Roza, Mafalda Correia Larroudé Trigo da. "Mozambikes – The challenges of growth." Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/11610.

Full text
Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Mozambikes is a Mozambican social enterprise founded in 2009, whose mission is to “transform the lives of rural Mozambicans by providing higher quality bicycles at low market prices throughout the country.”1 The idea of Mozambikes resulted from a roadtrip, in which Lauren and Rui came across many rural Mozambicans walking and carrying heavy burdens on foot. They realized that bicycles would provide a quicker and safer way to reach the cities and improve their standard of living. The co-founders have therefore designed an innovative business model that allows them to accomplish their mission. In December 2011 the first order was dispatched and since then the social enterprise has gained recognition and has created three new business models, different from the initial one, in order to achieve a wider range of customers. At the end of 2012, 1,000 bicycles had been sold. During the next 6 years the co-founders want to expand in order to better achieve Mozambikes’ mission, producing 25,000 bicycles per year. To do this, they need to develop a strategic plan towards a scaling up process.

Abstract:
Purpose - Identify the most frequent challenges of growth perceived by micro firms. Design/methodology/approach - The data was collected through 30 qualitative interviews, conducted in April and May of 2011. In addition, the data was analyzed in accordance of the different characteristics of the participating firms to identify patterns of the most frequent challenges of growth perceived by micro firms. Findings - The findings from this research implicates that challenges to grow in micro firms differs from different sectors, if the firms is enrolled within a business incubator or not, and according to the age of the firm. Research limitations/implications - This study may not be global since the research was fulfilled in Sweden. As the institutions and regulations might differ from other countries there are some common nominators that Sweden shares with other nations and regions for instance the financial system. Practical implications - Evidence from this research has shown that time is the most frequent perceived challenge to grow in micro firms, and that time is the foundation of many other perceived challenges. Originality/value - Researchers have stated that empirical findings on what affect micro firms growth has been neglected, the previous studies have been focusing on SMEs rather than micro enterprises.

Abstract:

Scholars have proposed numerous explanations as to why the Department of Homeland Security has struggled to mature as an organization and effectively conduct its core mission. We propose an alternative viewpoint that the department lacks key legal authorities and necessitates key organizational transfer in order to rationalize its portfolio. We examine these points through review of legal authorities in select mission areas and through a resource analysis of activities conducted throughout the federal government to execute the homeland security mission. The analysis leads to specific recommendations for transfers and authorities and suggestions as to how the political environment might coalesce around engendering these changes.

Frankenberger, Dale Thomas. "The growth of the Japanese economy: challenges to American national security." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/28251.

Full text
Abstract:
As the Japanese economy has grown more powerful over the last two decades, there has been an increasing number of influential Americans who have voiced the fear that sharp economic competition from Japan is beginning to threaten the health of the US economy. There is a wide-spread perception that Japan is a "neo-mercantilist" nation which engages in predatory and unfair trade practices. Japan-bashers maintain that the Japanese believe that there is little distinction between economic security and national security and that their mercantilist approach to doing business threatens American national security by weakening critical elements of the US economy. By examining the extent and nature of the Japanese economic presence in the world marketplace, this thesis will show that this economic challenge poses no real danger to American economic interests except in one critical area--the development and control of high technology.

Babatunde, Abimbola Fatimah. "Financial development, foreign direct investment and economic growth : challenges for developing countries." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6346.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the pattern of growth in developing countries is characterised by instability, uncertainties and volatility, the experience of the five fast-growing developing economies of Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico and China (BRIMCs) presents an unprecedented challenge for other developing countries. Therefore, this thesis argues that the emergence of the BRIMCs as the future growth engine of the world presents an excellent backdrop to re-examine the importance of financial development and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) context. It is important to mention that for empirical studies, the methodologies used for estimations will differ for different groups of countries. Hence, the study applies panel data techniques to take into account the heterogeneity of these developing countries. It further uses dynamic panel data framework and a panel co-integration analysis to capture the long-run relationships. The measures employed assessed various aspects of financial development including; private credit as a ratio of GDP, bank credit, liquid liabilities, stock market capitalisation and value of stock traded, and a single measure of FDI being the annual inflow of FDI as a ratio of GDP for 60 developing countries during 1980-2007. The study also explores the interaction between economic openness and human capital insofar as the attraction of FDI is concerned in the developing countries under consideration. The findings reveal that financial liberalisation and good institutions are important for financial development. For the SSA countries, the results indicate that while financial liberalisation promotes stock market development, the lack of good institutions, in particular control of corruption, bureaucratic quality and rule of law are less favourable to financial development. Furthermore, the study finds that economic openness and human capital also play an important role in the attraction of FDI and the growth effect of FDI in developing countries. The primary policy implication is that SSA countries should make efforts towards initiating and implementing financial sector development reforms and FDI incentives.

Lu, Adrian C. (Adrian Chian). "Seeds of growth : the challenges of venture capital in the Australian landscape." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72856.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2012.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis..
Includes bibliographical references (p. 85-90).
The Australian venture capital (VC) industry is young and relatively immature compared to the United States. Even though the first Australian VC firm appeared in 1970, the industry remained a niche with low levels of activity until the technology boom of the late 1990s saw many new entrants and larger funds being raised. Unfortunately for the industry, it experienced two major economic downturns just as it was beginning to take shape, hurting industry performance and deterring investors. Since the global financial crisis, investment activity has been on a continuous decline, raising concerns that the industry will continue to decline at worst, or remain on a stagnant path at best, never reaching the critical mass to flourish and achieve a meaningful role in Australia's economic growth. Although recent economic events have impacted venture capital investing around the world, Australia faces a number of local challenges that have left it struggling while countries like the United States and the United Kingdom now make their recovery. In this study, we investigate the idiosyncratic factors contributing to the challenged state of the Australian VC industry-by looking at its recent history, performance, and participants-in the context of government policies that have been implemented to support it. We identify industry immaturity, poor track record of performance, gaps between research and commercialization, and the structure of institutional investors as key issues facing the industry. An understanding of the local challenges facing the venture capital industry is vital to addressing them. Based on the challenges identified, we evaluate and recommend potential remedies by taking a holistic view of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the role of venture capital within it-from the perspective of entrepreneurs, investors, research institutions, and government.
by Adrian C. Russ, Ricardo. "SCALING CHALLENGES IN DIGITAL VENTURES." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för informatik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-150563.

Abstract:
The number of startups is on the rise, specifically digital startups with products entirely based on software. These companies are facing a resilient challenge when it comes to increasing their user base, revenue or market share. This process is called scaling, which is an essential part for every startup in order to establish themselves in the market. While there are several generic models focusing on scaling a business, there seems to be a lack of scientific research focusing on the challenges during the process of scaling. This paper describes a qualitative study focusing on purely digital companies which have scaled or are trying to scale. Resulting in finding several distinct challenges and barriers related to scaling digital companies, by comparing and contrasting growth literature with the data generated by this study. Besides these challenges, our findings suggest that B2B and B2C companies are facing different challenges during their scaling processes.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to describe and explain how Swedish gazelle firms, as representatives of high growth SMEs, respond to challenges in their economic and social contexts in sustaining growth. Furthermore, the purpose is to provide relevant and valuable recommendations to managers of rapidly growing companies. Finally, this thesis aims at providing suggestions for further research. Method - This research was conducted following a multiple case study research design, constituting four companies. Data derives particularly from semi-structured interviews, held with the owners/CEOs of the four case companies. Findings – Taking a combined resource-based and institution-based view, the study shows that even though the importance of commitment to social issues for SMEs increases through periods of rapid growth, the importance is still somewhat limited for the overall success of the firm. Hence, mainly focusing on the economic context is essential for the firm‘s success, albeit the social context becomes an increasingly important factor to bear in mind for runners of SMEs, particularly when it comes to future expansion. Practical implications - For owners and managers of rapidly growing SMEs, it is vital to form a profound understanding of the challenges that can emerge after a period of rapid growth as well as how to how to most adequately respond to those challenges. For this, it greatly helps if a long-term vision on how and how much to grow is developed before the firm enters its period of rapid growth. Moreover, firm owners need to have or develop significant leadership capabilities in order to deal with the increasing amount of and diversity regarding employees. Maroju, Venkateshwarlu. "Growth of Indian microfinance : a case-study-based review of trends and challenges." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/39523.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 67-69).
The microfinance industry in India experienced extraordinary evolution throughout the 1990s and into the new century, and it is now entering a new phase of rapid expansion. But there is still a huge gap between the demand for and supply of microfinance services in India. With its enormous population of poor people, India is attracting increasing attention from commercial players and government agencies, both of which are instrumental to furthering the growth of microfinance. This study reviews the current state of microfinance in India using the case-study approach. Two examples were chosen as representatives of the most prevalent forms of microfinance delivery-the Grameen model and the Self Help Group model. The two cases also represent two diverse schools of thought that dominate the worldwide microfinance industry: for-profit commercial microfinance institutions (MFIs) and not-for-profit NGO MFIs. The study discusses evolving legal structures, strategies, financing models, and operating models used by Indian MFIs to rapidly grow their operations in order to fulfill the huge unmet demand. It also covers the legal, financial, and operational challenges facing MFIs, and concludes with recommendations for remedial measures and policy changes that are required to support the urgent need to expand microfinance services in India.
by Venkateshwarlu Maroju.
M.B.A.

Cay, Gillian Elizabeth. "Resolving the growth challenges of high technology new ventures : an absorptive capacity perspective." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3383/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how high technology new ventures (HTNVs) in the life science industry in Scotland leverage external knowledge to resolve challenges that they face at critical events to enable the firm to grow. The theoretical approach is holistic, drawing on the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalisation, which are all key drivers of the growth of HTNVs. Reviews of this diverse literature point to the key role of knowledge for the growth of these firms, however, little is known about the processes and routines that enable them to leverage knowledge. Therefore, the construct of absorptive capacity (ACAP) is an appropriate lens to investigate how HTNVs resolve growth challenges by leveraging external knowledge. As this is a complex issue, this exploratory study takes a holistic view, drawing on the interpretivist paradigm, and utilises in-depth case studies to examine key challenges that firms face at critical events, and the knowledge leverage processes associated with these events. A key finding is that HTNVs experiencing rapid growth have to address a number of growth challenges simultaneously in relation to the three key drivers of growth. Therefore, the knowledge processes that support this activity transcend functional boundaries and are interlinked with and interdependent on these simultaneous business processes. With limited internal resources, the demand of these firms for external knowledge to resolve these challenges is acute. The six types of knowledge that firms were found to require are: market, technical, managerial, regulatory, internationalisation and relational knowledge. The firm’s ability to combine different types of knowledge from outwith the firm and from within the firm’s knowledge stocks to find solutions for the challenges they face is important for their growth. The major contribution of this thesis is that the pace of the leverage of knowledge at critical events is maximised when HTNVs have multiple enablers of ACAP in place. This has emerged from combining other findings on key enablers and temporality of ACAP. A new process model of ACAP is proposed, which highlights the connection between the individual- and firm-level ACAP, and emphasises the importance of effective communication within the firm and the effective management of the firm’s knowledge stocks to maximise the firm’s ability to exploit the knowledge it acquires. The model also highlights the importance of social capital to the ACAP process, in particular to the timely acquisition and assimilation of knowledge. This process model significantly enhances the understanding of how knowledge is leveraged through the ACAP process. There are important implications in these findings, amongst which there is evidence that social capital provides the firm with timely access to the knowledge, in particular the links of board members. In dynamic industry environments where there are constant technological advances and market opportunities are short-lived, the ability to assimilate and respond to opportunities and threats quickly is crucial to the firm’s competitive advantage. For the management of HTNVs, understanding how to optimise the use of their Boards of Directors, including venture capital representatives, in order to leverage their experience and connections, can significantly enhance the firm’s competitive advantage. Furthermore, exploiting the firm’s social capital in order to access and assimilate knowledge more effectively could have a significant impact on the growth of the firm. At policy level, it is imperative that small firms are encouraged to invest in the enablers of ACAP, to develop appropriate connections across the value chain that can assist their growth and, in particular, to ensure that they appoint to their Board Non-Executive Directors who are appropriate to the key challenges they are facing.

Abstract:
Scania is a leading European developer and manufacturer of trucks, buses and engines, based in Södertälje in Sweden. From traditionally having been focused on offering their customer high quality products, Scania is now moving towards becoming a solution provider. This requires a combination of products and services and a deeper understanding of their customers’ business. Hauliers are one of Scania’s most important customer segments. In order to improve its solution offer, Scania wants to gain a deeper understanding about how hauliers develop. Recent studies at Scania have shown deficiencies in knowledge about haulier development. To fill this gap, this master’s thesis was initiated with the purpose of "gaining insight into haulier development and listing implications for Scania‟s business and service development". The aim of the study was to identify drivers, challenges and other important factors for growing hauliers. This result was then used to understand how Scania can contribute to its haulier customers’ growth by offering services. Seven hauliers were selected based on a number of criteria and studied closely. The results showed a gap between the services offered by Scania today and the services suggested after analyses. Particularly, it indicated that non vehicle related services could help hauliers make crucial steps in their development. Scania is advised to further deepen its understanding about haulier development. By doing this, Scania would take an important step into becoming the solution provider it aims to be.

Abstract:
Thesis: M.C.P., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, 2018.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 59-61).
The Greater Boston area has some of the highest housing costs in the country, a trend which has only intensified through the nation's recovery from the recent global financial crisis. Greater Boston has a fragmented municipal system, with individual cities and towns controlling their own land use regulations. This fragmentation has led to a system where cities and towns regulate land use in an uncoordinated manner, leaving the entire region with a shortage of housing and raising housing costs. In 2004, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts enacted Chapter 40R, the Smart Growth Overly District Act, to incentivize communities to implement zoning districts that allow dense housing by right. To date, very few communities in Greater Boston have enacted Chapter 40R districts, and once those districts are enacted, very few of the newly-zoned units are built. This thesis seeks to explore the causes behind these phenomena. Communities in the region are loath to implement 40R districts because of an aversion to growth, in particular multifamily development. Misconceptions about program requirements may also prevent town planners from using 40R as a planning tool for their communities. Developers don't often utilize 40R as a permitting mechanism because it is riskier to implement than Chapter 40B permitting. Even when 40R districts are established, units are not always built because of market conditions or land availability. While 40R has produced successful developments across the state, this report calls into question whether an incentive-based development policy is sufficient to deal with the region's current housing shortage.
by Matthew S. Abstract:
The problem of achieving and sustaining growth is vital for companies in any country market, but it is even more crucial for companies in an emerging market, such as Russia. Meanwhile, some companies in the Russian market succeed not only in growing but also in implementing several socially oriented activities and projects in their strategies. Thus, we identify what are the possible obstacles to growth in the industrial and internal firm environment like, and analyze how companies overcome them. Besides that, we aim to study the forms of corporate social responsibility activity, that Russian companies are engaged in, and how consistent this activity is with the companies' strategies and goals. We have conducted a qualitative case study of five Russian companies, which represent different segments of IT industry. The semi-structured interviews with the managers from the company have been the main sources of the empirical data, however some additional secondary data has also been used. Further on, the gathered empirical data served the materiel for the analysis of the dynamic capabilities the companies possess to overcome the growth challenges they encounter, what strategic innovation processes they implement in their strategies and if there are some socially oriented activities, including particular projects, that the companies are engaged in. If a company practices a certain socially oriented activity then the consistency of this activity with the company's strategy and goals has been analyzed. As social activities are seen as a prerequisite for sustainable business we also analyze if the companies bring natural value to the society and the environment. The results show that the companies with rather high growth figures may lack certain dynamic capabilities, which are or will be needed to overcome a particular growth challenge. Four of the five companies prove to act proactively, thus they have the prerequisite for strategic innovations. These companies also implemented different types of strategic innovation, although not the radical one.For those companies, that are engaged in socially oriented activities, these activities are seen as consistent with the companies' strategies.Meanwhile, only one company implements environmental-friendly solutions, thus it comes closest to running sustainable business. The general provided recommendations for the companies are to develop lacking dynamic capabilities to overcome growth challenges, to act proactively in order to be ready to implement strategic innovations and develop and keep their social activities consistent with their strategies.

Itegboje, J. O. "The growth of agency labour in the Nigerian oil industry and its challenges for trade union organisation." Thesis, University of Salford, 2018. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/47339/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over recent years amidst intensified and unrelenting global economic competitive pressures that have shaped the business environment within which organisations operate, many employers in both the private and public sectors in different countries around the world have responded by seeking to reduce labour costs through the specific mechanism of non-standard forms of employment (Forde and Slater, 2010; Teicher et al. 2006; Sanchez, and Schmitz, 200; Kalleberg 2000). This process has taken a particularly sharp form within the highly strategically important Nigerian oil industry, giving rise to a contemporary labour market characterised by widespread flexibility of work. It has resulted in a significant decline in so-called ‘standard forms of employment’ involving regular, permanent work alongside an alarming growth in ‘non-standard forms of employment’ involving vulnerable, precarious work (Adenugba and Jawadu, 2014; Kalleberg, 2009; Evans et al. 2007; Connelly and Gallagher, 2006). With the growing trend towards the agency workers through the use of employment agencies, there has been the emergence and consolidation of two-tier work arrangements involving differential employment relations contracts (Burgess et al. 2013:4084). Adopting a Marxist analytical framework, this thesis examined the ways in which the shift from direct-standard employment to a triangular employment relation in a crucial Nigerian arena of employment has become an increasing source of collective conflict within the employment relationships, between workers and their unions on the one hand, and the employers on the other. In the process, it considers the challenges and dilemmas for trade unions attempting to defend the terms and conditions of employment of different groups of workers, as well as the limits and potential of solidaristic forms of union within a highly fragmented context. The research study has been framed on a critical realism paradigm, with a focus on a mixed methods approach involving questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. These involved the management, trade unions, ministry of labour and employment, employment agencies, and workers on different employment contracts within three of the main Nigerian multinational oil companies, namely Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron. The multi-dimensional evidence explains the basic factors that have given rise to the growing trend of agency workers, the impacts of this trend on employment relationships, and the dynamics of trade union organisation and resistance. Findings suggest that the growth of agency workers in the Nigerian oil industry has led to an entrenching of dual and fractionalised internal labour markets and an increase in managerial control, with an accompanying undermining of the coverage and effectiveness of collective bargaining and trade union representation and organisation. Evidence is provided that documents the way the oil industry trade unions, while not able to successfully oppose the growing trend of agency labour, have nonetheless attempted to mitigate and challenge the encroachment of work arrangements amongst workers on standard forms of employment, but have been confronted with enormous challenges in attempting to collectively organise and represent agency workers in the industry. The findings of this thesis could help in understanding the implications of change in employment relations, and contribute to overcoming the current limits of thinking with regard to the use of agency workers, and furthers the current discussion on the ‘high-road decent work principles and equality’ of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Yuspin, Wardah. "Facilitating the growth of Islamic banking law and Islamic banking in Indonesia : new laws and new challenges." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.713882.

Full text
Abstract:
The growth of Islamic banking and financial services (IBF) industry has generated considerable interest in the financial world in recent decades with no exception in Indonesia. The legal infrastructure for the development of IBF in Indonesia has been strengthened with the enactment of Islamic Banking Law No. 21 of 2008. The law includes two new arrangements that are expected to bring about changes in the IBF industry; namely Articles 55 and 68. In light of those articles, it is also essential to observe the development and practice of this industry in selected countries; namely Malaysia and Pakistan. Despite the difference of their legal systems (the practice of the Common Law Systems there as opposed to the Civil Law System in Indonesia), these two countries have been chosen for the resemblance of their IBF industry with the one developed, practiced and offered in. Indonesia. Particularly in Malaysia, the promulgation of the Central Bank Act 2009 and the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 were aimed at enhancing its legal infrastructure that will not only protect its IBF industry but will ensure stability, growth and confidence of all players and stakeholders. Substantively, Article 68 deals with the Islamic window/ Islamic unit separation. It is quite natural to conclude that Window Model serves only as a transitory mechanism. Therefore, that model is mandated and/or limited to be a mere spun-off or temporary structure for IBF institutions from their parent banks before subsequently becoming a full-fledged institutions. Since this is mandatory, any Islamic window that violates this provision will be fined, or further, their licence will be revoked. Meanwhile in those particular countries this model is still allowed and can be adopted by conventional banks offering IBF services. However, the conventional banks will only be allowed to, offer IBF services once they have demonstrated their serious commitment to IBF and have a clear roadmap towards full conversion of their operations into a full fledged Islamic bank. Whilst Article 55 (1) affirms that the religious court is the institution authorised to settle dispute on matters concerning Islam and the economy, Article 55 (2), nonetheless, provides that if the litigants are in agreement, they can choose to refuse submission to the jurisdiction of the religious court jurisdiction and alternatively choose another forum such as district court to adjudicate the dispute. The selection and submission to another forum, such as the district court, can potentially bring about a conflict of authority and jurisdictions between the district courts and the religious courts. However, according to the decision of the Constitutional Court No.93PUU-X/2012 the Islamic financial disputes fall under the absolute competence of the religious court. While in those selected countries, the Islamic disputes are tried and heard before the jurisdiction of their civil courts, despite the fact that there is a designated civil court in Malaysia that will handle disputes relating to IBF. That choice of forum to render decision on this dispute raises the problem, since many judges who render decision on this case are in favour of the civil law rather than Shari'a (Islamic law). While the Islamic disputes are not merely commercial disputes but involves the questions of Shari matter(s). In this regards, a closer scrutiny on the Malaysian Central Bank Act 2009 will be useful since it provides for reference to the Shari'ah Advisory Council by the courts or arbitrators adjudicating matters relating to IBF disputes. With the rapid advancement of IBF industry and various products and services it offers, disputes are then inevitable. Premised on this realization, this thesis strongly examines and advocates that a proper and strong legal framework and infrastructure as well as substantial support of the legal fraternity are crucial prerequisites for a healthy advancement and significant growth of IBF industry. Therefore with the inclusion the Art 68 and 55 of the Islamic Banking Law, this industry is seen moved towards this advancement.

Al-Matani, Khalid. "The influence of entrepreneurial leadership on factors affecting SME growth in supply chains : the case of Oman." Thesis, Brunel University, 2018. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/17158.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores in depth the factors influencing growth in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from a supply chain perspective and examines how entrepreneurship affects them in Omani SMEs. The study is undertaken in order to complement the scarce literature on SMEs related to supply chains and improve the understanding of what factors are crucial in determining growth in them. The research is focused on the role of entrepreneurial qualities and behaviours for the growth of SMEs in developing countries, as their economies are more dependent on smaller companies. The context of this research is within Oman, which represents a typical developing economy containing a large number of active SMEs. The main factors for SMEs growth are identified through a literature review of past and contemporary research studies on supply chain networks, SMEs, growth and entrepreneurship. The factors are divided into areas related to the positions of the company (market position of the firm, negotiating power, Supply chain relationships and firm's image), and to SMEs' value-adding capabilities (cost optimisation, and innovations). The review also reveals that the critical entrepreneurial traits are: managers' culture and motivations, strategic thinking, sense for opportunities, risk-taking, continuous learning, their leadership abilities and networking skills. Based on the literature review findings a conceptual framework is proposed. This research is exploratory and explanatory in nature and relies on a qualitative approach to find out how entrepreneurship relates to growth in SMEs. Primary data is collected from in-depth semi-structured interviews with managers in 25 Omani SMEs from various industrial and service sectors 10 representing different supply chain positions. The data is processed through content analysis using the factors identified from the literature review as initial themes. The findings affirm the importance of SMEs' supply chain positions and their value adding capabilities for growth. Furthermore, all elements of entrepreneurship are found to affect growth factors. Results show positive attitude and growth aspirations lead to more proactive market behaviour, while strategic thinking helps managers choose more sustainable market positions. Results indicate leadership improves company costs by increasing employees' motivation and productivity and also facilitates the implementation of innovations. Learning orientation is stated to be crucial for exploring new ideas for innovations, while a good sense for opportunity helps managers evaluate them and choose the right ones. Finally, risk-taking propensity emerges as instrumental in the actual undertaking of innovation projects as it is needed for initiating them.

Mesa, Cruz Jose Bernardo. "Assessment of Physiological Challenges in Overwintering Black Bears (Ursus americanus): Active Gestation, Neonatal Growth, and Skeletal Muscle Conservation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/96197.

Full text
Abstract:
The American black bear (ABB) (Ursus americanus) exhibits physiological strategies highly synchronized with the environment. Such strategies enable bears to exploit food resources when available and survive the winter months by hibernating without ingesting food or water. However, there are multiple aspects of ABB hibernation physiology that remain unknown. For instance, there is conflicting evidence on the occurrence of ABB pseudopregnancy (a physiological state in which a non-pregnant bear exhibits progesterone levels similar to gravid bears in the absence of an actual pregnancy). Also, there is little known about postnatal development of cubs or the influence of maternal traits on embryonic implantation and cub growth. Finally, the role of satellite cells (SCs – stem cells able to regenerate muscle fibers) play in maintaining muscle functionality during hibernating remains understudied. Therefore, I aimed to assess these four aforementioned aspects using wild ABBs held temporarily captive at Virginia Tech's Black Bear Research Center (VT-BBRC). The major findings of this dissertation are: 1) I suggest that wild ABBs do not experience pseudopregnancy as a reproductive strategy; 2) interactions between litter size and cub age best described postnatal cub weight dynamics and organ development. Twin cubs were heavier than single and triplet cubs, yet cubs from all litter sizes reached similar weights after mothers began consuming food post hibernation. Single cubs experienced delayed timing in ear, eye, and teeth development compared to other litter sizes; 3) maternal traits such as higher body weight and higher ability to gain weight in the fall are closely associated with earlier timing of embryonic implantation than in leaner females, which gained less weight per day in the fall; and 4) SC ability to generate muscle fibers is increased during ABB hibernation. I propose that maintaining the SCs are an important potential pathway for limiting muscle atrophy during bear hibernation. Understanding pre and postnatal development of ABBs is important for exploring factors related to climate, maternal characteristics, which possibly affect birthing phenology, and fitness of bears experiencing rapid anthropogenic environmental change. Functional aspects of bear muscle conservation are interesting for potentially for elucidating avenues to improve treatments for human metabolic disorders such as muscular dystrophy, sarcopenia, and disuse atrophy.
Ph. Nqadini, Mlungisi Patrick. "Development challenges in Khayelitsha : an analysis of related issues." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51684.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MAdmin)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Apartheid statutes like the former Group Areas Act created what is referred as "Apartheid Dormitory Cities". Khayelitsha is a typical creation of apartheid. As a result Khayelitsha faces many socio-economic challenges such as poverty, low standard of living characterised by low income distribution or no income, high rate of unemployment, illiteracy, education problems, housing problems, health problems and poor economic conditions. Attempts were made to create civic associations and development structures to deal with socio-economic challenges in Khayelitsha, but all those attempts never brought about development solutions. The Khayelitsha community tends to have a poor participatory planning role in development related issues. Khayelitsha as an apartheid legacy city will take a long time to dismantle in social, economic and purely practical terms. Rebuilding Khayelitsha equitably will be a tough exercise. The government strives to develop South Africa from a society of racially based compartmentalisation into a non-racial, developed country with equal opportunities, better education, health, housing and employment. These challenges are Khayelitsha's major problems which cannot be solved overnight. The problem faced is the re-integration of the separated zones of the former group areas. This makes it difficult to share the economic resources that are needed in Khayelitsha in order to solve its socio-economic problems. The integration of cities will only come about if the restructuring is in accordance with specific needs of the Khayelitsha community. People of Khayelitsha should be involved in the planning of their own city and be able to make informed decisions. The objective of this thesis is to analyse related development issues and challenges in Khayelitsha and to provide possible solutions contributing to development. Government and development agencies can draw lessons from the recommendations of this thesis and come up with sustainable and people-centred development-related strategies.

Abstract:

Agricultural system in Ghana underperformed because of limited financing, which constrained some small-scale maize and cassava farmers. The purpose of this case study design was to explore the methods that some small-scale maize and cassava farmers in Amankwakrom Subdistrict used in obtaining farm financing. Two themes from the literature review were a lack of collateral for small-scale farm financing and the small-scale farmers cooperative associations? role in farm financing. Regional-scale management sustainability index formed the conceptual framework for this study. Data collection included semistructured face-to-face interviews with 8 fluent English speaking small-scale maize and cassava farmers who have obtained farm financing in the previous years. Using the Microsoft Excel and Non-numerical unstructured data indexing and theorizing software program for data analysis method, 3 major themes emerged: the farmer?s membership benefits of working in cooperative associations; farmer?s ability to provide the collateral requirements for the financial institutions; and farmer?s good loan repayment history. The study findings indicated that some small-scale maize and cassava farmers obtained farm loans because they used the cooperative associations as their collateral assets in order to satisfy for the requirements of the financial institutions. Social implications include the potential to guide the small-scale maize and cassava farmers to access farm credits to use in expanding their farm sizes. Expansion in farm sizes may result in more maize and cassava production that can help eliminate hunger and reduce poverty in the Amankwakrom Subdistrict of Ghana.

Abstract:
Food processing micro- and small-scale enterprises (MSEs) play an important role in the national economic development of Tanzania. Though many of them have great growth potential, they face a number of constraints hindering further development, and large amounts of cooking oil are imported each year. The aim of thesis has therefore been to identify and analyse the different factors affecting these MSEs in order to find out which the major growth challenges are. The case study is mainly based on individual semi-structured interviews with sunflower oil processors and farmers in Babati districts, conducted in February and March 2016, and earlier research and studies on the topic of MSE growth make up the theoretical framework used for analysis of the data. The findings show that there are indeed numerous challenges facing these processors, and the major constraint was found to be lack of capital; an issue causing or worsening a majority of the other challenges at hand. Other problems are related to raw material, equipment & electricity for processing, regulations, market accessibility, and competition. These obstacles need to be overcome in order to enable the industry's expansion within and outside of Tanzania, and further research is recommended.

Bos, Petra Marianne. "Regional differences in adipose tissue development : effects of nutritional challenges on genes involved in insulin, insulin like growth factor and glucocorticoid signalling." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11360/.

Full text
Abstract:
Adipose tissue development is regulated by a complex interaction between the local actions of insulin, glucocorticoids and insulin like growth factors (IGFs). A series of experiments was undertaken in which the normal development of individual adipose tissue depots and their development following periconceptional under- and overnutrition, formula feeding and juvenile obesity was investigated in sheep. Expression and abundance of glucocorticoid receptor (GR), 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (11β-HSDs), insulin receptor, p85 subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (p85), glucose transporter 4 (Glut4), insulin like growth factor (IGF) 1 and 2 and their receptors (IGF-R) were measured as markers of sensitivity to glucocorticoids, insulin and IGFs in individual adipose tissue depots. It was found that during early postnatal life omental adipose tissue grows faster than other depots. In all investigated groups there were marked differences in the expression of all investigated genes between adipose tissue depots. No effect was found of periconceptional nutrition on expression of the investigated genes. Weight of the mother prior to conception was negatively associated with omental GR and 11β-HSD1. Free fatty acid levels at 4 months of age were related to omental and subcutaneous 11β-HSD1 expression. Perirenal expression of IGF1R at 4 months was negatively correlated with perirenal and subcutaneous adipose tissue mass. IGF1R expression correlated with IR and GR expression. Formula feeding resulted in reduced expression of Glut4 and increased 11β-HSD1 expression. A combination of formula feeding and juvenile obesity resulted in a redistribution of adipose tissue in favour of the perirenal depot. Obesity per se resulted in a reduction of the expression of all genes and proteins examined. We have shown significant differences in markers of tissue sensitivity to the actions of insulin, glucocorticoids and insulin like growth factors between different adipose tissue depots in the body, highlighting the importance of examining those depots individually in future studies.

Abstract:
Internal labour migration is an important livelihood strategy for poor groups worldwide. Aims and objectives This research aims to answer the question "What is appropriate policy framework to address the health needs of the Indian urban migrants?" The research analyses existing policies and compares policies in arrange of countries that have developed mechanisms to address migrant's health needs. Transferable lessons will be drawn to develop a policy framework to address health needs of Indian migrants. Recommendations to improve the health of urban migrants will be made. Methods The research involves a mixed methods approach - literature review, questionnaire survey, qualitative interviews and site visits to understand successes and challenges in the implementation of migration and health policies in India and other countries. A literature review was conducted to understand the impact of migration - its health outcomes and policies in India and abroad. A pre-tested, interviewer-administered questionnaire survey was conducted using random sampling with 4000 migrants in Nashik to understand their access to health care. In-depth interviews were conducted with policy makers in ministries including health and labour, migrant's organizations and international agencies in India, China, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam to understand the successes and challenges in the implementation of migration and health policies and learn from their experiences. Conclusions Internal migration is rising in India mainly from the scheduled tribes and castes. Lack of migration specific data, state specific programmes/policies linked with state citizenship and lack of federal structures are key challenges to meet the unique needs of Indian migrants. Lessons for India were learnt from other countries included initiating a migration census, introducing a national portable health insurance and a comprehensive 'whole government approach'. Recommendations were made to enable the government to facilitate appropriate policy to improve the health and status of the migrants.

Small business creation is a vital factor to any economy, but there is little research done on the challenges faced during intermediate stages in the life of a business that may prevent the success of an organization. The goal of this investigation is to determine what controllable factors inhibit growth within an organization, and how to minimize these barriers in order to reach success. The research focus is on small businesses in operation for more than four years, since this is the period in which support from governmental and private institutions becomes scarce and the organization is forced tomake decisions; not only to survive, but to promote evolution for the firm. Sejeng, Mankopane Sydney. "The practical theological challenges faced by the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa Fountain of Life Congregation in the Winterveldt community." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17983.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is about the practical theological challenges faced by the AFM of SA Fountain of life congregation in the Winterveldt community. The Fountain of life congregation has minimal involvement in the community of Winterveldt, a community plagued by numerous life threatening plights. The congregation is in a survival mode after stagnating for a number of years and with serious challenges of declining or even facing possible extinction. This study's goal is to develop a practical theological theory, strategy and process which the AFM of SA Fountain of life congregation would be inspired to implement in order to contribute towards arresting theological, social, economical and moral degradation in the community of Winterveldt. The researcher employed a practical theological methodology and explored areas that are vital for the answering of the research problem, "What can be done in the Fountain of life congregation to maximize the participation of all members to serve the community of Winterveldt as well as the larger society?" It is hypothesized that Practical Theology will give the AFM of SA Fountain of life guidance and equip this faith community and its leaders theologically to consider their vocation, to develop a practical theological ecclesiology, a way to be the true, faithful and effective local church which is the salt and light of the world, including Winterveldt. The study explored the "world" in which Fountain of life finds itself, in terms of its contextual as well as the congregation's identity analysis. The normative aspects of being a missional church which covered the missional identity, empowerment and involvement of laity, and missional leadership were elaborated, while spiritual discernment with areas particular to Fountain of life received attention in the normative aspects of spiritual discernment. It is recommended that the identity of Fountain of life be grounded in the mission of the Trinitarian God (missio Dei of the Trinitarian God). The missionary identity and character of Fountain of life should be built and developed upon the eight dominant patterns found in a missional church. The researcher strongly encourages the Fountain of life congregation to employ the missional leadership strategies while engaging in a total involvement leadership style, which integrates high concern for getting the task completed and a high concern for good people relationship. The leadership of Fountain of life is further encouraged to use the suggested laity empowerment strategies in order to empower, develop, and involve the laity. Missional transformation can only succeed if the laity is empowered and committed to deal with new realities. Leadership is key in engaging the laity. The pastor and the leadership of Fountain of life must teach, educate, lead, and engage the congregation, and also partner with other communities of faith and organizations especially the South African Partnership for Missional Churches (SAPMC) to succeed. Fountain of life should practice missional praxis theology, a holistic theological model that describes the methodology for congregations to develop their own contextual ecclesiology within the parameters of God‘s overall design for the Church.

yes
The African continent is a sleeping giant which will increasingly be a player to be reckoned with on the global stage. At the same time, its migration potential will be multiplied by Africa’s forthcoming demographic explosion. Consequently, the EU and Africa have a shared interest in working together towards making African development sustainable. African integration will be key towards speeding up this process. This paper first evaluates the stakes of the African challenge for the European Union. It considers the economic potential that can be unleashed by speeding up integration processes in Africa. Second, it argues that Africa will be ‘the China of the 21st Century’, and that any development, positive or negative, taking place there will have large repercussions in Europe, and that therefore the EU and Africa are communities of destiny in need of a joint approach towards African industrialisation. Finally, it provides a roadmap of important steps that Europe needs to consider in its endeavour to support African development.

Abstract:
The non-interest and profit-loss sharing schemes of Islamic finance (IF) are attracting increasing global attention. Despite exposure to the similar opportunities as other Western countries that have adopted the financial business model there is little evidence of Islamic finance windows operating in the conventional institutions in Canada. This thesis takes a qualitative approach to bring the issue forward in Canadian social science literature by exploring the perceived challenges to, and the potential of, the development of IF offerings with a focus on factors affecting the supply and management decisions in the industry. The study used an inductive approach with archival data and critical survey of literature to arrive at the hypotheses surrounding the challenges. These were tested deductively by semi-structured interviews and panel discussions both in Canada and the US on a sample of senior officials involved in both IF and conventional financial institutions. Using a thematic analysis the study arrived at findings supporting the hypotheses related to awareness, regulation, management intent and internal resources. In the external environment, factors affecting strategic decision on offering IF services are mainly due to regulation, lack of awareness, even among Muslim communities, or misgivings about Sha’riah authenticity. Internally, highly customized IT infrastructures, lack of funds and foreign investment make it unfeasible. Management interest when proposed with the concept is high but not in a top-down manner and there is an overall uncertainty avoidance culture and little proactivity with market research. Access to specific Sha’riah knowledge is not considered a hurdle anymore. It is apparent that investments in Sha’riah compliant stocks would be easiest to set up. Mortgage structures can be affected by the capital market structure, even if not tax structures. Knowledge on this can have implications for banks seeking to expand their investment portfolios and aid government policies.

Monyebodi, Monyaku. "The challenge of formalising the local economy : South African township retail industry." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/81686.

Abstract:
After more than two decades of democracy, South Africa is still faced with challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. The informal sector is one that presents opportunities for making a positive contribution towards solving social problems that South Africa is faced with. While the informal sector is large and offers flexibility in employment, it is associated with low productivity and poor governance as traders in the informal sector are not obliged to register their businesses and therefore cannot make tax contributions. The lack of formalisation of the informal sector not only impacts the government for not being able to account for the sector, but it also creates barriers for those trading in the sector. The study adopted qualitative research methods to gain insights into describing and exploring the meaning research participants use to construct and interpret their world of reality, such as formalising the informal sector to stimulate economic growth in South African Townships. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with business owners in the retail informal sector, managers of big corporates in retail in the formal sector and government employees from various departments who were represented by those in relevant positions such as directors, heads of departments, regional and board members. Interviews were analysed by means of thematic analysis. The key findings from literature indicated that the informal sector is broad and there is no one definition of the informal sector. It was also established that there is a direct relationship that exists between the state and the informal sector, however there is an indirect relationship that exists between the formal and informal sector as further explained in institutional and stakeholder theory. The lack of development in the informal sector can be attributed to the non-existence of policies to guide and regulate the existence of the informal sector. The insights shared from the interviews pointed to the applicability of the proposed model in terms of formalising the informal sector.
Mini Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2021.
Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)
MBA
Unrestricted

Ekström, Emma, and Evelina Pallin. "Challenge accepted : A qualitative study on how small firms can manage human resources when growing." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-149307.

Abstract:
Business growth has been a widely interesting topic among researchers throughout the years. Most research has emphasised growth as an outcome that considers different measures to growth, whereas the outcome of growth that reflects upon managing challenges when growing and growth as a process that refers to how firms adapt internally whilst growing have been much more neglected. As an organisation grows, human capital has been suggested as one of the most critical aspects to manage when firms need to develop knowledge, competencies, and skills beyond what already exists within the organisation. Small firms in comparison to their larger counterparts seldom have specific departments to manage human resources, which leaves room for interesting areas to understand how small firms can manage processes to develop human resources beyond those already existing as firms grow. As small firms grow and encounter various challenges in need of management, absorptive capacity considers means for managers to address growth challenges by realising the value of new and external knowledge to produce dynamic capabilities, which in turn enable firms to align resources to the changing environment of a growing organisation. Previous research highlights the need to develop a practical understanding of internal processes that managers apply when managing a wider range of competencies. The purpose of this study serves to create an understanding of how small firms that encounter growth challenges can manage human resources to develop necessary skills and competencies beyond existing means as organisations grow. To develop this understanding, this study develops a conceptual framework based upon human capital, absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities with the guiding research question: How can small firms manage human resources when growing? Through a qualitative study with data collected through semi-structured interviews, this study concludes that small firms can manage human resources through various processes, in which organisational culture should serve as a foundation throughout the entire process of managing human resources. This study also concludes that as organisations grow, it is important to be aware of and question current processes to efficiently address challenges in changing environments. Furthermore, this study considers the importance of being an attractive firm and to manage human resources through means of defining a market to attract and acquire human resources when growing. With previous research highlighting the need to develop a more practical understanding of processes that managers utilise when managing a growing organisation, this study contributes to existing literature by emphasising the role of the manager throughout the process of managing human resources. The study also provides practical reasonings for small firms to remain efficient and survive in a market dominated by competition of larger organisations with financial resources to outcompete smaller and less established firms.

Tavares, Carmen. "Ajuda externa e crescimento económico: o Millennium challenge account em Cabo Verde." Master's thesis, Universidade de Évora, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10174/18443.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT; The debate about the question of foreign aid effectiveness goes back decades. While on one side, there are researchers that conclude that foreign aid have a positive impact on economic growth, on the other side, there are those who conclude that the flows of aid only contribute to promote corruption, poverty and perpetuate bad governments. This work investigates the question of foreign aid effectiveness in the economic growth rates of Cape Verde. Since Cape Verde became recently a beneficiary of the new program of foreign aid, the Millennium Challenge Account, it would be interesting to understand if the flows of foreign aid and the MCA have given positive results in the case of Cape Verde. To reach these goals, the annual reports of the Central Bank of Cape Verde, together with other sources, have been analysed and the data refers to 23 years. The results of the econometric analyses suggest that foreign aid has had a positive impact on economic growth in Cape Verde. Even though the Official Development Assistance did not present statistically significant coefficient, the Private Flows seem to be largely positive and significant. The impact of the MCA program also revealed a positive impact on the economic growth of the Cape Verdean's islands, and it reinforces the idea that when the flow of aid is directed at those sectors that promote economic growth, its impact on the economy is largely positive and significant.

Mentzer, Nathan. "Academic Performance as a Predictor of Student Growth in Achievement and Mental Motivation During an Engineering Design Challenge in Engineering and Technology Education." DigitalCommons@USU, 2008. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/31.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this correlational research study was to determine if students’ academic success was correlated with: (a) the student change in achievement during an engineering design challenge; and (b) student change in mental motivation toward solving problems and critical thinking during an engineering design challenge. Multiple experimental studies have shown engineering design challenges increase student achievement and attitude toward learning, but conflicting evidence surrounded the impact on higher and lower academically achieving students. A high school classroom was chosen in which elements of engineering design were purposefully taught. Eleventh-grade student participants represented a diverse set of academic backgrounds (measured by grade point average [GPA]). Participants were measured in terms of achievement and mental motivation at three time points. Longitudinal multilevel modeling techniques were employed to identify significant predictors in achievement growth and mental motivation growth during the school year. Student achievement was significantly correlated with science GPA, but not math or communication GPA. Changes in achievement score over time are not significantly correlated with science, math, or communication. Mental motivation was measured by five subscales. Mental focus was correlated with math and science GPA. Mental focus increases over time were negatively correlated with science GPA, which indicated that the initial score differential (between higher and lower science GPA students) was decreased over time. Learning orientation and cognitive integrity were not correlated with GPA. Creative problem solving was correlated with science GPA, but gains over time were not correlated with GPA. Scholarly rigor was correlated with science GPA, but change over time was not correlated with GPA. (284 pages)
