Abstract:
Abstract I have used mid-infrared (IR) photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to perform a census of circumstellar disks among ∼10,000 candidate members of the Sco-Cen complex that were recently identified with data from the Gaia mission. IR excesses are detected for more than 1200 of the WISE counterparts that are within the commonly adopted boundary for Sco-Cen, ∼400 of which are newly reported in this work. The richest population in Sco-Cen, UCL/LCC, contains the largest available sample of disks (>500) for any population near its age (∼20 Myr). UCL/LCC also provi

Abstract We present the first comprehensive census of the satellite population around a Large Magellanic Cloud stellar-mass galaxy, as part of the Magellanic Analog Dwarf Companions and Stellar Halos (MADCASH) survey. We have surveyed NGC 2403 (D = 3.0 Mpc) with the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam imager out to a projected radius of 90 kpc (with partial coverage extending out to ∼110 kpc, or ∼80% of the virial radius of NGC 2403), resolving stars in the uppermost ∼2.5 mag of its red giant branch. By looking for stellar overdensities in the red giant branch spatial density map, we identify 149 satelli

Abstract We define a sample of 200 protostellar outflows showing blue- and redshifted CO emission in the nearby molecular clouds Ophiuchus, Taurus, Perseus, and Orion, to investigate the correlation between outflow orientations and local, but relatively large-scale, magnetic field directions traced by Planck 353 GHz dust polarization. At high significance (p ∼ 10−4), we exclude a random distribution of relative orientations and find that there is a preference for alignment of projected plane of sky outflow axes with magnetic field directions. The distribution of relative position angles peaks

Abstract:
Abstract Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are highly energetic phenomena that occur when a star is tidally disrupted by the central massive black hole in a galaxy. Fitting the observed X-ray spectra of TDEs with a first-principles, general-relativistic slim-disk model for the emission from the inner accretion disk can constrain the black hole mass M • and dimensionless spin a •. Multiepoch spectra can break degeneracies in parameter estimation, particularly when they include a period of super-Eddington mass accretion. Even one observed super-Eddington epoch can be useful.
