Russo, Anna Cecilia.

Abstract:
It is clear that objects of design, especially design furniture in the case of chairs, not only fulfi ll a social function in both the private and public spheres, but they can also take on a symbolic role and produce an aesthetic experience. Based in pragmatic thinking, the present thesis aims to develop a critical line of questioning for studying the role played by design. As Nelson Goodman claims in his Ways of Worldmaking, works of art are not the only things that can symbolise. Our goal consists in showing that, insofar as they are objects of design, chairs also function communicatively. Drawing from a corpus of eleven diff erent types of chairs, put together according to two characteristic criteria related to the evaluation and description of works of design – i.e. innovation and distribution – we fi rst analyse chairs in terms of still life, that is to say, as isolated objects. This preliminary analysis allows us to underscore, in a subsequent move, the intimate relationship that prevails between the user’s body and a chair, which now becomes a living object, one that is enriched by this very relationship

Abstract:
Work chair is considered as an important element for the users to improve comfort in work environment. An ergonomic chair design and engineering is therefore considered very important for its usability and comfort view of point for the users. The aim of the thesis is to improve the mobility and ergonomics of the existing chair in all aspects. Ergonomically designed chairs are important for long time seated workers to increase their productivity and also to reduce low back injuries which arise due to the poor design chairs in ergonomic aspects. In addition, ergonomically designed chairs help to increase the seating comfortability of the chair users. QFD and waterfall model was followed for the work execution. In this paper, we discuss a design of an ergonomically efficient chair with simple adjustments which gives more comfortability. This will give us a better likelihood to stay in a neutral position. The Ergonomics of the chair is improved in various steps. This thesis focuses on many ideas in which some of them are implemented and evaluated.

Abstract:
I Remember…, a series of drawings, is based on personal social experiences starting from the age of thirteen. This series begins with a memory of the first time I had to speak to a room full of people and the unexpected events of that followed. My own relationship with one of the primary subjects, the chair refers to memories of being raised in a home where certain furnishings were “off-limits.” Even more important is the presence of a cryptic narrative, fractured and dreamlike, similar to the style of writing created by Alain Robbe-Grillet. It has been a lifetime goal to create drawings that are interactive with the viewer. The baroque embellished chairs and piano provide a point of departure encouraging contemplative involvement by the viewer conceptually through imagery and physically through scale. Also, showing multiple viewpoints of the object simultaneously creates an atmosphere that is dreamlike and ghostly.

Gallagher, Judith. "A Study of Department Chairs in Two-Year Colleges: A Comparison of the 1992 International Community College Chair Survey to Department Chairs in the North Texas Community College Consortium." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4329/.

Full text
Abstract:
A study was conducted to gather information from department chairs serving in the 26 two-year colleges that are members of the North Texas Community College Consortium using the International Community College Chair Survey (ICCCS). The ICCCS is designed to gather insights into four aspects of the chairs' professional lives: personal characteristics, responsibilities challenges, and strategies. The study compared the demographic data and the respondents' perceptions of the challenges their units will face in the next 5 years to the original survey conducted in 1992. The regional sample included 616 first-line administrators, and a 30.5% response rate was achieved. The demographic distribution of the regional respondents shows significant shifts in gender, age, education, experience and release time but constancy in race and stability of the population. Similarities between the two samples exist regarding the challenges of maintaining program quality, providing technology, and managing financial issues. The regional sample expresses greater concern about the challenges of distance education, external accountability, and student matters.

Abstract:
Socrates would say that the God created the form of the chair, that the craftsmen make other chairs according to this form, and that the artists create artistic chairs according to chairs made by the craftsmen. There is a truth in these ideas. The chair is the chair, it has its own form. It does not take the form of a piano, nor that of a bed. These ideas lead to the definition, the form, the manufacture, the use, the transformation and the significance of the chair. The human beings, from ancient Egypt, attributed two functions to the chair: one is material (sit) and the other is immaterial (symbolize). If the chair is used in a social, political or artistic activity (transformed, destroyed, rebuilt, etc.), it is symbolic (or symbolizing), this is the only condition where the chair can denote and signify. Get into contact with the chair so that it can mean! A change appeared from the end of the 19th century, designers designed and built a wide variety of innovative chairs, both utilitarian and artistic when the artists used simple and ordinary chairs or classical chairs in their art works. Although designers have sought new forms, but their chairs were still provided with the basic form (legs, seat and backrest) providing the fundamental function : sit. It appears that the form of the chair has already been defined. Who defined the form of the chair ? What does the chair mean?

Abstract:
This project is a composition of the intersectionality between process, structure, and materiality, and an obsession, fixation, and fetishization of the simplistic yet repetitive ‘chain’ form. The thematic infatuation with the chain form became evident throughout my work in Spring 2014, while working with bronze, wood, and brass at the Slade School of Fine art in London, England. This fall I expanded on this concept to create my own representations of the chain form, abstracting and deterring it from any sociocultural origins, contexts, or landscapes.

Chateau, Canguilhem Johann. "La chair virtuelle du cyberérotisme." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BOR30017/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this multidisciplinary research is to define and assess the concept of “cybereroticism”. This notion is of such significance in the « virtual body » representation that it now seems possible to consider it an emblematic figure of the way the body is implicated in the contemporary field. Our method, combining aesthetics, cultural studies and psychoanalysis, is set up in three steps. First of all, we will provide a database highlighting the conceptual framework, which will allow us to create the initial terms of reference. In order to achieve this, we will provide a corpus of serious movies reflecting a spontaneous approach of this topic, mainly eXistenZ, Demonlover, The Cell and The Lawmmower Man. A second database will be achieved by observing video games, including pornographic and hentai games, in order to identify the conditions of the experience in its current state. Lastly, we will demonstrate how the persistence of the themes of violence and sadism, as well as the abandon of the body, its renewal or its reconfiguration, refer ultimately to anguish as a key aspect of the experience. This research hypothesis will eventually represent the last part of this thesis

Exquisite is defined as carefully selected or sought out. I believe myself to be a selected soul placed in a body of circumstance. My work is self-explorative and telling of those circumstances in hopes of evoking empathy. Our bodies function and exist on many different levels. What I understand as normal for most differs vastly from what is normal for me. I aim to offer my perspective on the world, establish understanding, and blur the lines of normalcy.

Abstract:
A detailed account of how failure can lead to success. Through my attempts to design a chair, I developed a method of bending plywood using Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) routing. Ultimately, I considered my chair a failure. The method I had developed to wood was not suitable for my chair because it left the material too flexible. Determined to find another application for my wood bending method, I applied it to a new series of lamps. Bending thin plywood with a similar cut pattern on the CNC Laser cutter gave the perfect balance of flexibility and strength for lamp shades. Simple as the new lamps may be, they leave numerous possibilities for development in scale and shape.

Zhang, Fangjin. "Optimising additive manufacturing for fine art sculpture and digital restoration of archaeological artefacts." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14886.

Full text
Abstract:
Additive manufacturing (AM) has shown itself to be beneficial in many application areas, including product design and manufacture, medical models and prosthetics, architectural modelling and artistic endeavours. For some of these applications, coupling AM with reverse engineering (RE) enables the utilisation of data from existing 3D shapes. This thesis describes the application of AM and RE within sculpture manufacture, in order to optimise the process chains for sculpture reproduction and relic conservation and restoration. This area poses particular problems since the original artefacts can often be fragile and inaccessible, and the finishing required on the AM replicas is both complex and varied. Several case studies within both literature and practical projects are presented, which cover essential knowledge of producing large scale sculptures from an original models as well as a wide range of artefact shapes and downstream finishing techniques. The combination of digital technologies and traditional art requires interdisciplinary knowledge across engineering and fine art. Also, definitions and requirements (e.g. 'accuracy'), can be applied as both engineering and artistic terms when specifications and trade-offs are being considered. The thesis discusses the feasibility for using these technologies across domains, and explores the potential for developing new market opportunities for AM. It presents and analyses a number of case study projects undertaken by the author with a view to developing cost and time models for various processes used. These models have then been used to develop a series of "process maps", which enable users of AM in this area to decide upon the optimum process route to follow, under various circumstances. The maps were validated and user feedback obtained through the execution of two further sculpture manufacturing projects. The thesis finishes with conclusions about the feasibility of the approach, its constraints, the pros and cons of adopting AM in this area and recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
As part of a comparative study, this work aims to analyze, by bringing them together for the first time, the creative worlds of the Italian writer Dino Buzzati (1906 – 1972) and his French colleague Claude Louis-Combet (1932 –), according to the flesh and soul duality, which is a constant in their works. Both authors, through the fictionalized autobiography, the mythology reworking, as an original vision of figurative art, expressed sensitivity and imagination surprisingly close. They have been accompanied by legendary figures and fellow artists, to guide the reader into the mystical and fantasy dimension of his unconscious

Abstract:
Accidental behavior chains are a common problem in dog training. Many handlers inadvertently reinforce undesirable behaviors. The behavior analytic literature already contains articles describing methods of breaking chains; however, those methods either are not used in dog training for practical purposes or are ineffective in dog training. This experiment investigated two ways to break a behavior chain, including extending the chain and introducing a delay into the chain. The results of extending the chain showed that it is possible to decrease the target behavior using this method, but it was not eliminated in this study. Adding a delay into the behavior chain resulted in a quick elimination of the target behavior.

Full text
Abstract:
The early medieval abbey church of Conques, located in a treacherous mountain region of southern France, received few visitors until the relics of the virgin martyr Ste. Foy were brought there. Among her abilities, Ste. Foy was credited with the power to provide protection from capture and to free prisoners. The themes of bondage and liberation are found throughout the church in the sculpture, grillwork and especially in the Liber miraculorum. This paper argues that the repetitive imagery of chains and release from bondage had a twofold function which increased the wealth and power of the monks at Conques. First, the images evoked the power of the Ste. Foy to absolve and release one from the bonds of sin through pilgrimage and donation to this church, and second, the images referred to Ste. Foy's renowned power to provide protection and free prisoners, powers especially attractive to those involved in the Reconquista in Spain.

Abstract:

Emerging Markets are defined as nations with social or business activity in the process of rapid growth and industrialization. Market penetration of products across the country is an extremely difficult task due to poor infrastructure and prohibitive costs of infrastructure. The motivation for this thesis is to 1) develop a framework to reduce the complexity of the study by clustering a diverse pool of products into fewer major classes of products sharing similar features, 2) design a network optimization model to better serve the end consumer in two different states in India, and 3) assess and improve the scalability of the distribution network. The results of this research directly enhance the distribution models used to scale production and efficiently use supply chains in low to middle income countries, leveraging existing resources (retail outlets) to deliver goods in two Indian states and can be generalized to other states. The SKU classification methodology (clustering) can be generalized to other classes of products that logistics companies are currently delivering in rural India (food, pantry, commodities,'...). To the extent of our knowledge, this optimization network modeling has not been researched yet in developing economies. It was found that our methodology could help retailers get access to customers more efficiently. We finished by determining the optimal scalability strategy using cost effectiveness and service level effectiveness for two different Indian states, Maharashtra and Bihar. Abstract:
The Australian music industry is growing and developing yet specific information about the ways in which distribution systems develop is limited. In this study I examined the growth and change of the Australian music value chain. This includes the development of digital distribution systems and the effect that peer-to-peer technology has on system development, specifically the disintermediation between consumers and artists to the detriment of the multinational value chains. The drivers of this change are broken into social and technical elements in order to describe the growth and change occurring. The method used included a comprehensive literature review and use of secondary data from key music industry associations. The Australian music industry is a subset of the global industry and is led by foreign markets and their methods in which music content moves from the creators to the consumers. The consumption patterns of Australian music consumers are changing. The overall value of the music industry is dropping as the new digital downloads market emerges and the overall volume of sales increases; this reflects similar trends in foreign markets. CD single sales have dropped and digital single sales (in MP3 format) have increased. However, there needs to be a balance in the future development of Australian music distribution systems between the needs of music consumers and the sustainability of music companies, where there is both connectivity and steady revenue flow. There are technical elements that have caused a movement away from the traditional forms of music distribution as new technologies facilitate the change, such as Apple's iPod and broadband Internet connections. Advancement of distribution systems has increased piracy levels and the response has been the implementation of digital rights management (DRM), which prevents connectivity. There are also social elements that affect growth and change such as connectivity, or the consumers freedom to choose when, where and how to listen to their music. When music product has a restriction placed upon it its value to the consumer drops. Multinational music companies have failed to recognise the value users place on the freedom to pick and choose and have tried to control rather than to co-develop systems that meets both parties needs.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
As the U.S. population diversifies, so do its higher education institutions. Leadership at these institutions should be prepared for this diversification of students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this study was to gain greater knowledge about the leadership styles and cultural sensitivity of department chairs. Survey research was used to determine if department chairs’ leadership styles correlated with their cultural sensitivity. The target population was department chairs from public universities in the state of Texas. The survey was distributed to 406 randomly selected department chairs. The participants completed three measures: Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LDBQ) for leadership style, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) for cultural sensitivity, and a demographic questionnaire (gender, age range, race/ethnicity, and years of service as department chair). The sample included 165 usable surveys (40% return rate). The department chairs were primarily male (72%), White (78%), and over 50 (71%) years of age. First, a statistically significant negative correlation (r = -.431, p < .0001) occurred between LBDQ overall scores and overall ISS scores: As chairs scored higher on leadership ability, they scored lower on intercultural sensitivity. Second, leadership style by demographic variable displayed mixed results. No significant difference was found for leadership style by age, gender, years of service, or region of service. For ethnicity, White participants scored significantly lower than Minority participants on the LBDQ scales of consideration (t [162] = -2.021, p = .045), structure (t [162] = -2.705, p = .008), and overall (t [162] = -2.864, p = .005). Minority participants might work more diligently to increase their leadership abilities based on their higher LDBQ scores. Third, findings on intercultural sensitivity by demographic variable were mixed. No statistical significance was observed between any of the ISS scales and age, gender, years of service, and region. For ethnicity, Minority participants’ scores showed significantly lower intercultural sensitivity than White participants scores on two of six ISS subscales: interaction enjoyment (t = -2.46, p = .015) and respect (t = 2.107, p = .037). It was concluded that the Minority and White department chairs’ leadership style and intercultural sensitivity differences could be due in part to differences in the chairs’ ethnic affiliations, associated cultural backgrounds, and views of dominant versus non-dominant cultures. Recommendations for study are included.

Paris 4, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA040145.

Full text
Abstract:
The aesthetic quality and the extent of the work accomplished by Maurice Chabas as well as his evolution of thinking have focused our interest for this important artist, unfairly forgotten in the symbolist movement. All through his artwork, Maurice Chabas searched a spiritual quest which he translated through his paintings into a noble and serene harmony. His imagination and desire to innovate led him to diversify his technique through a purification and simplification of the form. At the beginning, his work was academic but expressed rapidly symbolic tendencies reminding Puvis de Chavannes. Maurice Chabas was a fervent defendant of the Rose+Croix. He participated in all their art exhibitions. Later, the artist was also tempted to investigate the techniques of impressionism and synthetic art. At the end of his career, his work became gradually more esotheric, bright and colourful. This style of work conducted him to abstraction which (he thought) will provide the ways to the "mysteries" of the Christian religion. One of the primary objectives of this thesis has been to establish a biography of Maurice Chabas. Our aim was also to provide a study of his theoritical artistic principles and an analytical investigation of his work. To highlight the personality of Maurice Chabas and the magnitude of his work, we currently referred to his personal documents, press artcles and exhibitions catalogues. The second part of this thesis is aiming to establish, to the largest possible extent, an inventory of his paintings, work orders and writings. This study is covered by the reasoned catalogue of the artist

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to produce new knowledge concerning the perceived effects of blockchain technology on transaction costs within supply chains handling physical goods through the created and hypothetical TCE-matrix. The study followed an abductive research approach where initial found facts were matched against an appropriate theory in order to be put in context and understood. The study’s data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with experts who were active within the research area and chosen based on their practical experience. The results imply that blockchain holds the possibility to affect five out of nine cells within the TCE-matrix out of the experts’ perception, through its increased trust and transparency between its supply chain actors within the network and the enhanced traceability of physical goods. This study further highlights practical implications concerning the technology’s adoption in practice. It is concluded that the blockchain is perceived to have an effect on transaction costs activities out of the TCE-matrix, which is found to be partly applicable when assessing the blockchains potential effect on transaction cost activities in a general manner, where further studies should apply the matrix in the assessment of one specific transaction to take full advantage of the matrix’ potential.

Abstract:
Since the beginning of humankind, architecture has been a sacred source for all civilizations, and that has provided a gateway for man to reach the heavens above. In terms of concept and value, Persian art and architecture is considered as a rich source to be acknowledged. Within Persian architecture, the emphasis was placed strongly on beauty and sacred geometry; Persians calculated the proportions of heaven reflected upon them in the dimensions of buildings on the earth. Iranian culture has utilized the written word as an art form; this goes beyond normal means of communication. Iranian calligraphers produced eloquent styles and patterns through their divine talent, and this was displayed in the architecture. Parviz Tanavoli, as the greatest contemporary artist of Iran, has a strong tendency to be attracted to words and letters which has a long history in Iranian culture. Experimenting through aspects of cultural interaction in fine and applied arts has led to the understanding that when aesthetic elements of cultures are used to create a new design, it leads to both a new aesthetic creation and a fresh understanding of the cultures involved. This collection was designed and manufactured by concentrating on organic and curved forms and utilizing them in the design practice, while having a touch on cultural elements such as patterns and alphabets. The curved abstract shapes create a conceptual harmony, depicted in Persian patterns via functional three dimensional pieces.

Abstract:
At the Salon d'Automne of 1929, French designer René Herbst (1891-1982) inaugurated the Chaises Sandows, a series of mass produced chairs built with seamless tubular steel and brightly colored elastic straps (sandows). The chairs were deemed beautiful modern art by the Union des Artists Modernes (U.A.M.), a revolutionary artist collective that Herbst co-founded the same year. The group defined beautiful objects as those that provided psychological repose and were financially attainable for every class, highly functional and socially engaged. Based on the naturalism of Hyppolite Taine, the U.A.M. believed that if beautiful art like the Chaise Sandows was consumed en masse, an egalitarian utopia would be produced. This thesis offers comprehensive understanding of their project as defined by Herbst and their manifesto and the group's connection with larger political concerns during the interwar period.

Abstract:
Long-range dependence in discrete and continuous time Markov chains over a countable state space is defined via embedded renewal processes brought about by visits to a fixed state. In the discrete time chain, solidarity properties are obtained and long-range dependence of functionals are examined. On the other hand, the study of LRD of continuous time chains is defined via the number of visits in a given time interval. Long-range dependence of Markov chains over a non-countable state space is also carried out through positive Harris chains. Embedded renewal processes in these chains exist via visits to sets of states called proper atoms. Examples of these chains are presented, with particular attention given to long-range dependent Markov chains in single-server queues, namely, the waiting times of GI/G/1 queues and queue lengths at departure epochs in M/G/1 queues. The presence of long-range dependence in these processes is dependent on the moment index of the lifetime distribution of the service times. The Hurst indexes are obtained under certain conditions on the distribution function of the service times and the structure of the correlations. These processes of waiting times and queue sizes are also examined in a range of M/P/2 queues via simulation (here, P denotes a Pareto distribution).

Abstract:
The chair, both subject and object, is called on as a witness to bring to light the relationship between banality and creativity, taking as our starting point the issues which informed artistic conception in the 1960s. We then put the fruits of our theoretical reflection to the test in our own work : it is because of its very banality that the chair is a source of creativity. This thesis is thus both testimony to, and an experiment on, art today which assumes its artistic constitution through the process of an outwardly ordinary and banal object, through that fragment of reality (both life and art), which is a chair, in its encounter with art

Full text
Abstract:
The research aim was to gain a more detailed understanding of the operation of different key segments for fresh produce supply chains originating in the Highlands Provinces in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The research investigates a number of supply chain dimensions of effectiveness which include, value creation and integration of processes, logistics, quality, information, relationship/vertical integration and overall effectiveness. These were linked together in SC framework. Two potato chains were investigated, one formal, the other informal. The informal potato chain involves small holder farmers, input suppliers and local markets including kai bars and the urban market. The chain originates and ends within the Western Highlands Province. The formal potato chain has farmers, input suppliers, wholesaler/marker, transport companies (trucking and coastal shipping agents), supermarkets, hotels and kai bars. This chain originates in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province and ends in Port Moresby, National Capital District. The effectiveness of both the formal and informal chains was identified, and comparisons were made to see how each chain differed. The informal chain was found to have different problems to the formal chains. However, participants to both chains demonstrate a high entrepreneurial behavior. A key finding of the study was that the chains spread their risk by operating in multiple market segments and this can help to solve issues with variable quality. The marketers in each chain position themselves in these different market segments. It was clear from this work that focusing on functions and not the whole chain can lead to a distorted view of chain performance. For example, for the informal chain, a focus on logistics issues, particularly poor roads and problems with availability of seeds, can misrepresent the effectiveness of this chain. Therefore, it was concluded that it is important to look at the overall performance of each chain rather than looking specifically at particular chain functions in isolation.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a reflexion on eighteenth-century sculpture, between 1680 and 1830. Its intention is to link theory and pratice, and works of art and discourse. It is based on three main approaches : the theory of proportions, anatomical issues and relations with antiquity. The first part is concerned with proportions, the "clothing of ideas" in Husserl's expression, but which, for artists, is a component of their practice. Drawing on the rich material of Renaissance and seventeenth-century texts, the aim is to examine the intellectual background and evolution of these modes of thought articulating the relations between antiquity and creation, proportions and anatomy. Anatomy, and the way anatomy was taught during the eighteenth century, is the central object of the second part. Our hypothesis is that there a certain interplay between the medical canon and the artistic canon. Within this hypothesis, it was necessary to look at how anatomy was evolving both as an autonomous domain of knowledge and in its links with sculpture. Questions of beauty, natural beauty and artistic beauty are also central here. The development of anatomical conceptions and the theory of proportions have direct associations with another of the major poles of art at the time, that is to say the expression of characters and of passions. The third part of our theisis, then is a mix of questions to do with composition and disposition as they relate to the question of imitation in the art of sculpture. In the last part of the thesis, we have tried to identify the aesthetic issues in the material aspects of creation, addressing the concrete aspects of sculpted works. The quarrel between flesh and contour is not the equivalent of the quarrel between colour and line, but nonetheless has links with this problematic. Furthermore, the nude raises the question of the limits of representation in sculpture. The thesis concludes by a parallel approach to the writings of Emeric-David and Quatremère de Quincy, a comparison which is also an opening to the aesthetic problems of the nineteenth century. Starting in the sixteenth century, then, and concluding with Quatremère de Quincy's theories on the ideal, in 1837, the thesis is both chronological and thermatic, the texts and works not respecting classical chronological distinctions

Abstract:
The title of the research is Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems Model for Individual Organizations and Supply Chains. This research has achieved its aim to develop and demonstrate the practical implementation of a simple and objective sustainability performance evaluation management system model for individual organizations and supply chains. It has resulted in the recognition that a new concept – Network of Interested Partners – underpins the achievement of sustainability. The term acknowledges the interdependence and reflects the essential cooperation that must be achieved between business organisations, their commercially related entities and the local community if progress towards sustainability is to be achieved. It therefore encompasses and extends the concept of a supply chain as currently used. Sustainable Development is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as development, which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future societies to meet their own needs. Organizations, as part of human activities, also have to be sustainable. The sustainability of organizations is directly linked to the continual improvement of business performance. Many organizations have found a way to improve performance through the establishment of management systems. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards are recognized worldwide as reliable and efficient tools for the implementation of management systems. However, they do not always result in the desired improvement in outcomes. Therefore, if the required improvement of business performance is to be achieved, improved methodologies for development and implementation of performance evaluation (PE) processes are necessary. These methodologies must take into consideration sustainability principles. They also have to be applicable to individual entities and supply chains, with or without management systems in place. Supply chains are important because it is being increasingly recognized that overall supply chain performance is a means of adding value and competitive advantage to all businesses. In the first part of the research a performance evaluation model or PE (version 1 model) was developed. This was used as criteria to compare and evaluate existing performance evaluation processes and outcomes of individual organisations and their respective supply chain within the Gladstone region, Australia. Questionnaires have also been used to identify and evaluate the needs of the interested parties in relation to the organizations’ and supply chains’ business performance and processes of performance evaluation. All the information provided in the first part of the research was used by the researcher to develop the Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems model or SPEMS (version 2 model). This incorporates the concepts of Network of Interested Parties/Partners. In particular, one of the outcomes is recognition that organizations need to establish partnerships if effective supply chain performance improvement is to be achieved. Therefore the establishment of partnerships has become a key requirement for the implementation of SPEMS. The establishment of partnership among participants of a supply chain of Gladstone and implementation of the eight first steps of the SPEMS (version 2 model) in this supply chain was commenced successfully through workshops. The supply chain was formed by commercial organizations, government entities and interested parties from the community. SPEMS requires that partners all have the same level of ownership and authority in the decisions of the supply chain. Some new terms and their definitions have been created within the research to support the new SPEMS model. They include: Network of Interested Partners, sustainability for organizations, sustainability KPI and sustainability friendly organizations. All of the above are encompassed within the final SPEMS (version 3 model).

Abstract:
Fluorocarbons are known to be stiffer than their hydrocarbon analogues, a property that underlines the extensive industrial application of fluorocarbon materials. Although there has been previous studies on the rotational barrier of molecules having fluorocarbon centers, a detailed systematic study is necessary to quantify flurocarbon stiffness. The molecules, Pyrene-(CF2)n-Pyrene, Pyrene-(CF2)n-F, Pyrene-(CH2)n-Pyrene and Pyrene-(CH2)n-H were therefore synthesized to enable the determination of the barrier to rotation of the carbon backbone in fluorocarbons. Conformational studies will be completed with steady-state and time-dependent emission spectroscopy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Supply chain literature has increasingly argued that supply chains are being used by a wide range of industries to generate innovations which deliver competitive advantage, and that social factors such as trust and collaboration play a key role in making effective supply chain management (SCM). Closer examination of the research suggests that much of this literature is based on studies of industries which deliver consumer products and these studies are predominantly conducted within a positivist research framework. This research bias has resulted in far less attention being paid to studies of mature industrial markets. This case study seeks to redress such bias by posing an overall question regarding the role of social factors in innovation within a well established supply chain which existed across three mature, capital intensive industries steel manufacturing, transport and railroad track construction and working outside the positivist paradigm by using a m ultidisciplinary research approach within a critical realist framework. In responding to the overall research question, three subordinate questions were explored. Firstly, how well suited are present corporate governance structures of individual organisations to deal with the newly emerging interconnected organisational structures in order to support the generation of innovations within supply chains? Secondly, what has been the impact of the widespread adoption of information technology in generating innovation in supply chains? And thirdly, what is the role played by interorganisational social networks in generating innovations within supply chains? The overall findings were that the social factors played a far more important role than had hitherto been acknowledged in either supporting or inhibiting innovation within supply chains. Corporate governance was seen to generally inhibit innovation between organisations. The claims of much of the SCM literature which asserts a strong link between IT and innovation in supply chains was not supported. In fact, it was found that the majority of subjects preferred to get information through social systems. The role of interorganisational networks (IONs) was found to be most effective at generating incremental innovations aimed at maintaining operational efficiency. A critical realist research approach was able to uncover some difficulties associated with a purely positivist research paradigm which restricts investigation to the empirical level of ontology. The critical realist approach was able to explore social causal mechanisms and structures which were not as readily accessible at the empirical level of inves tigation. It was found that multiple realities existed across the supply chain, and that the positivist assumption of a mono reality which underpins much of the enterprise resource planning (ERP), process management and governance approaches was in fact inhibiting the ability of the social system to be innovative and ultimately driving up costs. In fact a process management approach supported by information technology and operating within present corporate governance structures created conflicting goals which increased complexity. A key finding of this study was how the open social system of the supply chain used dynamic relationships to overcome the rigidities and complexity of a closed systems logic embedded in the formal governance and information systems.
