Abstract:
The stratigraphic relationships and sedimentary environments of the Silurian, Devonian and Lower Carboniferous lithologies in the Keel area are deduced and described. This was accomplished by the analysis of over 10.000M. of diamond drilled core from the area. The oldest rocks are Silurian shales with turbidites. Deposition was in forearc basins in an active subduction zone on the north margin of lapetus. The area was one of net erosion in the Lower Devonian following the continental collision which closed lapetus. The Upper Devonian of the area is represented by the Microconglomerate lying unconformably on the Silurian. This lithology was produced by braided streams draining the immediate Keel area. The earliest Carboniferous sediments are an assemblage of sandstones and conglomerates. The Lower Quartz Sandstone was laid down in sandy braided streams. The drainage basin of the Keel rivers was considerably larger by this time and sediment was derived from western Ireland. Uplift in western Ireland made quartz pebbles and higher stream velocities to transport them available. These pebbles formed the Quartz Pebble Conglomerate deposited in pebbly braided streams. Lowering of the source area by erosion resulted in reduced sediment grain size. Sandy braided streams again dominated the Keel area and deposited the Upper Quartz Sandstone. Owing to the sea transgressing from the south marginal marine sediments were then deposited in the area, these being represented by the Lower Mixed Beds. During the advancing transgression facies belts were moving northwards. Lagoonal (Navan Micrite) deposits were laid down behind a barrier complex now represented by the Upper Mixed Beds. To seaward of the barrier shallow marine calcareous sediments were deposited on a homoclinal ramp. These are represented in the Keel area by the Shaley Pales and the Bioclastic Limestone Unit. Further to seaward Waulsortian type mudmounds were deposited on the deeper ramp. Owing to the transgressive regime existing in the Lower Carboniferous each facies belt moved northwards over the Keel area. At the close of the Courceyan partial subsidence of the ramp took place and basinal/slope shales with turbidites (Calp) were deposited as lateral equivilants of the shallower Oakport Limestone on the surrounding shelf remnent.

Hartmann, Katharina, and Malte Zimmermann. "Morphological focus marking in Gùrùntùm (West Chadic)." Universität Potsdam, 2006. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2008/1952/.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper presents an in-depth study of focus marking in Gùrùntùm, a West Chadic language spoken in Bauchi Province of Northern Nigeria. Focus in Gùrùntùm is marked morphologically by means of a focus marker a, which typically precedes the focus constituent. Even though the morphological focus-marking system of Gùrùntùm allows for a lot of fine-grained distinctions in information structure (IS) in principle, the language is not entirely free of focus ambiguities that arise as the result of conflicting IS- and syntactic requirements that govern the placement of focus markers. We show that morphological focus marking with a applies across different types of focus, such as newinformation, contrastive, selective and corrective focus, and that a does not have a second function as a perfectivity marker, as is assumed in the literature. In contrast, we show at the end of the paper that a can also function as a foregrounding device at the level of discourse structure.

Abstract:
We argue that the standard focus theories reach their limits when confronted with the focus systems of the Chadic languages. The backbone of the standard focus theories consists of two assumptions, both called into question by the languages under consideration. Firstly, it is standardly assumed that focus is generally marked by stress. The Chadic languages, however, exhibit a variety of different devices for focus marking. Secondly, it is assumed that focus is always marked. In Tangale, at least, focus is not marked consistently on all types of constituents. The paper offers two possible solutions to this dilemma.

Modgill, Arti. "Representation of identity as cultural citizenship practice : positioning Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, and Gurinder Chadha in the context of postcolonial theory." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/38418/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research on cultural citizenship focuses on issues of identity and belonging in multicultural societies and examines the political, economic, and cultural aspects of community membership in local, national, and transnational groups. Postcolonial research into colonial and neocolonial representations of individual and national cultural identities offers a means of interrogating hegemonic discursive practices of Orientalism, neocolonialism and globalization as they relate to the representation of cultural citizenship. This dissertation positions the representation of Indian cultural identities in the films of Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, and Gurinder Chadha as practices of cultural citizenship that attempt to reposition the Indian as a local identity in three Western multicultural societies: Canada, the US and the UK. It draws on postcolonial, gender, and literary theory to textually analyze the discourses underlying the filmic representations of marginalized identities by incorporating the theories of Said, Spivak, Mohanty, and Bhabha into a socio-cultural analysis of Indian identity construction. The study utilizes the Lacanian theory of the mirror stage within the canonical writings of postcolonial theorists like hooks, Said, Fanon, and Bhabha, all of whom use Lacan’s work to describe the splitting of the subject from the Other in order to illustrate the production of the derogatory figure of the Indian as inscribed in Orientalist, and Western/ Eurocentric discourses. This figure is precisely that produced in and consumed through Bollywood films. Chapter one offers an analysis of the Lacanian subject formation as a moment in which the spectator of these films views the cinematic representation of the imago of Indian cultural identity—which in these films can be read as sociocultural constructions of local non-alien figures with community memberships in the adopted homelands—as practices of cultural citizenship acquisition affecting both the alienation of the characters and the spectators. My second chapter, by revising the feminist perspectives of Spivak and Mohanty, strategically locates the subject position of these diasporic filmmakers as intellectuals to relate the representation of Indian cultural identity as a cultural practice within the praxis of Western film. In doing so, it aims to unearth the Indian woman in the West as the cousin of the subaltern woman, positioning her vis-à-vis a Western and local identity within a multicultural society. In my exploration of the filmmakers’ practices of cultural citizenship I relate their community membership to the concept of Dharma as a culturally grounded feminist and postcolonial writing back to the subordinate representation of female Indians in their multiple locations. In the third chapter I offer that cultural citizenship as a practice of representation of visible minorities constructed by these filmmakers offers a necessary splintering of the dominant national identities of their multicultural societies that illuminates the hybridity of cultural identities and the plurality of national identities. The filmmakers achieve this revision by positioning the Indian as local of, rather than Other to, multicultural society. The discussion of Canadian multiculturalism in this chapter illustrates that these filmmakers’ representations of plurality in their construction of national identities, splinters the representation of white monocultural national identities prevalent in Western multicultural nations. My thesis contributes to the fields of postcolonial, literary, and cultural theory in the following ways: a) I add to the discussion of Lacan’s subject formation, and the mirroring of the Other and the alienation of the immigrant, by examining the imago as a reflection of identity which can offer spectators a moment of belonging within an adopted homeland as a cultural citizenship practice; b) I add to the debate on cultural citizenship by relating the historic concept of Dharma to my discussion of the intellectual production of female identities and explicate how its counter-narrative challenges to the gender roles of Indian men and women. Ultimately I conclude that the representation of Indian cultural identity by these filmmakers and the representation of the imago as external spectral image of the Indian, immigrant, or visible Other, discloses a discursive strategy of social cohesion in its challenging representation of plural national identities which are local, multiracial, and multicultural.

Vafaeian, Ghazaleh. "The Finite Independency : A study of the relevance of the notion of finiteness in Hdi." Thesis, Stockholm University, Stockholm University, Section for General Linguistics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-28912.

Full text
Abstract:

This paper argues that there is a finiteness distinction in Hdi and that the notion is of value for a description of the language. The definition of finiteness suitable for the language has been suggested to be the one given by Anderson (2007) combined with Bisang (2007). The finite clauses are argued to be the pragmatically independent ones while the non-finite clauses are argued to be the pragmatically dependent. However, no morphological reductions were found in the non-finite clauses relative to the finite ones. What is more, negation in Hdi shows a nontypical behaviour regarding finiteness properties as there are aspectual distinctions made for dependent clauses that are not made for independent. Verbless clauses and imperatives may be viewed as finite and non-finite depending on their capacity to licence independent predication or, alternatively, they may be viewed as not displaying finiteness properties at all. The latter is argued to be preferred in order to avoid a redundant definition of finiteness.

Verdizade, Allahverdi. "Selected topics in the grammar and lexicon of Matal." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för lingvistik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-160776.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes basic grammatical features and lexicon of Matal, a Chadic language spoken by around 18 000 people in northern Cameroon. A translation of the New Testament is used as a parallel text for the purposes of this study. The identified language structures are compared with other Chadic languages. The results show that Matal is overall typical for the language family, except for the pronominal system, which lacks a clusivity distinction. Nouns and adjectives have a limited morphology, only expressing number as a grammatical category, whereas verbs have many categories that are expressed morphologically, by prefixation and suffixation. For finite verb forms, subject prefixes are obligatory. Tense is expressed either by altered tone in the stem vowel or morphologically. Several verbal suffixes with number and person variants have been identified, although their functions have not been entirely clarified. A system of complex adpositions that make extensive use of grammaticalized body concepts has also been inquired, within which the phenomenon of preposition agreement has been identified. Basic syntactic features, such as word order, negation and topicalization are also addressed. The analysis of the lexicon demonstrates that the basic vocabulary is mainly inherited from earlier stages of the language, but a large number of lexical loans in various semantic domains have also entered Matal.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the music group Extempore since its foundation by Jaroslav Jeronym Neduha in 1973 until its annulment by Mikolas Chadima in 1981. The thesis shows the important moments of the group and its members. Jaroslav Jeronym Neduha was Extempore's frontman by the year 1979 then he left the group and its management handed to Mikolas Chadima. Both gave to Extempore its characteristic style in the musical aspect, lyrics and performance. Extempore gained lots of fans, so the State Security focused on them as a obnoxius music group. The thesis has the aim to reveal Extempore's role in Czech musical underground. Firstly I defined alternative culture in relation to underground and official culture with focus to the music. Also I described Prague's unofficial big beat scene between 1973 - 1981. Primarily the thesis is focused on alternative music scene and musical underground. The review also contains other noncommercial movements during that time - folk association Safran and younger musical movement New Wave that inspirated Chadima's Extempore. Since the 1979 Extempore has been more and more pressed to the illegality until they got ban to perform their music in any Prague's club. Anyways they pushed for public performances and they kept up in free creation. An important outcome is fact that...
