Abstract:
[full article and abstract in English] Vowel duration, though not belonging to the three main factors in the decription of vowels, plays an important role in the English language. Alongside qualitative differences, it helps to distinguish between the meaning of such words as ‘ship’ and ‘sheep’. Vowel duration has been recognised to be a complex phenomenon, which depends on a combination of factors: internal and external (Delattre 1962). The present pilot study focuses on one of the factors belonging to the latter group, i.e. the influence of the postvocalic voicing on vowel duration in minimal pairs of one sylable CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, a phenomenon reffered to as ‘pre-fortis clipping’ (Wells 1990), ‘voicing effect’ (Yoneyama and Kitahara 2014), ‘consonantal voicing effect’ (Beller-Marino 2014), ‘vowel-length effect’ (Ko 2007), ‘shortening’ (Cruttenden 2014), ‘post-vocalic consonant voicing effect’ (Taubeber and Evanini 2009), etc. The scope of this research was limited to four checked unrounded English monophthongs: the front-central, close-mid /ɪ/, the front, mid /e/, the front, open /æ/, and the central, open-mid /ʌ/. The durational differences were analysed from a perceptive and productive perspectives. The obtained results indicated that the Lithuanian learners showed an effect of voicing on vowel-duration, manifested in a number of languages: the mean duration of the examined vowels was shorter before a fortis than before a lenis coda. The analysis of individual students’ production data proved the importance of the individual variable.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the development of case law in the field of police law over the last six years. Against the background of selected aspects such as the differentiation of the central dogmatic figure of the concept of danger and, above all, the information based interventions of the police which have been shifted further and further towards an approach of precaution, the article analyses some important decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court and critically examines some aspects of the development as well as some important clarifications. However, it cannot be overlooked that case law continues to give the legislator very detailed specifications within the framework of the principle of proportionality, which can easily end up in a petrifaction of the circumstances, especially against the background of possible technical developments and possibly increasing needs for prevention. A considered look at the advantages and disadvantages of the future use of new digital investigation tools could open up new possibilities for the legislature beyond the existing solutions.

Abstract:
Linguistic studies of collective consciousness are practically nonexistent though insightful ideas are found in works of many linguists (Chomsky 1985, Fowler 1996). The central tenet of this paper is that archetypes (mental representations of concepts in collective consciousness) are built around socially significant experiences of people and comprise meanings which incarnate collective sentiments and ideologies. The number and composition of such meanings can change and vary due to an interplay of environmental factors – social, political, economic, cultural, etc. – and can be drawn from discourses which perform an ideational function concerned with the representation of world views in a language. Two propositions are preconditional for the present research: first, the acknowledgement of the force of authorial intent (intentionality) in discourse and, second, the assumption that over a long history, language has learnt to suit the needs of the society it functions in (mainly the needs of dominant social groups) by legitimatizing some meanings (conventional meanings) and rejecting others. The concept chosen for the analysis is monetary DEBT. Debt plays an important role both in the economic life of a country and in private lives of individuals. The attitude to debt has been changing throughout the history, and we hypothesize that economic discourses have had a major impact on collective perception of the concept in question.

Abstract:
English title: Is a literary canon necessary? A comparative study based on seven senior high school teachers´ different approaches towards the place of canon in the education of Swedish.   The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how seven senior high school teachers relate to a literary canon in Swedish while teaching literature in senior high school, identifying similarities and differences among the teachers’ view and opinions about an outspoken formal literary canon and a silent, informal canon. The earlier research opens the door slightly to the American debate and gives insight about the complexity of the concept of canon. The study continues with exploring possible relations to postcolonial theory and didactics.     The study reveals that the majority of the concerns against canon are that too much centrally governed education may decrease the motivation and commitment of the teacher. In addition, the dominant canon passivizes a certain variety of literature, thus various points of views. On the other hand, views on the equalizing effect of canon on the level of education and its benefits in increased knowledge of the history of the literature are salient.

Thesis, Paris 6, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA066332.

Full text
Abstract:
Two types of eye movements are combined while tracking a moving object: smooth pursuit and saccades. Saccades are rapid redirections of the visual axis between two centers of interest. Because pursuit gain is smaller than one, the eye would increasingly lag behind the target without any correcting movements. Thus, “catch-up saccades” are triggered by the central nervous system (CNS) to cancel this growing position error between the eye and the target. It is widely accepted that an internal model of target motion is used by the CNS to cancel inherent delays between visual input and smooth pursuit motor output, ensuring accurate tracking of moving targets. The amplitude of catch-up saccades triggered during smooth pursuit could be corrected by a delayed sensory signal to account for the ongoing target displacement during catch-up saccades. Yet, recent studies suggested that the correction of catch-up saccade amplitude must also be done through an internal model of target motion. We developed a new paradigm in which the target switches unexpectedly from one target with a non-constant periodic velocity profile to another with a non-constant aperiodic velocity profile. Our results in healthy humans confirm that the CNS uses an internal model of target motion to correct catch-up saccade amplitude. Internal model is being built gradually from 168 ms after the target switch. We show that a common internal model of target motion is shared within the CNS to control smooth pursuit and to correct catch-up saccade amplitude. The potential neuronal substrate of such an internal model will be discussed in the light of the knowledge from the literature on motor and oculomotor control

Torbicka, Kinga. Thesis, Paris 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA030056.

Full text
Abstract:
The fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 brought a major change in the global balance of power. After 45 years under an imposed communist regime, the countries of Central Europe regain their freedom and sovereignty. The historically, culturally and geographically homogeneous region (at the same time widely diverse in terms of ethnic and religious structure) “returns to Europe”. In this new scheme of international relations, it faces new challenges: political and economic transformation, a revision of its relations with its most important neighbors (the former USSR, unified Germany and the Commonwealth of Independent States), the choice of a security model for the region (neutrality, collective security, the European or the Euro-Atlantic option). The countries of Central Europe decide to develop cooperation within the regional (the Visegrad Group, the Central European Initiative, the Central European Free Trade Agreement) and the sub-regional (Euroregions) dimension, and to join the most important security organizations in the world (NATO, OSCE, UN, EU) in order to ensure and increase security in the region. As a consequence, their security system is currently based on the North Atlantic Treaty and the Common Security and Defense Policy, and supported by networks of regional cooperation as well as enduring and dependable relations with their neighbors. In light of the dynamics of the security process, these countries must now confront new challenges, which include the missile defense shield, terrorism, energy security and the Kaliningrad problem. The “New Europe” as an equal player on the international stage has become the gauge of security on the European continent

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
An Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymer is a copolymer based on a hydrophobic block and a hydrophilic one. When dissolved in water, the hydrophobic blocks self-assemble within aggregates which can lead to a range of different structures (spheres, cylinders, lamellae). Despite their chemical similarity with molecular surfactants, amphiphilic diblock copolymers behave differently in aqueous solution. They exhibit slower kinetic of exchange between aggregates and non associated chains (unimers) and are mostly described as “frozen” since there is no dynamic equilibrium with the unimers. This has been attributed to the glassy nature of the core in the case of polystyrene-block-polyacrylic acid (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers for example (TgPS~100°C). However, with a soft hydrophobic block, such as poly(n-butyl acrylate) (TgPnBA~-55°C), the aggregates are also frozen. A key parameter to consider seems to be the interaction parameters ? either between both blocks and/or between the hydrophobic block and the solvent. Indeed, a dynamic exchange of the unimers between aggregates requires the hydrophobic block to go through the hydrophilic corona and then through the aqueous solution. The aim of this work was then to decrease this interaction parameter to transform frozen aggregates into dynamic ones. Our strategy was to incorporate hydrophilic units into the hydrophobic block in a controlled manner and to study the consequences on the self-assembling properties of the diblocks. We worked with P(nBA)-b-PAA block copolymers in which we incorporated AA units in the PnBA block. The synthesis of those copolymers was achieved by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) in 3 steps: first nBA and tBA were copolymerized to lead to a macroinitiator which was then engaged in a second polymerization to form a PtBA block. Finally the AA units were obtained by a selective acidolysis of the tBA units to obtain P(nBA-co-AA)-b-PAA copolymers. Secondly, the organization of the diblocks was studied in bulk using DSC measurement and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Then, the influence of an external stimulus, the ionization degree of the AA units, was studied. Titration experiments were performed to verify that all the AA units could be ionized, including those contained in the moderately hydrophobic P(nBA-co-AA) block. Finally, we studied the influence of different parameters such as the chemical structure, the pH and the ionic strength, on the self-assembly of those copolymers in aqueous solution. We used different techniques, especially light scattering (LS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), to determine whether the aggregates are dynamic or not

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Verb-Verb complexes in Central Turkic, which includes Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Uzbek, and Uyghur, and in Eastern Turkic, which includes Sakha, Tuvan, and Khakas. To provide a descriptive overview of Verb-Verb complexes in Turkic, we first examine linguistic materials from Sakha and Tuvan, most of which are examples containing delexicalized verbs that supply meaning such as aspectual, manner, modal, and benefactive, uncovering what they have in common and how they differ. We then examine the constructional status of some of the complex verb predicates that may lie on the dividing line of converb constructions and Verb-Verb complexes, as well as the status of some reduced forms to ascertain whether they are Verb-Verb complexes. In addition, some Turkic Verb-Verb complexes are examined to determine whether they are morphological compounds. Our findings revealed that Central and Eastern Turkic seem to have no verb-verb compounds, and solely employ syntactic strategies to form Verb-Verb complexes.

Abstract:
Abstract Centrally staged lean premixed prevaporized low emission combustor has achieved great commercial success in the past decade. Pilot flame characteristics is with key importance to centrally staged combustor, which is considered not entirely up to the design of pilot stage, but also influenced by the flow field and fuel distribution of the combustor. The flow field and fuel distribution behaviors in centrally staged combustor are not very clear since the role of LRZ is unknown, as well as the pilot flame stabilization mechanism. The goal of this paper is to study the flow field, spray distribution and pilot flame stabilization in centrally staged combustor. This paper designs a comparison scheme of the dome lip for study. Particle image velocimetry, Planar Mie scattering measurements and high-speed camera experiments are conducted to get an in depth understanding on the flow field, spray distribution characteristics and pilot flame stabilization in a centrally staged combustor. The flow field with a 3.0 mm lip incline is quite different. Two PRZs forms, one connected with the LRZ and the other at the outlet of pilot stage. Pilot flow no longer joins to the main flow but flows alone in the center. It seems like it is the decoupling pilot stage air cutting PRZ into two PRZs. The pilot spray has a conical boundary and it is probably formed by the high velocity main air flow. A considerable number of fuel droplets are involved in LRZ with the lip incline. Two shapes of pilot flame are observed, the V-shaped flame and double root flame. High-speed camera has captured the flame stabilization process close to LBO. As for the V-shaped pilot flame, the central flame root performs an extinction/relight cycle close to LBO. The cycle duration time is much longer than the critical time of swirl cup methane flame previously reported. As for the double root pilot flame, the central flame root is lighted before the lip flame root and it is the central flame that plays the leading role in stabilizing the whole flame. The lip flame root can weaken the quench effect of main air and broaden the flame stability boundary. A relatively large lip height is recommended for the consideration of the LBO performance.

Abstract:
Nigeria has sought to diversify its economy away from dependence on oil as a major source of government revenue through agricultural commercialisation. Agriculture has been a priority sector because it has very high growth potential and the greatest potential for employment and export revenue. The cocoa and rice value chains are central to the government’s engagement with agriculture to achieve these objectives. This paper sets out to investigate the underlying political economy dynamics of the commercialisation of the cocoa and rice value chains in Nigeria in terms of smallholder farm households’ shift from semi-subsistence agriculture to production primarily for market, and predominantly commercial medium- and large-scale farm enterprises complementing or replacing smallholder farm households.

Abstract:
This paper studies from an empirical and theoretical perspective the systemic and bank-level effects of imposing reserve requirements (RR) in foreign currency in an economy with a heavily dollarized financial system. The paper empirically characterizes banks responses to the RR carried out by the Peruvian Central Bank since 2008 with the objective of stabilizing the financial market and meeting its policy targets. The results suggest that the RR is effective in reducing the overall level of credit in the economy and that banks response in terms of credit and deposits is very heterogeneous depending on their ex ante preference for foreign funding ratio, i.e., the ratio of deposits in dollars to total loans. Motivated by the empirical insights, the paper builds a DSGE small-open-economy model with financial frictions à la Gertler-Karadi-Kiyotaki, where bank heterogeneity and financial dollarization are introduced to evaluate the effectiveness of the differential RR in reducing financial dollarization and improving financial resilience.

Abstract:
We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.

Abstract:
Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for the acute treatment of episodic migraine in adults. Data sources. MEDLINE®, Embase®, Cochrane Central Registrar of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PsycINFO®, Scopus, and various grey literature sources from database inception to July 24, 2020. Comparative effectiveness evidence about triptans and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was extracted from existing systematic reviews. Review methods. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and comparative observational studies that enrolled adults who received an intervention to acutely treat episodic migraine. Pairs of independent reviewers selected and appraised studies. Results. Data on triptans were derived from 186 RCTs summarized in nine systematic reviews (101,276 patients; most studied was sumatriptan, followed by zolmitriptan, eletriptan, naratriptan, almotriptan, rizatriptan, and frovatriptan). Compared with placebo, triptans resolved pain at 2 hours and 1 day, and increased the risk of mild and transient adverse events (high strength of the body of evidence [SOE]). Data on NSAIDs were derived from five systematic reviews (13,214 patients; most studied was ibuprofen, followed by diclofenac and ketorolac). Compared with placebo, NSAIDs probably resolved pain at 2 hours and 1 day, and increased the risk of mild and transient adverse events (moderate SOE). For other interventions, we included 135 RCTs and 6 comparative observational studies (37,653 patients). Compared with placebo, antiemetics (low SOE), dihydroergotamine (moderate to high SOE), ergotamine plus caffeine (moderate SOE), and acetaminophen (moderate SOE) reduced acute pain. Opioids were evaluated in 15 studies (2,208 patients).Butorphanol, meperidine, morphine, hydromorphone, and tramadol in combination with acetaminophen may reduce pain at 2 hours and 1 day, compared with placebo (low SOE). Some opioids may be less effective than some antiemetics or dexamethasone (low SOE). No studies evaluated instruments for predicting risk of opioid misuse, opioid use disorder, or overdose, or evaluated risk mitigation strategies to be used when prescribing opioids for the acute treatment of episodic migraine. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonists improved headache relief at 2 hours and increased the likelihood of being headache-free at 2 hours, at 1 day, and at 1 week (low to high SOE). Lasmiditan (the first approved 5-HT1F receptor agonist) restored function at 2 hours and resolved pain at 2 hours, 1 day, and 1 week (moderate to high SOE). Sparse and low SOE suggested possible effectiveness of dexamethasone, dipyrone, magnesium sulfate, and octreotide. Compared with placebo, several nonpharmacologic treatments may improve various measures of pain, including remote electrical neuromodulation (moderate SOE), magnetic stimulation (low SOE), acupuncture (low SOE), chamomile oil (low SOE), external trigeminal nerve stimulation (low SOE), and eye movement desensitization re-processing (low SOE). However, these interventions, including the noninvasive neuromodulation devices, have been evaluated only by single or very few trials. Conclusions. A number of acute treatments for episodic migraine exist with varying degrees of evidence for effectiveness and harms. Use of triptans, NSAIDs, antiemetics, dihydroergotamine, CGRP antagonists, and lasmiditan is associated with improved pain and function. The evidence base for many other interventions for acute treatment, including opioids, remains limited.
