Abstract:
Context: Recent data on exertional heat illness (EHI) in high school sports are limited yet warranted to identify specific settings with the highest risk of EHI. Objective: To describe the epidemiology of EHI in high school sports during the 2012/2013–2016/2017 academic years. Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Setting: Aggregate injury and exposure data collected from athletic trainers working in high school sports in the United States. Patients or Other Participants: High school athletes during the 2012/2013–2016/2017 academic years. Intervention: High School Reporting Information Online surveillance system data from the 2012/2013–2016/2017 academic years were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures: EHI counts, rates per 10,000 athlete exposures (AEs), and distributions were examined by sport, event type, and US census region. EHI management strategies provided by athletic trainers were analyzed. Injury rate ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) compared EHI rates. Results: Overall, 300 EHIs were reported for an overall rate of 0.13/10,000 AE (95% CI, 0.11 to 0.14). Of these, 44.3% occurred in American football preseason practices; 20.7% occurred in American football preseason practices with a registered air temperature ≥90°F and ≥1 hour into practice. The EHI rate was higher in American football than all other sports (0.52 vs 0.04/10,000 AE; injury rate ratio = 11.87; 95% CI, 9.22 to 15.27). However, girls’ cross-country had the highest competition EHI rate (1.18/10,000 AE). The EHI rate was higher in the South US census region than all other US census regions (0.23 vs 0.08/10,000 AE; injury rate ratio = 2.96; 95% CI, 2.35 to 3.74). Common EHI management strategies included having medical staff on-site at the onset of EHI (92.7%), removing athlete from play (85.0%), and giving athlete fluids via the mouth (77.7%). Conclusions: American football continues to have the highest overall EHI rate although the high competition EHI rate in girls’ cross-country merits additional examination. Regional differences in EHI incidence, coupled with sport-specific variations in management, may highlight the need for region- and sport-specific EHI prevention guidelines.

Abstract:
Using data issued by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the authors examine the strength of statewide firearm laws across the United States one year before and after the 2012 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Regressions fitted to the cross-section of all states in 2011 and 2013 show how Brady Scores differ across census divisions after allowing for statewide differences in firearm death rates and political party control of the state legislature. In the aftermath of Newtown, gun laws have either not changed or in census divisions where they have significantly changed, they have become less restrictive.

Abstract:
Results of the survey of wintering Great Grey Shrikes Lanius excubitor at Ljubljansko barje in winters 2008/09, 2011/12 and 2012/13 are presented. The census was conducted by 30-60 volunteers of the Ljubljana branch of DOPPS - BirdLife Slovenia. The survey area was divided into 13-20 census plots. Locations of Great Grey Shrikes, types of structures on which the shrikes perched, and heights of their perches were recorded. The numbers of wintering Great Grey Shrikes at Ljubljansko barje were estimated at 57 (2008/09), 51 (2011/12) and 67 (2012/13) individuals. Crude densities in the census area were 4.2, 3.7 and 4.9 individuals/10 km2, whereas maximal local densities reached 15.0, 14.6 and 14.8 individuals/10 km2. The analysis of the actual land use revealed higher densities of Great Grey Shrikes in the areas with a higher proportion of grassland and a lower proportion of arable fields and gardens in winter 2008/09; there was no such gradient in the other two winters. Great Grey Shrikes were most often observed in treetops, on powerlines and bushes in winters 2011/12 and 2012/13, while in winter 2008/09 they were more often observed on herbaceous stems and less often on powerlines. Moreover, the heights of their perches were lower than in the other two winters.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria calls for monitoring inpatient antibiotic use to inform stewardship efforts. We estimated national trends in inpatient antibiotic usage from 2012 to 2017 in a large cohort of US hospitals. Methods We utilized the Premier Healthcare Database, containing detailed administrative records available by census region, including inpatient drug utilization data based on billing records, for all patients discharged from a convenience sample of over 700 US hospitals annually, approximately 20% of US inpatient discharges. We retrospectively estimated days of therapy (DOT)/1,000 patient-days (PDs) by year overall and by antibiotic class. To examine trends over time, we created multivariable models adjusting for hospital-specific location of antibiotic use (ICU vs. other) and hospital-specific summary measures including average patient age, average co-morbidity score, case mix index, number of hospital beds, teaching status, urban/rural location, US census division, proportion of discharges with a surgical diagnosis-related code, and proportion of PDs with an infectious disease primary ICD-9/10-CM discharge code. Estimates and models were weighted to be nationally representative using projected weights from the database. Results 58% of patients had at least one antibiotic DOT, and the overall DOT for all hospitals was 810 DOT/1,000 PDs (interquartile range 701 to 913 DOT/1,000 PDs). Glycopeptides and third-/fourth-generation cephalosporins were the most common antibiotic classes (Figure 1). Overall antibiotic DOT did not change significantly over time, P = 0.9133. However, class-specific DOT varied with large decreases in fluoroquinolones from 2012 to 2017 (55% decrease, P < 0.0001), and large increases in third-/fourth-generation cephalosporins and tetracyclines (32% and 49% increase, respectively, P < 0.0001) (Figure 2). Overall antibiotic DOT significantly varied among US census divisions (Figure 3). Conclusion Estimated overall inpatient antibiotic DOT did not change in US hospitals from 2012 to 2017, but there were significant class-specific changes. The large decrease in fluoroquinolone use may reflect increased awareness of adverse events. Disclosures All Authors: No reported Disclosures.

Abstract:
Aims and methodWe aimed to explore access by Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) elders to the memory services in Leicester and Leicestershire, examining any trends over time. We then compared the odds of referral by ethnicity, using observed versus expected referrals for the city of Leicester. We gathered data on a comprehensive county-wide memory clinic used by people with suspected dementia and memory problems from the Trust electronic record system during the period 2011–2017. For Leicester city, we compared referral rates for 2011–2017 and compared observed and expected referral rates with demographics from the UK Census 2011.ResultsIn Leicester, there was a significant underrepresentation of referrals from the BAME population as compared with the White population in 2011, 2012 and 2013, when compared with population estimates of those aged ≥60 years from the 2011 UK Census Leicester city data. Data for the Black population were too small for comparisons. The odds of being referred to a memory clinic for the White group was double that of the Asian group in 2011 (odds ratio 2.15, 95% CI 1.52–3.02) and nearly 1.5 times in 2012 (odds ratio 1.40, 95% CI 1.01–1.93). This difference did not persist after 2014. However, this differential odds of referral changes when the age difference between the groups is accounted for. After adjusting for age, there were no differences between the two groups in their odds of referral to the memory clinic from 2011 to 2013, but from 2014 to 2017, members of the Asian group had higher odds of being referred.Clinical implicationsThe relationship between BAME and access to memory services is complex. The relative lower prevalence of Asian people among referrals to memory services in Leicester from 2011 to 2013 may partly be explained by the lower ages of the Asian population at referral. The higher prevalence of Asian people in 2014–2017 may be owing to use of denominators from the 2011 UK Census, which are likely to be disproportionately low for this group. Further studies are needed to explore any potential barriers to the access of services by BAME communities.

This research focuses on estimating infant and under-five mortality in South Africa for the period 1998-2012, both to update previous estimates taking into account new data and to assess the reasonableness of all estimates. Data from the 2011 Census and the 2012 HSRC survey were used for this purpose. The 2011 Census provided data from deaths reported by households as well as the survival of the most recent births. The 2012 HSRC provided full birth history data for women aged 15-49 which were used for direct estimation of childhood mortality. Deaths reported by households together with census estimates of the number of children under the age of five are used to produce estimates of infant and under-five mortality using the synthetic cohort life table approach.

Abstract:
The implementation of privatization and Structural Adjustment Programs in Zambia saw the contribution of manufacturing in GDP significantly reduce from 37.2 percent in 1992 to 8.2 percent in 2013. Efforts to revamp manufacturing have not delivered to expectations and the industrial base has continued to be smaller than it used to be in the 1970s and 1980s. This has raised serious questions about suitable industrialization policies not only for Zambia but for other African countries as well. This study examines the agro-processing industry with a view to establish whether it can drive the development of Zambia's manufacturing. We start by exploring the growth opportunities and highlighting the key sectors of comparative advantage. Thereafter, we apply the Data Envelopment Analysis algorithm to construct measures of technical and scale efficiency for a sample of 115 firms using the 2011/2012 Economic Census data. Finally, we examine the effect of firm attributes on the firm's technical and scale efficiency using the Tobit regression model. The results reveal that there are sufficient growth opportunities in Zambia's agro-processing industry, but the industry is highly inefficient. The average technical efficiency was 42.5 percent while scale efficiency was 81.7 percent. The study also shows that firm efficiency is affected by firm size, the size of the firm's market share, labour costs, and location of the firm.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the different discourses related to freedom of expression linked to collec-tion development that can be identified in and around the public library field. Questions posed in this study are: What discourses can be found and how do they interact? How is the public library’s mission described in relation to freedom of expression and collection development within each dis-course? Which subject positions are visible in the debate? The theoretical starting-point is Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory. The used method is discourse an-alytic, but since Laclau and Mouffe provide no explicit step by step method how to use their theory, we have had to find inspiration in other discourse analytic papers. 38 articles from library journals and daily newspapers were analyzed. The re-sult of the analysis reveals three discourses: a libertarian dis-course, a profession-centred discourse and a reflexive dis-course. From a professional point of view selection, based on professional considerations, is a necessity since no public li-brary is able to stock everything. From a libertarian perspec-tive, the public library’s mission is to serve the public with-out any censorship filters. The main position in the reflexive discourse is that freedom of expression is negotiated in dia-logue with vulnerable groups to ensure a public library for all. Based on the result of the analysis we draw the conclu-sion that the interpretations of laws and guidelines differ within the public library discourse. We therefore propose a clearer national coordination on collection development strat-egies.

Abstract:
In 2011, Statistics Austria carried out its first register-based census. Advantages of using administrative data for statistical purposes are, among others, a reduced burden for respondents and lower cost for the National Statistical Institutes (NSI). However, new challenges, like need for a new approach to the quality assessment of this kind of data arise. Therefore, Statistics Austria developed a comprehensive standardized framework to evaluate data quality for register-based statistics. In this paper, we present the basic concept of this quality framework and provide detailed results from the quality evaluation of the Austrian census of 2011. More specifically, we derive a quality measure for each census attribute from four complementary hyperdimensions. The first three of these hyperdimensions address the documentation of data, the usability of records and an external data validation. The fourth hyperdimension focuses on the quality of data imputations. The proposed framework combines these different quality-related information sources for each attribute to form an overall quality indicator. This procedure allows to track changes in quality during data processing and to compare the quality of different census generations.

Abstract:
This research has as a theme the construction of the history of literacy according to the gender perspective, in the municipality of São Francisco de Paula/ RS state . It´s about a historical study of the education under the view of the relation of equality and inequality gender as literacy. The first chapter approaches the Condorcet’s public education universal project emphasizing the defense of public education, secular, universal and of female instruction. The second chapter is about the historical struggle for gender equality as literacy. The third chapter proceeds the analysis of literacy taxes in São Francisco de Paula municipality in Rio Grande do Sul state during a historic route that includes the Brazilian population censuses from 1920 to 2010. This analysis of literacy course also used the literacy and illiteracy data for Rio Grande do Sul State and for Brazil as well from many censuses: 1920, 1950, 1980 and 2010, considering as a starting point the literacy and illiteracy rates of the first Brazilian census in the 1872. This research revealed, illiteracy, as for Rio Grande do Sul state and for Brazil, they are much lower than those noticed in the first census of 1782, as well as in the census of 1920. The illiteracy rates of the sexes, from the 1920 census to 1950, shows a slightly male superiority, this superiority that from 1950 is losing strength and even reversing. Indeed, the analysis of literacy rates of census of 1950, 1980 and 2010 according to age, both for Brazil and for Rio Grande do Sul state, revealed that the young women generation are proportionally more literacy than the men of these generations, contrary to what it still has on the older generations. The general literacy rates of the total population of 10 or 15 years old or more, in these same censuses, in the municipality of the research, indicate an increase in the rates of literacy slightly higher among women than among men, although still keeping superiority in favor male, but with almost elimination of inequality in the 2010 census. It follows that even illiteracy rates have considerably decreased, remains the challenge, of literacy for all, for Brazilian women and men to the complete overcoming of illiteracy still existing. This research also reported the close relationship between literary and schooling, highlighting the effects that this has on that, as supported by Cook- Gumperz (1991).

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the debates and discourses in Swedish media about the collection development and handling of controversial content in public libraries 2016–2018. The debates broke out after a couple of libraries chose to refuse purchase proposals regarding books and newspapers considered as controversial. Some libraries and librarians were in turn accused of censorship and making decisions based on political views when refusing these proposals. Questions posed in this study are: What discourses can be found in the debates about controversial content and collection development in public libraries? What views of the public libraries are expressed in the debates? What views of collection development in public libraries are expressed in the debates? What concepts, arguments and expressions appears in the debates, and what significance and meaning do they get in the discourses? Which subject positions appears in the debate? The theoretical and methodological framework is based on Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory. The empirical material consists of 22 articles derived from Swedish newspapers, news outlets and library journals. The analyze reveals three discourses: a freedom of information discourse, a profession discourse and a collection normative discourse. The freedom of information discourse represents a view that public libraries should be neutral and objective in their work with collection development and serve the users with whatever they ask for and not base their decisions on political views or other values. In the profession discourse they argue for the importance of librarian’s professional considerations and following policies, guidelines and laws when working with collection development. In the collection normative discourse, they question the imposed neutrality on libraries and argue for greater freedom of action when dealing with controversial content that might undermine human rights and the idea that all humans are equal.

Abstract:
AbstractEnvironmental taxes and oil market fluctuations can increase road fuel prices significantly and are likely to play a big role in the future. This raises social justice issues, as some low-income households rely on cars for access to services and opportunities but struggle to afford related expenses. The impacts of fuel price increases are unevenly spatially distributed, as shown by transport, planning and urban research. We investigate spatial patterns of vulnerability to fuel price increases in Italy, a country where the problem is particularly pronounced due to high motorisation rate relative to income, and high fuel prices. We define vulnerability as the combination of high exposure (high car use), high sensitivity (low income) and low adaptive capacity (high car dependence). Based on municipality-level data on motorisation and the journey to work from the 2011 Italian Census and official income tax revenue data for 2012 (as a proxy for income) we derive a composite indicator of vulnerability. The results show: i) a co-location of low-income and high car use on the periphery of many Italian city regions; ii) stark interregional differences, with lower income levels in the South driving high levels of vulnerability, despite lower levels of car ownership and use.

Abstract:
Censuses in Serbia often introduce new methodological solutions, making it increasingly challenging to analyse population changes. Methodological differences in the results of the last three censuses (2002, 2011, and 2022) hinder accurate data comparisons and lead to significantly varied interpretations of census data. Assessing net migration in the inter-census period and generating annual postcensal estimates of the total population, which form the basis for calculating demographic indicators, rely on census-derived data. Annual population estimates can deviate significantly from actual values, particularly when the base year (census year) is distant. As a result, estimates for 2021 and 2022 differ by over 180 thousand due to being based on different censuses. Intercensal estimates have not been conducted in Serbia to date, but they can substantially impact the correction of demographic indicators, especially at lower territorial-administrative levels. Intercensal estimates refer to population estimates between two censuses and are deemed more precise than postcensal estimates as they approximate data between two specific points in time. Leveraging census results (2002, 2011, and 2022), vital events in the inter-census period, and internal migration data, annual population figures at the municipal level and the extent of external migration will be computed. These calculations will enable the estimation of population figures and total net migration for all higher territorial-administrative units, starting from the municipal level. Consequently, the fundamental demographic indicators for 2002–2022 will be reevaluated based on the acquired data. The outcomes are expected to reveal the extent to which population estimates were overstated in official reports due to the exclusion of external migration in their computation. This imprecision led to inaccuracies in basic demographic indicators. By rectifying the data, it is anticipated that death rates and fertility levels will slightly surpass the officially published values during the inter-census period. The data obtained from intercensal estimates should demonstrate how the migration component influences population fluctuations at the municipal level.

Abstract:
Teaching programming is a common choice to introduce computational thinking concepts. When learning programming, students face several challenges, problem solving and debugging among them. These activities are central to the concept of computational thinking [Flórez, Casallas, Hernández, Reyes, Restrepo and Danies 2017]. Previous research shows that teaching logic and programming to undergraduates is a hard task [Bromwich, Masoodian and Rogers 2012] [Liu, Cheng and Huang 2011]. This finding lead us to believe that the earlier a person is accustomed with those abstract concepts, the easier it will be for her to learn and use that knowledge when necessary. According to Piaget, kids of age approximately seven to eleven are on the concrete operational stage [Piaget and Cook 1952], in which they already can construct abstract ideas and logical structures on their mind. Children are spending more time than ever1 using mobile devices. At the same time, it is becoming common practice to teach children a very basic form of 1 The Common Sense Census: Media use by kids age zero to eigth 2017 https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research/the-common-sense-census-media-use-by-kids-age-zero -to-eight-2017

In Population in Post-Yugoslav Countries: (Dis)Similarities and Perspectives. Institute of Social Sciences, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.59954/ppycdsp2024.44.

Full text
Abstract:
Demographic trends are a current topic today, because a large part of the European continent, and therefore the post-Yugoslav countries, are characterized by processes of depopulation, senility, and significant emigration. The border areas of the states, which are located outside the main economic streams in the country, are particularly at risk and are rapidly becoming depopulated. The paper focuses on studying the demographic characteristics of the border area of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Croatia. The analysis was carried out at the level of NUTS 3 (Zapadnobačka oblast in the Republic of Serbia and Osiječko-baranjska županija in the Republic of Croatia) to observe the similarities and differences in the demographic characteristics of the mentioned territory. Census data from both countries were used (Croatia - 2011 and 2021; Serbia - 2011 and 2022). One of the priorities of the work is to determine the trend of population movement in the border area of one country that is a member of the European Union (the Republic of Croatia since 2013) and another, neighbouring country, which is a candidate for membership (the Republic of Serbia since 2012). The following were considered: the change in the number of inhabitants, the average age of the population, the rates of birth, mortality, and natural increase, the rates of emigration, immigration, and migration balance, the age-sex structure of the population, to more meaningfully understand the demographic tendencies of this border area and give predictions for the future. The results of the research show that between 2011 and 2022, the Zapadnobačka oblast lost 33,596 inhabitants, i.e. 17.86%, while Osiječko-baranjska županija lost 47,006 inhabitants in the period from 2011 to 2021, i.e. 15.41%. Such data were influenced by the decline in fertility, negative natural growth, and the migration balance. Bearing this in mind, the paper proposes measures that can improve the demographic picture of the studied area, and they concern cross-border cooperation between the two countries and the application of good practice solutions implemented by countries facing the same problems.

Cruces, Juan José. Argentina's Residential Real Estate Sector: A Magnet for Savings amidst Mistrust in Traditional Investment Vehicles. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009277.

Abstract:
This paper measures the flow of funds into the real estate sector for the city of Buenos Aires since 1992 and compares it to traditional savings instruments. For each dollar that went into the city's real estate from 1992 until 2000, about six dollars went into deposits in the national banking system. From 2003 until 2012, for each dollar that went into real estate, only 99 cents went to bank deposits. While the 2010 census reports a vacancy rate of 24 percent for the city, analysis of a micro data set on individual house electricity consumption suggests that the rate is only about 6 percent, in line with international standards. Increased supply, however, has resulted in a dramatic reduction of real rental values and rental yields. The paper concludes by estimating the welfare loss from allocating society's scarce capital to such a low-return activity, which is interpreted as a lower bound of the flow cost of mistrust in traditional savings instruments.

Abstract:
This report characterizes the educational system in the Canary Islands in terms of inequality, inequity and inequality of opportunities in academic performance. We use census and/or sample data on compulsory primary and secondary education students enrolled in 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years. This data is provided by the Agencia Canaria de Calidad Universitaria y Evaluación Educativa (ACCUEE) through its periodic diagnostic assessment reports. Our results reveal that, in terms of inequality and inequity in compulsory secondary education, Canary Islands are not situated in a bad position with respect to Spain and OCDE. However, although we do not find significant differences in inequality between primary and secondary education, we do find strong differences in inequity in academic performance. We show that students’ socioeconomic status plays a more important role in compulsory secondary education and in the English course. We estimate a regression model to analyse the variables that explain inequality of opportunity in academic performance. We conclude that, considering our set of circumstances, inequality of opportunity explains 36%, 38% and 46% of total inequality in the third and sixth stages of primary education and the fourth stage of compulsory secondary education, respectively, and that inequality of opportunities is higher in secondary education and in the English course. Among our set of circumstances, parents’ education and occupation, the number of books in the household and household income are the most important ones both in primary and secondary education, being parents’ education especially relevant in primary education and the number of books in secondary education. This work contributes to the identification of the sources of inequality of opportunities in the Canary Islands. Therefore, our results are intended to be helpful in shaping education policies aimed at improving the equity of the educational system.
