; Martins, 1992) como o responsável direto pela virada nacionalista em nosso Modernismo, e como guia dos brasileiros no “descobrimento” de sua própria nação. Cendrars é aqui apresentado como um terceiro elemento do movimento Pau Brasil − formado por Tarsila do Amaral e Oswald de Andrade, os três amparados pela sombra poderosa de Paulo Prado. Propomos reverter a corrente ideia de uma influência unilateral, na qual os brasileiros são situados como devedores do mestre europeu, para uma relação de influências recíprocas, sugerindo um trabalho em conjunto, concretizado em três obras: os livros de poemas Feuilles de route, de Blaise Cendrars, de 1924; Poesia Pau Brasil, de Oswald de Andrade, de 1925; e a exposição de Tarsila do Amaral realizada na Galerie Percier, em Paris, em 1926.

Abstract:

Les années 1920 constituent une période charnière dans le parcours de Blaise Cendrars: ayant entamé sa carrière au sein des avant-gardes parisiennes, il commence à s'éloigner de ces milieux après la Grande Guerre. Le centre de gravité de son écriture se déplace alors de la poésie au roman. Au même moment, il joue un rôle de conseiller ou de directeur de collection auprès de deux maisons d'édition qui publient ses œuvres: La Sirène et Le Sans Pareil. Devenant un « entrepreneur » éditorial, il conçoit, pour son propre travail littéraire, une multitude de titres, dont une grande partie ne sera jamais réalisée. Cendrars utilise ces projets « virtuels » dans la construction de la dimension mythologique de son œuvre, marquée par le thème du mouvement perpétuel. Cela correspond aux techniques littéraires du plagiat, de la réécriture et de l'intertextualité, employées par Cendrars afin de façonner ses œuvres en tant que textes « imaginaires ».

Abstract:

Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as relações estéticas entre a obra de Mário de Andrade e do vanguardista Blaise Cendrars. Sabe-se que a primeira fase do Modernismo brasileiro foi marcada pela articulação com as correntes das Vanguardas Europeias. Em tal contexto, avaliaremos a hipótese de que Blaise Cendrars tenha sido um dos elos de ligação entre as tendências estrangeiras e o projeto artístico nacional modernista. Para a análise comparada das relações estéticas entre o poeta brasileiro e o vanguardista, foram escolhidos o “Noturno de Belo Horizonte” (1924), poema de Clã do Jabuti, as “Crônicas de Malazarte VIII” (1924) e La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France (1913), longo livro verbo-visual de Cendrars, pois é possível perceber um profundo diálogo entre os textos, pautados em experiências de viagem de trem. Como embasamento teórico, serão consideradas as teorias e críticas da poesia em geral, assim como estudos sobre a estética vanguardista e modernista.

Abstract A unique association joins Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars and Louis Ferdinand Céline. Besides being great exponents of French literature, they were all neurologically wounded during the First World War. Apollinaire had a traumatic brain injury, Cendrars developed phantom limb neuropathic pain and Céline presented radial nerve paralysis. There is quite an evidence that supports that their artistic output was also influenced by acquired neurological conditions during the war. The examples of these three French authors reveal the surprising intimacy Neurology can share with art and history.

Abstract:

Blaise Cendrars foi um dos homens mais cosmopolitas de seu tempo, pois viajou pelo mundo desde a infância e possuiu uma identidade nacional fragmentada. Em sua vida itinerante, o escritor presenciou fatos que transformaram o início do século XX, como as revoluções tecnológicas, que ofereceram à sociedade variadas máquinas que facilitariam a vida da população. Nesse contexto, a poesia de Cendrars constituiu-se tanto por uma busca do autor por si mesmo, por seu ser permeado pela pluralidade cultural de sua formação, quanto pela predileção da modernidade vivida pelo seu tempo. A figura de Blaise Cendrars, sua poesia moderna e a representação do espírito vanguardista se misturam com os relatos do escritor de suas experiências pelo mundo. Por meio de um embasamento teórico a partir de teorias e críticas da poesia em geral, assim como estudos sobre a poesia de vanguarda no início do século XX, este trabalho apresentará como a obra do escritor almeja a expressão do mundo moderno, das novas concepções poéticas e das suas próprias experiências.

Résumé Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Blaise Cendrars se livre à une étonnante réécriture de son expérience des tranchées de 1914. Du témoignage originel, J’ai tué (1918), à sa version revue et corrigée, La Main coupée (1946), il opère un continuel jeu de collage, de citation, de transposition, tant interne qu’externe, oscillant constamment entre mode narratif et mode descriptif, prose et poésie, notations triviales et envolées lyriques. Il s’impose ainsi définitivement comme un maître de l’hétérogène, déjouant sans cesse l’attente du lecteur ; mais dans le même temps, il laisse à ce dernier l’impression d’une variation en mineur, prélude à l’automythographie des dernières années.

En 1921 et 1922, Blaise Cendrars et Yvan Goll publient chacun une anthologie, qui intègre des récits ou des chants d’origine africaine transcrits et traduits en français : l’Anthologie nègre et Les Cinq Continents. Anthologie mondiale de poésie contemporaine. Puisant dans des corpus des recueils ethnologiques, leur projet a toutefois une visée littéraire. Cette chronologie rapprochée invite à lire les deux volumes en dialogue et à voir dans cet intérêt littéraire de la part des avant-gardes francophones pour des textes africains un appel à une littérature mondiale et un événement inaugural pour la réception de la littérature africaine en France, à l’origine d’un « modèle nègre ». Cet article décrira d’abord le succès de la forme anthologique parmi les avant-gardes historiques, avant de porter son attention sur les anthologies publiées par Yvan Goll et Blaise Cendrars, afin d’en déplier les enjeux spécifiques.

Lors de leur première rencontre à Paris en 1923, Blaise Cendrarsoffre à Tarsila do Amaral une petite peinture à l’huile sur carton, intitulée depuis Torre Eiffel, une des rares peintures que Cendrars ait peintes, dix ans auparavant, avec les couleurs de son ami Robert Delaunay. Vingt-deux ans après son dernier séjour au Brésil, Cendrars va dédier à Tarsila le dernier récitde ses mémoires, qui a pour décor la fazenda du “Morro Azul” d’un certain Oswaldo Padroso, l’inventeur d’une nouvelle constellation, la “Tour Eiffel Sidérale”, qui va donner son nom au récit. Dans l’ambivalence des contrastes simultanés, orangés de la passion et bleus de l’introspection vont se mêler une vie durant, tout comme aventure et écriture, la braise couvant sous la cendre,tel que le poète nous le chante pour toujours.

Abstract:

A viagem de Blaise Cendrars ao Brasil, em 1924, marcou a história das relações entre a estética de Vanguarda, representada pelo poeta franco-suíço, e a Modernista, sobretudo, a de Oswald e de Tarsila. Tal evento inspira Feuilles de Route (1924), de Cendrars, Pau-Brasil (1925), de Oswald e em várias telas de Tarsila. Nesse contexto, os artistas recolhem elementos para suas obras à medida que estudavam mais a fundo as terras brasileiras em uma viagem que fizeram juntos pelo país. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é examinar as relações estéticas entre as obras dos três artistas. A análise se dará por meio de teorias e críticas da poesia; do estudo da modernidade, da vanguarda e do modernismo brasileiro; e de obras que relataram a história da relação entre os artistas.

Abstract:

En este artículo se lleva a cabo una lectura de la novela de Blaise Cendrars titulada Les confessions de Dan Yack, incidiendo en toda una serie de motivos (la escritura y la tecnología, la reproductibilidad y la iterabilidad, la huella y el «mal» de archivo, la supervivencia y la espectralidad, el secreto y la mentira, el autor y la firma) que a su vez recorren de arriba abajo el pensamiento de Derrida y sin olvidar, en ningún momento, que ―como él asegura― la literatura torna indecidible la distinción entre ficción y testimonio. Cet article entreprend une lecture du roman de Blaise Cendrars intitulé Les confessions de Dan Yack tout en mettant l’accent sur toute une série de motifs (l’écriture et la technique, la reproductibilité et l’itérabilité, la trace et le «mal d’archive», la survie et la spectralité, le secret et le mensonge, l’auteur et la signature) qui sillonnent dans tous les sens la pensée de Derrida, sans oublier, à aucun moment, que –comme il dit lui-même― la littérature rend indécidable la distinction entre fiction et témoignage.

Abstract:

Já foi muito comentada no Brasil a presença do poeta italiano Giuseppe Ungaretti, que viveu no país de 1937 a 1942, como professor da recém-fundada Universidade de São Paulo. Suas relações com os poetas da vanguarda brasileira que ele conheceu em São Paulo no final dos anos 1930 e com os artistas das vanguardas francesas, que encontrara em Paris nos anos 1920, constituem um intrincado e rico campo de associações, assonâncias e dissonâncias. A poesia de Ungaretti nasce entre as influências parisienses e as do contemporâneo futurismo italiano; analogamente, há sólidos vínculos entre a arte e a cultura brasileiras e esses mesmos movimentos. Na França e no Brasil se encontram, em momentos diferentes, Ungaretti e Blaise Cendrars; Oswald de Andrade, Tarsila do Amaral e Cendrars; Ungaretti, Oswald e Haroldo de Campos. O próprio Haroldo de Campos escreve estudos fundamentais para a interpretação da obra de Oswald de Andrade e traduz e comenta a poesia de Ungaretti. Destaco, nesse campo de relações ítalo-franco-brasileiras, alguns temas comuns, enriquecidos pelas frequentações recíprocas desses poetas e artistas: as relações vanguardas e primitivismo, o contraste velho/novo, a ideia do Brasil.
