Abstract:
For more than a quarter of a century, China has experienced a significant economic growth. Yet, this rapid growth has brought on many economic, social and environmental challenges, which might negatively influence the future development of the country. The objective of this paper is to analyse the Chinese economic evolution in order to determine if its growth model is sustainable over time. The research methods consisted in an investigation of the specialized literature, which helped us formulate four research hypotheses, and in a statistical analysis of secondary data, which allowed us develop four models, in order to test the hypotheses. The conclusions show that, to sustain the growth rate, China needs to increase its human capital stock, to keep the pace of attracting the foreign investments, to reduce the size of the government, to diminish the public consumption and to invest in the renewable energy, for increasing the energy efficiency.

Abstract:
Globalisation is at the beginning of the new century a double-edged weapon: a strong driving force of economic growth, the development of new technologies and the growth of the level of living in the poor as well as rich countries, but also a controversory process which damages national sovereignty, undermines the local culture and traditions and presents a threat of the economic and social non-stability. The key question of the 21st century then is, whether the states will be able to keep the process under control or whether they will become its victims.

Abstract:
The banking sector plays a vital role in growth-supporting factor for economic growth in the world’s fastest-growing economies like India. Recently, Islamic banking has become an increasingly popular method for alleviating poverty, financial inclusion and economic development around the world. Its importance is highly needed in developing and emerging countries such as India. The main purpose of the paper is to identify and prioritize the critical impeding factors for Islamic banking growth in India. The study is conducted in two stages: the first stage involves investigating the current literature works regarding the challenges facing Islamic banking industry in India, while the second stage is based on identifying and prioritizing these challenges according to its importance in hindering Islamic banking growth by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). AHP is a multi-criterion decision making tool for organizing and analyzing decisions, based on qualitative and quantitative measures. The results show that the regulatory environmental challenge is the most significant factor among other factors in impeding the growth of Islamic banking in India followed by lack of Islamic banking experts and scholars. The third main challenge is lack of awareness for Islamic banking instruments followed by lack of standardization and the last is lack of cooperation and coordination between Islamic banking authorities. This study is considered the first one to address empirically the challenges facing Islamic banking industry in the world and particularly in India.

Roza, Mafalda Correia Larroudé Trigo da. "Mozambikes – The challenges of growth." Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/11610.

Full text
Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics<br>Mozambikes is a Mozambican social enterprise founded in 2009, whose mission is to “transform the lives of rural Mozambicans by providing higher quality bicycles at low market prices throughout the country.”1 The idea of Mozambikes resulted from a roadtrip, in which Lauren and Rui came across many rural Mozambicans walking and carrying heavy burdens on foot. They realized that bicycles would provide a quicker and safer way to reach the cities and improve their standard of living. The co-founders have therefore designed an innovative business model that allows them to accomplish their mission. In December 2011 the first order was dispatched and since then the social enterprise has gained recognition and has created three new business models, different from the initial one, in order to achieve a wider range of customers. At the end of 2012, 1,000 bicycles had been sold. During the next 6 years the co-founders want to expand in order to better achieve Mozambikes’ mission, producing 25,000 bicycles per year. To do this, they need to develop a strategic plan towards a scaling up process.

Abstract:
Purpose - Identify the most frequent challenges of growth perceived by micro firms. Design/methodology/approach - The data was collected through 30 qualitative interviews, conducted in April and May of 2011. In addition, the data was analyzed in accordance of the different characteristics of the participating firms to identify patterns of the most frequent challenges of growth perceived by micro firms. Findings - The findings from this research implicates that challenges to grow in micro firms differs from different sectors, if the firms is enrolled within a business incubator or not, and according to the age of the firm. Research limitations/implications - This study may not be global since the research was fulfilled in Sweden. As the institutions and regulations might differ from other countries there are some common nominators that Sweden shares with other nations and regions for instance the financial system. Practical implications - Evidence from this research has shown that time is the most frequent perceived challenge to grow in micro firms, and that time is the foundation of many other perceived challenges. Originality/value - Researchers have stated that empirical findings on what affect micro firms growth has been neglected, the previous studies have been focusing on SMEs rather than micro enterprises.

Abstract:
<p>Scholars have proposed numerous explanations as to why the Department of Homeland Security has struggled to mature as an organization and effectively conduct its core mission. We propose an alternative viewpoint that the department lacks key legal authorities and necessitates key organizational transfer in order to rationalize its portfolio. We examine these points through review of legal authorities in select mission areas and through a resource analysis of activities conducted throughout the federal government to execute the homeland security mission. The analysis leads to specific recommendations for transfers and authorities and suggestions as to how the political environment might coalesce around engendering these changes. </p>

Frankenberger, Dale Thomas. "The growth of the Japanese economy: challenges to American national security." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/28251.

Full text
Abstract:
As the Japanese economy has grown more powerful over the last two decades, there has been an increasing number of influential Americans who have voiced the fear that sharp economic competition from Japan is beginning to threaten the health of the US economy. There is a wide-spread perception that Japan is a "neo-mercantilist" nation which engages in predatory and unfair trade practices. Japan-bashers maintain that the Japanese believe that there is little distinction between economic security and national security and that their mercantilist approach to doing business threatens American national security by weakening critical elements of the US economy. By examining the extent and nature of the Japanese economic presence in the world marketplace, this thesis will show that this economic challenge poses no real danger to American economic interests except in one critical area--the development and control of high technology.

Babatunde, Abimbola Fatimah. "Financial development, foreign direct investment and economic growth : challenges for developing countries." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6346.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the pattern of growth in developing countries is characterised by instability, uncertainties and volatility, the experience of the five fast-growing developing economies of Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico and China (BRIMCs) presents an unprecedented challenge for other developing countries. Therefore, this thesis argues that the emergence of the BRIMCs as the future growth engine of the world presents an excellent backdrop to re-examine the importance of financial development and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) context. It is important to mention that for empirical studies, the methodologies used for estimations will differ for different groups of countries. Hence, the study applies panel data techniques to take into account the heterogeneity of these developing countries. It further uses dynamic panel data framework and a panel co-integration analysis to capture the long-run relationships. The measures employed assessed various aspects of financial development including; private credit as a ratio of GDP, bank credit, liquid liabilities, stock market capitalisation and value of stock traded, and a single measure of FDI being the annual inflow of FDI as a ratio of GDP for 60 developing countries during 1980-2007. The study also explores the interaction between economic openness and human capital insofar as the attraction of FDI is concerned in the developing countries under consideration. The findings reveal that financial liberalisation and good institutions are important for financial development. For the SSA countries, the results indicate that while financial liberalisation promotes stock market development, the lack of good institutions, in particular control of corruption, bureaucratic quality and rule of law are less favourable to financial development. Furthermore, the study finds that economic openness and human capital also play an important role in the attraction of FDI and the growth effect of FDI in developing countries. The primary policy implication is that SSA countries should make efforts towards initiating and implementing financial sector development reforms and FDI incentives.

Lu, Adrian C. (Adrian Chian). "Seeds of growth : the challenges of venture capital in the Australian landscape." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72856.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis..<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 85-90).<br>The Australian venture capital (VC) industry is young and relatively immature compared to the United States. Even though the first Australian VC firm appeared in 1970, the industry remained a niche with low levels of activity until the technology boom of the late 1990s saw many new entrants and larger funds being raised. Unfortunately for the industry, it experienced two major economic downturns just as it was beginning to take shape, hurting industry performance and deterring investors. Since the global financial crisis, investment activity has been on a continuous decline, raising concerns that the industry will continue to decline at worst, or remain on a stagnant path at best, never reaching the critical mass to flourish and achieve a meaningful role in Australia's economic growth. Although recent economic events have impacted venture capital investing around the world, Australia faces a number of local challenges that have left it struggling while countries like the United States and the United Kingdom now make their recovery. In this study, we investigate the idiosyncratic factors contributing to the challenged state of the Australian VC industry-by looking at its recent history, performance, and participants-in the context of government policies that have been implemented to support it. We identify industry immaturity, poor track record of performance, gaps between research and commercialization, and the structure of institutional investors as key issues facing the industry. An understanding of the local challenges facing the venture capital industry is vital to addressing them. Based on the challenges identified, we evaluate and recommend potential remedies by taking a holistic view of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the role of venture capital within it-from the perspective of entrepreneurs, investors, research institutions, and government.<br>by Adrian C. Russ, Ricardo. "SCALING CHALLENGES IN DIGITAL VENTURES." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för informatik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-150563.

Abstract:
The number of startups is on the rise, specifically digital startups with products entirely based on software. These companies are facing a resilient challenge when it comes to increasing their user base, revenue or market share. This process is called scaling, which is an essential part for every startup in order to establish themselves in the market. While there are several generic models focusing on scaling a business, there seems to be a lack of scientific research focusing on the challenges during the process of scaling. This paper describes a qualitative study focusing on purely digital companies which have scaled or are trying to scale. Resulting in finding several distinct challenges and barriers related to scaling digital companies, by comparing and contrasting growth literature with the data generated by this study. Besides these challenges, our findings suggest that B2B and B2C companies are facing different challenges during their scaling processes.

Abstract:
World practice shows that human resources in agribusiness are subject to management and this is an extremely effective and useful way to combine with other resources of the company to achieve its goals. Moreover, when we talk about human resources, we mean the perspective of their development, while when we talk about staff, we mean the one available in an agricultural company. Human resource management is a targeted impact on the object "people" to transform their suitability and motivation on the product, on productivity, profitability, efficiency, market position, profit, growth. We can point out that this is both a strategy and current management, which sets the framework for how to attract, support and motivate people in their activities. The purpose of the report is to highlight the differences in perceptions of personnel management and human resources management in certain directions and to outline the potential opportunities, the chances for success of agricultural firms at the present stage.

Abstract:
Bioheat transfer is a field with origins in medical applications that date to thousands of years ago. It has long been appreciated that manipulation of temperature and energy could have significant therapeutic benefits. However, prior to the Second World War, nearly all work in this field was based on empirical studies, many of which were guided by brilliant insights of medical and life scientists. In more recent times, the principles and methods of heat transfer have been applied systematically, and often times in conjunction with highly synergistic collaborations with physicians and biologists, to achieve remarkable advances that have translated to important innovations in life science and medicine. The following discussion presents a limited range of comments concerning work accomplished by researchers associated with the ASME Bioengineering Division.

Abstract:
The introduction of internationally recognized environmental management standards is primarily aimed at making the world economy more environmentally friendly, and at more effective conservation of natural resources. The European Union has specific objectives related to the implementation of environmental protection policies by 2050. Effective pathways and approaches to the implementation of such policies and objectives in agriculture can be found through the introduction of a system according to the requirements of ISO 45001. The main objective of this study is to identify, based on an expert assessment, the milestones in introducing and successful certification of environmental management systems in agriculture. The established milestones for system development may be extended to other sectors.

Abstract:
According its position in the supply chain, agrarian producers could contemplate higher or lower possibilities for the realization of its production. Not all types of cultures allow reaching final clients directly, because those products are aimed for intermediate consumption or are used as a source for Food processing Industry. Reaching final clients producers could be benefited by higher prices of realization of their products, but a "vertical integration forward" is required to be done successfully. Additional labor and capital resources need to be invested in that activity. Information of the market and acquisition of knowledge both commercial and assessment of experts are also required in order to be accomplish the realization of products both in national and external markets. The aim of this research is to identify and asses different ways that are available to Bulgarian agricultural producers for the realization of their production. For that reason precisely the position of the supply chain could determine broadly the depth and the horizon of market possibilities available.

Oviedo, Daniel, Daniel Perez Jaramillo, and Mariajosé Nieto. Governance and Regulation of Ride-hailing Services in Emerging Markets: Challenges, Experiences and Implications. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003579.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper seeks to shed some light on the different considerations for regulation and governance of ride-hailing platforms in emerging markets, highlighting their positive and negative externalities. Building on an extensive review of the literature and secondary sources, we outline Ride-hailing's identified and potential effects on users (providers and consumers), incumbents, and society. Based on the welfare impacts structure, we identify the significant challenges that regulators face in understanding, monitoring, evaluating, and regulating this type of transportation innovation. Finally, the paper proposes a framework for approaching such mobility innovations from governance and regulation perspectives. In a context of exponential growth in research and innovation in urban mobility in general and Ride-hailing, a rigorous review of the literature and a critical framework for understanding governance and regulation in such services in rapidly changing contexts is a timely contribution.

Cedergren, Elin, Diana Huynh, Andrea Morf, and John Moodie. Strengthening regional resilience through adaptive collaboration: A case study on the fisheries co-management Northern Bohuslän. Nordregio, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.6027/pb2020:5.2001-3876.

Full text
Abstract:
This policy brief examines how co-management arrangements within small-scale fisheries can play a key role in enhancing sectoral and regional resilience. Despite major challenges, “multi-stakeholder collaborations” - such as co-management - demonstrate the potential for innovative knowledge transfer and strategic adaptation processes within the fisheries sector. The focus here is on Co-management Northern Bohuslän (Samförvaltning Norra Bohuslän), which promotes sustainable local fisheries and blue growth on Sweden’s west coast. The case illustrates how, under appropriate conditions, participatory local efforts can significantlycontribute to sustainability and resilience. The policy brief presents findings on related challenges and opportunities, including recommendations on future directions for the co-management initiative itself, and more general suggestions for co-management as a means to promote sectoral and regional resilience in the Nordic region.

McCall, Jamie. Assessing the Evidence: Promoting Economic Development in Rural North Carolina with Education, Workforce Development, Infrastructure, Healthcare, and Leadership. Carolina Small Business Development Fund, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/rural.economic.development.

Full text
Abstract:
Like many other states, North Carolina’s population dynamics have shown a definitive shift toward greater urbanization. Some of the population increase in urban areas is in-migration from outside the state. However, net population loss in many of North Carolina’s rural areas has been on the rise for years. Population outflows of this magnitude can bring an array of unique challenges for rural small firms. Chronic rural issues like unfavorable geography, endemic poverty, and poor infrastructure for business can pose serious economic development challenges. According to some scholars, level of rurality or geographical isolation is the primary variable in explaining why economic development outcomes vary across the United States. We assess the literature to determine what role small business development and complimentary strategies have in rural economic growth.

Díaz de Astarloa, Bernardo, Nanno Mulder, Sandra Corcuera-Santamaría, et al. Post Pandemic Covid-19 Economic Recovery: Enabling Latin America and the Caribbean to Better Harness E-commerce and Digital Trade. Edited by Marcee Gómez. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003436.

Full text
Abstract:
This report shows that Latin America and the Caribbean faces critical policy challenges going forward. It must accelerate the digital transformation to allow businesses and consumers to adapt to a new normal and leverage pandemic recovery to create stronger economies, and also tackle long-standing barriers to adopting digital technologies and bridging digital divides. These have impeded sustained and equitable economic growth even before the pandemic struck. This crisis should be a wake-up call for governments, the private sector, civil society, and international development partners to come together and take concerted actions to advance on consistent, long-term, and sustainable e-commerce strategies that are at the forefront of national and regional productive development agendas. Just as digital solutions allowed countries to overcome the increased role of distance within the context of the pandemic in shaping consumption and business, they should also be harnessed to increase regional economic integration beyond this emergency situation.
