Abstract:
Abstract: This article includes a review of the basic scientific publications of Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. Attempts to reconceptualize ancient rhetoric in its part on argumentation are presented. Conclusions are drawn after reviewing the publications of other scholars studying argumentation. It is presented as part of fundamental rhetorical knowledge, together with projections into the legal/legal sphere and into politics. Projections of argumentation in the speaker's behavior and in his goal to achieve persuasion while respecting ethical norms, rules and morality are identified. Intersections between rhetoric, philosophy, and argumentation are presented. The contribution of rhetoric to humanistic knowledge is demonstrated through a critical review of the scholarly publications of Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrecht-Tyteca and other scholars publishing in the fields of rhetoric and philosophy in the 20th and 21st centuries. Keywords: rhetoric, argumentation, argument, philosophy, Haim Perelman, Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores an understudied aspect of Jewish rhetoric—restrictions against speaking lashon hara (evil speech, libel, gossip)—to contribute to the field’s understanding of Jewish rhetorical traditions. In reading Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan’s (1838-1933) treatise Chafetz Chaim (1873), this article shows how Jewish speech laws function as an ontological, nonagonistic, and ethical community-oriented rhetoric. In reading the Chafetz Chaim, this article shows that Kagan’s exigency in compiling the speech laws was in response to anti-Semitism and Enlightenment era Haskalah Judaism. The dialogic rhetoric found in Chafetz Chaim provides ethical and methodological lessons for contemporary rhetorical scholars, lessons that resonate with important twentieth century Jewish rhetorics.

"Validating the performance of the Empirical Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Model (E-CHAIM) with in situ observations from DMSP and CHAMP." Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate 9 (2019): A21. http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/swsc/2019021.

Full text
Abstract:
The Empirical Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Model (E-CHAIM) is a new empirical model of high latitude ionospheric electron density. While the introductory studies regarding E-CHAIM include validations, E-CHAIM’s topside model was notably excluded from independent validation using datasets not included in the model fitting. In this study, we undertake such a validation using in situ electron density observations from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) constellation of satellites and the Challenging Mini-satellite Payload (CHAMP) mission. Through this validation, we show that E-CHAIM generally outperforms the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) at DMSP orbit (~830 km altitude), with RMS errors of 8.3–9.8 × 109 e/m3 versus the IRI’s 1.2–1.3 × 1010 e/m3. E-CHAIM’s improvement over the IRI is consistent at all latitudes but is particularly noted in sub-auroral regions and is mainly limited to summer and equinox periods. At CHAMP orbit, E-CHAIM and the IRI are found to perform largely comparably, with E-CHAIM outperforming the IRI only marginally with RMS errors of 7.11 × 1010 e/m3 versus the IRI’s 7.48 × 1010 e/m3. This improvement is found to be largely constrained to sub-auroral latitudes with both models performing comparably at higher latitudes. An observed tendency for the IRI to overestimate electron density in the near-peak (at CHAMP orbit) and underestimate electron density at higher altitudes (DMSP orbit) appears to be consistent with previous work, which identified this pattern to result from shortcomings in the NeQuick topside function curvature at high latitudes.

Abstract:
This personal essay has a dual purpose of relating the transgenerational transmission of the Holocaust survivor Chaim Pomerancblum’s life story, and of reflecting, at the same time, on this non-canonical practice in the academic world regarding the use of first person narrative. First, I will discuss and explain this self-reflective approach by drawing on post-memorial literary and theoretical works. Next, I will narrate, in a fragmentary and metatextual way, the life story of Chaim, my maternal grandfather.

Abstract:
Monika Polit, „Moja żydowska dusza nie obawia się dnia sądu”. Mordechaj Chaim Rumkowski. Prawda i zmyślenie, Warszawa: Stowarzyszenie Centrum Badań nad Zagładą Żydów, 2012.

Abstract:
This article uses Chaim Perelman's theories of argumentation to examine a recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Promoting Health: Intervention Strategies from Social and Behavioral Research (2000). The IOM's text explores social and behavioral research to devise multipronged intervention strategies; it focuses on social, economic, behavioral, and political health as a means of assuring population health—and thereby expands the conventional boundaries of public health. Since Chaim Perelman's rhetoric is seldom applied in the field of health communication, employing his ideas to consider the role of style, arrangement, and argument in such a cutting-edge document can illuminate public health writing, as well as shed new light on Perelmanian rhetoric.

Abstract:
The article is the first to consider the impact of the early work of Chaim Soutine, produced in the South of France around 1920, on a circle of painters working in Britain some 30 years later, notably Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, as well as on the writer David Sylvester who promoted both their work and the key French artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Soutine who seemed to epitomise the new ‘existentialist’ climate. After the war Soutine became a cult figure in London, as he did in contemporary Paris and New York. He embodied the idea of the ‘tragic’ artist in his still-life imagery of flayed animals, his uncompromising, heavily-laden paint surfaces, and in his identity as a Jew who had died in 1943, an indirect victim of the Nazi occupation of France. I try to identify which works in particular were known to the English artists, themselves all Jewish except for Bacon, and to describe the very different ways in which they reacted to Soutine's art and adapted its lessons to their own artistic purposes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The publications to date have characterized Henryk Bekker (1886-1942) as a political and self-government activist and President of the Council of the Jewish Religious Community. None of them has yet discussed his activities in the field of construction and architecture. He was born in Białystok as Chaim Beker, presumably in a family of assimilated Jews who often “Polonized” their first and last names. It is probably for that reason that in the later years of his life he was known as Henryk Bekker. From 1906 he studied in Munich at the Königlich Bayerische Technische Hochschule, where he received a degree of Construction Engineer in 1911. Little is known about his life during the next dozen or so years except that he married a Lublin resident Helena Zynger and stayed with her in eastern Ukraine, where their daughter Irena was born in 1918. Somewhere at the beginning of 1922 the Bekker family came to Lublin and took up their residence at Bernardyńska St. no. 24/3. In Lublin H. Bekker worked as a freelance construction engineer. The current state of research makes it possible to connect his architectural and construction work with 27 construction designs, mostly commissioned by Jewish investors. They comprise buildings of different status, size and architectural value. He executed the projects in Lublin and the Lublin region: these included large tenement houses and tenement annexes, schools, ritual bathhouses, shops, craftsmen’s workshops, small industrial plants and waterworks/sewage installations. Among the buildings distinguished by both the size scale and the architectural level, we should mention the constructions in Lublin, including two buildings built for the Jewish Cooperative Housing Association “Spółdom” (at Probostwo St. no. 19 and Wieniawska St. no. 6), tenement houses at Okopowa St. no. 10, Krótka St. no. 4 and Ogrodowa St. no. 19 and the Perec House. Those buildings were associated with the trend of modernism. Their architecture was characterized by simplified building bodies, functional interior solutions, and reduction of decorative detail. Although none of them displayed any special avant-garde forms or avant-garde technical solutions, they all contributed to the modernization of the architecture of interwar Lublin.
