Chalmer?s version of two-dimensional semantics offers interesting and original solutions to traditional problems of neo-Fregean and neo-Russellian theories of meaning. The development of important models for urban mission took place in early nineteenth-century Glasgow. Thomas Chalmers’ work is widely known, but that of David Nasmith has been the subject of less study. This article explores the ideas shared by Chalmers and Nasmith, and their influence on the development of the city mission movement. Areas of common ground included the need for extensive domestic visitation, the mobilisation of the laity including a middle- class lay leadership, efficient organisation, emphasis on education, and discerning provision of charity. Abstract In this paper, by analyzing the Chalmers-Searle debate about Chalmers’ zombie thought experiment, I attempt to determine the implications that the irreducibility of consciousness has for the truth of materialism. While Chalmers claims that the irreducibility of consciousness forces us to embrace dualism, Searle claims that it has no deep metaphysical import and, in particular, that it is fully consistent with his materialist theory of mind. Abstract:
SUMMARY In Belgium, influenza virus was isolated from swine in 22 epizootics of respiratory tract disease in swine during 1984. In 8 of the epizootics, H3N2 influenza virus, related to the A/Port Chalmers/1/73 strain, was isolated. Intratracheal inoculation of the isolates induced clinical signs. It was concluded that the A/Port Chalmers/1/73 strain was established in the Belgian swine population and was responsible for the epizootics of respiratory tract disease in swine.
