Ceramic slurries for investment casting with the potential to replace the use of zirconium silicate have been investigated. Alumina, aluminoslicates, mullite, zirconia-mullite and zircon refractory materials were characterised and paired with colloidal silica to evaluate their slurry properties. It was found that the particle size distribution of the filler affected the viscosity of the slurries under a shear rate of drainage. A larger proportion of fines in the filler were shown to form slurries with a longer draining time. This was found to impact the shell thermo-mechanical properties by in

The development of a disintegrating core-body for use in an art bronze foundry, which employs the ceramic shell investment process, begins with an investigation of four principal materials that will constitute the core formula. The specifications for the disintegration of the designed core-body formula fall within the parameters that are normally set and used in the ceramic shell art bronze casting process. The raison d’ être for the disintegrating formula is based on the premise that cement breaks down (spalling) after being subjected to heat above a certain temperature. It was shown that pur

An investment casting mould consists of individual layers of fine zircon particles and granular mullite particles by using silica gel as binder to form a shell mould. However, the whole process was too complicated and setting times required several days normally. In addition, the waste ceramic shell mould needed further disposal. In this study, outer layers of casting mould were replaced by geopolymer, which was fabricated by mixing waste ceramic shell mould, metakaolin, and the ground

With the same sintering condition, the bending strength of the ceramic shell increases with the silica content. The highest bending strength of the shell mold occurs at the silica content of 22.5% as increasing the silica content, the bending strength decreases again due to the formation of large quantity of holes after sintering. The benefits of EPD process are simple facilities, low cost, high deposition rate, and good surface finish. Nowadays, EPD is used widely for the fabrication of ceramic film. In this study, EPD process was used to fabricate ZrO2 primary coat on the conductive plastic, then the primary coat was set for drying after EPD process. The conventional shell building

The main concern of the kaolin additive in the backup slurry was its effect on the viscosity, pH and rheology; and for ceramic shell mold, was its effect on green strength, hot strength, fired strength and high temperature permeability. The results showed: for the properties of backup slurry, the decline of pH was relaxed when the amount of kaolin additives were 3 wt% and 5 wt%; when the adding amount was up to 10 wt%, the decrease of pH was more obviousl
