Yale Osborn MS. b 197 includes a neglected witness, one of six, to George Herbert’s “Æthiopissa ambit Cestum Diuersi Coloris Virum,” followed by the only known copy of a twenty-two-line reply, “Cesti ad Æthiopissam Responsio.” This latter cannot be said with any certainty to be Herbert’s; it is nevertheless a fascinating rejoinder to perhaps the most un-Herbertian of his poems. This paper provides edited texts, original translations, and apparatus; a description of the manuscript; and consideration of arguments for and against attributing the new poem to Herbert.

Abstract:
Alkali halides have received attention due to their potential application as detector coating. This is due to the appearance of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) absorption peaks in their absorption spectrum. The formation of SPR peaks is due to the formation of cesium metal clusters within the cesium halide matrix. Experimental work on cesium iodide explained the formation of cesium clusters in cesium iodide films. It was experimentally seen that when iodine atom escapes from the cesium iodide unit cell, then the newly created cubic unit cell of cesium exerts force on neighboring cesium iodide unit cells. This force results in cesium iodide taking up a tetragonal lattice structure. The aim of this paper is to theoretically investigate the tetragonal cesium iodide’s band structure and dielectric constant using ab initio calculations. The results indicate that both the band structure and the dielectric constant of cesium iodide in tetragonal phase show a systematic variation with changes in the lattice constant. This alteration in dielectric constant or variation in refractive index of cesium iodide, which acts as the surrounding media for the cesium metal clusters, induces a shift in the SPR peak position. The calculated dielectric constants were used for Gan model calculations of the extinction coefficient and evaluation of SPR peak position ([Formula: see text]). A redshift in [Formula: see text] was seen with increasing dielectric constant that appears with stress acting on cesium iodide’s lattice. These results were found to be in agreement with experimental results reported earlier by us.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe adsorption and desorption of cesium onto layered minerals, zeolite and geochemical reference samples were studied. 0.5 g of bentonite and mica were able to adsorb 71.2 and 51.5 mg of cesium, respectively, from 50 mL of deionized water containing 200 mg/L of cesium under neutral pH condition. These amounts of cesium adsorption were greater than those reported for vermiculites (8.9 and 5.6 mg, respectively). Additionally, the cesium adsorption on mica and vermiculite remained essentially unchanged under seawater conditions, but it decreased drastically on zeolite. The cesium desorption from the layered minerals was promoted by the addition of ammonium ions, namely trioctylmethylammonium chloride and zephiramine. These ammonium ions desorb cesium from the interlayers of the minerals without destroying the mineral structure. The cesium desorption procedure using quaternary ammonium ions would be extremely useful for decontamination of soil containing the layered minerals with adsorbed radioactive cesium.

Abstract:
Syringic acid, a phenolic compound, serves a variety of beneficial functions in cells. Syringic acid increases in plants in response to cesium, and exogenous application of syringic acid resulted in a significant attenuation of cesium-induced growth defects in Arabidopsis. In addition, cesium or syringic acid application to plants also resulted in increased lignin deposition in interfascicular fibers. To better understand the role of lignin and syringic acid in attenuating cesium-induced growth defects, two mutants for Arabidopsis REDUCED EPIDERMAL FLUORESCENE 4 (REF4) and fourteen laccase mutants, some of which have lower levels of lignin, were evaluated for their response to cesium. These mutants responded differently to cesium stress, compared to control plants, and the application of syringic acid alleviated cesium-induced growth defects in the laccase mutants but not in the ref4 mutants. These findings imply that lignin plays a role in cesium signaling but the attenuation of cesium stress defects by syringic acid is mediated by regulatory components of lignin biosynthesis and not lignin biosynthesis itself. In contrast, syringic acid did not alleviate any low potassium-induced growth defects. Collectively, our findings provide the first established link between lignin and cesium stress via syringic acid in plants.

Abstract:
Fukushima nuclear power plant was destroyed by tsunami of the Great East Japan earthquake, and radioactive cesium was widely scattered from there. Further, highly concentrated radioactive cesium was found in the bottom of the sea sludge of Tokyo Bay, where the cesium concentration is 1.513 times as high as usual. However, the decontamination method of the bottom of the sea sludge is not yet established. Therefore, the authors proposed to decontaminate cesium from the sea sludge under an anaerobic condition, referenced from a previous study. Sludge and cesium nitrate were mixed with a wet weight ratio of 0.3 wt% for cesium nitrate to form a model mixture, and immersed in 6 dm3 of deionized water and kept for 10 days. As a result, the author found terms that is able to decrease amount of cesium in the sludge. However we found this term was not anaerobic condition from after research, finally found difficult to decreased cesium in the sludge without aerobic condition.

Abstract:
Our effort for decontamination of radioactive cesium scattered widely by nuclear accident in March 2011 in Fukushima, Japan has been described. Radioactive cesium scattered widely in Japan has been accumulating in arc or plasma molten-solidified ash in waste incinerating facilities up to 90,000 Bq/kg of the radioactive waste. Water rinsing of the ash resulted in dissolution of cesium ions together with high concentrations of potassium and sodium ions. Although potassium inhibits the adsorption of cesium on zeolite, we succeeded to precipitate cesium by in-situ formation of ferric ferrocyanide and iron rust in the radioactive filtrate after rinsing of the radioactive ash with water. Because the regulation of no preservation of any kind of cyanide substances, cesium was separated from the precipitate consisting of cesium-captured ferric ferrocyanide and ferric hydroxide in diluted NaOH solution and subsequent filtration gave rise to the potassium-free radioactive filtrate. Cesium was captured by zeolite from the potassium-free radioactive filtrate. The amount of this final radioactive waste of zeolite was significantly lower than that of the arc-molten-solidified ash.

Abstract:
Cesium has been widely used to study the roles of the hyperpolarization-activated (Ih) and inwardly rectifying potassium (KIR) channels in many neuronal and nonneuronal cell types. Recently, extracellular application of cesium has been shown to produce epileptiform activity in brain slices, but the mechanisms for this are not known. It has been proposed that cesium blocks the KIR in glia, resulting in an abnormal accumulation of potassium in the extracellular space and inducing epileptiform activity. This hypothesis has been tested in hippocampal slices and cultured hippocampal neurons using potassium-sensitive microelectrodes. In the present study, application of cesium produced spontaneous epileptiform discharges at physiological extracellular potassium concentration ([K+]o) in the CA1 and CA3 regions of hippocampal slices. This epileptiform activity was not mimicked by increasing the [K+]o. The epileptiform discharges induced by cesium were not blocked by the N-methyl-d- aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist AP-5, but were blocked by the non-NMDA receptor antagonist CNQX. In the dentate gyrus, cesium induced the appearance of spontaneous nonsynaptic field bursts in 0 added calcium and 3 mM potassium. Moreover, cesium increased the frequency of field bursts already present. In contrast, ZD-7288, a specific Ihblocker, did not cause spontaneous epileptiform activity in CA1 and CA3, nor did it affect the field bursts in the dentate gyrus, suggesting that cesium induced epileptiform activity is not directly related to blockade of the Ih. When potassium-sensitive microelectrodes were used to measure [K+]o, there was no significant increase in [K+]o in CA1 and CA3 after cesium application. In the dentate gyrus, cesium did not change the baseline level of [K+]o or the rate of [K+]o clearance after the field bursts. In cultured hippocampal neurons, which have a large and relatively unrestricted extracellular space, cesium also produced cellular burst activity without significantly changing the resting membrane potential, which might indicate an increase in [K+]o. Our results suggest that cesium causes epileptiform activity by a mechanism unrelated to an alteration in [K+]o regulation.

Abstract:
Objectives: Among various radioactive contaminants, radioactive cesium is one of the most harmful radionuclides that causes human health issues due to its high emission of gamma-ray, high solubility, high mobility, high fission yield, and long half-life. Different kinds of adsorbents have been developed for the removal of cesium from radioactive wastewater. Especially, biochar has attracted great attention as a potential adsorbent in the treatment of pollutants and for water purification. In addition, Prussian blue is a cubic lattice structure that contains a cage size similar to the hydrated cesium ionic radius, indicating it can selectively remove cesium ions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the cesium adsorption performance of synthesized Prussian blue-immobilized coffee ground biochar (PB-CGBC) under various experimental conditions for cesium removal from radioactive wastewater. Methods: After wasted coffee ground was washed and dried, it was heated at 400℃ with 10℃/min of heating rate and 5 h of retention time in a furnace with little or no available air. The PB-CGBC was synthesized using a facile co-precipitation method. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, field emission-transmission electron microscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and zeta potential analyzer were used to analyze physico-chemical characteristics and surface structure of the synthesized adsorbents. The kinetic and equilibrium experiments of cesium adsorption on PB-CGBC were carried out and the effect of pH, temperature, initial cesium concentration, and contact time were also investigated in a batch system. Results and Discussion: The characteristic analysis clearly confirmed the successful synthesis of PB-CGBC, indicating its abundant functional groups and special surface structure. In the batch study, it was found that the cesium adsorption onto the PB-CGBC was exothermic nature. The Elovich kinetic model and Temkin isotherm also provided a good correlation with the cesium adsorption reaction onto the PB-CGBC. The maximum adsorption capacity of PB-CGBC for cesium was 129.57 mg/g at 15℃ and pH 8 at 40 mM of an initial cesium concentration, which was one of the highest values among those of previously reported adsorbents. Conclusions: In this study, the PB-CGBC was synthesized by immobilizing Prussian blue to the surface of coffee ground biochar and successfully applied for the adsorptive removal of cesium ions. Based on the experimental results, the synthesized PB-CGBC can be served as a great adsorbent for treatment of wastewater polluted with radioactive cesium.

The spatial distributions of potassium and rubidium in Lentinula edodes mushrooms contaminated with radioactive cesium were measured using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis by a beam scanning technique with a submillimeter sized proton beam to study relationships in elemental concentration in the mushrooms between radioactive cesium and other alkali elements. The results of PIXE analysis were compared with the spatial distribution of radioactive cesium in the samples measured by an autoradiographic method. Radioactive cesium was not uniformly distributed and strongly concentrated in the peripheral region of pileus of the mushroom while the elemental maps evaluated from PIXE analysis showed that potassium and rubidium are highly accumulated in the same area as radioactive cesium. The present results suggest a common mechanism of the accumulation of alkali elements including radioactive cesium in Lentinula edodes mushrooms.

It has long been recognized that a need for practical methods for maintaining optimum cesium pressure within a thermionic energy converter has been pursued for space applications. An attractive solution to the problem is the use of a sorption type reservoir where cesium absorbed into a lattice. Four graphite materials were initially investigated for the potential usage as cesium storage media. Primary research focusing on the characteristics of loading ability, structural integrity, and dimensional change of these materials was performed by synthesizing proper cesium-graphite lamellar compounds with a two zone vapor transport method. Graphite foams show promising prospect for thermionic application as integral cesium reservoir material.

Abstract:
The fate of radioactive cesium (134Cs plus 137Cs) during the milling of contaminated Japanese wheat cultivars harvested in FY2011, and during the cooking of Japanese udon noodles made from the wheat flour, was investigated. Grain samples containing various radioactive cesium concentrations (36.6 to 772 Bq/kg [dry weight]) were milled using a laboratory-scale test mill to produce eight fractions: three break flours (1B, 2B, and 3B), three reduction flours (1M, 2M, and 3M), bran, and shorts. The concentrations of radioactive cesium were found to be highest in the bran fractions of all the samples tested, with 2.3- to 2.5-fold higher values than that of the whole grain. Shorts contained radioactive cesium levels similar to that of the whole grain. In contrast, radioactive cesium concentrations in other fractions were found to be less than half the concentration in whole grain. The average processing factor (PF) value calculated for patent flour (0.401 ± 0.048), made from the mixture of 1B, 2B, 1M, and 2M for human consumption, or for low-grade flour (0.467 ± 0.045), made from the mixture of 3B and 3M, was found to be less than 0.5; whereas the average PF value (2.07 ± 0.232) for feed bran (mixture of bran and shorts), which has been used mainly as livestock feed in Japan, was over 2.0. Boiling udon noodles (made from patent flour) resulted in a substantial reduction (>70% of initial amount) of radioactive cesium. Moreover, radioactive cesium was reduced further (<10% of the initial amount) in the subsequent rinsing process, and the PF value of boiled noodles was recorded as 0.194. These results demonstrated that patent flour containing radioactive cesium can be made safe for human consumption by adopting the standard limit for radioactive cesium in wheat grain and that radioactive cesium in udon noodles is substantially reduced by cooking.

Abstract:
Particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis of Lentinula edodes mushrooms (Shiitake mushrooms) contaminated with radioactive cesium was performed to study relationships between concentrations of alkali elements in the shiitake mushroom samples and their radioactive cesium levels. The shiitake mushrooms were cultivated using radiocontaminated hard wood logs due to the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima. The significant localization of radioactive cesium was found in the pileus region of the shiitake mushroom from autoradiographic observation. The concentrations of alkali elements in the shiitake sample were measured by PIXE analysis. The PIXE analysis has shown that the concentrations and transfer coefficients of potassium and rubidium in the pileus are much higher than the other parts of the shiitake sample as is the case of radioactive cesium. It is suggested that radioactive cesium is transferred into shiitake mushrooms in a manner similar to potassium and rubidium. The results of this work have shown the possibility to be able to use rubidium as an elemental tracer for radioactive cesium.

Potassium zinc hexacyanoferrate (KZnFc) was synthesized, and the adsorption amount at equilibrium and adsorption rate of uptake of cesium (I) on KZnFc from several aqueous solutions was investigated comprehensively by varying the initial cesium concentration and temperature. The rate of uptake of cesium was analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. This study will be helpful for understanding the adsorption mechanisms of cesium ion, and KZnFc could be used as potential adsorbent for adsorbing Cs (I) from oil field water of Nanyishan.

The Cs2SeO4-H2SeO4-H2O and Cs2SeO4-Li2SeO4-H2O systems were studied at 30 °C as a basis for determining the conditions for formation of the compound Cs4LiH3(SeO4)4, which has been observed to undergo a ferroelectric phase transition. The results of a solubility study were used to construct a pseudo-ternary cross-section for CsLiSeO4-CsHSeO4-H2O in the quaternary system Cs2SeO4-Li2SeO4-H2SeO4-H2O, which demonstrated that, in the region of crystallization of the compound of interest, a substance with the composition Cs4LiH3(SeO4)4 is actually formed. Attention was further paid to the following newly prepared compounds: cesium-lithium selenate hemihydrate, CsLiSeO4·1/2 H2O, tricesium-lithium bis(selenate) hemihydrate, Cs3Li(SeO4)2·1/2 H2O and hydrogen tricesium bis(selenate) hemihydrate, Cs3H(SeO4)2·1/2 H2O, which were characterized by X-ray, spectral and thermoanalytical data.

Abstract:
The content of cesium-137 in the soil cover of the central and southern parts of Tajikistan was studied. The study area of the regions of the republic is about 45,000 km2. 92 soil samples from the Central and Southern parts of the republic were collected from cultivated and uncultivated fields to a depth of 25 cm from the ground surface. Each sample at the sampling point was cleared of stones, roots and other inclusions. The sample was dried to an air-dry state, crushed and sieved through a sieve with a hole diameter of 2 mm. When measuring the samples, we used a standard 1 L Marinelli beaker. Measurements of the specific activity of cesium-137 in soil samples were carried out on a gamma spectrometer based on highly pure germanium. The maximum content of cesium-137 was observed in soil sample No. 1 of the Kamarob area of the Rasht district, which specific activity in the sample is 148 Bq / kg. The minimum specific activity of cesium-137 is observed in soil samples from the Tajikabad district. The dependence of the concentration of cesium-137 on the topography in the region under study has been established. In some of the investigated samples, the cesium-137 isotope was not detected (sample no. 2 from the Ayvaj area of the Shahritus district and sample no. 4 from the Farkhor district). The dynamics of the distribution of cesium-137 on the soils of uncultivated fields and soils of cultivated fields of the Khatlon region of Tajikistan has been studied. It was found that the content of the isotope of cesium-137 in the treated fields differs from the untreated ones. It has been determined that in the soils of cultivated lands, the content of cesium-137 is concentrated at a depth of 20-25 cm. At the foot of the mountains and clay soils, a relatively high content of the isotope of cesium-137 is observed in comparison with plains and sandy soils.

Abstract:
Abstract Biological approaches for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from contaminated water are reported. The present study was carried out with the objective of identifying bacterial strains for the uptake of cesium that could be used for bioremediation. Polymer carriers prepared by radiation polymerization were used for the immobilization of bacteria and the efficiency of free cells and immobilized cells for the removal of cesium was evaluated. Thirty-five bacterial isolates were screened for resistance to cesium and five bacterial isolates based on resistance to cesium (BR-3, BR-6, BR-21, BR-39, BR-40) were selected for immobilization. Polymer carriers were prepared using 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% acrylamide at different doses of 1 to 5 kGy gamma radiation. The polymer carriers prepared using 30% and 40% acrylamide at 5 kGy were found to be suitable based on gel fraction and absorption capacity for the immobilization of bacterial cells. Bioremoval of cesium by free and immobilized bacterial cells was evaluated. Significant reductions of 76–81% cesium were observed with bacterial cells immobilized by radiation polymerization.

Abstract:
We investigated the fate of radioactive cesium (134Cs plus 137Cs) during the production of tofu, natto, and nimame (boiled soybean) from a contaminated Japanese soybean cultivar harvested in FY2011. Tofu, natto, and nimame were made from soybean grains containing radioactive cesium (240 to 340 Bq/kg [dry weight]), and the radioactive cesium in the processed soybean foods and in by-product fractions such as okara, broth, and waste water was measured with a germanium semiconductor detector. The processing factor is the ratio of radioactive cesium concentration of a product before and after processing. For tofu, natto, nimame, and for the by-product okara, processing factors were 0.12, 0.40, 0.20, and 0.18, respectively; this suggested that these three soybean foods and okara, used mainly as an animal feed, can be considered safe for human and animal consumption according to the standard limit for radioactive cesium of soybean grains. Furthermore, the ratio of radioactive cesium concentrations in the cotyledon, hypocotyl, and seed coat portions of the soybean grain was found to be approximately 1:1:0.4.

Abstract:
We analyzed the global transcriptional response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells exposed to different concentrations of CsCl in the growth medium and at different times after addition. Early responsive genes were mainly involved in cell wall structure and biosynthesis. About half of the induced genes were previously shown to respond to other alkali metal cations in a Hog1-dependent fashion. Western blot analysis confirmed that cesium concentrations as low as 100 mM activate Hog1 phosphorylation. Another important fraction of the cesium-modulated genes requires Yaf9p for full responsiveness as shown by the transcriptome of a yaf9-deleted strain in the presence of cesium. We showed that a cell wall-restructuring process promptly occurs in response to cesium addition, which is dependent on the presence of both Hog1 and Yaf9 proteins. Moreover, the sensitivity to low concentration of cesium of the yaf9-deleted strain is not observed in a strain carrying the hog1/ yaf9 double deletion. We conclude that the observed early transcriptional modulation of cell wall genes has a crucial role in S. cerevisiae adaptation to cesium.

Abstract:
Among the various radioactive materials, Cesium is a major source of radioactive contamination and known to be the most dangerous radioactive material, can cause enormous damage to the ecosystem environment when released into the environment. Prussian Blue (PB) has been used as an adsorbent to effectively remove cesium, however it has the problem of being difficult to separate in water. In this study, carbonyl iron (CI) which is known as ferromagnetic synthesized with precursor of PB (FeCl3 and potassium ferricyanide) to solve the problem of PB particles. Adsorption isotherm experiments were also conducted to evaluate the cesium removal ability of the manufactured novel composites. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the novel composite has a cesium removal rate of 99.88% and a distribution coefficient value of 124,900 mL/g. Adsorption behavior follows Langmuir isotherms and the maximum adsorption amount is (qm) 79.3 mg/g. In conclusion, Nano-sized Prussian blue with carbonyl Iron prepared through this study has excellent cesium removal capacity, and it can be completely separated from water when used directly in the cesium treatment field.

Abstract:
Abstract Although a disk-type fly ash filter has shown a good performance in trapping gaseous cesium, it has difficulty in charging filters into a filter container and discharging waste filters containing radioactive cesium from a container by remote action. To solve the difficulty of the disk-type fly ash filter, five types of granule filters, including a ball type, tube type, and sponge-structure type have been made. Among them, the best filter type was chosen through simple crucible tests. The five types of granule filters packed into containers were loaded into five alumina crucibles of 50 cc. Five grams of CsNO3 was used as a gaseous cesium source. They were then placed in a muffle furnace and heated to 900°C and maintained for 2 hours. After the experiment, the weights of the cesium trapped filters were measured. Among the five types of granule filters, the sponge-structure type granule filter was the best, which has the highest trapping capacity of cesium. Its capacity is 0.42 g-Cs/g-filter. The chosen sponge-structure type granule filters and disk-type filters have been tested using a two-zone tube furnace. Cs volatilization and Cs trapping zones were maintained at 900 and 1000°C, respectively. Sixteen grams of CsNO3 was used as a gaseous cesium source. The cesium trapping profile of the sponge-structure type granule filters was almost similar to that of the disk-type fly ash filters. For both cases, cesium was successfully trapped within the third filter.

Abstract:
A large amount of soil was contaminated by radioactive cesium due to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan in 2011. The adsorption behavior of cesium ions (Cs+) is strongly influenced by numerous factors, including the components, structure and weathering conditions of natural soil. The adsorption and ion exchange characteristics of Cs+ ions onto and from natural Japanese rocks with well-known components were studied. Cs+ adsorption onto volcanic rocks (0.9–5.3 mg/g) occurred more easily than that onto plutonic rocks (0.7–0.8 mg/g) due to differences in crystallinity. In addition, the adsorption quantity of cesium increased with increasing lattice water content and content of ion-exchangeable cations in the rock samples. The cesium adsorption ability of rock was inhibited by seawater and coexisting ions in the solution. Cesium adsorption quantities onto andosol, containing the corrosion products, increased approximately 2.7-fold with increasing pH from neutral to basic. Cesium desorption differed depending on the type of salt used, and the desorption rates were highest with ammonium salts. Cs+ desorption from regions such as the soil interlayer and the pores were inhibited by melting of the rock surface.

Abstract:
The removal of cesium from artificially contaminated soil using electrokinetic remediation with nitric and acetic acid as electrolytes had been evaluated. In this study, uncontaminated soil was taken from four different sampling points (i.e., A, B, C, and D) in Kotagede, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. All samples were prepared as cesium contaminated soil (100 mg CsCl/kg soil), which have similar physicochemical characteristics with Fukushima soil, Japan. The electrokinetic remediation (EKR) was conducted using a graphite electrode in a constant voltage of 1.0 Vcm–1 for 7 days without electrolyte pH control, with 1.0 M nitric and acetic acid as electrolytes. The current profile during the EKR was recorded by a data logger for every 10 min. The remaining cesium in the soil was measured by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 852.1 nm. The results showed that the type of acid used in the experiments affected the removal of cesium. The highest cesium removal was achieved when nitric acid was used in the experiment and then followed by acetic acid. For all acids, the removal ability of cesium from soil was in the following order: soil C > soil A > soil D > soil B.

Abstract:
Campbell, D. M. and P. K. Rose. Contribution of voltage-dependent potassium channels to the somatic shunt in neck motoneurons of the cat. J. Neurophysiol. 77: 1470–1486, 1997. The specific membrane resistivity of motoneurons at or near the soma ( R ms) is much lower than the specific membrane resistivity of the dendritic tree ( R md). The goal of the present experiments was to investigate the contribution of tonically active voltage-dependent potassium channels at or near the soma to the low R ms. These channels were blocked with the use of intracellular injections of cesium. Input resistance ( R N), R ms/ R md, a conductance representing voltage-dependent potassium channels on the soma, G K, and a conductance attributed to damage caused by electrode impalement, G Da, were estimated from voltage responses to a step of current. The effect of intracellular injections of cesium on electrotonic structure was determined with the use of two strategies: 1) a population analysis that compared data from two groups of motoneurons, those recorded with potassium acetate electrodes (control group) and those recorded with cesium acetate electrodes after the motoneurons were loaded with cesium; and 2) an analysis of changes in electrotonic structure that occurred over the course of multiple injections of cesium or during similar periods of time in control cells. R N of control and cesium-loaded motoneurons was similar. Over the course of the recordings, R N of control cells usually increased and this increase was associated with a hyperpolarization. In contrast, increases in R N after successive injections of cesium were closely linked to a depolarization. At corresponding membrane potentials, R ms/ R md of cesium-loaded motoneurons was greater than R ms/ R md of control motoneurons. Over the course of cesium injections, R ms/ R md increased and the membrane potential depolarized. In contrast, increases in R ms/ R md observed during the course of recordings from control cells were associated with a hyperpolarization. Compared with control cells at corresponding membrane potentials, G K was less in cesium-loaded cells. Increases in G K that occurred over the course of recordings in control cells were closely coupled to a depolarization. In cesium-loaded cells, G K usually decreased as the cell depolarized during the injections. In control cells, increases in G Da that occurred during the recording period were closely coupled to a depolarization. In contrast, changes in G Da that occurred during cesium injections were not related to the change in membrane potential and did not explain the corresponding changes in R ms/ R md and membrane potential. The results of this study indicate that voltage-dependent potassium channels contribute to the somatic shunt (low R ms) in neck motoneurons and provide a voltage-dependent mechanism for the dynamic regulation of motoneuron electrotonic properties.

Abstract:
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster on March 11, 2011, caused radiation hazards throughout Fukushima Prefecture. Cesium was absorbed by soil and plants and transferred to livestock. Removing radioactive cesium from the bodies of farm animals and humans is essential. It has recently been reported that H2 scavenges reactive oxygen species and suppresses oxidative stress-related diseases. The hypothesis is that ?active hydrogen? (hydrogen water) scavenges active oxygen species. We hypothesized that high-energy electrolytic hydrogen water will effectively decontaminate cesium-exposed chickens. A test group of chickens drank high-energy electrolytic hydrogen water, while the control group drank regular water. Cesium contents in the test group were significantly lower than in the controlled one, possibly because more cesium excretion occurred in the test group than the control group. Lower 137Cs concentrations were found in test-group tissues than in control-group tissues, showing that high-energy electrolytic hydrogen water increased the rate of elimination of 137Cs incorporated into chicken tissue.

Ground state properties of cesium chloride are studied. The calculated ground state properties are consistent with experimental results. Calculated band structure indicates that the cesium chloride structure has an indirect band gap value of 5.46 eV and is an insulator. From the obtained phonon spectra, the cesium chloride structure is dynamically stable along the various directions in the Brillouin zone. Cesium-containing triple cation perovskites are attracting significant attention as suitable tandem partners for silicon solar cells. The perovskite layer of a solar cell must strongly absorb the visible light and be transparent to the infrared light. Optical transmittance measurements of perovskite layers containing different cesium concentrations (0–15%) were carried out on purpose to evaluate the utility of the layers for the fabrication of monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. The transmittance of the layers weakly depended on cesium concentration in the infrared spectral range, and it was more than 0.55 at 997 nm wavelength. It was found that perovskite solar cells containing 10% of cesium concentration show maximum power conversion efficiency.

Constatou-se que a modelagem, além de gerar conceitos sobre o real, amplia o campo conceitual dos conteúdos escolares, integrando áreas da matemática, atribuindo sentidos, criando e praticando as representações simbólicas da linguagem matemática.
