Abstract:
This chapter analyses the status of India’s social science research (SSR) publications in global context. The outputs chosen to assess India’s comparative performance is the articles written and published by Indians in the field of social sciences either individually or in collaboration with researchers outside India. The study analysed journal articles published during 2008–14 drawn from Scopus database to examine the publication status of India in social sciences in an international context. The study found that the six-year period, 2009–14, India consistently ranks among the top 15 countries in the world. Discipline-wise analysis shows that the share of pure social science articles was significant but is declining. Of the total 30938 articles, 28 per cent are published with international collaboration. The USA and the UK contribute 52 per cent of total international collaborations.

Abstract:
Indian cinema has historically assumed that its enormous local impact disqualifies it from imagining an audience beyond the domestic one. ‘Bollywood’ explains, however, that there has been—and still is—an elusive fugitive, global audience. But why are only 15–17 per cent of Indian films commercially successful? Who is making all the money? The criminal underworld of Bollywood is described along with the attempts to clean up the industry. An important marker occurred in 2006, when the very character of the Indian state appeared to have been transformed, and with it, its attitude to its cinema industry. It was important that India’s ambitions for globalizing its economy coincided with the digital revolution.

Parthasarathi, Prasannan, and Giorgio Riello. From India to the World: Cotton and Fashionability. Edited by Frank Trentmann. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199561216.013.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Since at least the nineteenth century, cotton has been the most important textile fibre in the world. In 1913, cotton accounted for 80 per cent of global fibre consumption: cotton consumption for textile uses was about 4 billion kilograms, while that of wool, the second most important fibre, was about 700 million kilograms. In 1990, even after the rise of synthetic fibres, which accounted for 38 per cent of global fibre use in textiles, cotton accounted for 48 per cent of world fibre share and wool had slumped to the low proportion of 4.9 per cent. The appeal of cotton lay in its fashionability, which was often associated with the exotic, the hard to get, the item that came from afar. Cotton textiles, many from the Indian subcontinent, satisfied these fashion desires for the rare and the unusual. This article explores cotton and fashionability in India. After discussing cotton textiles, it looks at the diffusion of Indian cottons in Africa and Asia, as well as in Europe and the Atlantic world.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the exceptional composition of the landmark Kothari Commission, and its blend of idealism and realism. It offers a succinct account of the recommendations of the Kothari Commission, and the ferocious opposition to its recommendations regarding elementary and higher education, language policy, and the establishment of world class universities. It presents a candid critique of its recommendation that has become a hardy perennial of Indian educational discourse, namely that Government allocate at least 6 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to education. It gives a crisp account of Independent India’s first National Policy on Education (1968). It also outlines the Constitutional Amendment of 1978 which made education a ‘concurrent subject’, and the educational initiatives of the short lived Janata Government (1976–8), India’s first non-Congress Party Central Government. It also outlines the key role played by J.P Naik in the Kothari Commission and Janata Government and evolution of his thinking.

Dwivedi, Hari Krishna. Debt Sustainability of Subnational Governments in India. Oxford University PressOxford, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198903116.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In 2020, for the first time in history, the world’s debt as a percentage of its GDP exceeded 100 per cent. Although it has since come down slightly, there are concerns about where the next debt crisis will happen, given that Pakistan and Sri Lanka have already found themselves in debt crises. Although India’s overall fiscal health and macroeconomic conditions remain stable, the same may not be completely true when the discussion shifts to India’s subnational entities. This book attempts to answer this question by analysing the debt sustainability of states in the context of many emerging issues and challenges to the states’ fiscal health. The focus of the book remains providing usable and practical recommendations that can ensure the fiscal health of the subnational governments in India and in other federal countries across the world.
