Abstract:
Historic cities are of special importance to all researchers; this is especially so when one considers that which is claimed to be the oldest city known in history, the city of Makkah. Makkah has represented the civilisation of its community throughout the ages, but. now we find that for economic or socio-cultural reasons, the city is facing considerable problems which could destroy its cultural value for future generations. This research has been prepared with a view to studying the housing situation in the old city of Makkah. An awareness of the types of problems and their effects on the urban pattern have led to the recommendation of appropriate measures of control. For this purpose, a large survey was carried out on 415 buildings and then analyzed using a computer. Three case studies were also discussed in detail. The main points considered in this research cover the problems of high vacancy rate around the Holy Mosque, the condition of the types of residential buildings, annual and Hajj rent values, the effect of Hajj on housing and the building design and the condition of the infrastructure services. Finally, this research looks at the housing issue in general, with regard to accommodation for the residents and pilgrims.

Abstract:
This study consists of a presentation and analysis of the experiences undertaken in São Paulo and Lisboa, concerning inner city urban rehabilitation, of physically degraded areas inhabited by low income households. It aims at pointing out from an institutional and operational perspective, the weaknesses and strengths, opportunities and constraints within the management of the rehabilitation processes, for their implementation by the municipal governments. Despite the particularities of each reality, it highlights similarities regarding the role performed by the housing universe as propulsive factor triggering the rehabilitation processes, their premises, and the conception of local field offices (GTL in Lisbon and EA in Sao Paulo), operating as a branch of the municipal governments for the coordination of the urban rehabilitation process. It outlines, as well, the importance of political and societal supports, and the adoption of an alternative institutional arrangement in the municipality, expressed in the creation of these local field offices, in order to promote a participatory and integrated approach in the urban rehabilitation planning and management. For this purpose, it seeks for elements in the Portuguese experience that could contribute to the reflection of the recent and insipient Brazilian experience.

Abstract:
A key consideration in the human migration process to a destination country is the need to secure suitable and affordable housing. As housing costs have increased in the United States in recent decades, mobile homes – also known as manufactured housing or "trailers" – have become a significant source of affordable housing for people living in the United States. In rural communities, mobile homes have become a substantial portion of the available housing stock. This research project explored mobile home living specifically in relation to Mexican migrants who lived in a rural county in central North Carolina. Consideration was given to the practical issues of this type of housing, as well as any influence the American stigma of mobile homes might have had on the ways people experienced their homes and communities.

This dissertation discusses the importance of the Housing Policy focused on Social Housing in the Center of São Paulo as a way of requalifying urban space, and especially as a guarantee of the right to housing and the right to the city, in the production of a more democratic and humane city. It addresses more specifically the performance of the Federal Housing Program Minha Casa Minha Vida in this area in Track 1, which serves lower-income families, based on the only three existing projects to date, made possible by the Unification of Tenement-Housing Struggles - ULCM, the oldest housing movement in action in Sao Paulo. From the professional experience in the process of feasibility and execution of work of these projects, discusses the operationalization of the Program, as well as its limits and possibilities, aiming at its improvement and contribution within a Housing Policy for the Center.

Abstract:
The object of this work is social housing in the downtown of São Paulo city, under three aspects: the problem of the knowledge development which involves the conceptions about citys growth and the housing problem; the elaboration and development of social housing programs, focused on 2001-2004 period; the municipal laws created to impulse the housing production, specially the Social Housing Especial Zones, type 3 (ZEIS 3). Our aim is to understand the relations between these three sides of the object, emphasizing the theoretical production influence on the city center social housing defense, that by itself, has influenced the effectiveness of housing programs and urban laws.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the current phase of capitalism urban interventions represent a determining factor in the strengthening and invigorating the system. Under this assumption, we chose a fragment of the Central Area of the city of Manaus, the Master of the Chico Largo, where he was deployed the first phase of an extensive redevelopment program, called PROSAMIM. In this sense, this research seeks to analyze the changes in urban space and life of the population, before the relocation of residents and the installation of urban equipment for carrying out the program. To analyze this process we use participatory research in the field work, where one hundred forms were applied in the following locations: Master bayou Chico and the surrounding area, government housing projects in the Central Area and on the outskirts of the city. The study provides a comparative view of the different realities experienced by residents and former residents of the study area with regard to housing and access to urban services and equipment. According to the information collected it was evident the use of a strategic discourse by the government, which leads to improved quality of life through poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. But these goals do not match the reality on grounds of the streams of the city and the apparent social inclusion of residents involved in the program, even with the new housing continued to be stigmatized as a function of the site of the old housing and the poor socioeconomic conditions that last in new housing.

Burger, Christine-Maria. "A descriptive study of conflict management strategies of the Johannesburg Central Methodist Church refugee community." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1301.

Abstract:
The growth of forced migration populations - i.e. the movement of people within and across national boarders as a result of conflicts, disasters, and development policies and projects - has been a defining feature of the twentieth century and will no doubt remain with us well into the twenty-first century (Rutinwa, 2001: 13). Literature searches suggest that the ‘refugee’ constitutes the most powerful label within the forced migration discourse. Published calculations regarding the number of refugees in the world at the end of 2008, range between 15.2 million (UNHCR, 2009: 2) and 13.6 million (World Refugee Survey, 2009: 33). The refugee experience of a small representative population of these figures namely, the Zimbabwean refugees living within the Central Methodist Church (CMC) or Central Methodist Mission (CMM) refugee community, in Johannesburg city centre is the concern of this treatise. From the perspective of the conflict management scholar, the informal and formal conflict management strategies adopted among and between the CMM refugees, have been studied. Analysis of existing literature, interviews conducted with the refugees, as well as hours of experience within the refugee community, substantiate the descriptive study that follows. Guided by the grounded theory approach, research findings have emerged out of the descriptions. The research findings in turn have founded the development of the recommendations that appear in the conclusion to the treatise.

Abstract:
This work is part of the debate on the challenges in ensuring inclusive housing for low-income population in central areas with real estate valuation and gentrification processes. This discussion is based on the analysis of the ZEIS 3 in Sao Paulo which, after ten years of it\'s implementation on the Master Plan 2002, had not achieved their objectives despite the instrument\'s potential, whether as a result of low production and inadequate use of ZEIS 3 by public administrations or due to legislation limitations. The Master Plan review held in 2014 brought important advances to the regulations on ZEIS 3, prioritizing lower income groups and directing public funds to acquire land for the production of HIS. However, there are still many challenges to be overcome related to the forms of access to housing and residence by the poor, and social control by the actors involved, issues that are central to production in ZEIS 3. Those points are identified in the analysis of the ZEIS 3 C 016 (Sé), inserted on the Nova Luz Project perimeter - study case of this work. Federal, state and local governments have used as political majority, if not exclusive, housing production via funding of private property. Meanwhile, the Social Rental Program has great potential to serve the most vulnerable population and prevent that public subsidies are transferred to the market and consecutively for higher income levels, nevertheless remains without investment. And the ineffectiveness of housing production to ensure not just access, but the permanence of the poor in well located areas, remains unchanged

Abstract:
After fifty years of challenges to the color line in Montgomery, Alabama, the Metropolitan Statistical Area is more integrated now than it was in 1950. Through exploring the effects of Brown v. Board of Education, the bus boycott, school integration court cases, re-segregation of schools in city and suburban districts, and federal open-housing policies, the volatile transformation appears to shows how, after fifty years, Montgomery has moved from a segregated dual society to a partially integrated society in spite of the massive resistance to integration.

Abstract:
The fact that there is a housing shortage in Stockholm is discussed regularly in the media today. Stockholm municipality owns about 70 percent of all land in the municipality and in the role as landowner, the municipality has the opportunity to influence where and what, within the municipality, there is to be built. In this paper, we have looked at the Norra Djurgårdsstaden project, Norra 2 and discovered that there are significant differences in how the city provides land for condominiums and tenancy apartments. We have in particular looked at how the land allocation and the pricing of the land have been made. In Stockholm municipality's land allocation policy from 2015 the municipality specifies four ways to grant land through land allocation. This policy also specifies the city that the tenancy apartments to have granted on leasehold. In this study we have looked at the differences and problems that can occur when tenancy apartments are granted the leasehold in a central location as Norra Djurgårdsstaden. Further on this paper discuss Stockholm municipality's new proposals on ground rents and what potential consequences for the construction of rental apartments in central Stockholm this proposal could have. We also discuss whether it is appropriate to grant leasehold rights for tenancy apartments in this kind of location in the city with the current rent setting system. Finally the paper brings up options for future applications that could allow different forms of tenure to compete for land in a more market oriented way.

Abstract:
Vertical Occupations in the City Center of São Paulo has been prepared as part of the Degree Project for the Master in Urbanism Studies course at The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. This Degree Project deals with social housing challenges in the central urban environment of São Paulo, Brazil, narrowing down to an important part of these urban challenges: the occupations of vacant buildings in the city center of São Paulo by social housing movements. Although the theme is part of a wider context, focusing on social occupations is critical to understand how the right to proper housing, and to the city itself, is a paradoxal universe.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the experiences of homeless movements claiming housing polices for people on low-income in the central area of the city of São Paulo. It inquires about to what extent their main strategy of pressure the squatting introduced new criteria for judging in discussions on the rehabilitation in the central area, which included the poor peoples rights to inhabit a consolidated region of the city. The investigation consisted of researches in literature, documents (newspapers and the movements archives) and field investigation (visit to the occupied buildings), as well as interviews with the coordinators of the homeless movements. More than 70 squatterisms in empty buildings and lands, public and private, which happened between 1997 and 2007, were identified. It also confirms the hypothesis that the homeless movements managed to express their demands, facilitate the assistance of a portion of its members in different lines of residential care and become protagonists in unprecedented programs for the remodeling and recycling of abandoned buildings for residential use in the central area. Nevertheless, despite these conquers, the posture of governmental agencies to face up to their demands alternated between, on one side, the use of institutional violence, which silences and disqualifies the forms of dissent, and, on the other side, the development of polices that remained away from the idea of universalization of rights.

When mankind began its relationship with nature, the space started to suffer transformations as a consequence of this interaction. The urban landscape of the cities, seen as a mixture of new and old spatial interventions and directly related to destructions, the modifications and possible vestiges of natural space appear as a scenario that must be studied, understood and diagnosed. “space deconstruction” stands right in the recovery of this totality, the essence of constructions and anthropic actions; as a new way of looking at the city we are producing. The present dissertation proposes to identify and classify the “free deconstructed spaces” of a perimeter selected from the central quadrilateral region of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil (the historical center of Ribeirão Preto), indicating likely areas to receiving possible occupations of social interest housing and urban public policy instruments that can motivate such actions and make them feasible. In light of this, analysis criteria were created based on the typologies of the “minimal deconstruction”, as a method to characterize and hierarchize these spaces. The results allowed us to identify requalification processes of central areas of the cities, while not only conserving a greater constructive and architectural patrimony, but also engaging them socially.

Lee, Ming-Da. "The perception of elderly respondents to the interior features of sheltered housing." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/2424.

Full text
Abstract:
As most elderly people are believed to spend the majority of their time indoors, the physical interior environment is likely to be of particular importance to them. Research relating to the concerns of elderly people and their perceptions has been subject to significant growth in recent times. This study, then, is concerned with acquiring knowledge of elderly people’s perceptions toward sheltered housing design. The principal aims are to examine and apply multi-methodologies to improve the effectiveness of data gathered from elderly respondents and to understand their perceptions of the interior environments they inhabit. Moreover, the purpose of the study is to determine the relative importance that the elderly attach to the various key interior elements and spatial areas within a sheltered housing scheme, in order to facilitate an improvement in these schemes as a whole. Initially, this thesis provides an introduction briefly explaining the motivation and background of the study along with the research aims and objectives. The related academic literature is then presented along with an outline of the background of each method used. Following this, the main research is detailed describing the four different methods, namely: Visual Record survey, Sketch Map survey, Detailed Recall survey and User-centred Conversational Tour, which are subsequently integrated with the goal of achieving more accurate and reliable results. Furthermore, the findings of the study established the priority of selected interior elements and spatial areas within the recent sheltered housing scheme, as assessed by elderly subjects. The design issues were summarised as the subjects’ perceptions of sheltered housing arrangements and their spatial design preferences. Indeed, they provide a provisional check list for the future design of residential environments for the elderly or modifications to existing facilities. In addition, the study provides a basic understanding of how elderly people observe unfamiliar spaces. More specifically, the results could be used to establish budget priorities relative to the building of new sheltered accommodation and should certainly be considered in the design or modification of residential environments for the elderly. The research was carried out by De Montfort University and in association with Leicester City Council Housing Department (LCC Housing Department). It was an investigation into elderly persons' perceptions of the interior environments of sheltered housing, with the intention of improving contemporary sheltered housing design. The facts presented and views expressed in this thesis are, however, those of the author and not necessarily those of the LCC Housing department.

Abstract:
Among the forms of organization one can observe in the ancient habitat, there is one particular structure that has been slightly ignored by French archeologists: the lesser urbanized settlements. However, in the last twenty years, small towns have attracted renewed interest.A historiographical study of the Gaul territory highlighted a less studied group of population: the ancient peoples of the Massif Central. In this thesis we intend to have a closer look at such populations as the Arvernes, the Vellaves, the Gabales, the Rutenes, the Cadurques, and the Lemovices from 1st century B.C. - 5th century A.D. We first established a corpus of sites starting with the study of the regional bibliography, which enabled us to create records for each area. We completed this first approach with several field operations such as ground, aerial, geophysical and topographical surveys. All those data were synthesized in a series of archaeological descriptors developed using the Archaeomedes model. The use of such descriptors enabled us to develop some statistical analyses and go beyond the simple reliability factor (which allows the distinction between rejected sites, hypothetical and true urbanized clusters). On the basis of our tested and proven classification, keeping in mind the suggested urban hierarchy and with the help of our spatial and morphological analyses, we were able to obtain a more complete picture of the urban framework of the ancient cities of the Massif Central. The data collected allowed us to better apprehend and understand the relation between such urban clusters and their natural environment, but also to place them in an archaeological context by studying the links between rural housing, the ancient administrative structure (chef-lieu), the city and territory limits, and the major communication routes (land and water). Through a multi-scale study of those population clusters, we were able to determine their general structure, to look at the role of local crafts and trade but also the place of major buildings, and waterworks. We took specific care to the chronological evolution in thosesmall towns by looking at them from their protohistoric beginnings through Antiquity and until early medieval times. While we cross-referenced all the different sources (bibliography and field surveys) and the analysis scales within the Massif Central, we also did a cross-comparison with other neighboring areas in order to validate such work. Besides the statistical data, we used the Geographic Information System and our database to reach our conclusions. This thesis aims at uncovering the reality of those ancient population clusters present in the Massif Central. Our results showed clearly the importance of those in the settlement system, their different forms structured according to the local geography and major trade routes. The functions/positions available in small towns were varied and recurrent but also corresponded to specific trades within each structure while remaining homogeneous.Through our chronological analysis we were able to point out a significant reduction in their numbers starting in the third century, though not their disappearing. In the 4th century new types of population clusters appeared, not as a response to an acute crisis, but more as a result of an evolution called on by new needs

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In the Brazilian city, popular housing such as cortiço or pensão are poorly studied in the academic geography field, because of the focus around the favela. This dissertation aims to fill this lack in scientific studies on housing. The cortiço could be defined as a popular, collective, multifamiliar, rented housing whose development happens in old neighborhoods, called “centrals” of Brazilian cities. It is a housing solution older than the favela, still having an important place in the urban landscape nowadays. In this dissertation, I chose to study the place of the cortiço in three different metropolitan contexts: São Paulo, Salvador de Bahia and Belém do Pará. This allows us to address the cortiço’s urban reality in its diversity. Also, we take an approach by the micro level, entering in the cortiços and in the quartos in order to meet the dwellers and gathering their discourses. The place of the cortiço – in the city and for its inhabitants – allows us to also develop the questions of the right to the city and the permanence of popular residential function in city cores

Moore, Natalie J. "Applying user-centred design to the service of installing renewable heating technology into UK social housing properties." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14485.

Full text
Abstract:
Global climate change and energy use have gained significance as principal issues in Government policy, with energy and carbon reduction targets becoming increasingly ambitious. The European Union have committed to a 20% reduction in both energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and for 20% of total energy supply to come from renewable sources by 2020, compared to 1990 levels. The UK has committed to a 34% cut in energy use within the same timeframe. The domestic sector accounts for over a quarter of all UK CO2 emissions and therefore poses an important area to address against the set targets. An overall stringent target has been set to reduce carbon emissions by 80%, against 1990 levels, by 2050 and it has been established that over two-thirds of the housing stock that will exist in 2050 is already built. Consequently, reducing household energy consumption and carbon emissions through retrofit measures is crucial. This doctoral research was carried out as part of a 3-year, interdisciplinary project Carbon, Control and Comfort (CCC) [EP/G000395/1]. The aim of the CCC project was to assist social housing tenants in reducing their energy use and carbon emissions associated with heating practices whilst maintaining comfort in the home. Technologies utilising renewable energy are progressively being introduced into social housing, particularly for the provision of heating and hot water. In order to meet carbon reduction targets, the uptake and installation of renewable technology needs to be successful and occupants must be able to use the technology effectively. This research investigated the service of installing heat pumps into social housing properties, from both the landlord s experiences and tenant s experiences, with particular emphasis on the implications for older tenants, a key group of users. It aimed to develop an understanding of the service delivery from the tenants interactions with the landlord and the heating system, sought to identify any need for improvement of this experience and propose measures to address these issues. Adopting a user-centred design approach, this research was conducted over three main phases comprising three empirical studies. A first exploration study investigated the current situation of heat pump installations in UK social housing and the experiences of both landlords and tenants during this process. Through this understanding, the needs and wants of both landlords, as the service provider, and tenants, as the service recipient, were identified and potential areas that could be addressed to improve the service emerged. Key requirements for improved information, particularly relating to the introduction of the technology and its control, were identified from reviewing current service delivery processes. A second study was carried out with stakeholders on both sides of the service, as a continuation of the user-centred design approach, to develop user requirements and ascertain the ways in which these key areas could be addressed. A set of recommendations was formed for the identified measures to improve the service. A particular key measure was prototyped, based on the requirements extracted from the first exploration study and further developed in the second study. This enabled an evaluation to be carried out through a third study, with end users assessing the prototype. This applied the final stage of the user-centred design process to the key touchpoint of the service delivery focused on as a result of the research, prior to implementation or further work. As a final part of this thesis, the author reflected on the research undertaken against the aim and objectives set out at the beginning of the thesis. The discussion of the research at the end of the thesis indicated where contributions to knowledge lie. Firstly, this is evident in the greater understanding of heat pump installations in UK social housing this research provides an insight into and what may improve this service. The resultant recommendations for improvements to the service delivery provide a new contribution to the area. Secondly, applying user-centred design to the service delivery of installing heat pumps into social housing is a new way of approaching the design of this service process. In a relatively immature area of industry, installations to date have been heavily focused on the technical aspects of the system and so this research provides a valuable insight into the human aspects of the service delivery.

Abstract:
The content of the thesis is an architectural study of the temporary accommodation of migrants and finding a suitable location on the territory of the city of Brno. The choice of land suitable for construction must meet not only the technical requirements but also take into account the sensitive public relation to this type of equipment. The location of the Malměřice-Obřany district in Brno, currently managed as a brownfield, meets all the requirements and contributes to the reclamation of urban space.
