Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract A cast brass ewer was unearthed from the Shangfang Śarīra Stupa crypt at Qingshan Monastery. Most likely, it was made in the northwestern part of the South Asian subcontinent in the late seventh century. Integrating ancient Roman, Sassanian, and early Islamic styles, the shape of this ewer not only is a mixture of the elements of different eras and traditions but also reflects unique attributes. The multi-headed and multi-armed deities from Hinduism, especially Skanda, may have inspired the six-faced design on the body. Eventually, the ewer was taken to Chang’an by Indian or Kashmirian monks and buried in the pagoda’s crypt.

Abstract:
This study investigates the symbolism of colour in Hinduism. With a specific focus on the Hindu community in eThekwini, South Africa, the case study employed a qualitative research method to investigate the roles and cultural associations of colour in Hindu religion, and how it has been adopted and integrated into the cultural practices. Two samples of population were selected using a purposive sampling technique: namely, 10 religious leaders from 10 eThekwini Temples and 10 senior citizens (ages 55 and above) in the Hindu community who visit Temples and practise Hinduism on a regular basis. The participants were interviewed using open-ended questions and the collected data was analysed using thematic analysis. Seven themes emerged from the data analysed which include 1) the main colours in Hindu religion; 2) avoided colours; 3) cultural norms of colour in the Hindu community; 4) personal attitude toward colours; 5) benefits of colour therapy; 6) use of chakras; and 7) the healing properties of colours. The findings additionally revealed that colour symbolism is still widely used among Hindu communities in South Africa. Hence, this study creates awareness and promote the application of the symbolism in professional practices, especially in design field.

Abstract:
In this dissertation the phenomenological method together with the hermeneutical concepts of experience, devotion, constant remembrance and transmission focus on yogic transmission in Sahaj Marg of the Shri Ram Chandra Mission. Sahaj Marg is an adaptation of Raj a Yoga. Sahaj Marg emphasises the practical approach and calls for the aspirant to follow the teachings and methods of the spiritual Master. Yogic transmission is the unique feature of this system. Preceptors have been trained by the Master to aid in the spiritual evolution of humanity. Pranahuti is defined by the Master as a forceless force for the spiritual transformation of humanity. This system can be followed by all aspirants, the only qualification being a willingness to follow the practice. Sahaj Marg has been created for the present day aspirant to achieve liberation in the quickest time possible.
Religious Studies and Arabic
M.A. (Religious Studies)

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the key contexts in terms of which Keshab Chandra Sen should be understood. It begins with a discussion of London and Calcutta as global cities and explores scholarship concerning Indians in Britain. It goes on to analyze interconnections between Bengali Hinduism, Nonconformist Christianity, Unitarianism, alternative spiritualities, religious universalism and British policy in India. Keshab’s involvement in the Brahmo Samaj is discussed in detail, as is his relationship with the ideas of Ram Mohan Roy. Keshab’s family history is considered, as is his relationship with the Brahmo leader Debendranath Tagore.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the motivations behind and the consequences of the disastrous marriage of Keshab Chandra Sen’s daughter, Suniti Devi, to the Maharajah of Cuch Bihar in 1878. It argues that Keshab sanctioned the marriage because of his commitment to public duty and his conviction that British rule in India was divinely sanctioned. The chapter goes on to explore Keshab’s establishment of the Church of the New Dispensation (Naba Bidhan), with himself as its prophet. The New Dispensation drew on traditions of universalism in Hinduism, Brahmoism and Christianity, and was connected to movements including Transcendentalism and Theosophy. The chapter argues that the New Dispensation was not a project of national transformation, but one of personal spiritual development, which enabled Keshab and his followers to ‘perform’ a vision of universalist philosophy that did not exist in reality.
