The analysis of ceramic fragments from the site of Puerto Nuevo (1000-500 AC), on the south coast of Peru, reveals a diversified ceramic production and possible long distance interaction networks for ceramics along the coast during the first half of the first millennium before our era. Macroscopic analysis with a hand-held digital low power microscope of fresh cross-sections conducted by Alejandro Rey de Castro allowed classifying the ceramics in different paste groups as well as identifying atypical ceramics. Given the long history of research within the Aegean, the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) of the Cyclades is surprisingly poorly understood. This region is often considered within the context of other ‘worlds’, particularly in the quest to understand ‘Minoanisation’. Prominent Middle Cycladic sites such as Ayia Irini (Kea), Phylakopi (Melos) and Akrotiri (Thera) have played a dominant role towards informing the perceived Cycladic ‘response’ to growing Minoan influence within the Aegean sphere, often at the expense of considering the interactions between these important settlements. Moche’s distinct archaeological signatures, chiefly, ceramics and architecture, have long been seen as emblematic of an ethnic and political reality and defined as evidence for the first South American state although recent scholarship has begun to view Moche as a more complex mosaic of interacting settlements across a landscape. Trade between two regions often necessitates that the respective parties are political entities. This was indeed the case for trade between Egypt and the Levant during the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000-1550 BC, MBA) and Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550-1200 BC, LBA). Scientific analyses of Canaanite jars, transport vessels, from the site of Memphis, Egypt provided an ideal proxy for examining the relationship between trade and politics. Located on a crossroads between the two most politically and economically important cities in the region—Corinth and Argos—Nemea serves as an ideal site for the study of ceramic distribution in the area. These elements make ceramic a craft-made expression and an artistic expression of a certain culture and the ’key fossil‘.
