The global center is a newly proposed graph concept. For a graph G = (V(G), E(G)), a set S ⊆ V(G) is a global distribution center if every vertex v ∈ V(G)\S is adjacent to a vertex u ∈ S with |N[u] ∩ S| ≥ |N[v] ∩ (V(G)\S)|, where N(v) = {u ∈ V(G)|uv ∈ E(G)} and N[v] = N(v) ∪ {v}. The global distribution center number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a global distribution center of G. In this paper, we investigate the global distribution center number for special families of graphs. Furthermore, we develop a polynomial time heuristic algorithm to find the set of the global distributio

With the increase in the percentage of the population defined as elderly, increasing numbers of people suffer from walking disabilities due to illness or accidents. An omni-directional walker (ODW) has been developed that can support people with walking disabilities and allow them to perform indoor walking. The ODW can identify the user’s directional intention based on the user’s forearm pressures and then supports movement in the intended direction. In this chapter, a reference trajectory is generated based on the intended direction in order to support directed movement. The ODW needs to follow the generated path. However, path tracking errors occur because the center of gravity (COG) of the system shifts and the load changes due to user`s pressure. An adaptive control method is proposed to deal with this issue. The results of simulations indicate that the ODW can accurately follow the user’s intended direction by inhibiting the influence of COG shifts and the resulting load change. The proposed scheme is feasible for supporting indoor movement.

This is a brief interstitial introduction by art historian Kim A. Munson describing the rediscovery of original comic art following the Pop Art movement and influential publications of the late 1960’s. A wave of large survey shows were organized that took on a more formal appearance and established a loose canon of comic artists. The National Cartoonist Society’s Cavalcade of Comics toured the US. Well reviewed shows of the early 70s included The Art of the Comic Strip (U of Maryland, 1971), The Comics as an Art Form (U of Nevada Las Vegas), and 75 Years of the Comics (New York Cultural Center). Many shows included underground comix. Comics speciality museums opened and flourished, such as the Museum of Comic Art (Rye Brook, NY, 1975), The Cartoon Art Museum (San Francisco, 1987), and the ToonSeum (Pittsburgh, 2007). Full text
Abstract:
Our starting point is not hidden, nor is it far off. It is not an extreme place like Mono Lake or Freswick Castle, but it is a central concept expressed on a single page. The periodic table is the center of chemistry, and therefore of this book. You can spot it at a distance from its vaguely cathedral-like shape. You can see the chemical symbols that it contains on magnets and T-shirts and restaurant signs. Its regular columns are not quite symmetric, but that is because it has been twisted out of its natural shape by the contingencies of history. Rearrange it just a little and a simple mathematical pattern appears. To see this pattern, imagine that the periodic table is made out of beads on an abacus, arranged in the familiar U shape. Then push all the beads to the left: … Row 1 = H- He Row 2 = Li- Be- B- C- N- O- F- Ne Row 3 = Na- Mg- Al- Si- P- S- Cl- Ar Row 4 = K- Ca- Sc- Ti- V- Cr- Mn- Fe- Co- Ni- Cu- Zn- Ga- Ge- As- Se- Br- Kr Row 5 = Rb- Sr- Y- Zr- Nb- Mo- Tc- Ru- Rh- Pd- Ag- Cd- In- Sn- Sb- Te- I- Xe … By row, there are 2, 8, 8, 18, and 18 elements. The pattern continues in the rows below, but it is obscured by the fact that on most tables 14 elements have been moved out of the sixth and seventh rows. On the table here I have put them where they belong. These rows have 32 elements each. This can be simplified even more. The rows increase, first by 2, then by 6 more (2 + 6 = 8), then by 10 more (2 + 6 + 10 = 18), then by 14 (2 + 6 + 10 + 18 = 32). The series 2, 6, 10, 14 is the doubles of counting up by odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7. Put another way, each row is equal to 2n + 1 with n = integers from 0.

Abstract:
A mechanical start system has been developed to start the Ship’s Service Gas Turbine Generators (SSGTG) on board U.S. naval destroyers. The current starting system uses either stored high pressure air or bleed air from another running turbine. The U.S. Navy has reviewed the high pressure air system and found it to be a costly system for both ship construction and maintenance. As a result, the Navy is requiring an alternative starting method that will replace high pressure air. It should be noted that any alternative that introduces compressed air to start the SSGTG depends on the start air reg

Three children with severe inherited bleeding disorders have been followed for a number of years at this center. One child (DOB 3/71) initially presented with mild hemophilia A, (Factor VIII 6%). He subsequently developed an inhibitor to Factor VIII (maximum 45 B. U.) and seroconverted to HIV+ Status 12/83. In 12/86 he had virtually lost his antibody response to infused Factor VIII (previously withheld), with a maximum increase in inhibitor titre to1 B. U. on challenge. In addition, his antitetanus antibody titre was very low at 0.01 u/ml earlier in theyear. His absolute T4 cell number at this

The introduction of heat treatment of FVIII or FIX concentrates has reduced the risk of infection, however, has raised the question of a reduced haemo-statical effect. Therefore, the in vivo recovery and half-life of a steam-treated FIX concentrate (S-TIM4, Immuno) were investigated in 10 haemophilia B patients from two haemophilia centers. Patients mean age was 33 y (range 17-51 y) and the mean body weight (BW> was 67 kg (range 44-81 kg). Basal FIX levels ranged from 0.007 to 0.03 (median 0,007) U/ml. The patients had not received FIX concentrate at least 7 d prior to the study. Patients 1

Fresh water is one of the few resources which is scarce and has no replacement; it is also closely coupled to energy consumption. Fresh water usage for power generation and other cooling applications is well known and accounts for 40% of total freshwater withdrawal in the U. S[1]. A significant amount of energy is embedded in the consumption of water for conveyance, treatment and distribution of water. Waste water treatment plants also consume a significant amount of energy. For example, water distribution systems and water treatment plants consume 1.3MWh and 0.5MWh[2], respectively, for every

Human plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 is an Mr∼54,000 protein which specifically inhibits urokinase-type (u-PA) and tissue-type (t-PA) plasminogen activators. During inhibition, u-PA and t-PA convert PAI-1 to an inactive form with Mr∼50,000. We have determined the amino-terminal amino acid sequence of native and converted PAI-1, and isolated and partly sequenced PAI-1 cDNA. The data show that the conversion of PAI-1 consists of cleavage of an Arg-Met bond 33 residues from the carboxy-terminus, thus localizing the reactive center of the inhibitor to that position, and identifying PAI-1 a

The need for energy efficiency captured the attention of all sectors of our society in the 1970s when energy supplies dwindled and prices increased. Interest in energy efficiency continued during the 1980s primarily due to environmental concerns and secondarily because of economic and industrial competitiveness issues. Energy supply disruptions caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and recent hikes in energy prices have generated a renewed interest in energy efficiency. An example of this renewed interest is that the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiated, developed, and implemented a nat
