Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess whether there is an association between CEO age and analysts forecast properties (particularly forecast accuracy and bias/optimism). CEOs, having the central role in managing firms, can significantly influence the financial and non-financial decisions in an organisation. Furthermore, having been identified as key culprits in past major accounting scandals, it is also important to identify the CEO characteristics that affect financial reporting decisions. ABSTRACT We study a corporate board tasked with monitoring a firm's CEO and providing incrementally decision-relevant information. The board has both compensation and non-pecuniary incentives—we label the latter board bias. Friendly boards have muted information gathering incentives, but can more effectively engage in cheap talk communication with management. As a result, the direction of the optimal board bias is determined by the CEO's initial information advantage: the board should be weakly friendly if the CEO is endowed with precise information, and weakly antagonistic (to the CEO) otherw

The thesis seeks to address the centrality of the body and embodied subjectivity in the experience of memory and indeed in signification and experience more generally. Abstract:

Abstract:
Patterns need not be combinations of numbers. For example, employees—ranging from clerks to CEOs—who do their jobs extremely well are often less successful when they are promoted to new positions—a disappointment immortalized by the Peter Principle: “managers rise to the level of their incompetence.” Patterns in observational data can be misleading because of self-selection bias, in that observed differences among people making different choices may be due to the type of people making such choices. When compelled to use observational data, it is important that the theories to be tested are specified before looking at the data. Otherwise, we are likely to be fooled by phantom patterns.

Full text
Abstract:
While making objective rankings sounds like an appealing goal, there are at least two reasons why we may not have objectivity: ignorance and manipulation. Persons with less knowledge suffer from illusory superiority due to their cognitive bias, a phenomenon called the Dunning–Kruger effect. Omnipresent in society is not only ignorance but also manipulation. Manipulators have the intention of gaining personal advantage by adopting different tricks, and the chapter summarizes these tricks. Then the importance and the difficulties of measuring society are discussed. According to Campbell’s law, use of quantitative indicators will distort and corrupt the social processes they are intended to monitor. “Rank and yank” refers to an annual performance review process by which a company ranks its employees against one another, and it looks as though CEOs have the difficult problem of avoiding unhealthy dog-eat-dog situations in the workplace. The chapter then discusses how a particular social metric, the credit score, is calculated and how objective the result is. It argues that social scientists and computer scientists should cooperate to generate “ethical algorithms” to avoid social prejudice. Further, it is argued that quantification is an indispensable part of an evaluation process. Metrics are not a silver bullet, because they might be manipulated, but careful measurement is better than purely subjective opinion.
