Full textAfter 100 years of existence, can cinema be a source of information about the 20th century? does it represent a historical "document" which can be used by historians? is the "unseen" part of films a testimony of social mores, values, and attitudes of the times? this paper starts with a compilation of all forbidden films in quebec throughout the 20th century and then focuses more specifically on the modus operandi of film censorship since the creation of the "bureau de censure des vues animees de la province de quebec", in 1913, until 1967 when censorship came to an end. The last chapter delves into the years leading up to 1978. The "general principles" of censorship in 1913 are based on those of the british board of film censors with an added touch of local flavor : they are a blend of anglo-saxon puritanism and quebec's catholic ultramontanism. The 1920's are marked by a relative easing of censorship in quebec and by a quasi diplomatic confrontation between the canadian province and the united states. Moreover, the fire at the laurier-palace (1927) kept teenagers under 16 away from those "dark and unhealthy theaters" for 50 years. The catholic church then started its most daunting crusade of the 20th century : the fight against immoral films. Then, while duplessis was dictating quebec's fate, the "bureau de censure" seemed more interested in dealing with political issues during the 40's and 50's. For quebec, the 60's signaled an unprecedented historical acceleration. The changing social mores, values and attitudes led to a newly found awareness which changed the face of quebec society forever. This upheaval became known as the quiet revolution. Finally, in 1967, bill 52 was enacted thus ending 50 years of repression in film. This thesis shows that the reasons underlying the rejection of a film reflect the social mores, values and attitudes of 20th century quebecers

Full textIn the XIXth century, catholics face the birth of the "industrial literature", manifestation of the "proto-history" of the media culture. Violently condemning French literature and registering its productions in the Index librorum prohibitorum, the Church, with publishers, work out on a catholic paraliterature's distribution system. In the years 1840 and 1850's, parochial libraries are built in France, Belgium and Quebec for popular reading. From a country to another, with the mediation of the Archibroterhood of the Good Books from Bordeaux, catholics share librarian's methods and books collections. This device combining orthodoxy of the book and orthopraxy of reading testifies to the Church's awareness in cultural issues. It also shows censoring metamorphoses, in contemporaneous times

Full textThis thesis studies Quebec bourgeois’ view of the marginal elements of society between 1840 and 1880. The main sources for the study are Quebec City's five most important newspapers for the period under consideration: the Morning Chronicle, the Quebec Mercury, the Quebec Gazette, the Journal de Québec and Le Canadien. The thesis explores various elements that structured the bourgeois view, such as social classes, age, gender and race. To reach a better understanding, each element was analyzed by examining three forms of bourgeois discourse identified by historians of marginality: the religious and philanthropic discourse, the reforming discourse and the social control or social regulation discourse. Overall, the thesis demonstrates that poverty was the major consideration in the marginalization of many people, that women and children were often treated differently and that strangers and people of different races and religions were those who most experienced the ostracism of being on the margins of society.

Full textRecent bioarchaeological research managed to reconstruct physical activities of certain individuals on the basis of traces left on their skeleton. The integration of two indicators gives a good picture of the physical stress applied on the tissues. Consequently, we integrated bone structural adaptation and muscular modification in order to determine the level of physical stress and to establish the dominant limb implied in certain specialized tasks. We selected eighteen mature men out of the skeletal collection from the St. Matthew protestant cemetery in Quebec city. We recorded twelve muscular and tendinous insertions on a four point scale and measured medio-lateral and antero-posterior diameters to produce four activity related markers on the upper and lower limbs. Variations between the group suggest different models of physical behavior, which can be related to broad social categories of workers.

Full textThe protestant revival in the french-speaking community in quebec in the 1830's unsettled the linguistic and religious opposition between french-speaking catholic canadians and a population which was mainly english-speaking and protestant. Our research has focused on determining the causes and analysing the mechanisms that led this ambitious missionary project to ist eventual failure. The missionary work set our at the start under excellent circumstances since the most favourable conditions for success seemed to be present (the fervour of european proselytes, the support of civilian and religious english-speaking authorities, the weakening or the catholic faith in the french-speaking population). From 1834 to 1860, the five missionary organisations (the french canadian missionary society, the baptist, presbyterian and methodist societies) directed their efforts to colportage, the setting up of missionary stations and education. Yet, these often competing activities greatly reduced their actual efficiency and fueled the spiritual revival of the catholic church. From 1861 to 1880, the evangelization movement moved further and further from its european ties and diversified its activities. In quebec, ultramontanism grew stronger and, banned from their community, quite a number of converts adoptent the english language. Assimilation was brough about either suddenly for those who chose exile or progressively for those who stayed in the province. From 1881 to 1925, four churches (presbyterians, baptists, anglicans, methodists) shared the leadership of the movement which slowly lost strengh. The same churches more and more questioned the relevance of their commitment. In 1925, the anglicans, the baptists and the new united church

Full textThis thesis examines the private charitable sector for English-speakers in Quebec City from 1759 to 1900. It provides an overview of poor relief associations, the needs they addressed, and the gaps that remained. The role of private charities increased over the period studied, and that of the state decreased. Compassion toward the poor also increased, leading to new types of charitable organizations for the underclass. Despite this, the prison system served as a refuge to fill gaps in the private charitable sector. More specifically, this study demonstrates how changes in ethno-religious relations shaped the charity network. In the first half century after the Conquest of Quebec, British authorities supported the Catholic charitable infrastructure established during the French regime, which was unusual within the British Empire. After 1815, as immigration from Britain and Ireland increased, lay private voluntary associations emerged, including many that involved elite cooperation across religious and linguistic lines. Instances of cooperation decreased from 1835 to 1855 due to rising ethnic boundaries caused by the defeat of Patriote republicanism, an increase in religious practice, the establishment of separate confessional schools, and a new type of Irish-Catholic nationalism following the Great Famine. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, the private charitable sector became sharply divided into three parallel networks with hardly any overlap: one for Francophone Catholics, one for English-speaking Irish Catholics, and one for English-speaking Protestants. Two core institutions founded in the 1850s, Saint Bridget’s Asylum and the Ladies’ Protestant Home, cemented the divide. Rare attempts to challenge these boundaries resulted in tension and even violence. Despite these divisions, there was a greater mutual respect of established boundaries among communities than in most North American cities.
