Damage caused by the white snail Cernuella virgata (Da Costa, 1778) was for the first time observed in vegetable crops in Serbia during the summers of 2011 and 2012. Typical xerophilic snail species in the genera Cernuella, Xerolenta and Theba cause damage even more rarely since they are limited to wild flora in uncultivated and ruderal areas, and local outbreaks occur seldom and only in forage leguminous crops. Abstract:
Three species of land snails, Theba pisana (Müller, 1774), Cernuella virgata (Da Costa, 1778) and Cochlicella acuta (Müller, 1774), introduced to Australia from the Mediterranean region, cause significant economic problems in harvested crops in southern Australia. One of the strategies for post-harvest control of these snails involves stubble management to knock the snails onto the hot ground during summer. Farmers report variable results with this strategy, which could be due to varying heat tolerances between the 3 species. In a series of laboratory experiments, field-collected snails of the

The land snail Cernuella virgata (da Costa, 1778) is widely considered as a pest to be quarantined in most countries. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of C. virgata is published. The mitochondrial genome has a length of 14,147 bp a DNA base composition of 29.07% A, 36.88% T, 15.59% C and 18.46% G, encoding 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The complete nucleotide composition was biased toward adenine and thymine, A+T accounting for 69.80%. Nine PCGs and 14 tRNA genes are encoded on the J strand, and the other four P

We performed a molecular and a comparative cytogenetic analysis on different Helicoidea species and a review of all the available chromosome data on the superfamily to provide an updated assessment of its karyological diversity. Standard karyotyping, banding techniques, and Fluorescence in situ hybridization of Nucleolus Organizer Region loci (NOR-FISH) were performed on fifteen species of three families: two Geomitridae, four Hygromiidae and nine Helicidae. The karyotypes of the studied species varied from 2n = 44 to 2n = 60, highlighting a high karyological diversity. NORs were on a single c

AbstractPredicting the impacts of global climate change on the current and future distribution of alien or endangered species is an essential subject in macroecological studies. Although several investigations have been devoted to animal and plant species, few have addressed terrestrial gastropods. We employed spatial distribution modelling to construct European and global potential distribution ranges of two land snails (Cernuella virgata and Hygromia cinctella) using current and future climate scenarios. Both species have been continuously spreading northward from the Mediterranean region, a

Mucus trails are defining features of the class Gastropoda, which includes snails and slugs. While several studies have shown that mucus trails are followed by conspecifics, the detectable elements in the mucus have not been clearly identified. This is particularly relevant during periods of reproduction, whereby conspecific cues are critical for mate finding. A better understanding of the mucus’ molecular components, including proteins differentially represented between the reproductive and non-reproductive stages, could aid the development of novel eco-friendly biocontrol approaches. The snails Cernuella virgata, Cochlicella acuta and Theba pisana are introduced pests of grain crops and pastures in southern Australia. The population dynamics of these three species of snail were studied for 20 years in two adjacent fields where they coexisted on a farm on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The fields were used for pasture–cereal rotations. Surveys were conducted in autumn and spring each year, coinciding respectively with the start of the breeding season and peak abundance of snails (mostly juveniles). Populations varied greatly in abundance between years and between s

Terrestrial slugs and snails can significantly harm agriculture. Due to environmental concerns associated with chemical molluscicides, biological control methods are increasingly being explored. Oscheius myriophilus (Poinar, 1986), a nematode species recently discovered in association with Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon, 1855, holds promise as a biocontrol agent for gastropod pests. In this study, we investigated the chemotactic response and motility of O. myriophilus when exposed to the mucus of five mollusk species: Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758, Cernuella virgata (Da Costa, 1778), Deroceras re
