Thermal water from the hot springs around Bugok, South Korea, has the highest discharge temperature (78 °C), and the source of that heat is of primary interest. The key 3He/4He ratio runs along a single air-mixing line between the mantle and the crust, with the latter accounting for 97.0–97.3%. This suggests that the thermal source is radioactive decay in granodiorite, rock that intruded beneath the Cetaceous era sedimentary rock. Thermal water containing Na–HCO3 (SO4) evolved geochemically from stream water and groundwater containing Ca–HCO3. With respect to δ34S, there are two types of therm

Abstract:
Age is an important biological parameter which can be used to guide conservation. It is difficult to assess in wild populations, however, and especially in many cetacean species. Epigenetic analyses now offer an alternative for age estimation. In this thesis, I identified the benefits and considerations of epigenetic age estimators for cetaceans, developed a novel high-throughput sequencing workflow for homology-based epigenetic analyses, and successfully built age estimation assays for both sperm and Southern right whales.

Cetacean species face serious challenges worldwide due to the increasing noise pollution brought to their environment by human activities such as seismic exploration. Regulation of these activities is vaguely defined and uncoordinated. Visual observations and passive listening devices, aimed at preventing conflicts between human wealth and cetaceans’ health have some fundamental limitations and may consequently fail their mitigation purposes. Active sonar technology could be the optimal solution to implement mitigation of such human activities. In my thesis, the proper sonar unit was used to t

The most recent study on cetaceans in Algoa Bay, South Africa, was conducted over 14 years ago. A number of developments in recent years: a deepwater port, proposed oil refinery, increased boating and fishing (commercial and recreational), a proposed Marine Protected Area, and the release of a whale-watching permit, all of which may impact these animals in some way, highlight the need for a baseline study on cetaceans. AbstractThe earliest fossil cetaceans (archaeocetes) dramatically shifted the shape and articulation of the pelvis and hindlimbs during the land-to-sea transition. Archaeocetes were mostly semi-aquatic “walking whales” that used powerful hindlimbs to walk on land and swim to reach new aquatic sources of food. However, skeletons of the latest diverging lineages of archaeocetes, the basilosaurids, showed that the pelvis initially lost articulation with the sacrum, and hindlimbs were reduced and encased within the body wall. Consequently, basilosaurids were no longer able to bear their weight on
