Abstract:
Abstract Increased funding of nanotechnology research in the USA at the turn of the millennium was paired with a legislative commitment to and a novel societal research policy for the responsible development of nanotechnology. Innovative policy discourses at the time suggested that such work could engage a variety of publics, stakeholders, and researchers to enhance the capacity of research systems to adapt and be responsive to societal values and concerns. This article reviews one of two federally funded social science research centers—the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University(CNS-ASU)—to assess the merits of this form of engaged social science research in which social science contributes not only to traditional knowledge production but also to the capacity of natural science and engineering researchers and research communities for greater reflexivity and responsiveness, ultimately producing more socially robust research systems.

Abstract:
107 Background: NCCN and the Institute of Medicine recommend distress screening for all cancer patients. Surveys have found that 20% to 47% of newly diagnosed and recurrent cancer patients experience significant levels of distress. Less than half of distressed patients with cancer are actually identified and referred for psychosocial help. The development of screening tools, processes, appropriate timing, and systems for follow up on concerns is an ongoing challenge for many cancer programs. Mountain States Tumor Institute p,iloted a distress screen process as part of our work with NCCCP. Methods: From October 24, 2011, to April 30, 2012, 133 patients completed distress screens. Most frequently reported concerns included fatigue (50%), sleep changes (32%), and anxiety/worry (31%). 51% of patients reported three or more concerns. 90% of all patients reporting anxiety also reported fatigue or sleep problems. All patients who reported concerns were offered social work and other supports. Screens were reviewed by social workers and discussed at weekly multidisciplinary psychosocial care rounds by social workers, psychiatrist, nurse practitioners, and chaplains. A variety of interventions were used to respond to distress including symptom management, education and referrals to on-site social workers, chaplains, supportive care clinic, integrative medicine and psychiatry. Results: A task was created in Mosaiq Electronic Medical Record to cue Health Information Specialists to schedule patients for distress screening as close as possible to 45 days from first chemotherapy treatment. Patients completed screens before seeing their medical provider. The majority of patients screened received one or more interventions in follow-up. Conclusions: EMRs can be effective tools to cue scheduled screening of patient distress. The use of multidisciplinary psychosocial care rounds can effectively help clinics plan interventions to alleviate patient distress. The use of rounds can ensure staff from different disciplines are not duplicating efforts and can help determine appropriate timing of various psychosocial interventions. Abstract:
Social inclusion is a goal of 21st-century education and social welfare, yet research with violently displaced youth leaves gaps in its meaning. Social inclusion, a societal aim, lacks the perspectives of youth at its center. Given the pressures and power relations involved in learning how young people think and feel about social injustices and the support they need, developmental researchers must find innovative ways to study youth experiences and intentions in relation to environments, especially environments that threaten young lives. Emerging research highlights how displaced youth, peers along their journeys, and adults guiding supportive interventions make audible the meaning of social inclusion. Policy paradigms would benefit from research on sense-making in interventions rather than from emphasizing behavioral assessments and assimilation to local norms, as implied by social inclusion.

Abstract:
This paper analyses how a group of researchers from different disciplines has been able to form creative collaborative spaces to model life together. Making mathematical models of life is a new way of creating biological knowledge – called systems biology – that ultimately aims to revolutionise medicine, by making it more effective through personalisation. By conceptualizing this interdisciplinary effort to create a new research field as a Scientific/Intellectual Movement, I analyse the entanglement of epistemic and social transformations, discussing how systems biology moved from the periphery towards the center of biology. Thereby, I am turning the focus on the spatial dimensions of Scientific/Intellectual Movements. More specifically, I introduce a topological approach detailing three interrelated spatial movements: aggregation, circulation and oscillation that together constitute the choreography of systems biology. They show how some strong, dispersed, local centers have effectively raised funds to build human capacity, organisations and infrastructures, while creating international networks. Through interaction with science policy makers, a global circulation of policies took place, stimulating the building of collaborative centers for systems biology, while the ending of funding programmes is now causing fragmentation again. As such, this paper argues that the choreography of systems biology as a Scientific/Intellectual Movement exemplifies how spatial (re-)configurations are fundamental to transformations in the knowledge landscape and the institutionalization of creativity.

Abstract:
In the United States, community coalitions are an important part of the public health milieu, and thus, subject to many of the same external pressures as other organizations—including changes in required strategic orientation. Many funding agencies have shifted their funding agenda from program development to policy change. Thus, the Florida Prevention Research Center created the Community-Based Prevention Marketing (CBPM) for Policy Development framework to teach community coalitions how to apply social marketing to policy change. The research reported here was designed to explicate the framework’s theory of change. We describe and demonstrate a hybrid evaluation approach: utilization-focused developmental evaluation. The research question was “What are the linkages and connections among CBPM inputs, activities, immediate outcomes, intermediate outcomes, and ultimate impacts?” We implemented a case study design, with the case being a normative community coalition. The study adhered to a well-developed series of steps for system dynamics modeling. Community coalition leaders may expect CBPM to provide immediate gains in coalition performance. Results from causal diagramming show how gains in performance are delayed and follow an initial decline in performance. We discuss the practical implications for CBPM’s developers—for example, importance of managing coalition expectations—and other social marketers—for example, expansion of the evaluation toolkit.

Abstract:
Sustainable development means the ability of an object to maintain the required level of environmental, social and economic indicators while meeting the needs of not only the living, but also future generations. These standards suggest using a uniform estimated figure that considers economic, environmental and social indicators. Design with resource-saving technologies has become an important part of the developed Terms of Reference for the project, and environmental friendliness has become a key element of the business center marketing strategy. The research is aimed at developing a business center construction project as a sustainable development model. The research results are the following tasks: to perform calculations on the total cost of the building’s life cycle; perform the project economic efficiency assessment; consider technical solutions for power consumption systems, building heat supply and water consumption systems; analyze the sustainability of the project environment; identify the risk levels for the business center construction project development. The research itself develops a concept for the project implementation, project risk analysis was carried out, the categories for assessing the environmental sustainability were compared with possible technical solutions of the project construction. There were also considered technical characteristics on internal and external lighting, heat supply of the building, water treatment and re-use, and energy-efficient elevators. The conducted risk assessment revealed a low cumulative risk of this construction project development. With the factored level of incomes and expenses, the project can be recognized as efficient. Further research matters can be issues of a detailed study at the level of a comprehensive ESG risk assessment of contemporary construction companies.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the initial relationship between the Classification Research Group (CRG) and the Center for Documentation and Communication Research (CDCR) and how this relationship changed between 1952 and 1970. The theory of normative behavior and its concepts of worldviews, social norms, social types, and information behavior are used to characterize the relationship between the small worlds of the two groups with the intent of understanding the gap between early classification research and information retrieval (IR) research. Design/methodology/approach This is a mixed method analysis of two groups as evidenced in published artifacts by and about their work. A thorough review of historical literature about the groups as well as their own published works was employed and an author co-citation analysis was used to characterize the conceptual similarities and differences of the two groups of researchers. Findings The CRG focused on fundamental principles to aid classification and retrieval of information. The CDCR were more inclined to develop practical methods of retrieval without benefit of good theoretical foundations. The CRG began it work under the contention that the general classification schemes at the time were inadequate for the developing IR mechanisms. The CDCR rejected the classification schemes of the times and focused on developing punch card mechanisms and processes that were generously funded by both government and corporate funding. Originality/value This paper provides a unique historical analysis of two groups of influential researchers in the field of library and information science.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the way the CGIAR system has incorporated social research in its agenda. Since 1995, the social science staff capacity in the CGIAR has decreased by 24 %, and the overall balance of social science research is still significantly tilted away from the core germplasm enhancement, production systems/natural resources management, and technology adoption work – the ‘bread and butter’ of technology generation and development effort – toward ex-ante and ex-post activities. Further, the bulk of the social science research has low social research content despite the significant expansion of the CGIAR initial goal of increasing the proverbial ‘pile of rice’ to poverty alleviation and sustainable food security. The paper concludes that a concerted effort is now required to mainstream social research in the CGIAR system, and this cannot occur without the full support of the CGIAR donors, the CGIAR senior managers, and the centre boards and executive staff.

Abstract:
Community-based organizations (CBOs), including grassroots, voluntary organizations, are an important part of any strategy for addressing social determinants of health. Because of the challenges faced by CBOs, “enabling systems” may be needed to help them survive and fulfill their missions, and researchers have a variety of skills that allow them to play a role in such systems. The potential for researchers to play a role in supporting CBOs led the Seattle Urban Research Center (known as Seattle Partners) to establish a community research center (CRC) as one of its core projects. This article describes the operation of the Seattle Partners CRC and gives examples of how it has worked collaboratively with CBOs in providing technical assistance. The Discussion section draws from the CRC experience to examine the benefits and challenges of collaboration and the trade-off between capacity building and providing direct technical assistance in promoting long-term CBO viability.

Abstract:
AbstractSediment is an essential component of water and river systems. The anthropogenic alteration of sediment fluxes in the world’s rivers is one of the principal markers of the Anthropocene, the new geological epoch characterized by human influence at the planetary scale. In spite of its environmental and historical importance, water and river histories have surprisingly neglected sediment until recently. This introduction to the special issue “The Social Life of Sediment” argues for putting sediment at the center of social and historical inquiry and discusses the potential and value of such an approach. To do so, we introduce the concept of the “social life of sediment,” that is, the idea that the existence and movement of sediment is entwined with social needs, values, and activities, and needs to be appraised in his historical dimension. We review recent literature in fluvial geomorphology, social sciences, and history to assess to what extent the social and historical life of sediment has been taken into account. After this interdisciplinary review, we present the seven papers of the special issue and highlight their major insights to the study of social and historical lives of sediment. We conclude by outlining avenues for further research and by summarizing what we all can gain from putting sediment at the center of historical inquiries.

AbstractThe COVID-19 global crisis is reshaping Canadian society in unexpected and profound ways. The significantly higher morbidity and mortality risks by age suggest that this is largely a “gero-pandemic,” which has thrust the field of aging onto center stage. This editorial emphasizes that vulnerable older adults are also those most affected by COVID-19 in terms of infection risk, negative health effects, and the potential deleterious outcomes on a range of social, psychological, and economic contexts – from ageism to social isolation. We also contend that the pathogenic analysis of this pandemic needs to be balanced with a salutogenic approach that examines the positive adaptation of people, systems and society, termed COVID-19 resilience. This begs the question: how and why do some older adults and communities adapt and thrive better than others? This examination will lead to the identification and response to research and data gaps, challenges, and innovative opportunities as we plan for a future in which COVID-19 has become another endemic infection in the growing list of emerging and re-emerging pathogens.

Abstract:
Introduction: Previously published community health assessments (CHA) have explored social determinants of health in low-resource, Haitian-majority Dominican communities. The present CHA was conducted in Las Malvinas II, a Dominican-majority low-resource community, and represented a first step for developing a building a healthier community process. Method: A binational community–academic partnership adapted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s CHANGE (Community Health Assessment and Group Evaluation) guide to conduct a CHA through community-engaged, mixed-methods research. Data were collected on five community selected public health priorities (i.e., education, sanitation, unwanted pregnancies, chronic disease management, and vaccine-preventable diseases) and community assets through focus groups, interviews with key informants, and a household survey using GIS (geographical information systems) technology. Results: Of all five priorities, unwanted pregnancies and sanitation received the lowest average CHANGE tool ratings for both policies and Systems and Environment. However, data gathered on the five public health priorities reflect the perceived needs and assets of Las Malvinas II, and are equally important in improving the community’s health and well-being status. Community members identified as important goals the construction of a primary health clinic, as well as a bigger school, that includes pre-school and high school levels. Conclusion: A coalition emerged from the CHA to address the identified issues. The coalition used CHA findings to develop a community health improvement plan. The establishment of a primary health care center and a bigger school were identified as primary goals.

The University of Florida Levin College of Law Center on Children and Families addresses the instability many children face due to a wide range of challenges. They include poverty, violence, and the criminalization of youth of color. They also include inadequate health care, substandard educational opportunity, and the general failure of systems designed to support, protect, and treat children who are classified as dependent, delinquent, or otherwise in need. The Center's model rests on five premises that Professor Barbara Woodhouse and colleagues identified in their scholarship as essential for addressing crises rather than mitigating symptoms: curriculum, scholarship, conferences, advocacy, and clinics. Over the years, the Center has held numerous conferences to advance groundbreaking, practical research on family law and children's rights and has held youth summits in connection with those conferences to engage with youth on relevant legal issues. These efforts remain at the conceptual heart/core of the Center's work.

Abstract:
The post-pandemic crisis of contemporary housing, triggered by COVID-19, only but extends, to the entire world, many of the questions in which, permanently, housing is immersed within, in an ongoing crisis of developing countries. How to make houses more shareable, flexible, transformable, productive, participatory, livable, etc.? In that sense, by studying low-income housing in these countries, it is possible to analyze alternatives to the current dwellings, that arise from informality as a response to those questions shared worldwide today. This article describes part of a research carried out at Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil, which analyzes the physical and social transformations in consolidated informal dwellings within the city center. The techniques used, include planimetric surveys of case studies, interviews to users, and mapping out the use of the dwellings throughout the day. The analysis focuses on the interaction exerted between several nuclear families inside the dwelling and their objects. Thus describing a habitat transformational and production system linked to objects, where the dwelling is understood as a social system of objects and people, in continuous interaction and transformation.

Abstract:
Sustainability is a topic that is at the center of current discussions in the political, economic, social, and environmental fields. For its analysis, an integral and multidisciplinary vision is needed. This work aims to assess the sustainability of agricultural systems in Paraguay through a comparison applying SAFA (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems) indicators. The research focuses on 15 case studies on the territory of the Eastern Region of Paraguay divided into five classes of agricultural systems: agribusiness, conventional peasant family farming, agroecological peasant family farming, neo-rural farming, and indigenous agriculture. Data were collected through interviews with producers and key informants, direct observation, and scientific literature research in order to assess, through the SAFA Tool Software, the level of sustainability of each agricultural system as a whole and for each sustainability dimension (political, environmental, economic, and social dimension) in a comparative way. It has emerged that producers belonging to conventional peasant family farming, agroecological peasant family farming, neo-rural farming, and indigenous agriculture have achieved levels of sustainability that are similar to each other and very good in all four dimensions of sustainability. Meanwhile, agribusiness achieved moderate scores in the dimensions of governance and environmental integrity, and was good in the economic and social dimension.

Abstract:
Background The Appalachian population is distinct, not just culturally and geographically but also in its health care needs, facing the most health care disparities in the United States. To meet these unique demands, Appalachian medical centers need an arsenal of analytics and data science tools with the foundation of a centralized data warehouse to transform health care data into actionable clinical interventions. However, this is an especially challenging task given the fragmented state of medical data within Appalachia and the need for integration of other types of data such as environmental, social, and economic with medical data. Objective This paper aims to present the structure and process of the development of an integrated platform at a midlevel Appalachian academic medical center along with its initial uses. Methods The Appalachian Informatics Platform was developed by the Appalachian Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Division of Clinical Informatics and consists of 4 major components: a centralized clinical data warehouse, modeling (statistical and machine learning), visualization, and model evaluation. Data from different clinical systems, billing systems, and state- or national-level data sets were integrated into a centralized data warehouse. The platform supports research efforts by enabling curation and analysis of data using the different components, as appropriate. Results The Appalachian Informatics Platform is functional and has supported several research efforts since its implementation for a variety of purposes, such as increasing knowledge of the pathophysiology of diseases, risk identification, risk prediction, and health care resource utilization research and estimation of the economic impact of diseases. Conclusions The platform provides an inexpensive yet seamless way to translate clinical and translational research ideas into clinical applications for regions similar to Appalachia that have limited resources and a largely rural population.

Abstract:
This article examines the reasons why proprietary hospital chains have become interested in buying or managing academic health center hospitals. Among the explanations that are discussed are such factors as vertical integration of health care, chain legitimation, integration of finance and delivery systems, and short-term profit potential. These factors are further examined through the use of a structured analysis of the interpenetration of proprietary chain hospitals and academic medical centers. We also discuss the consequences of these linkages in terms of such issues as continued educational mission, types of sponsored research programs, degree of indigent care provision, and changes in the nature of physician and other health worker training. The larger social implications of the movement of proprietary chains into tertiary medical care are evaluated.

Abstract:
If an organization wishes to achieve social responsibility required by the consequences of neoliberal economic theory and practice of exploitation, it should follow the ideas of integral management and innovate its governance, management and practice towards social responsibility. In this paper, we research why social responsibility is needed, what it involves and how it is achieved, whereby as a lever for achieving it we propose to use the MER model of integral management and the Dialectical Systems Theory. We stem from the ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility, which puts the organizational governance (and the resulting organization management) at the centre of the seven core subjects for the achievement of social responsibility. ISO 26000 highlights the holistic approach and interdependence as key connecting merits, which are also part of the Dialectical Systems Theory. Our research has shown that in order to achieve social responsibility, organizations must primarily innovate their governance from its management and later the entire business practice is derived.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Social workers as members of interprofessional teams are important in treating the psychosocial sequela of trauma and burn injuries. However, the specific skills needed and roles of social workers on treatment teams can be confusing and poorly articulated not only by medical providers, but even among social workers themselves. This qualitative study was designed to increase both the breadth and depth of knowledge related to social work practice on interprofessional burn care teams. Methods Primarily qualitative methods were used to explore the roles of social workers employed on burn care teams. In addition to conducting individual interviews, brief surveys were collected from each of the social work participants (N = 11) focused on participant work environments and demographics. All qualitative interviews were transcribed verbatim to capture the perceptions of participants in their own words. Each interview was analyzed and coded by at least two research team members using NVivo 12 (QSR International, 2018). Analysis applied grounded theory strategies for inductive thematic approaches. Results Ten females and one male participated. All participants held some level of professional license and had a mean of 4.69 years of experience working in a burn center (range = 1–13 years). Themes and sub-themes derived between and across participant interviews were: “Skills” (building trust/rapport, thorough assessment of needs, support, communication, case management, trauma-informed therapy, and knowledge of medical terminology and burn treatment); “Challenges/Barriers to Treatment” (patient finances, lack of community providers knowledgeable in management of burn injuries, knowledge of available community resources throughout their catchment area, unstable social support systems, premorbid patient mental illness and substance abuse, inadequate insurance coverage, transportation insecurity, and the long-term nature of burn recovery); and “Resources” (Phoenix Society, SOAR, World Burn Congress, burn foundations, hospital programs, stable support systems, and resilience of burn survivors). Conclusions By gaining insight into the skills, barriers, and resources of social workers working in U.S. burn centers, treatment team members can better and more consistently understand, utilize, and support their current and/or incoming social workers. In addition, Master’s level academic programs can better prepare new social workers in how to best assist burn survivors and their families at both the inpatient and community level. Content related to the needed competencies can be incorporated into required social work courses and medical social work electives. Applicability of Research to Practice By establishing the requisite skills of burn center social workers, there will be opportunity for consistency through certification in burn care much like allied health providers.

Action Research (AR) has been widely utilized in Indigenous contexts because of its emphasis on social transformation and synergies with Indigenous research approaches. Yet, while AR is seen as an attractive option for working in Indigenous research contexts, additional efforts are needed to ensure that AR adequately interrogates collaborations between Western and Indigenous knowledge systems. The application of the principle of two-eyed seeing (TES), which refers to the process of seeing from the strengths of Indigenous ways of knowing with one eye while using the other eye to see with the strengths of Western ways of knowing (Bartlett, Marshall, & Marshall, 2012), can center decolonial goals, addressing the shortcomings of AR. Abstract:
e19220 Background: Many barriers exist to delivering comprehensive breast cancer care in low-income countries. We examined sociodemographic factors associated with treatment completion among women receiving care for breast cancer at Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence (BCCOE), Rwanda’s first public cancer facility. Methods: We retrospectively measured treatment completion rates in women with early and locally advanced breast cancer diagnosed at BCCOE between July 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016. We defined treatment completion as receipt of surgery, 4 cycles of chemotherapy, and initiation of hormonal therapy for estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer. We used logistic regression to examine associations between socio-demographic and clinical factors and treatment completion. Travel time was estimated using a geographic information systems model using the WHO tool AccessMod 5.0. Results: Of 212 eligible women, 138 (65%) had surgery and 141 (66%) received 4 cycles of chemotherapy. Among 139 women with ER+ cancer, 59% initiated hormonal therapy. Overall 56% received all indicated treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy (if ER positive); 44% did not complete indicated treatment. Women who lived closer to the hospital ( <50 minutes travel time) were more likely than other women to complete treatment (OR 4.2; 95% CI 1.1-15.1). Women with early-stage disease were also more likely than women with locally advanced disease to complete treatment (OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.1-4.4). Among 100 women with available information about ubudehe (Rwandan social categorization used as a proxy for socioeconomic status), rates of treatment completion were higher for women who were eligible for social support (ie: transportation support or insurance subsidy) than women who were not (74% v. 63%), although this difference was not statistically significant (p= 0.51). Conclusions: Significant barriers exist for breast cancer patients receiving treatment in this low resource setting; nevertheless, over half of the patients completed therapy. Interventions are needed to facilitate care for women with long travel times and locally advanced disease to reduce disparities in outcomes for this population of patients. Further research is needed to determine the role of social support in treatment completion.

Abstract:
In this article we discuss fairness in queues, view it in the context of social justice at large, and survey the recently published research work and publications dealing with the issue of measuring fairness of queues. The emphasis is placed on the underlying principles of the different measurement approaches, on reviewing their methodology, and on examining their applicability and intuitive appeal. Some quantitative results are also presented. The article has three major parts (sections) and a short concluding discussion. In the first part we discuss fairness in queues and its importance in the broader context of the prevailing conception of social justice at large, and the distinction between fairness of the queue and fairness at large is illuminated. The second part is dedicated to explaining and discussing three main properties expected of a fairness measure: conformity to the general concept of social justice, granularity, and intuitive appeal and rationality. The third part reviews the fairness of the queue evaluating and measuring approaches proposed and studied in recent years. We describe the underlying principles of the different approaches, present some of their results, and review them in context of the three main properties expected from a measure. The short discussion that follows centers on future research issues.

Bowen’s natural systems theory has been identified as a foundational theory in understanding family processes, and yet there is a lack of research examining the impact of counseling on Bowenian constructs of differentiation, emotional reactivity (ER), fusion, and “I” positions (IPs). In order to investigate this potential impact, the present study employed a pre–post quasi-experimental design, sampling 20 adults receiving outpatient counseling services for a 3-month period from a community mental health center in the Northeastern United States. The results revealed that participants demonstrated moderate to large statistically significant improvements in their overall differentiation of self, as well as in the dimensions of ER and taking IPs. However, there were no improvements in the dimensions of emotional cutoff and fusion with others. The results are discussed in relation to Bowenian theory as well as the common factors model.

Purpose Private club members belong to an organization where people with common interests, experiences, backgrounds and professions meet for social and recreational purposes. This study aims to examine the relationships among private club members’ perceptions of social media regarding perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, attitude toward social media involvement and behavioral intention toward social media usage. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was conducted among private club members across the USA (n = 571). The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings The findings of this study center on the perceptions of club members and their beliefs and attitudes associated with their social media usage behavior. This study extends the social media literature by supporting previous studies that suggest a causal flow from perceived ease of use to intrinsic and extrinsic motivations (perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment) based on a motivational model. Research limitations/implications This study is meaningful for revealing the perceptions of private club members and their beliefs and attitudes associated with their social media usage behavior. It is untested whether this study’s model applies to other hospitality businesses. Future research could examine other segments and add other variables such as perceived security and trust. Practical implications This study can provide private club managers, and the members of the clubs that they lead, with a better understanding of online social media. Originality/value This study is one of a few empirical online social media studies in the area of the private club industry. This study seeks to provide baselines regarding social media perceptions and usage in the hospitality literature by providing a comprehensive model.

e14105 Background: It has been recognized that current electronic medical record (EMR) systems detract from the patient-provider relationship and that an innovative technology is needed to re-center medical encounters on the patient-provider engagement. This is especially important in oncology during new patient onboarding, care coordination in between medical visits and survivorship planning. Methods: We built a HIPAA compliant role-based digital health platform to support providers in patient engagement and care coordination. In this pilot at a non-profit oncology center in India, nurse navigators onboarded the patients using the mobile application. The technology was used to digitize past medical records and parse the clinical history. In addition, self-reported patient past medical history, family history, as well as social, reproductive and surgical history was collected as needed. The system collated the information into an easy to consume case summary for the oncologists. The system was tested with 3 clinicians and consented cancer patients. Results: Nearly 200 cancer patients participated in the pilot study. Patients’ medical records were digitized by oncology nurse navigators. The summarized longitudinal view of the patient’s medical history was used by oncologists for diagnosis and treatment planning. Participating clinicians noted that the digital case summary saved time and effort in treatment planning. In addition, it was noted that collaboration between nursing staff, medical oncologist, surgical oncologist and radiation oncologist was substantially improved. Conclusions: We demonstrate the value of using digital health technology to support the care coordination of cancer patients in a low-resource, non-profit clinical center in India.

Abstract:
The extractive industry gets huge international consideration because of the way they discharge their ecological and social obligations. Despite the fact that mining sector ventures have numerous points of interest, wrong mining operations have prompted emotional environment and resources exhaustion. To accomplish a parity of such operations, sustainable programs are an absolute necessity and ought to be trailed by the business. Of the different feasible practices, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) has picked up conspicuousness as of late. The developed nations, CSR is at a propelled level, yet in emerging economies particularly in Africa, CSR is in a preparatory stage, because of both known and obscure reasons. This study researches drivers for CSR usage in the mining business in Ghana, a developing country in Africa. A few studies concentrated on CSR issues however were constrained to industrial points of view without considering multi-partners. This paper endeavors to bridge the gap by dissecting CSR drivers from the viewpoints of numerous stakeholders, including media, government and social organizations. The researchers propose a model system, showed with a contextual investigation from a Ghana Investments Promotion Center (GIPC). In light of these findings, businesses can build their chances of honing quality CSR in modern business behaviors. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the shaping of public libraries as an infrastructure for a sustainable public sphere through a comprehensive literature review. Design/methodology/approach In order to capture the whole picture of this research field, we utilize comprehensive review methodology. The major research questions are: first, to what extent have research topics regarding libraries as public sphere institutions expanded and diversified? Which theoretical perspectives inform research? Second, which challenges and topics does the research focus upon, such as: social inclusion and equal access to information; digital inequalities; censorship and freedom of expression; and access to places and spaces with a democratic potential and the role of libraries in that respect? Third, what influence has social media exerted on libraries in the context of the expanding digital world? Findings The authors identified mainly four themes regarding the public library and public sphere, such as: the importance of public libraries by using Habermas’s theory; the function of meeting places within the public library and setting those places in the center of the library in order to enhance and encourage democracy; the relationship between social inclusion and public libraries and its functions in current society such as diminishing the digital divide; and the emerging electronic resources and arena of SNS in public libraries and utilizing them to reach citizens. Originality/value Capturing the recent history of this research field through comprehensive review is valuable.

Abstract:
Purpose Large supermarkets, chain stores and enterprises with large-scale warehousing put forward higher standards and requirements for the automation and informatization of warehouses. As one of the fast-growing commercial supermarkets in China, the traditional warehouse management mode has restricted the rapid development of Yonghui Superstores to a certain extent. The purpose of this paper is to find out how the existing warehouse mode can be changed and to solve the existing problems of warehouse management of Yonghui Superstores. Design/methodology/approach This research puts forward construction of warehouse center, which is based on radio frequency identification (RFID) and sensor technology, then designs the model for receiving, storage, operations management, distribution and outbound to solve the existing problems of warehouse management of Yonghui Superstores. Findings What technologies should be adopted to meet storage requirements? How to monitor the storage environment in real time and improve the operation and management level of the warehouse? This study found that building a warehouse center based on RFID and sensor technology was a good solution. Research limitations/implications The Yonghui Superstores warehouse center model lacks corresponding simulation experiments, and the investment and income are difficult to estimate quantitatively. Practical implications This paper has designed and discussed the warehouse center model based on RFID and sensor technology, which provides a few references for the actual investment and construction of a warehouse center. In addition, the warehouse center model has strong generalized applicability and could be widely used in various enterprises. Social implications The warehouse center could improve the warehouse management level of Yonghui Superstores and change the traditional warehouse management mode. To some extent, it improves the enterprise flexibility of the market, which will be of great significance to improve business efficiency and enhance brand image and competitiveness. Originality/value This study takes Yonghui Superstores as a case to analyze the problems of warehousing management in detail and then designs a warehouse center based on RFID and sensor technology. The study discusses the location and distribution, software and hardware selection, benefits evaluation, significances and return on investment, which makes the warehouse center model versatile, technically feasible and economically applicable.

Abstract:
93 Background: Time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) can be used by health systems to identify inefficiencies and improve the patient experience in clinical encounters. This quality improvement project utilized a Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle to evaluate routine clinic-based care for women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Methods: A project plan was developed to directly observe the time spent by MBC patients in clinic (Plan). Patient clinical encounters could include a physician visit along with scans, infusion, and/or labs. We then created process maps of typical patient clinical experiences (Do). Next, we tabulated times (mean, standard deviation [SD]) that patients spent in waiting areas and with each clinical team member (physician, fellow, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, medical assistant, chaplain, social worker, pharmacist, navigator) to identify care inefficiencies (Study). Lastly, we discussed results with providers and identified and implemented strategies for improving efficiency (Act). Results: We directly observed clinic visits (n = 33) for MBC patients from November 2016 to June 2017. On average, patients spent 219 minutes (SD 108) at clinic visits including 71 minutes (SD 45) spent with clinical team members and 85 minutes (SD 43) spent in waiting areas. We identified several opportunities for efficiency improvement, including the delay prior to rooming by medical assistants (n = 31; mean 22, SD 20 minutes), delays with port lab draws in infusion (n = 5; mean 22, SD 13 minutes), and delays awaiting drug from pharmacy (n = 22; mean 15, SD 29 minutes). To improve efficiency, we implemented strategies including having a dedicated infusion nurse assigned to draw labs from patient ports and modifications to medical assistants’ workflow. Conclusions: In this PDSA cycle, we found that patients spend a substantial amount of time at clinic visits, and the majority of this time is spent in waiting areas. Our use of process mapping and evaluation of time spent receiving care identified important opportunities for improving care delivery and efficiency for patients with MBC.

Abstract:
This study explores ethical issues raised in providing medical care to participants and communities of low-resource settings involved in a Phase II/III pediatric malaria vaccine trial (PMVT). We conducted 52 key informant interviews with major stakeholders of an international multi-center PMVT (GSK/PATH-MVI RTS,S) (NCT00866619) in Ghana and Tanzania. Based on their stakeholder experiences, the responses fell into three main themes: (a) undue inducement, (b) community disparities, and (c) broad therapeutic misconceptions. The study identified the critical ethical aspects, from the perspectives of stakeholders, of delivering health care during a PMVT. The study showed that integrating research into health care services needs to be addressed in a manner that upholds the favorable risk–benefit ratio of research and attends to the health needs of local populations. The implementation of research should aim to improve local standards of care through building a collaborative agenda with local institutions and systems of health.

Abstract:
Abstract Healthcare costs are rising in industrialized countries, partly as a function of managing costly chronic care conditions associated with aging populations. Of roughly 3 trillion USD expended in the U.S., almost 90% is spent on those with chronic conditions. Technology is touted as one tool to manage healthcare efficiently. However, human factors research has shown that technological systems that do not take human capabilities into account will fail to be adopted, or if adopted, will be abandoned by users. The Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE) will describe research findings for four different facets of healthcare technology. Sara Czaja will provide an overview, describing technology for healthcare support. Caregiver needs are projected to rise rapidly, in part due to aging of the baby boom cohorts. We need new solutions for future generations of older adults as there will be insufficient numbers of caregivers to care for the increased number of older adults given changes in social structures. Wendy Rogers will discuss research on the design and use of televideo and robots to assist with healthcare. Neil Charness will discuss home monitoring technology, particularly practical issues around design, deployment, and maintenance, drawing on studies of heart failure patients and older adult controls. Walter Boot will discuss how gamification of healthcare interventions can help to address the adherence problem for behavior change. Scott Beach, Associate Director & Director of Survey Research Program, University Center for Social and Urban Research, University of Pittsburgh, will serve as discussant.

Abstract:
The mental health of young college students has always been a social concern. Strengthening the supervision of college students’ mental health problems is an important research content. In this regard, this paper proposes to apply fuzzy cluster analysis to the health analysis of college students and explore college students through fuzzy clustering. Explore the potential relationship between the factors that affect the health of college students, and this will provide a reference for the early prevention and intervention of college students’ mental health problems. In view of this, an improved fuzzy clustering method based on the firefly algorithm is proposed. First, the Chebyshev diagram is introduced into the firefly algorithm to initialize the population distribution. Then, an adaptive step size method is proposed to balance exploration and development capabilities. Finally, in the local search process, a Gaussian perturbation strategy is added to the optimal individual in each iteration to make it jump out of the local optimal. The process has good optimization capabilities and is easy to obtain the global optimal value. It can be used as the initial center of the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm for clustering, which can effectively enhance the robustness of the algorithm and improve the global optimization ability. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, comparative experiments were carried out on four datasets, and the experimental results show that the algorithm is better than the comparison algorithm in clustering accuracy and robustness.
