Abstract:
Abstract This study presents the first microsatellite DNA study of population structure of Pacific hake, Merluccius productus (also known as Pacific whiting) within the Salish Sea, which has been identified as a distinct population segment under the US Endangered Species Act and is currently listed as a federal Species of Concern. In contrast, a separate coastal stock component of Pacific hake represents the most abundant commercial groundfish species on the US West Coast. We surveyed variation at 10 microsatellite DNA loci in a total of 655 individuals from three Salish Sea locations (Port Susan (PTS) and Dabob Bay in Washington and south-central Strait of Georgia (SOG) in British Columbia), three coastal locations (two off southern California and one in the Gulf of Alaska), and the Northern Gulf of California (GOC), México. No significant differences were detected among temporal samples from both PTS and SOG locations. Multilocus measures of population subdivision between coastal and Salish Sea populations (all pairwise FST ≥ 0.03) and between PTS and SOG populations (FST ≥ 0.01) suggest a moderate degree of demographic isolation among these spawning populations. No significant genetic differences were found among the three coastal Pacific hake samples; however, Pacific hake from the GOC were significantly differentiated from both coastal (FST > 0.05) and Salish Sea (FST ≥ 0.03) Pacific hake. Correlations between genetic and geographic distance showed that Pacific hake display a very strong isolation by distance signal, both over the whole study area (∼4500 km; r2 = 0.94) and within the Salish Sea (∼280 km; r2 = 0.72). This study suggests that PTS and SOG populations are to some extent demographically isolated from each other.

Abstract:
Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW, Orcinus orca) may be found year round in the Salish Sea. These orcas comprise three matrilineal pods (J, K, and L) and were listed as Endangered under the Canadian Species at Risk Act in 2003 and under the United States Endangered Species Act in 2005 because of prey scarcity, vessel noise and disturbance, small population size, and exposure to toxins. Since 1993, the Whale Museum has been operating Soundwatch, a boater education program for vessels. Soundwatch personnel are on the water in the central Salish Sea throughout the summer educating boaters on how to maneuver near marine mammals legally and documenting vessel regulation violations and marine mammal presence and behaviour. Starting on 24 July 2018, Soundwatch documented an adult female SRKW of J pod (J35) carrying a dead neonate calf. J35 continued to carry her dead calf for 17 consecutive days covering ~1600 km. Her story riveted the attention of the people of the Salish Sea as well as people around the world, evoking empathy for J35 and her loss as well as the plight of the Endangered SRKW population. Here, we tell her story and evaluate whether the behaviour J35 displayed toward her dead calf was an example of epimeletic behaviour, animal grief.

Abstract:
Despite increasing concern with the effects of archaeological data recovery methods on the types and quantity of objects extracted from the material record, archaeologists rarely discuss recovery biases attributable to the most basic excavation procedures. In this study I examine how several factors, including variable artifact identification skills, can affect artifact recovery rates in the field. Data from household-level investigations at the Stó:lō (Coast Salish) village of Welqámex (DiRi 15) are presented to show how interobserver variation can compromise interpretations of past behavior when opportunities for artifact recovery are limited to observations at the excavation unit and single-episode (field-only) sieving. Laboratory sorting of screen residue retained in 3.2-mm (one-eighth-inch) mesh sieves is shown to account for the recovery of as much as 87.5 percent of lithic artifacts and nearly 90 percent of archaeofaunal remains. Rates of artifact recovery in the field are highly variable among excavation crews working at Welqámex, and I argue that the application of correction factors is inappropriate unless the magnitude of recovery bias can be measured for specific excavation teams and particular depositional contexts. The results of this study further highlight the importance of documenting and mitigating the unintended effects of methodological decisions on archaeological assemblages.

Abstract:
In this paper, we examine two markers of verbal plurality, C1C2 reduplicationand ablaut, in PayPaju8@m, a Central Salish language. C1C2 reduplicationmarks event external pluractionality, where subevents are distributed in both spaceand time. It also applies in the nominal domain creating a plurality of individuals, butdoes not impose temporal or spatial distribution in the nominal domain. FollowingHenderson (2012, 2017), we propose that events are individuated through their temporaland spatial traces, so that events distribute in order to pluralize, whereas thisis not required in the nominal domain. Ablaut marks event-internal pluractionalitywhere subevents are grouped into a larger whole (Wood 2007; Henderson 2012,2017). While ablaut pluractionals typically involve numerous subevents that areclosely spaced in time, they can involve as few as two subevents and do not requirestrict adjacency of all subevents. We propose that they denote an atomic groupevent that is mapped to a plurality of events via a membership function (Barker1992). This contrasts with event-internal pluractionals that require a high number oftemporally adjacent subevents and have been analyzed as being grouped throughtheir temporal configuration (Henderson 2012, 2017), indicating that there is morethan one way to group events, just as there is more than one way to group individualsin the nominal domain (Barker 1992; Henderson 2012, 2017).

Abstract:
Whether or not traditional centralized leadership existed among the central Coast Salish of the Gulf of Georgia-Puget Sound Regions is a topic of ongoing interest and debate among archaeologists, social anthropologists, ethnohistorians, and Aboriginal communities. Recent findings in the lower Fraser River Canyon of British Columbia of a unique class of archaeological site—rock fortifications, newly identified on the Northwest Coast—present an opportunity to address this discussion. Description of these features and analysis of their situation within the physical and social landscapes of the Fraser Canyon provides insight into the nature of Stó:lō warfare and defensive strategy. I propose the existence of a multivillage defensive network aimed at regulating access to the entire “Canyon watershed” rather than simply defending individual settlements. I present a “corporate family group” model of sociopolitical organization through which this defensive system operated—representing a minimum level of intercommunity governance traditionally known to the Sto:Lō of the Gulf of Georgia Region. This proposition provides an alternate view to the long-held belief that individual households were the traditional centers of economy, and by extension, of political authority among the Aboriginal peoples of the Northwest Coast. These results affect the current understanding and reconstruction of traditional expressions of Stó: Lō identity engrained in sociopolitical organization.

Abstract:
#396 ABSTRACT The Environmental Unit (EU) is an important central function in the Incident Command System (ICS) within which key decisions are made and timing of certain critical response decisions is driven or influenced. Examples include such issues as managing waste, determining divisions, sharing data on resources at risk, establishing a shoreline assessment program, setting response treatment priorities, and determining treatment endpoints which in most cases sets the timing for when an active response is considered complete. Additionally, the EU serves as a central hub or nexus for many of the key sections and units within ICS, as many of the issues and work done within the EU are cross-cutting and involve components from the Operations Section, Planning Section, Logistics, Command Staff (Liaison and Safety Officers), etc. The unique nature of the EU provides a prime opportunity to train ICS concepts and good practices of implementation by focusing training on the EU and how it functions. The primary structural elements of ICS, including the Planning P cycle, the development of an Incident Action Plan, management by Objectives, development of Strategies and Tactics from those Command Objectives, making recommendations based on command priorities, and many more can be illustrated through targeted EU training. In the Salish Sea region of North America, there is close interaction between the key response agencies at the Federal and State/Provincial levels to prepare for transboundary responses by aligning response methods and practices. This coordination focuses to a great degree on cross-training on ICS: its structure and functions and more importantly its implementation. To that end, several Canadian and U.S. agencies have been coordinating for a number of years on providing joint, international ICS EU training for its responders on both sides of the border, with the goal of aligning ICS implementation. This joint international EU training program started in 2011 and has progressed since. This paper will examine other examples of this training program and identify some of its benefits, such as helping drive policy development on both sides of the border; and will highlight some case studies of responses where this training facilitated EU functions. This paper will also identify some challenges remaining in the differences between how ICS is implemented between these two nations, in particular the concept of the Science Table in the Canadian ICS implementation, and some suggestions for improvements moving forward.

Abstract:
For the state of Washington's one-hundredth birthday, in 1989, Native peoples there decided to revive a distinctive mode of transportation—long-distance journeys by canoe—along with an entire culture associated with it. Born as the "Paddle to Seattle," during the past two decades these canoe journeys have become a summertime staple for Native peoples as well as for thousands of non-Indians who follow the "pullers" in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. The Tribal Canoe Journey has become a metaphor for community, drawing peoples together over a large area. The annual Canoe Journey also represents a revival of indigenous culture and, to some extent, indigenous languages. The canoe journeys (and the land-based events associated with them) might be compared with powwows in other areas. The carving of canoes has been revived, along with the structures of canoe families that maintain them, along with songs, clothing, and other aspects of traditional culture. The Tribal Canoe Journey is neither a race nor a contest, although it is something of a feat of physical endurance, recalling a time when canoes were one of the central attributes of Coast Salish cultures. Canoes were vital for the gathering of much of people's food, the conduct of social relations, and the waging of war. Like many maritime peoples around the world, seaborne transport framed culture and invoked deep spiritual beliefs in life and death. Canoe culture also teaches respect for ancestors' survival skills to city-bred youth, forging bonds between generations. Young people are learning how to get along with others and how to stay clean and sober during journeys in which they represent their peoples. The young people also learn how to deal with conflicts that arise from living in close quarters and pulling canoes for hours at a time, day after day. The Tribal Canoe Journey thus revives culture while sustaining and improving modern Native life in the Pacific Northwest.

Abstract:
Arid and semi-arid regions face the risk of soils and aquifers salinization. Rainy events are rare which is characteristic of these regions. They play a significant role in the leaching of salts from topsoil to deeper layers, which increases the risk of aquifers salinization. For this reason, a plot was selected in the semi-arid region of Bou Hajla (Central Tunisia). The simulation of water and salts dynamics was carried out by Hydrus-1D. Model calibration was realised on a flood irrigation experiment during 10 days and in a depth of 4 m. The hydrodynamic parameters were determined by inverse modelling. Model validation was performed successfully during 577 days. The simulation of water and salts dynamics has allowed the analysis of two scenarios: (i) the effect of a very rainy event (> 50mm/day) on the dynamics of salts. This type of event allows leaching of the accumulated salts in the topsoil which promotes their burial in the depth; (ii) the long-term evolution of the saline profile in 20 years showed the cyclical nature of salts leaching in the topsoil, the permanent accumulation of salts in the depth of around 2 m, and a continuous leaching in the deeper layers (around 4 m), which may increase groundwater contamination risk.

This paper seeks to articulate the understanding of transactional/reader-response as theory and its use in the language classroom as both teaching philosophy and pedagogy. First, I map the terrain of reader-response theory, its history, in general, and how it has been articulated in literary studies, in particular. Next, I briefly synthesise studies that sought to empirically study reader response in the classroom and question why these inevitably fail to engage meaningfully with it - and seem to instead only result in teacher “lesson plan” ideas. I offer a case study of a language student’s responses to the novel Season of Migration to the North (Salih, 2009) to argue that reader-response should be central to teaching philosophies that hope to centre learners in inclusive educational processes.

Abstract:
The history of crime, penal policy and policing is currently enjoying a vogue — and not least fashionable among the topics under discussion has been the question of the nineteenth-century English ‘criminal class’, the origins of the term and its social significance. Critics are divided more or less equally into quantifiers and phenomenologists, optimists and pessimists about real trends. Few are the questions about the known facts but no agreement appears in sight on the subject of their interpretation. The principal reason for disagreement, as it appears to the present writer, is the central dominance of predicative, mono-thematic perspectives and explanations — any of which will fit the facts quite well but all of which seem insusceptible to conclusive proof. First let us consider the range of dispute among the phenomenologists — each of whom may also be characterized as a univer-salist, in the sense that they seem to believe the possible range of criminal events illimitable and the figures on crime merely a reflection of external social reactions rather than evidence of any upward or downward trend in measurable events.

Abstract:
Root-knot nematodes (RKN) cause important production losses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the world. Together with Meloidogyne graminicola Golden and Birchfield 1965, M. oryzae Maas, Sanders and Dede, 1978 and M. salasi López, 1984 have been causing damages in irrigated rice fields in Central and South America. In addition, six other RKN species may occur in rice fields in other regions of the world. Correct identification of Meloidogyne spp. is difficult but essential for the management of rice RKNs. The objective of this study was to develop some species-specific molecular markers for the diagnosis of South American RKN rice-related species. Isozyme phenotypes indicated the occurrence of some RKN species in the Brazilian samples, namely M. graminicola, M. oryzae, M. javanica, and two cryptic species designated as Meloidogyne sp. 2 and Meloidogyne sp. 3. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of 16 isolates revealed interspecific genetic polymorphism between Meloidogyne spp., but isolates belonging to the same species (i.e., sharing the same esterase phenotype) always clustered together, whatever the species considered. Specific SCAR markers of 230, 120, and 160 bp were developed for M. graminicola, M. oryzae, and M. salasi, respectively. These SCAR markers may be potential molecular tools for application in routine diagnostic procedures subject to their validation with other rice RKN field populations in the world.

Abstract:
In a tweet posted on 29 March 2018, a bidūn activist—who was later jailed from July 2019 to January 2020 for peacefully protesting against the inhumane conditions under which the bidūn are living—shared a video. The brief video zooms in closely on an ID card, recognizable as one of those issued to the bidūn, or long-term residents of Kuwait who are in contention with the state regarding their legal status. More precisely, the mobile phone camera focuses on the back of the ID card, on one line with a special mention added by the Central System (al-jihāz al-markazī), the administration in charge of bidūn affairs. Other magnetic strip cards hide the personal data written above and below it. A male voice can be heard saying that he will read this additional remark, but before even doing so he bursts into laughter. The faceless voice goes on to read out the label in an unrestrained laugh: “ladayh qarīb … ladayh qarīna … dālla ʿalā al-jinsiyya al-ʿIrāqiyya” (he has a relative … who has presumptive evidence … suggesting an Iraqi nationality). The video shakes as the result of a contagious laugh that grows in intensity. In the Kuwaiti dialect, the voice continues commenting: “Uqsim bil-Allāh, gaʿadt sāʿa ufakkir shinū maʿanāt hal-ḥatchī” (I swear by God, it took me an hour to figure out the meaning of this nonsense), before reading the sentence again, stopping and guffawing, and asking if he should “repeat it a third time,” expressing amazement at its absurdity. The tweet, addressed to the head of the Central System (mentioned in the hashtag #faḍīḥat Sāliḥ al-Faḍāla, or #scandal Salih al-Fadala), reads: In lam tastaḥī fa-'ktub mā shaʾt (Don't bother, write what you want).

Abstract:
Purpose This paper is based on three social scientific studies of animal welfare and local food products in Norway, of which two focussed on sheep in particular. It addresses the widespread belief that Norwegian sheep farming is “the best” but is confronted with a meat industry that emphasises economic efficiency. A few years after a new Norwegian law on animal welfare acknowledged animals as sentient beings came into force in 2010 (LOVdata, 2009), the purpose of this paper is to better understand ongoing debates on the welfare of sheep by exploring how sheep welfare is understood and regulated in Norway. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical framework draws on convention theory, especially referring to the four “possible worlds of production” (Salais and Storper, 1993). The authors argue that animal welfare may be analysed in parallel to product quality, focussing on three major perspectives of sheep welfare: animal treatment, product quality, and an abstract conceptualisation in public discourse. The empirical analysis is based on interviews with key players in the sector and central documents. Findings Convention theory points to several general difficulties in reaching an agreement on what is “good quality” and welfare. First, the authors find difficulty in how to implement new regulatory conceptualisations with dominant ways of understanding welfare within the industry. Second, the idealised images of sheep welfare of an immaterial possible world dominating public discourse have very little interaction with the real world of farms and abattoirs. Originality/value This paper suggests that rather than addressing and handling the potential tension between the legal recognition of animal as sentient being and the economic demands of the industry, key actors keep the potentially conflicting understandings apart in different “worlds of production” (Salais and Storper, 1993). Nevertheless, the authors observe that interactions between possible worlds, as well as translation from one possible world to another, not only could be promising but would be fundamental to concretise improvements in the real world.

Abstract:
Manipulation is a discursive phenomenon used by speakers to affect the thoughts ( and indirectly the actions) of the recipients. This study is concerned with manipulation in two political speeches; one in English delivered by the American President Donald J. Trump, while the other in Arabic delivered by the Iraqi President Barham Salih to be the study's data. Each one of these two speeches is divided into serial-numbered extracts( henceforth Ext.). The study aims at investigating the semantic and rhetorical devices utilized as manipulation strategies in these speeches. To this end, the qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis will be followed in this study. The significance of the study stems from how the ideological dimension based on bettering off the speaker's image and derogating others' image plays a vital role in the political speeches. This study draws on Van Dijk's ideological approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of political discourse, and accordingly, it is adopted as a model. Results revealed that both speakers use lexicalization, a list of three, repetition, and citing as effective techniques in their two speeches to affect their recipients' minds. The study concluded that the ideological framework of "positive self-presentation" and "negative other-presentation" is the central umbrella under which manipulation can exist and work freely. The findings might help linguists and political analysts to understand how politicians use the linguistic features in their discourse to affect the audience's thoughts and behaviors manipulatively.

The value of interaction cannot be overstated when analyzing variables that project a good relationship between companies and their future clients. A company's marketing contact mechanism must be regulated for both successful effectiveness and product promotion in order for it to survive in this fierce rivalry. In this paper, secondary data were used. The correlation coefficient was used to interpret the results, and the hypothesis was evaluated using the normal distribution. The review shows that the use of promotions as part of a blend has helped Lada Uzbekistan Company not only increase exposure but also sales; therefore, it is a worthy endeavor that should be made a central feature of the company's marketing policy. The recommendation for the Lada Uzbekistan Company is to review the various advertising mix components and choose those that can effectively produce product demand while still increasing sales in order to achieve corporate goals.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Calpionellid study has provided new evidence of early and late Tithonian age of the top of the Gintsi Formation, and of late Tithonian and early Berriasian age of the Glozhene Formation in the Yavorets section (Western Balkan Mts, Bulgaria). The calpionellid Chitinoidella, Praetintinnopsella, Crassicollaria, and Calpionella zones have been documented in successive order. Three calcareous dinocyst zones – Colomisphaera tenuis, Colomisphaera fortis and Stomiosphaerina proxima, have been determined in this lower Tithonian to lower Berriasian interval. From the base upwards, the following microfacies have been recognized: Saccocoma (Gintsi Formation, lower and upper Tithonian), Globochaete alpina, and calpionellid (Glozhene Formation, upper Tithonian and lower Berriasian). The base of the Berriasian has been traced at the explosion of the uniformly shaped spherical variety of Calpionella alpina. Evolutionary lineages of species of the genus Calpionella are discussed, as well as the vertical distributions and abundance peaks of crassicollarians. The calpionellid zones described herein are correlated with coeval zonations from the Western, Central and Eastern Tethyan domains. The regional correlation with previously studied sections of Tithonian/Berriasian pelagic carbonates in the Western Balkan Mts revealed a transition to hemipelagic deposition of the limestone-marl succession of the Salash Formation and/or sandstone accumulation during the middle to late Berriasian (Elliptica and Simplex calpionellid subzones) due to unstable conditions of the sedimentary environment. From the west to the east in the Western Balkan Unit (i.e., from the Rosomač section in eastern Serbia to the Sarbenitsa, Bov and Yavorets sections in the Iskar River Valley area), there is a trend of slight progressive deepening of the basin. This is manifested in the occurrence of redeposited shallow-carbonate-platform microfossils in the west to greater thickenesses of the Gintsi and Glozhene formations and occurrence of sandstone channel deposits in the east.

Abstract:
A diverse Upper Triassic tropical marine fauna from northwestern Sonora, Mexico, includes 31 taxa of tropical invertebrates including scleractinian corals, spongiomorphs, disjectoporoids, “hydrozoans,” thalamid and nonthalamid sponges, spiriferid and terebratulid brachiopods, gastropods, bivalves, coleoids, and anomuran microcoprolites. They occur within the late Karnian to Norian part of the Antimonio Formation (Antimonio terrane), which is juxtaposed against a fragmented portion of the North American craton. Most of the fauna is also known from the Tethys region. Sixteen Sonoran taxa co-occur in the western Tethys and five have never been known outside this region. Four additional taxa (one identified only at genus level) are geographically widespread. Some taxa occur in displaced terranes of North America, especially in west-central Nevada (Luning Formation). A weak link exists with the California Eastern Klamath terrane but stronger ties exist with Peru. Among Sonoran sponges,Nevadathalamia polystomawas previously recognized only from the Luning Formation, western Nevada. SpongesCinnabaria expansa, Nevadathalamia cylindrica, and a coral,Astraeomorpha sonorensisn. sp., are also known from Nevada. The coralsDistichomeandra austriaca, Chondrocoenia waltheri, Pamiroseris rectilamellosa, andAlpinophyllia flexuosaco-occur in central Europe. Two new taxa, a spongiomorph hydrozoan,Stromatoporidium lamellatumn. sp., and a disjectoporoid,Pamiropora sonorensisn. sp., have distinct affinities with the Tethys. The geographically widespread North American brachiopod,Spondylospira lewesensis, andPseudorhaetina antimoniensisn. gen. and sp. are among the Sonoran fauna. The Sonoran coleoid (aulacocerid)Dictyoconites(Dictyoconites) cf.D. reticulatumoccurs in the Tethys realm andCalliconitescf.C. drakeiis comparable with a species from the Eastern Klamath terrane.Calliconites millerin. sp. is the first occurrence of the genus outside Sicily. The bivalvesMyophorigonia jaworskii, M. salasi, andPalaeocardita peruvianaare known from Sonora and Peru. Eight gastropod taxa includeGuidoniacf.G. intermediaandG.cf.G. parvula, both previously known from Peru, andEucycloscala subbisertusfrom the western Tethys. The gastropods are unlike those already known from other North American terranes.

ESTIMATE OF WATER DEMAND AND AREA IRRIGATED BY CENTRAL PIVOT IN THE STATE OF ESPÍRITO SANTO 2 ABSTRACT The generation of information on the scenario of irrigated agriculture, represents an important primary source for inspection and planning of management of water resources. Thus, the present study aimed to quantify the number of central pivots in the State of Espírito Santo and their respective irrigated area, aiming to estimate the water volume (m³) required to supply water demand in these areas. A 1: 1,000 photointerpretation was performed to identify the equipment. With a historical series of data, potential monthly evapotranspiration (ETP) was estimated and then a water balance was elaborated. The data were spatialized by krigagem, forming twelve maps, guaranteeing the determination of the monthly value of water deficit or surplus (mm) for each coordinate, making it possible to estimate the volume of water required to meet demand. A total of 276 central pivot units were irrigated, irrigating an area close to 12,991.76 ha, requiring an annual irrigation of 33,694,344.50 m³. The Northern Macroregion concentrates 80.85% of this total irrigated area in the State and accounts for 89.52% of water demand, especially the municipality of Pinheiros. The Itaún River Interbank Basin corresponds to 80.42% of the water demand. In May and June water complementation needs were superior. Keywords: irrigation, photointerpretation, water resources.

Abstract:
The annual conference of the British Society for Middle EasternStudies (BRISMES) was hosted by the Department of Middle EasternStudies at the University of Manchester and concentrated on thetheme of "Culture: Unity and Diversity." About two hundred participantsdeliberated over approximately ninety papers of varying standards,in addition to the three plenary sessions. This was achieved bygrouping the speakers, many of whom were from overseas, intothirty-four panels covering such diverse themes as law, politics, language, literature, poetry, culture, identity, history, religion, architecture, mysticism, media, economics, and agriculture. A balance wasalso maintained between the historical and the contemporary in manyof these areas. Each session. featured up to five panels, each withbetween two and four speakers. These were held simultaneously inorder to give all of the participants in each session the opportunity tochoose the one panel that would be of most interest to them. Some ofthe panels were hosted by special interest groups: The Society forMoroccan Studies; The Association for Cypriot, Greek and TurkishAffairs; The Manchester University Research Group on Central Asiaand the Caucasus; and two panels in memory of Avriel Butovsky. The focus of the conference's attention was the plenary session oneach of the three days. A different guest speaker was present for eachsession. The most striking presentation was that of Seyyed HosseinNasr (George Washington University, USA). The opening plenaryaddress was by Bozkurt Guvem; (Ankara, Turkey), and the closingplenary session featured Tayeb Salih (London, UK).After the opening speeches, Bozkurt Guven????. currently advisor tothe President of Turkey and formerly an anthropologist and architect, was called upon to speak on the "Quest for National Identity inTurkey: Cultural Continuity of Historical Diversities." He began byfocusing on the dilemma that a quest for identity generates due to itsdeep-rootedness in the sociocultural and historical consciousness ofpeople at the individual, collective, local, national, static, and transitionallevels. In answer to the question "Who are you?," one's identityis as much dependent on the attitude of the perceiver as it is on theperception that the perceived has of himself or herself. It is therefore ...

Abstract:
Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. (Nymphaeaceae Salisb.) belongs to the category of highly active cenose-forming plants in water bodies and water flows. The material for study of morphological peculiarities and seed productivity of the fruits of this species was collected mainly in the lake ecosystems of the Central Part of European Russia and Republic of Belarus. In the study we used biomorphological and ontogenetic approaches. Seed productivity was surveyed by direct count of number of seeds in the fruit. By abundance (in descending order), the significant reliable inter-lake differences in a number of morphological parameters of the fruit fall into the following sequence: number of rays of stigma of fruit (in six pairs of lakes) > length of fruit (in four pairs of lakes) > diameter of the stigma of fruit (in three pairs of lakes) > diameter of fruit (in two pairs of lakes) > length of the neck of the fruit (in one pair of lakes). Intra-regional differences in certain morphological parameters of fruits (by number of rays of stigmas) were most notably manifested only in the Belarus lakes which are similar by trophic status. All the differences in the fruits’ morphology could be due to differences in the habitat by the amount of nutrients in water and soil. The amount of seed productivity of the fruits from N. lutea varies broadly. Analysis of this parameter depending on the character of soils in which the plants grew indicated reliable results only in the case of muddy (296 ± 81) and sandy soils (179 ± 13). We determined that distribution of generative diasporas of N. lutea across large distances is related not only to presence of floating ability in the seeds, but also the “multi-step” process of their release: first – mericarps from fruits, and then seeds from mericarps. In the experimental conditions, most seeds directly sunk to the bed (70%) and the rest continued to float on the surface of the water during a month. Low germination of the seeds of the water-lily in the laboratory conditions (4–6%) with use of different means and terms of dry stratification was due to the fact that they have an organic morphophysiological intermediate type of rest. Having such a mechanism causes portioned and prolonged germination, allowing the species to survive in non-favourable conditions and accumulate generative diaspores in the soil. Despite the fact that the initial stages of ontogenesis in the laboratory and natural conditions have no significant differences, we found polyvariance in their tempo of development. First of all, this is related to different dates of transition of the plant from one age state to another. In the case of N. lutea, one should also note the morphological polyvariance of ontogenesis related to change in morphologic characteristics of plants depending on the water level. The obtained results give a more complete picture of the peculiarities of generative reproduction of N. lutea, necessary for understanding the ecosystem role of this plant and its impact on biological processes in water bodies.

Full text
Abstract:
Lisianthus (Eustoma exaltatum (L.) Salisb. ex G. Don subsp. russellianum (Hook.) Kartesz) is an economically important ornamental crop in Taiwan. Over the past decade, nine viruses have been identified or detected in lisianthus including: Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), Lisianthus necrosis virus (LNV) (2), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) (1), Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Broad bean wilt virus (BBWV), Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), Pepper veinal mottle virus (PVMV), and Ageratum yellow vein virus (AYVV) (4). In May 2007 (late period of growing season) in central Taiwan, systemic necrotic spots, which are similar to that caused by LNV (2), were found on approximately 20% of the lisianthus plants. Spherical virus particles, approximately 32 nm in diameter, were found in the crude sap of infected lisianthus collected from the fields. However, the diseased samples did not react with antisera against domestic lisianthus-infecting spherical viruses, LNV (2) and CMV (1). A virus culture was isolated via mechanical inoculation on Chenopodium quinoa and serologically identified as Carnation mottle virus (CarMV) by ELISA, western blotting, and immunoelectron microscopy using antiserum against the CarMV zantedeschia strain (3). The virus induced necrotic local lesions on the inoculated leaves of C. quinoa, C. amaranticolor, Gomphrena globosa, Cucurbita moschata, Phaseolus angularis, P. vulgaris, and Vigna unguiculata. Lisianthus was previously reported as a local lesion host for CarMV (3). In current studies with 8 of 10 lisianthus plants, the newly isolated virus induced necrotic local lesions on inoculated leaves 20 days post inoculation (dpi). However, systemic necrotic lesions on noninoculated upper leaves, as were observed in the fields, appeared 120 dpi on inoculated plants, indicating that CarMV induces systemic infection in lisianthus during late growth stages. Noninoculated plants did not develop symptoms. Complementary DNA fragments of viral genomic RNA were amplified with a specific primer of the coat protein gene (3) and sets of degenerate primer for CarMV. The amplified cDNA fragments were cloned and sequenced. The full-length sequence was submitted as GenBank Accession No. FJ843021. The genomic RNA consists of 4,003 nucleotides and has an identical genome organization to that reported for members of the genus Carmovirus. The nucleotide sequence of the full-length genome shares more than 95% identity to isolates of CarMV (GenBank Accession Nos. AF192772, AJ304989, AJ811998, NC_001265, and X02986), and the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence of coat protein shares more than 98% identity with that of CarMV-TW (AY383566) (3), CarMV-FO25 (EF622206), CarMV-Italy-Ca1 (EF622207), and CarMV-Netherland Ca2 (EF622210). To our knowledge, this is the first report of natural infection of CarMV in lisianthus in Taiwan. References: (1) C. C. Chen and C. C. Hu, Plant Prot. Bull. 41:179, 1999. (2) C. C. Chen et al.
