Full textThe study presented in this memory concern the measurement and the improvement of the convective heat transfer in finned tubes heat exchangers. For the measurement of convective heat transfer coefficient, two techniques are developed: A transient method that calculate local heat transfer coefficient on the surface of slightly heat conducting fins at constant temperature. And an inverse method with a second-order regularization to calculate this coefficient on fins by taking account of side conduction in these last one. The two methods require the use of temperature fields that we measure using an infrared thermography system. These techniques were then applied to the characterization of the fins of heat exchanger. They also allowed the study of high efficiency thermal fins. The increase of heat transfer on the surface of the latter ones is obtained by the addition of vortex generators

Full textThis work take place in the experimental and numerical studies of the coupled superficial heat transfers on a plane wall. We are interested here, more particularly, in the case of a plane surface which is one of the faces of a ventilated and differentially heated air layer. The objective is to measure and separate the respective influences of the convective and radiative heat transfers. The experimental solution suggested to solve this problem consists in the use of fluxmetric instrumentation elaborated several years ago in our laboratory. After having quickly presented various existing experimental methods with their advantages and disadvantages, the instrumentation used in our work is described in details as well as the experimental context which is the support of our studies. It concerns here the case of a fully developed air flow in a horizontal channel with a rectangular section. The work concerns the exchanges on the surface of a horizontal and isothermal plate. Various situations are studied in order to demonstrate the possibility of measuring separately, the radiative and the convective components of heat flow and to show how local measurements make possible to obtain a thermal exchanges “cartography” even if there are disturbing obstacles in the fluid flow. A tool for numerical simulation (FLUENT) is used to set up a double step of experimentation and modelling. These two scientific approaches, in parallel, make possible to confirm the experimental results whenever modelling is relatively “simple” to implement. It is also possible to obtain experimental data very useful for the development of numerical simulations in most complicated cases. In this work, in the various presented configurations, the experimental results are generally in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations or results which are available in the bibliography. The last part of this work consists in a presentation of studies realized within a Benchmark work of an inter-laboratory framework on the problem of the free convection in a vertical channel differentially heated. The tools and the hypothesis for numerical simulations and their results are presented and commented. The first Abstract experiments are described and seem to provide interesting data for future explorations in the particular context of the free convection

Full textThe objective of this thesis is the conception and testing of a device which promotes the heat flux of a double-wall for low emissions combustion systems. The literature study prevailed the use of Offset Strip Fins (OSF) as heat flux promoter. Three double-wall with OSF have been tested in a combustion test cell equipped with: gas analysers, for calculating discharge coefficients, pressure sensors, thermocouples, and infrared thermometry. Velocity measurements on a 40 scale OSF also have been obtained by using Laser Doppler Anemometry. A simplified 1D model, capable of calculating temperatures profiles or analysing the experiments, is presented. The comparisons between the experimental results and the 1D / 3D RANS Fluent calculations permitted the evaluation of the Manglik & Bergles correlations concerning the pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient of heat exchangers of the type OSF. After presenting the specific methodology of analysis a new correlation is derived

Full textThe works we present here are a numerical approach of heat transfer coupling radiation-conduction and radiation-convection within semi-transparent two-dimensional medium ; The first part deals with a view of equation of radiative transfer and introduces three numerical methods (P1, P2, Hottel's zone) which enable one to solve this problem in a two dimensional environment. After comparing the three methods in the case where radiation is the only mode of transfer, we introduce in the second chapter a study of the coupling of radiation with conduction. So, a fourth method is used to solve the problem. These comparisons lead us to various methods which enable us to show the interest of the spherical harmonics approximations. In the third part, the P1 approximations is kept because it is simple to use, moreover it enables us to introduce both the coupling of radiative transfers with laminar convective equations in a thermally driven two-dimensional cavity. The results show a significant influence of the radiative participation of the fluid on heat and dynamic transfer we met in this type of problem

Full textThis study deals with the implementation of a Speckle Photography experimental device in order to measure temperature fields in bidimensional and tridimensional air flows, specially it focuses on near wall heat transfers estimation. First of all, an experimental device is designed and optimized for thermal phase object studies. Then, an original metrology to measure convective parietal heat flux is developed. It allows to increase spatial resolution and measurement accuracy, and to correct measurements from diffraction phenomenon which introduces a bias in parietal measurement. This technique is successfully validated with a measurement campaign on an air jet impingement flow simultaneously perform with the Speckle Photography technique and with a balance method. Finally, a tridimensionnal field estimation algorithm which needs a narrow viewing angle is developed. This technique has the advantage to be used in the parietal problems. It's implemented to estimate the thickness and the position of a free convective boundary layer

Full textThis work deals with a theoretical study of heat and mass transfer by combined mixed convection, radiation and chemical kinetics in an incinerator of wood carbonization with recovery and incineration of the pyrolysis fumes. A thermochemical model was elaborated to predict the temperatures, molar flows (in particular molar flow responsible for the racing of the incineration reaction) and the concentrations in each zone of the pilot plant. The radiative transfers in the gas phase and soot are modelled by applying the weighted sum of the grey gases model. We applied the finite volume method and the "blocked-off-region" procedure to handle the complex geometries. The equations governing the transfers by combined mixed convection, radiation and the chemical kinetics are solved by the finite volume method, TDMA and the SIMPLE algorithms. We analyzed the shadow effect caused by the baffles, the fumes optical thickness, the Boltzmann number, the conduction-radiation parameter, Reynolds number and the Richardson number. We determined the best configuration of the baffles and shown that the increase in the soot volume fraction causes an increase in radiative heat flux and the presence of soot at a temperature different from that of the fume causes a radiative thermal non equilibrium. The partial pressure ratio of H2O and CO2 does not effect the radiative heat flux on the walls of the incinerator. The heat generated by the incineration of the fumes causes intensification and homogenisation of the transfers in a forced convection mode. The results of the thermochemical model are in qualitative and quantitative good agreement with the experimental results

Full textThis thesis deals with the modifications of heat transfer and fluid flow in natural convection. The configuration chosen is a differentially heated cavity of aspect ratio equal to 4. The modifications are achieved using a small spatial extent disturbance located at the hot wall at a Rayleigh number value close of the critical value corresponding to the transition from steady to unsteady state. Two complementary studies were conducted. A preliminary numerical study was carried out, in which a thermal disturbance was introduced by means of a local change of the imposed temperature at the isothermal wall. It was shown that the flow regime can be changed from a steady state to an unsteady one. In addition, the heat transfers can be significantly modified by an appropriate choice of disturbance parameters (frequency, magnitude and location). An additional study, using an experimental device, was conducted by positioning a cylindrical obstacle on the hotwall. Two types of obstacles were chosen : insulating and conductive. The influence on heat transfers of the length of the obstacle, its vertical location, the Rayleigh number ofthe flow as well as the number of obstacles was analyzed in the vertical mid-depth plane

Full textIn recent years, the use of high performance and lightweight composites materials has increased considerably in many industrial sectors. However, the temperature distribution within composite parts produced using the current manufacturing methods plays a key role in determining the parts quality at the end of the process. Among the existing various fabrication methods, the autoclave molding is considered as one of the best methods to manufacture advanced and high quality composite parts. During autoclave molding, heat transfer between the composite parts and the surroundings is strongly coupled with the flow field around their molds and modeled through the convective heat transfer coefficient. The purpose of this study is therefore to develop a new approach for performing experimental measurements in order to analyze the local velocity field and convective heat transfer coefficient distribution around simple and representative industrial molds. The implemented experimental approach is based essentially on the use of a reduced scale autoclave designed thanks to similarity laws, and instrumented by means of non-intrusive measuring instruments such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and infrared imaging. Furthermore, Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations of the flow field and convective heat transfer were performed using ANSYS Fluent 16.0®. This local investigation has revealed a non-uniform distribution of the convective heat transfer coefficient around the molds. This heterogeneity can directly impact the parts quality during an autoclave process in view of high temperature gradient. Furthermore, the study has shown the presence of shadowing effects during the process of several molds together which can lead to production of composite pieces with different qualities. An optimization study has permitted to propose an optimal geometric design of the supports of the molds that allows the intensification of the convective heat transfer coefficients and the reduction of the heterogeneities. The experimental and the numerical results were in good agreement, leading then to the validation of the performed numerical simulations

Full textA numerical and experimental analysis is performed to study how the roughness of an horizontal plate has influence on laminar natural convection transfers developed in the vicinity of the plate. The numerical analysis, of natural convection above horizontal plates submitted to an uniform and constant heat flux, is presented first. These plates of various roughness (plane, sinusoidal, triangular) are placed in a semi-infinite medium (air, water, oil). The equations are discretized by using the control volume approach and the linkage between the momentum and the continuity equations is realized by the SIMPLE algorithm. An homotopic transformation of coordinate allows the transformation of the sinusoidal or triangular profiles into a plane surface. The evolution of natural convection with time is realized by using an iterative procedure to estimate the positions of the top and lateral boundaries. The results are presented in the form of streamlines, isothermal lines, Nusselt numbers. . . Correlation's, including amplitude to period ratio, are proposed in order to estimate the transfer from the plate to the fluid. The results shows that the morphology of the flow and the heat transfer are strongly dependent on the parameters and the shapes of the protuberances. The second part of the analysis deals with an experimental study. The thermal fields above roughened horizontal plates and their evolution with time are obtained by using two methods : a thermal scanning microscopy technique and holographic interferometry. Theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement

Full textThis thesis presents experimental investigation of free convection in opened inclined rectangular channel heated from the top with a uniform heat flux. To this end, an experimental setup was built by using two parallel plates 1 m wide and 1. 5 m long. The distance between the upper and lower plates could be adjusted up to 19 cm and the tilt angle of the channel could be adjusted as required from the horizontal to the vertical position. The sides were well insulated. Three constant heat flux densities (262, 408, 574 W/m2) and two air gaps (14 and 19 cm) and tilt angles (15, 30, 45, 60 and 75°) were considered. Data analysis was made under steady state condition to develop correlation ships between Nusselt (Nu) and Reynolds number (Re), introduced to calculate the air flow rate induced by the channel, as a function of Rayleigh number (Ra), tilt angle and the channel aspect ratio defined as the ration between the distance between the plates and the channel length. The developed correlations could be used for modeling such configuration and roof solar collector. The experimental set-up was validated by comparing its output to a common wall configuration. The case of horizontal channel was also investigated. Experimental analysis was conducted with the help of an available computer code, which we modified to suit our configuration and related boundary conditions

Full textThe evaporation of a solvent/solute solution is a transient phenomenon which ends when the whole solvent has disappeared. Phase change generates a cooling of the liquid-gas interface, and consequently, it creates thermal and solutal gradients. These homogeneities spread in the core solution and produce, eventually, a fluid flow. This convection can be due to the surface tension and/or buoyancy variations. Experimental works have shown that some coating thicknesses stemming from drying processes are correlated to the size of the convection cells in the fluid region. A thorough understanding of the physical phenomena responsible to fluid convection should contribute to improve the control of deposit quality.Based on numerical and experimental works, we have studied the onset of convection for three kinds of models for the drying process of a Polyisobutylene-Toluène solution: A pure thermal model which is valid for short times, a solutal model devoted to the simulation of long times, only, and a thermal/solutal coupled model which takes into account the heat and mass transfer over a long time period of the evaporation process. The transient nature of the evaporation problem raises the issue of how to define the onset of the convective flow from a diffusive solution. Indeed, this flow motion occurs from a seed which is a small perturbation of the transient diffusive solution. If the perturbation is too weak, the necessary time interval for a significant growing of its magnitude will be greater than the time scale of the transient regime: thus the solution will never be considered as convective. Consequently, the influence of the perturbation is fundamental. In previous numerical works, this perturbation was imposed at the initial state, often through a random spatial distribution applied to the velocity or temperature field. In the present contribution, we have adopted a physical model where the adiabatic lateral walls have been replaced by diathermal walls: The local thermal inhomogeneities create a very weak flow acting as a small disturbance for the transient diffusive solution. In this thesis, we have developed a numerical model to evaluate the thresholds between the diffusive solutions and the convective flows, for the thermal, solutal and thermal/solutal coupled models, for two- and three-dimensional approximations of the Polyisobutylene-Toluène liquid film. Space-time diagrams and convective cell reconstructions at the liquid-gas interface by a Voronoï algorithm allowed us to get a better understanding of the way the disturbances propagate from the lateral walls for finally giving rise to a convective flow in the core fluid

Full textThis work includes four parts. In the first part, we explain the formulation of relative transfer in a semitransparent media. A comparative study for several calculation methods for the radiative equation is proposed. The P1 approximation in a two-dimensional form is them retained for modelling heat transfer coupled by radiation and convection. In the second one, we analyse the interaction between thermal radiation and natural convection within a two-dimensional porous medium. The radiative model is associated with a finite difference scheme which allows to solve convective equations described by Darcy's law and Boussinesq approximation. The study of dimensionless parameters which govern this interaction provides a better understanding of roles played by each mechanism of transfer. In the third part, the interaction between natural convection and thermal radiation in two-dimensional semi-transparent fluid has been investigated. Before analysing the case of non-grey medium we expose a parametric study for a grey fluid isotropic scattering. The last part deals with a much more difficult coupled problem. We consider the interaction between natural convection and thermal radiation within a cavity partially filled with a porous medium. For the interface, which is permeable and non-opaque, a radiative boundary condition is proposed. The convective equation are treated with combined Navier-Stokes and Brinkman equations. The effect of main parameters has been studied. It is shown that the permeable and non-opaque interface induces a deep modification in both thermal and dynamic fields
