Full textThe forest industry represents an important part of Quebec’s economic activity and many local communities depend on this sector. In natural forests, the great diversity of tree species and quality brings an added complexity for sorting operations and the flow of resources. Furthermore, the remoteness of the resource implies high transportation costs. Scientific literature demonstrates that sharing transportation capacity can result in important cost reductions (Epstein et al. 2007), but is quite complex to put into place (Frisk et al.2010). Finally, the transition from push systems towards pull type supply chains and the recent difficulties for this industry (decline of the pulp and paper sector, housing crisis of 2008-09, etc.) make it all the more relevant to examine how to better use the wood resource. In this regard, the creation of sort yards, distinct from both the harvesting sites and the mills, offers many opportunities for maximizing value and minimizing costs. Such centers however, represent an important challenge in regards to their daily management and their insertion in the pre-existing logistics network. We therefore hypothesize that for certain economic, logistical and environmental factors, a logistics center comprised of a sort yard and transportation coordination, could generate cost savings, especially through the use of oversize trucks (Chan et al. 2008) and lower sorting costs (as can be deduced from Favreau 1995). We also sense that the sorting activities performed in such a center would also procure an added economic value for companies using its services by limiting the error rate in the classification of the logs, as presented in Sessions (2005). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to identify key factors regarding their impact on the profitability of a regional forest logistics center, combining a specific sort yard and the use of backhauling. Following this, we consider these factors in the development of a profit maximization model for a forest logistics network with the option of using such a sort yard and/or backhauling. This model was first applied to a fictitious but realistic case using generated data in order to estimate the magnitude of potential profit improvements which reached up to $ 0.88 per m3 available for harvest. The model was then applied to optimize a real and complex network to analyze its performance as well as slightly modified versions. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted and revealed that many factors such as distances from the harvesting zones, the number of oversize trucks and the level of stumpage fees had a significant influence on the profitability of such a center. In addition, a dynamic effect between the operation of the yard and the use of backhauling was observed for the real case. The addition of a sort yard allows to reduce the average length of delivery routes by breaking in two the flow of material between the harvesting areas and the production mills. This makes it easier to fit delivery routes within the legal driving time limit. Most importantly, such a yard can serve both as an origin and a destination, therefore opening the door to important reductions in deadheading.

Full textLogistics and Supply Chain Management (SCM) are advocated as improvement areas for the performance of construction sites. Initiatives and attempts to improve supply chains have been implemented recently. In particular, Construction Logistics Centers (CLCs) are gaining more interest among general contractors trying to restructure their materials management methods in complex and confined urban sites. Given the lack of experience and research in the literature regarding CLC solutions and services, this research work aims to contribute to a better understanding of CLC implementation and its corresponding effects. This research work was prepared mainly by a deep investigation of the construction logistics through semi-structured interviews. Lack of time, scarcity of tools, difficulty in estimating costs and benefits and in mobilizing partners were the main difficulties identified in the implementation of a logistics solution. Three levels of criteria are proposed to better understand the choice of these solutions for construction projects. Then, a real experimentation of CLC has been investigated. In fact, this supply system has reduced deliveries, saved time for the workers and improved ergonomics. Nevertheless, it requires more advanced management and causes difficulties in inventory control. Recommendations were provided, both at the strategic and operational levels, for better implementation. The financial viability of CLC from a construction site perspective as well as the effects in terms of deliveries and storage, are also investigated. The results of the exploratory simulation show a relatively positive financial balance and a potential reduction of 26%, 36% and 44% in the number of pallets, storage area and excess storage, respectively. This work has been capitalized in the form of applications that are made available to construction teams. Towards the end of this research work, the effect of CLC on the polluting emissions from the transport of materials is evaluated based on a case study. The results of this study showed a reduction of up to 9%, 12%, 10%, 18%, 19% and 9% of CO2, PM2.5, PM10, CO, NOx and VOC emissions, respectively

Full textThe coordinated management of logistics in an urban context is complex. Pooling is a practice considered by stakeholders as a potential source of urban logistics performance. Several experiences of urban pooling have failed. This research aims to understand the antecedents to the adoption of urban pooling as explanatory factors. The first part of the thesis proposes a literature review of the research fields. Chapter 1 highlights the challenges and issues of urban logistics and urban pooling. Chapter 2 defines the notion of urban pooling as an inter-organizational innovation. This leads to the formulation of three research proposals. Chapter 3 presents the identification and measurement of the antecedents’ influence on the adoption of an inter-organizational innovation. The use of the Diffusion of Innovations Theory applied to the adoption of organizational and inter-organizational innovations leads to the formulation of ten research proposals. The second part presents the empirical study. The methodology approach is developed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 shows the five multiple case studies of urban consolidation centers. Nine antecedents to the adoption of urban pooling are validated: relative advantage, compatibility, testability, observability, voluntariness of use, perceived risk, trust, power of partners and public stakeholders’ influence

Full textThe urban environment is strongly involved in the management of logistics flows. The pooling of these different flows provides a qualitative solution ensuring environmental, economic and societal criteria. The thesis objectives aim at supporting Urban Distribution Centers (CDU) by combining distribution logistics with reverse logistics (upstream flows and downstream flows), thereby ensuring sustainable development in modern cities. The heterogeneity of the distribution logistics practices and the reverse logistics define the core of this thesis. Sharing these different flows provides a qualitative and sustainable solution as long as it meets the aforementioned criteria (environment, economy and society). Our approach is based on the Hub Location Problem to formulate the location problem of UDC while maximizing the profit and choosing the best available location. We proceed by identifying potential available locations, while guaranteeing returned flows management (collection, sorting, resale, etc.) and reducing pollution impact. Moreover, we simulate our optimised model with simulation tools using optimization algorithms. The effectiveness of these algorithms are validated based on generated outputs (set of data) inspired by real world scenarios. Reliability is a part of this work when dealing with UDC deployment. The unavailability of the system may be due to random failures, planned preventive maintenance actions, etc. Therefore, we present a solution supporting daily demands by integrating a collaborative approach between different sites. This approach is based on inter-CDU coordination policy with a strategy of subcontracting deliveries dealing with unavailability

Full textIn order to accelerate product flow, reduce inventory levels and make economies in transportation, companies in almost all industries have set up cross-dock centres. These centres are an intermediate point of consolidation in a supply chain. Car manufacturers Renault and Nissan rely on an international network of crossdock platforms to link suppliers of OEM parts with overseas production plants. In a framework of an academic-industrial partnership between the LIMOS laboratory and Renault, this thesis focuses on the activity planning and scheduling at these crossdock centres.Field studies conducted at Renault and Nissan allowed us to identify the characteristics, constraints and cost drivers of crossdock platforms, as well as to target our review of the literature. Based on this, we propose a sequential optimization approach, comprising two integer linear programming models, implemented in CPLEX and tested on industrial data of two Renault platforms. Numerical experiments’ results obtained on the first model (planning) showed a significant improvement in cost, compared to the Renault method. In light of this results, an industrial implementation was made, with such convincing results. The second model (scheduling) proved to be relevant for medium-sized instances. The proposed approach fits to the current configuration of AILN Renault and we consider that it is adaptable to other industries

Full textThe supply of freight inside cities is the last link of global logistics. Cities are actually in the middle of contradictory issues. On one hand the e-commerce revolution has significantly increased the ingoing flow inside the city. On the other hand people yearn to create pleasant pedestrian spaces of life in which vehicles are not welcome. Yet, freight supply is required to keep the attractiveness of city. It is necessary to provide solutions meeting all these needs.A lot of solutions have been studied to face city logistics issues. Among them, we focus our research on a flow pooling solution exploiting an Urban Consolidation Centre (UCC). It consists of a centralization platform for the distribution of freight intended for the city centre. The purpose is to pool freight from different carriers to limit the use of resources in urban areas. This kind of project is particularly designed to avoid semis from entering the city. Thus, the warehouse is located as close as possible to city centres as well as being as accessible as possible for carriers.Despite the enthusiasm for the UCC concept, this type of solution has not shown much success until now. That is why we choose to concentrate our approach on the observation and assessment of logistics costs to operate a UCC in real life with the aim to answer the question: Can an UCC be viable in a middle size European city? Particularly, we show this is the case but with some specific conditions that we present in details. To do so, we developed two models: the first one is an economical model based on operational costs and the second is a physical model based on the study of process ‘times. The combination between both models gave the opportunity to highlight some levers. Then we tested these levers on case studies and we suggest some improvement of the performance thanks to a new logistics organisation called « Physical Internet »

Full textUrban consolidation centres are a popular measure in city logistics, which aims at rationalizing delivery trips in an urban area. However, although their environmental benefits have been extensively addressed and documented, many of the implementation cases fail to reach sufficient participation and demonstrate a viable business model. Some of the main barriers linked to their implementation are the financial concerns and the stakeholder acceptance. Consequently, the success of these schemes has often been subject to a strong regulatory and financial support from public authorities. Recently, new forms of urban consolidation centre operating models offering a range of value-added activities have appeared, allowing a better integration of these facilities in the overall supply chain. Furthermore, a large number of recent experiments focus on small-scale freight consolidation, relaxing the requirements for material and human resources. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential of urban freight consolidation platforms to decrease the costs and improve the performance of urban logistics chains. In particular, the thesis will address factors that influence the viability of these schemes in a framework of market economy. The thesis is structured around three research questions that address (1) the viability of the traditional urban consolidation centre model based on transhipment and consolidation activities (2) the impact of market-based accompanying measures for urban consolidation centre project implementation and the resulting level of stakeholder support and (3) the impact of new approaches in urban freight consolidation platforms and in particular those of new urban consolidation centres operating models and micro-consolidation platforms. By tackling these aspects, the thesis demonstrates that the traditional urban consolidation centre model can present a viable alternative but that the success of the scheme is subject to a large number of requirements that are often difficult to meet in practice. The thesis highlights accompanying measures that can both increase the expected participation in the consolidation scheme as well as the stakeholder acceptance of the scheme, and those that meet a less positive stakeholder response. Finally, the thesis identifies the potential benefits of new operating models of urban consolidation centres and of small-scale consolidation.

Full textLogistics activities are fundamental leverages for the productive systems’ efficiency, but also create a lot of jobs. However, logistics activities induce negative externalities: first, by the flows created by these activities, then by the facilities supporting it (infrastructures, equipment, buildings, etc.). To attract logistics activities, while reducing negative externalities, local public authorities use a certain number of regulatory tools. To that extent, a public policy is mostly used, pushed forward by modal report necessity linked with sustainable development: the logistics center, which is an area equipped in order to host logistics activities. This thesis focuses on the articulation between planning policies and regional economic development. The first part brings to light different roles played by logistics centers: two external roles, direct and indirect, and one internal. By using original methods and data, the second part of this thesis aims to test the validity of these different roles. The major result of this work is that by nature of logistics activities – which take part in enlarged chains and networks – the wider economic impacts of logistics centers are low
