Abstract:
This book examines the complex ways in which Latino immigrants root themselves in new places while navigating the terrain of US social hierarchies and relationships with African American neighbors. In particular, the study looks at neighborhood change in South Los Angeles, which has shifted from predominantly African American to Latino. The authors ask the following questions: How did Latino immigrants and their children make a new home for themselves in South L.A.? What kinds of relations did they develop with African Americans, and how did this change over time? And what are the consequences for civic engagement and for cross-racial community organizing? The book draws on a multiyear, mixed-method project conducted by a team of ten researchers, and it is based on nearly two hundred audio-recorded, transcribed interviews, which were conducted in homes, garages, parks, offices, and urban gardens (one hundred with Latino residents, twenty-five with Black residents, twenty-nine interviews with civic leaders, and another forty-four with Latino and Black men at public parks and community gardens), as well as new databases charting historical demographic change. Taken together, this book provides both an intimate, close-up window into how people experience urban life and race on the streets, in schools, and in homes, and it scopes out to consider change over time, providing a broader view of new civic collaborations and political projects, race and place identities. The picture that emerges challenges traditional views of assimilation, identity formation, and urban politics and emphasizes a perspective highlighting immigrant homemaking, racial-identity transformation, and the production of Black/Brown collaborations in politics and placemaking.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the impact of the Great Depression on the Chicago real estate market. The gravity of the Depression can be understood by what was not built. For instance, Walter Ahlschlager had planned a massive complex of office towers, showrooms, lodging, and leisure facilities known variously as Crane Tower, Chicago tower, and the Apparel Mart. Announced by a group of apparel executives in June 1928, the scheme proposed a seventy-five-story setback tower atop a base that was to span railyards between the extended Randolph Street and Wacker Drive. However, nothing more was heard of the project after the October crash. The idea of a city rising above the Illinois Central yards attracted other schemes but no serious investment until after 1950.

Abstract:
The workshop documentation was developed as part of the inter-university project "Participatory development of indicators of sustainability. A contribution to a process-oriented sustainability strategy ". It was carried out at the beginning of March 2000 to April 2001 by scientists from the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Politik, HWP), the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (Universität der Bundeswehr) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie). The workshop documented here took place on March 23, 2001 at the University of the German Armed Forces. The project team presented its work results to an audience from science and practice for discussion. Participants included representatives from companies, government departments at state and municipal level, educational institutions, consulting companies, statistical offices and associations, universities and research institutions from social, engineering and natural sciences disciplines. They came from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. The documentation contains the lectures of four project participants, in which central results of the project are presented, and corrections by external scientists and experts. A summary of the discussion follows.

Clavel, Damian. Créer un pays, le royaume de Poyais. Gregor MacGregor, emprunts d’État et fraude financière 1820-1824. Éditions Livreo-Alphil, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.33055/alphil.01541.

Full text
Abstract:
Or, Poyais n’existe pas.

CAWS, Catherine, Marie-Josée HAMEL, Catherine JEANNEAU, and Christian OLLIVIER.

Full text
