Abstract:
In this thesis, we develop a methodology to obtain the probabilities of qualifying and relegating of teams, in soccer championships. The methodology consists of four steps. In the first step, we fit time series models to the series of number of goals scored in soccer matches. We account for the effects of playing at home, soccer players and changes of coaches, by introducing explanatory variables. Confidence intervals and hipothesis tests are obtained by bootstrap. In the second step, we get probability distributions of the future matches results, by combining preditive distributions of the fitted models via the Maximum Entropy Principle. In the third step, we use the distributions of the matches results to generate simulation sceneries for the champhionship. In the forth and last step, we finally estimate the probabilities of qualifying and relegating of the teams, through the relative frequencies of these events, in a great number of sceneries generated. The empirical work was carried out using data from Brazilian Champhionship/1999 and João Havelange Cup/2000.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to observe psychological, physiological, and performance changes to determine when two high-level weightlifters were peaked for a major competition. We addressed this purpose by conducting a two-part case study series with one USA international level female and one USA national level male weightlifter. Both athletes were considered to be peaked on competition day. The results support our hypothesis that jumping performance would be peaked on competition day corresponding with an increased recovery and decreased stress state. However, contrary to our hypothesis, each athlete exhibited small decreases in muscle size leading into the competition relative to baseline values. Further, changes in inflammatory markers were inconsistent for each athlete and were not reduced as hypothesized. Based on our findings, this investigation supports the use of overreaching and tapering for individual strength-power athletes providing insight into underlying psychological and physiological basis for observed changes in performance.

Abstract:
Preparing for a national weightlifting championship: A case series. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000–000, 2019—This study aimed to characterize psychological, physiological, and performance changes of a high-level female (24.5 years; 53.8 ± 0.3 kg; 155.4 cm) and male (25.8 years; 92.7 ± 1.2 kg; 189 cm) weightlifter over 28 weeks while preparing for a national championship. Body mass, hydration, psychological inventories, serum biomarkers, vastus lateralis muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), and squat jump (SJ) performance were assessed weekly beginning 11 weeks from the competition date. Weightlifting performance goals were met for the female athlete (actual total = 159 kg) but not for the male athlete (actual total = 292 kg). Reductions in vastus lateralis CSA possibly took place the week leading into competition for both athletes. Both athletes reported positive recovery-stress states on the day of competition relative to baseline values. Fluctuations between steroid hormone concentrations and inflammatory markers were unpredictable and inconsistent for both athletes throughout the training program. Unloaded SJ height and rate of force development were the highest on competition day for both athletes. Based on these findings, it is possible for high-level male and female weightlifters to achieve and maintain peak preparedness 3–4 days before competition following a 1-week overreach and 3-week exponential taper, where training volume-load is reduced by half and intensity maintained or slightly increased relative to pretaper values. Furthermore, the short recovery and stress scale and SJ testing seem to be useful tools for sport scientists and coaches when monitoring high-level weightlifters preparing for competition.

Huxley, Dianne Julie. "The Development Of Australian Olympic/World Championship Track And Field Athletes." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/19633.

Full text
Abstract:
Australian Olympic-level track and field (T&F) has enjoyed a high profile over several generations and many of Australia’s athletic greats are publicly revered. Since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games (OG), government funding for T&F has increased sevenfold—the majority being channelled into Athletics Australia’s (AA) high-performance programs to improve Australia’s standing at major international championships. However, over this period Australia has dropped in the world T&F rankings and more than two thirds of athletes who represent Australia at the World junior T&F championships [WJC] never make a senior international team. AA’s funding is contingent on athletes’ performances at both the junior and senior global level, but apart from two reports by AA (2004 & 2015), very little research has been conducted in relation to the development of athletes capable of competing on the world stage. Therefore, this thesis seeks to identify and understand—from the perspective of elite Australian T&F athletes and coaches—the major factors influencing the development and trajectory of Australian athletes to the highest global level in the sport (OG and World Track and Field Championships [WC]). The thesis consists of three separate but linked studies that examine the holistic development of elite Australian athletes. As this thesis focuses on the athletes’ development from junior sporting ranks through to the elite senior level, Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory of Human Development provides the underpinning framework to examine the processes (e.g., training activities), personal factors (e.g., psychological strengths) and contextual factors (e.g., family, peers, coaches) acting over time to influence an athlete’s development. Study 1 used a quantitative survey to collect data about the development and success of 73 Australian T&F athletes who competed at the OG or WC between 1956 and 2013. Results indicated that the key influencing factors during development included later specialisation in T&F, involvement in other sports during adolescence and strong social support networks. Also instrumental in athlete development was growing up in a major city and completing tertiary studies. The analysis indicated that athletes progressed to the elite level through different pathways, with the most common being a linear pathway from junior to elite senior athlete. This study also highlighted the importance of the talent development environment (e.g., appropriate training, competition opportunities, social support and good coaching) in facilitating the successful transition of a talented junior through to elite senior levels in T&F. In Study 2, semi-structured interviews were used to elicit a deeper understanding of the developmental experiences of 14 elite junior T&F athletes who transitioned into elite senior careers. Based on the Developmental Model of Sport Participation (DMSP), factors specific to development during the specialising (ages 12–15 yrs) and investment (16 + yrs) stages were investigated. Results revealed training, competition, social support and personal factors as the four key dimensions of talent development during these stages. During the specialising stages, commensurate with the DMSP, athletes were able to balance T&F training with involvement in various other sports and did not focus on their main senior event or fully invest in specialised intense training until towards the end of the investment stage. Experiences at junior international competitions, support from parents and peers and coaching appropriate to their developmental stage were also instrumental in their successful development. Study 3 also used semi-structured interviews to elicit the views of Australian T&F coaches’ in relation to key factors instrumental in the successful development of elite Australian T&F athletes. This study involved 12 coaches who collectively coached over 100 athletes to international level (junior and senior), including several global medallists; thus they provided a comprehensive and unique viewpoint. Coaches perceived athlete characteristics and how talent was fostered through coaching as vital to successful development, and also highlighted several barriers facing athletes on their upward trajectory. Characteristics such as having naturally sound biomechanics and the ability to compete and cope under pressure, together with a strong work ethic and the determination to persevere through the tough times, were some important qualities coaches associated with successful athletes. Fostering talent required access to coaches who provided stage-appropriate training matched to the physical and psychological needs of the individual and facilitated strong coach–athlete relationships and a positive training environment. Conversely, coaches identified the lack of unity between the two main athletic bodies (Little Athletics [LA] [for 5–16 yrs] and Athletics Australia [AA] [for senior athletics]) as responsible for some talent loss in the transition from the junior to senior arm of the sport. Additionally, coaches perceived that the highly competitive structure of LA encourages early specialisation, partly because of the lack of appropriate coach education at that level, as well as pressure to perform in the results-driven culture. Coaches also felt that the lack of support from the sport (e.g., financial, sport science) for talented juniors trying to transition to elite senior status meant many dropped out because it was too difficult to balance study/work with the increased commitment needed to achieve at the elite senior level. The findings from each of the studies were integrated and analysed within Bronfenbrenner’s theoretical framework to provide a better understanding of the key factors associated with the long-term developmental process for elite Australian T&F athletes. Combined results highlighted the importance of matching training loads and volumes to athletes’ physical, mental and emotional development, continuing to incorporate other sports and delaying specialisation until late adolescence. Access to a wide variety and level of competition was also very important, as was psychosocial networks (parents, coaches, peers, sporting bodies), who provided physical resources, tangible and emotional support, motivation and opportunities to develop the physical and psychological skills needed to progress to elite senior levels of T&F. These findings are intended to provide valuable information for all stakeholders (coaches, athletes, parents, administrators) to help identify, develop, retain and maximise the potential of talented young athletes in Australian T&F. In addition, it is hoped the results will provide an impetus and platform for further research, in addition to providing robust evidence upon which AA (the governing body) can base future decisions for the design, delivery and evaluation of their elite programs.

Ross, Kobie. "World Karate Federation championship kumite characteristics determined through video analysis / K. Ross." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4460.

Full text
Abstract:
Physically and mentally, kumite karate has become more demanding ever since the focus has shifted towards winning and attaining success. Physical performance and techniques are now being evaluated on a regular basis to determine whether the training and coaching programs are effective and functional. In this regard, video analysing technology may play a prominent role in attaining and analysing real competition data. It is against this background that the objective of the study was firstly, to determine the kumite characteristics of WKF championship karatekas by making use of video analyses and secondly, to determine the kumite characteristics that discriminate significantly between successful (winners) and less successful (losers) karatekas when making use of video analyses. The video footage of the kumite finals of the 2004 and 2006 WKF World Senior Championships were analysed by means of the Dart fish Team Pro video analysis software package in order to fulfill the first purpose of this study. The kumite characteristics identified by means of the last-mentioned analyses were then included in the discriminate analysis functions in order to fulfill the second aim of this study. All together eight female and 19 male finals were analysed and the winners of each fight were classified as successful and the losers as less successful karatekas. The results indicated that among both genders, gyaku tsuki was the most frequently executed technique, followed by grabbing and kizami tsuki. No other karate techniques emerged as frequently executed techniques during the kumite championships. The jodan was the most targeted area, while the lead front leg shift, followed by the forward lunge and then the overstep were the most frequently used foot movements. Poor scoring rates of 9.9% and 12.85% were observed for females and males respectively with, on average, only 29.3% and 28.5% of techniques used to initiate attacks. A work: rest ratio of 4.93:1 and 3.65:1 was calculated for females and males respectively which, together with the time intervals, indicated that the aerobic energy system is the primary energy contributor to kumite performance. With regard to the discriminators between the successful and less successful kumite karatekas, it was found that gyaku tsuki and kizami tsuki were the primary, significant discriminators for males and only gyaku tsuki for females. Both chudan and jodan were identified as significant discriminators for the males, whereas target area was not identified as a significant discriminator among the female karatekas. The male karatekas also revealed a statistical significant result with regard to the number of initiated attacks. The conclusion that can therefore be drawn from the above-mentioned results are that video analyzing technology can be used effectively to determine the characteristics of kumite and that the number of initiated attacks, punching techniques and the target area were the significant discriminators between successful and less successful karatekas. Gender differences were, however, observed with regard to the different kumite discriminators.
Thesis (M.A. (Human Movement Science)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2009.

Sullivan, Elisha R. "The influence of conference championship games on competitive balance in college football." Kansas State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/7051.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Arts
Department of Economics
Yang M. Chang
College football thrives on the ideas that each school has what it takes to be the best, rivalries are of major importance, and either team can win the game. Competitive balance is what keeps these thoughts alive, offering the last team in the conference the chance to beat their top-ranked opponent, or the mediocre middle-rank team the chance to win a post-season bowl game. Competitive balance provides the level of uncertainty of game outcome that keeps fans coming back every season. Previous research has examined many variables that have an effect on competitive balance. The purpose of this report is to step forward from where previous studies left off and examine the effect of the conference championship game on competitive balance. Five of the eleven NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences currently determine their conference champion by holding a championship game at the end of the season. Recent conference realignments bring about the possibility for two more conferences to establish championship games. Does hosting a conference championship game improve competitive balance within the league? This study examined several measures of competitive balance, including standard deviation measures, the competitive balance ratio, and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. Results suggest a slightly higher level of competitive balance for conferences hosting championship games versus those that do not. However, these results are not statistically significant, and this higher level of competitive balance could be explained by the larger membership of conferences hosting championship games.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates which in-game team statistics are most significant in determining the outcome in a NCAA Division-I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) game. The data was analyzed using logistic and ordinary least squares regression techniques to create models that explained the outcome of the past games. The models were then used to predict games where the actual in-game statistics were unknown. A random sample of games from the 2012 NCAA Division-I Football Championship Subdivision regular season was used to test the accuracy of the models when used to predict future games. Various techniques were used to estimate the in-game statistics in the models for each individual team in order to predict future games. The most accurate technique consisted of using three game medians with respect to total yards gained by the teams in consideration. This technique correctly predicted 78.85% of the games in the sample data set when used with the logistic regression model.

Abstract:
Rally cars are driven on many different types of surfaces. Each type of surface demands a special type of damper setup. In order to achieve optimum performance on the snow covered and icy Swedish roads, the gravel of the Spanish rallies and the smooth tarmac of the German rallies, a large flexibility in the possible damper settings is required. Prodrive, a British motorsport group, has been racing two Mini Countryman as factory team cars for BMW Mini as of Rally D’Italia in Sardinia in May 2011 and has requested that Öhlins Racing AB equips these cars with dampers. Öhlins Racing AB has been developing a damper for rally applications called the TPX. This damper is equipped with an Active Rebound Control system (ARC). The ARC allows for high levels of grip to be achieved together with good chassis control. The TPX damper with its ARC system is quite complex in structure. As there are many parts in the damper which can be altered, optimizing the damper would require a very large number of tests. A physical model of the TPX damper with its ARC system would reduce the time spent in the lab and help speed up the development of the damper. Prodrive would also like to a have a model of the damper that they can use in their model of the entire car which they use to setup the cars for races and to develop the car. The goal of this Master’s Thesis was therefore to create a model based in MatLab Simulink that qualitatively but not necessarily quantitatively replicated the dampers behavioral trends. Components which are very difficult to model, such as shim stacks, needed not be modeled. Their characteristics could be measured in the lab. During this Master’s Thesis project a model for the TPX damper was created using Simulink to model most of the physical parts of the damper. The rest of the model including its inputs and control were taken care of by a GUI. The model functions so simulations can be performed. Plotting the results of the simulations together with data from experimental tests was also made easy by the GUI. The results from comparisons between the simulated damper and the real object indicate that refinements need to be made to the model before it can be put to use as a tool for helping in optimizing the TPX damper’s construction. Hysteresis in the form of friction as well as damper flexibility does not seem to be negligible. The variation of the oil’s compressibility and the dynamic behavior of the check valves also need to be looked into. The graphs from the simulations seem to replicate the real dampers performance trends as intended. The numerical magnitudes of the data produced by the simulation are however not accurate. Overall the model produced during this master’s thesis seems to be a good step forward on the path to producing a useful model. Some suggestions for the next steps in improving the model are provided.

Du, Preez Devon. "The incidence and mechanism of injuries occurring at a South African National Judo Championship." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1011666.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the current study was to identify and describe the incidence and mechanism of injuries that occurred to judoka at a South African national tournament. Therefore the objectives of the study were to determine the following: To describe and compare the type and incidence of injuries occurring at a South African national championship in respect of three different age groups as well as gender; To describe and compare the types of mechanisms occurring at a South African national championship in respect of three different age groups as well as gender; To describe and determine the treatment methods used by judoka at a South African national championship. To determine and describe the training methods of judoka and the potential impact on incidence of injuries at the relevant national judo championship. To achieve the aims and objectives set out in the present study, the literature regarding injury incidence and mechanisms causing those injuries were reviewed along with other martial arts, in order for comparisons to be made within judo and other martial arts. To evaluate and describe injury in judo an exploratory-descriptive epidemiological approach was used in order to gather relevant data. The use of detailed questionnaires was used to capture information regarding physical preparation for the tournament along with a screening questionnaire that captured important data relating to injuries prior to competing in the South African national tournament. In order for the main aim of the study to be achieved an injury questionnaire was presented to all injured judoka who partook in the study at the tournament. This questionnaire captured critical information regarding the occurring injury and the mechanism responsible for the injury. Judoka sampled consisted of 141 judoka of which 110 were males and 31 were females. This sample size of judoka consisted of three age groups with each group representing a different age range. This allowed for the observation of more injuries but also allowed one to compare injuries obtained by younger judoka to that of older judoka. For the purposes of this study groups 4 (ages 14 to 16), 5 (ages 17 to 19) and 6 (ages 20 and older) were used. The reason for selecting these three age groups was due to the fact that they would be participating under international regulations with strangulations and armlocks allowed for in a fight. Group 4 consisted of 49 judoka; the smallest group studied was that of group 5 and consisted of 28 judoka with group 6 being the largest sampled group with 64 judoka. Of the 141 sampled judoka 103 injuries were recorded with males obtaining more injuries than that of female judoka. The results from the study were placed into table and graph formats and described via descriptive statistics. In order to explain the variation within groups inferential statistics as well as Cohen‟s d were utilised to determine both statistical and practical significances between the different age groups. When describing statistics via the use of frequency distribution tables, statistical significance was tested via Chi2 tests of independence, Cramér‟s V was utilized to determine practical significance. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done to determine intra-group differences with the F statistic reported for significant findings as it reports the variance of group means. The present study found that male judoka within their respective age groups competed in judo for a longer duration than that of females, that the older the judoka was the greater the likelihood that the judoka would have competed for a longer duration of time at a provincial level of judo with group 5 and 6 having competed on a provincial level longer than that of group 4 judoka. Over a 12 month period judoka sustained almost four minor injuries and less than one major injury on average. Females on average were found to have sustained more minor injuries over a period of a year than that of males. The results indicate that only 37.9 percent of judoka compete with existing injuries with more males (40.0 percent) participating with an existing injury compared to that of females at 31.5 percent. The time spent training the various judo components was similar across all three age groups with a statistically significant differences (F (1,81) =4.216, p=.043) found between the genders of group 4 males and females with males practicing more ne-waza a week. On average time spent doing gym work was 177.39 minutes a month with males training for a longer duration 192.69 minutes a month than that of females. Group 5 judoka spent the greatest time in a month doing gym training at 201.35 minutes a month. A gender difference was noted in upper body strength training (F (1,81) = 4.12, p =.046). Males favoured upper body strength training compared to that of females. A total of 103 (73.0 percent) of the sample group were injured once or more. Group 4 judoka (age 16 to 17) had the highest injury incidence for incurring a injury at least once at 75.5 percent. The injury incidence for groups 5 (age 18 to 19) and 6 (age 20 + years) for incurring at least one injury was 71.4 percent and 50.0 percent respectively. The results indicate that 72.7 percent of males reported at least one injury compared to 74.2 percent of females. The present study found that the head and neck (42.7 percent) followed by the upper body (34.0 percent) to be the anatomical regions with the highest incidence of injury. The upper body anatomical site most frequently injured as expected was the shoulder joint at 11.7 percent with the knee, the lower body site with the greatest incidence of injury. Cuts (38.8 percent) accounted for the largest proportion of injuries with the most occurring injury to males being that of a cut (45.6 percent) and sprains (37.5 percent) for females. A statistically significant difference was found between the two genders in relation to the types of occurring injuries, with a moderate practical significance noticed (Chi2 (4) = 12.33, p = .015, V = 0.35). The major mechanisms of injury to the judoka was throwing / being thrown (35.5 percent) and impacts / collisions with other judoka (33.9 percent). These mechanisms of injury were also identified as the major mechanisms leading to injury in both genders. A total of 17.7 percent of fights were terminated due to injury with fewer males (14.5 percent) having fights terminated due to a serious injury compared to that of females (29.0 percent). A statistically significant difference was found between the two genders in relation to the termination of fights due to injuries with a small practical significance noticed with (Chi2(1) = 7.93, p = .005, V = 0.19). The most identified treatment at the tournament for judo was that of icing the injured area. Male judoka indicated 36.4 percent of injuries were treated with ice with females treating 36.0 percent of their injuries with ice. Males indicated that the return to the sport after becoming injured was less (0.75 weeks) than that of females (1.71 weeks) and a statistically significant difference was found between the genders and recovering from injury (F (1,81) = 4.22, p = .043, d = 0.41).

Abstract:
This research seeks to recognize the World Formula One Championship as a global industrial sports complex through both its direct and indirect connections with North America. The study analyses the visibly linked and imperceptible separate commercial, cultural, political, and technological inputs from data retrieved from several accepted disciplines that can be prejudiced based on the sport’s respective nationalism. The study examines the entangled but corresponding economic and social engines that constitute the global framework of the World Formula One Championship. It does this by examining those commercial, cultural, political, and technological dimensions that form this autonomous industrial sports complex. This thesis presents research that scrutinizes how the World Formula One Championship cannot be understood as strictly a European enterprise and discovers intricate global relationships, particularly North American contributions, which are often disregarded, despite its historical existence on the continent and the more recent presence of the sport in the United States. These connections include a vast array of shared relationships that reveals how the World Formula One Championship is a globalized and evolving industrial sports complex of its own significance. Competition from other major league sports, lack of media coverage, and a small, isolated audience has caused the World Formula One Championship to be misunderstood in much of North America. The verified associations that materialize in this study demonstrate its importance and influence as an all-encompassing business and worldwide sport, in fact, one of three Mega Sports.

Abstract:
This essay analyses the impact of the UEFA European Championship in 2012 on the regional inflow of tourists in Poland. In this essay we use a difference-in-differences method to compare the regions who hosted the event with the regions who did not host the event. Our results show that there is a statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the arrival of foreign tourists. The results show that the regions who hosted the event experienced a significant increase in the inflow of tourists and that was related to the tournament. The arrival of foreign tourists increased during the month of June 2012, when the event took place and in the months after. The conclusion we draw from this essay is that the UEFA European Championship had a positive impact both in the short and long run in the inflow of tourists in the regions who hosted the 2012 tournament in Poland.

Abstract:
Successful presentation of a country as a brand and positioning its unique image on the global level can give significant opportunities for development and progress of the state in the different areas. This research applies theories on the country branding to estimate impact of mega sport events on the image of state. To accomplish these goal I used case study – formation of brand Ukraine before hosting European Football Championship 2012 (EURO 2012). To investigate brand strategy of Ukraine and analyze implemented projects I conducted in-depth interviews with government officials and independent experts, who are involved in promo campaigns of Ukraine. The research concluded that Ukraine is in the process of brand formation, but it is too early to to assume the existance of the comprehensive brand of the country. For Ukraine, EURO 2012 impulses change of negative perceptions of the country and is a step towards complex strategy of brand creation. Future of this strategy therefore depends on conducting preliminary studies of each promo project and coordinated collaboration between all actors who take part in creation of brand Ukraine. Research also provides recommendations on how to make brand campaign more efficient.

Previous research has shown a difference on the athletes’ portrayal based on gendered language use on television broadcasting of sporting events. A content analysis on the 2018 Tennis US Open Championship Weekend for both men’s and women’s tennis matches explains the structure of the broadcasting commentating done by the network that has the rights to this tournament. The study looks at different categories of the content of the comments and the descriptors that are used to refer to both female and male athletes. Framing and priming theories were the theoretical frameworks for this study. Findings revealed no significant change was observed with athletic skill and strategy-based comments for either gender. The findings also showed that descriptors related to emotionality were more common in the commentary with women.

Hodges, Kara. "Equal Play, Equal Pay: Title IX Effects on Salary Gap at Division I Football Bowl Series and Football Championship Series Universities." TopSCHOLAR®, 2019. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/3131.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impacts of Title IX compliance on salary gap of Division I Football Bowl Series and Football Championship Series universities male and female associate professors. Title IX athletic proportionality requirements have been established since the 1980’s and require that each university have an equal percentage of female student athletes as they do female undergraduates. This study uses the National Center for Education Statistics database, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System to calculate salary gap between male and female associate professors and uses the Office of Civil Rights Equity in Athletics Database to calculate Title IX compliance. In this study paired t-tests and OLS regression are used to find the relationship between the salary gap and compliance of Title IX. This study found an inverse relationship between salary gap and Title IX compliance, refuting the hypothesis. Because Title IX compliance requires an equal proportion of student to athletes, the universities with significantly more female undergraduates were less likely to be Title IX compliant.

Cavaggioni, L. "FROM THE ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP TO THE PARALYMPIC PODIUM: ELABORATION OF A NOVEL APPROACH OF DRY-LAND TRAINING IN ÉLITE SWIMMERS WITH DISABILITY." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/257338.

Full text
Abstract:
The present Ph D. thesis describes the longitudinal evolution of the physical, postural and functional parameters of three top-level Paralympic swimmers (classes S9-SB8-SM9, S7-SB6-SM7, S5-SB4-SM5) during two years of training promoting a novel approach of “dry land” training based on quality of movement. It is divided into three sections. PART I: in according to available literature, it is described the importance to shift the focus from a movement expressed in quantity (the parameters evaluated are basically related on the athlete’s fitness level) to a movement quality which means a more economic, efficient, biomechanically correct motion and their related assessments procedures. The foundations of human movement patterns are posture and breathing. PART II: two studies, based on aspects that have been an important part to the Paralympic swimmer’s training method, are exposed. The aim of the first research was to evaluate the difference between traditional core training and the abdominal training corrected by diaphragmatic breathing pattern on abdominal fitness, quality of movement and pulmonary function during 4 weeks of training, in two groups (N=32; 29±3 years): the Experimental Group performed abdominal exercises characterized on muscular chain stretching accompanied by a diaphragmatic breathing pattern with vocal sound emission, conversely Traditional Group performed traditional core exercises like crunches or isometric planks. The purpose of the second study is to show a different modality of strength training without external devices which effects are similar to those obtained with Blood Flow Restriction Resistance Training. This method is characterized by the modulation of muscle action velocity using moderate intensities (low loads) and slow speed without pause between repetitions nor between phases. PART III: The aim is to show the longitudinal evolution three èlite Paralympic swimmers during two years of training. Methods: related to their disability each subject underwent a specific dry-land training comprising a diaphragmatic breathing technique, aimed to improve their body alignment, mobility and trunk stabilization, as well as a slow-velocity resistance training aimed to improve their muscle strength. They were tested for functional movement by using FMSTM tests, a morphological analysis to describe their body posture, a MARM evaluation for the breathing patterns and the strength measured by vertical jump test with the infrared device Optojump. All data were collected over two years, from the Paralympic games in London in August 2012 to the IPC European Championship in Eindhoven in August 2014. Results: all swimmers improved both the single and the composite scores of the FMSTM assessment, indicating the achievement of a better postural control. They ameliorate their body alignment reaching a better balance between thoracic and diaphragmatic breathing pattern. The male athlete, also increased his strength parameters showing a +14% from December 2012 to August 2013 and an additional 2.6% from August 2013 to August 2014. All athletes won medals (silver and bronze ones) in the major international competitions, especially the male athlete won two bronze medals in London 2012, ended up five gold medals in Eindhoven 2014. Conclusion: These results show that a two-year specific dry-land training comprising body balance, breathing, and slow-velocity resistance training is capable of enhancing the functional, postural and strength performance of three top-level Paralympic swimmers. We conclude that such a gentle approach of training contributed to improved performance in world-class competitions, thus enabling them to reach consistently the highest step of the podium.

We aim to develop knowledge of how new technology, in this case social media, can contribute to how sports fans interact with their idols. Therefore our framing of a question is to present how fans experience their contact with mixed martial arts (MMA) & ultimate fighting championship (UFC) through social media platforms. To specify our study, we also have a supplement question with in which way sports fans uses social media. We have chosen to conduct a qualitative study consisting of interviews and data observations of websites, related to the organization UFC, to approach our main question. We have interviewed nine randomly selected people with one common interest - MMA/UFC. With an implant of theories, consisting of social media, fandom and lurking, on the result of the interview and website data, we try to come closer to a conclusion for our intention with this thesis. Our conclusion is that the interviewed fans express that through the usage of social media, they feel like they have come closer to UFC. They have developed a deeper knowledge about the sport, the members and other fans that shares the same interest. Most of our respondents have a lurking attitude towards the social media usage, which means that they are more like observers and soak in the information and media material. They are active in the searching of material related to UFC, but they are not active in the way of contributing with comments, discussions or material.

Abstract:
The technical-tactical factor has proved a determinant dynamic to win in combat sports. The representative knowledge on this subject is presented as an asset to optimize training and fighters’ performance. However, studies in hybrid full contact combat sports are limited. Thus, the main purpose of this investigation was to analyses the technical-tactical performance of global top-ranked fighters in the World Ultimate Full Contact Championships held annually in Portugal between 2008 and 2017. For integral understanding of the phenomenon, the following holistic approach was used: (i) reviewing the available literature; ii) reporting the theoretical basis of technical-tactical behavior and its application in ultimate full contact training; (iii) investigating ultimate full contact offensive efficiency analyzed through styles and combat distances; (iv) investigating anticipated, simultaneous and posterior counterattack efficiency in ultimate full contact; (v) investigating ultimate full contact defensive efficiency and ground fighting control, interrelating the different technical-tactical skills; and (vi) characterizing ultimate full contact fight outcomes in terms of methods, occurrence times and technical-tactical developments. The main conclusion was: (i) the technical-tactical performance requires ultimate full contact fighters to be efficient in all gestural and behavioural dynamics, supported by cognitive and dynamic-ecological approaches; (ii) it is not enough to be efficient only in ground fighting or only in stand-up fighting, or to be efficient offensively without being efficient defensively or counter-offensively, iii) and to act spontaneously to contextual opportunities without rationally opting for biomechanically correct action, properly adjusted to opportunities and at the right time; (iv) there are multiple interrelated variables of performance which must be developed in an all-inclusive and balanced way for the best performance in combat—i.e., styles and skills versatility and automation, contextual adaptability and seizing opportunity (distances and opponent stimulus), unpredictability, anticipation, combinations, fighting control, decision-making and perception, associated with volitional capacity and adjusted physiological intensities.

To let the coach and players in the future have a reference by knowing the stunt patterns and the key to win. This study was to record integration data by video systematic observation method and carry on the quantitative data analysis with the data above. To do the comprehensive description regard to the times, maximum amount of groups and failure rate of stunt done by ten teams. Summarized all the results and concluded as below: 1. Would get more points if doing partner stunt instead of group stunt and also have different grades when partner stunt be done by single or double arm. Project of stunt is the key to win due to its proportion of points which accounts for 25% of all. 2. Frequency of basketball toss is not the factor to get point since there can only have 6 groups doing the basketball toss at once in the rules. So the critical factors to win are the synchronization, completeness, height and action of basketball toss. 3.According to the statistics of pyramid, the most important are the amount of groups and completeness. However this project has the highest rate of failure. The reason why team Chinese Taipei got the champion this time was exactly with their rare fails and most pyramid be done. 4. The key to get point of tumbling refer to the statistics of ten teams are the, frequency and amount of group. Keyword: cheerleading, stunt, pyramid, basketball toss, tumbling. 碩士
臺北巿立體育學院
運動科學研究所
92
It is no doubt that media plays a key role in promoting sport activity. Sometimes, media even goes to the font line and organizes sport activity itself. Put aside the fact that media being the organizer generally helps to increase the media exposure of the promoted sport activity. There is suspect that media organizer might inappropriately intervene and manipulate the sport activity, and as a result to introduce unpredictable factors into it. The purpose of this study is to examine whether it is appropriate for media to be the organizer of a sport activity. China Daily News in the past forty years has been the organizer of “Chuan-Hwa Cup Baseball Championship”. This study attempts to explore the effect of “media organizer” by examining the motive of China Daily New in organizing this sport activity. The study adopts a qualitative research method which includes both in-depth interviews and research paper reviews. The case can provide us a vague picture of the effect of “media organizer” on sport activity. This study found that media as a sport activity organizer does help to increase media exposure and public awareness of the activity due to media’s positive social image and good public relation. However, as environment changed along the time, the effect seems to be lessening gradually. Conclusion made from this study is that media organizer of sport activity can have positive effect on the activity. However, the attitude of organizer is critical to the success. If organizer’s goal is to leverage and share resources to maximize the promotion effect of the activity, it surely can have positive contribution to the sport activity.

The participants placed great emphasis on the hosting of the 38th Yungshin Cup Volleyball Championships, especially the quality of the referees as well as the provision of drinking water at the periphery of the volleyball courts. 2. Participant satisfaction for competition content planning and actual experiences for the 38th Yungshin Cup Volleyball Championships were generally low. Accommodation quality and reward image had the lowest scores amongst the competition content planning and participant services rendered. 3. The participant recommendations from the 38th Yungshin Cup Volleyball Championships for competition content planning for future Yungshin Cup Volleyball Championships commonly chose competition content planning different from what was currently provided. Many exhibited high acceptance for user items manufactured by Yung Shin Pharmaceutical Industry Company. Investigation results showed that participants placed great importance on every detail of the volleyball competition. However, the current Yungshin Cup Volleyball Championships failed to provide participating athletes with quality service, leading to low participant satisfaction. The relationship between the volleyball competit ion and participating athletes is similar to that between corporations and consumers. Good service quality must be provided in order to raise participant satisfaction for the competition. This would help obtain the required support to popularize the sport of volleyball.

McGarry, James T. "The development of a stochastic model for predicting championship squash performance." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1799.

Full text
Abstract:
Sport analysis provides objective data regarding individual or team performance in the widespread belief that the information available is applicable to a future setting. Recent matches, often against different opponents, of two competitors scheduled to meet next are frequently analyzed in some form for a priori match information. An underlying assumption is that consistency in athletic performance exists, to the extent that these analyses duly inform the coaching process in preparation for the forthcoming contest. The hypothesis of this study was that an elite player's match “profile" characterizes individual playing habits in squash and can be used to accurately predict future sport performance. The data comprised the quarter-finals through final of the men's Canadian Open Championship, 1988.The hypothesis was tested through the development and application of a stochastic Markov model for predicting future competition squash match play from past performance. The results, using two way chi-square analysis, revealed consistency in individual athletic behavior between games (and also between matches) against the same opponent (p>.25), but not between matches against different opponents (p<.25). It seems that a player's profile is dependent on the particular interaction between two individuals, and that this pattern irreproducible within this interaction. Importantly, however, the interaction is unique to the two players and not generalizable to other opponents. This suggests that additional information from the opponent is required if the model is to successfully predict future sport performance. The present model possesses no predictive validity beyond the scope of its previous observation(s), a restriction which unfortunately consigns the past to forever repeat itself. The application of the model for the identification of future optimal strategy has therefore little present utility. The attempt to model competitive sport performance is nonetheless a worthy pursuit, not least because it directs attention to the critical aspects of data which determine sport success. Further research is recommended to investigate whether an underlying order which characterizes player performance can be established. If no such individual signature can be identified in sport, the utility of commonly applying tactical strategy from previous observation(s) against different opponents must be questioned.

It not only has the effect of entertaining the global population, but also brings enormous economic benefits behind it. Because the NBA games combine the elements of entertainment and business as an activity, therefore, the birth of sports lottery was born to satisfy the world's freshness and sense of hunger in gambling. In addition, it has kinds of game to play, like betting predictions for single-game wins, or other special bets like forecasting the most valuable player(MVP), divisional championship or the subject of this study - forecasting the final championship. This study will use Neural Network to build a practice model by calculating the data of regular season and playoffs from 2009-17. Then we use the data of regular season and playoffs from 2018 to validate the accuracy. At last, the model will be used to predict the final championship of 2019. Moreover, the final predicted result of the study will also be supplemented by decision trees for ensuring the accuracy. However, the final predicted results need to be verified with the officially announced results to prove whether this study is accurate or not.

Conclusion: The percentage of Kento Momota's backcourt hitting skills. From the results of the previous chapter, can easily to be found that he uses drop shots and smashes more. For example, there are 85 smashes (37.1%) of 229 hittings in total, then the second option he chose is straight drop shots(53 shots 23.1%).And also there are 201 shots in his left backcourt, he played straight smash for 28 shots (13.9%) and straight drop shot for 96 shots (47.8%). Because Kento Momota wouldn’t play too many high clear shots in the backcourt, he is really a typical attacked player in the backcourt.

Abstract:
Network analysis in football allows understanding, by means of passing, individual performance of a player and by summing all interactions between players understanding the team’s collective behavior. The present study aims to explore in which way passing networks can influence success in an elite European competition such as the UEFA´s EURO 2016.The sample included all 51 matches from the Euro 2016. Information´s from games of the tournament were available online. The variables were taken from those files and then analyzed included phase of the competition, opponent, outcome of the match, players who participated in the match, passing percentage, short, medium and long passes attempted, failed and completed and minutes played. Afterwards a passing network approach was computed to identify the player´s contribution to enhance the team´s chances of success. Results suggest that teams who have players who present higher scores in, minutes played, percentage of medium-distance passes completed, In Degree, Out Degree and Closeness gave their teams a bigger chance of being successful in the tournament. The social network metrics present in this study represent a way of teams to analyze their own performance

The data analysis and descriptive statistics of execution quantities will be conducted by studying the relation of variables regarding the execution quantity, bobble and fall of each stunt that the top 3 teams (including the US, Chinese Taipei and Finland) performed. Next, relation among the fall, bobble and results will also be studied by Pearson correlation and regression analysis. It's discovered that in terms of the 4 technical components, including tumbling, basket tosses, partner stunts and pyramids, the more quantity the teams executed, the higher point they got. Moreover, the quantities of tumbling and partner stunts are not only crucial to points, but also the results.

Abstract:
This study aimed to identify the game statistics that best discriminate the outcome of the matches played in the Football European Championship (France, 2016). The analysis was carried on all matches of the competition and all the variables available on the official UEFA website. A two-step cluster analysis was performed to identify different clusters amongst the game statistics. Afterwards, a discriminant analysis identified the most powerful variables in distinguishing the previously identified clusters. Results revealed that Distance Covered in the first half (Structure coefficient SC=0.742) and the Fouls Committed in the second half (SC=0.367) were the variables that most contributed to distinguish the clusters, suggesting the importance of defensive combativeness and physical conditioning. This type of analysis is important because the variables provide a lot of information about the teams, such as their tactical model or playing styles, which gives the coaches/analysts an increased knowledge about football's performance indicators.

Through qualitative study of in-depth interview, the information about the learning experiences, the hardship of the players face in their training process and how they overcome the hardships and succeed in the end were analyzed. The major findings were as follows: 1. Learning experiences and history Most players came into contact with tennis through their family or relatives. Four players involved in the sports of tennis due to enthusiasms from their parents and families. Family played an important role in the early learning process, as well as a supporting role for the players. Players started playing the sport around 5 to 8 years old. It is better to start early in training. 2. Success and hardships during training process Professional players often faced shortage of funds and coaching experiences, due to this, many of the players have to train by themselves. Furthermore, because Taiwan does not hold many international tournaments, players often have to attend tournaments in other countries, resulting in huge expenses on the players themselves. Players improved their skills, experiences and physical conditions with their years of training. 3. Psychological and physical control before the games Professional players often arrived early to the competition sites to overcome and adapt to the weather in different countries, this also allowed the players to observe the styles and strategies of their opponents and further prepare themselves for the games. Professional players also learned to make the necessary adjustments for the games as required. 4. Psychological adjustments during the games All players believed in keeping emotional stability under any conditions. As any one point or any one game is vital. All players learned to turn negatives into positives and never underestimated opponents in any circumstances to avoid the unnecessary outcome.

The competition records are divided into five major categories. Data from the competitions are analyzed by one-way ANOVA. (Including two-point shooting, two-point midfielder, three-point shooting, three-pointers midfielder, free throw shooting and free throw shooting), scoring skills (including two-point shooting, three-point shooting, free throw shooting and assists) Scoring techniques (including offensive rebounds, mistakes, fouls and blocked), defensive techniques (including defensive rebounds, interceptions, and blockages) and scoring were compared exergywise with Schaeffer for a significant level of α <.05. The results show that the performance of a shooting relative to the outcome of the match; two shots of North Korea is far lower than the number of other countries; two basket in the basket women's basketball game relies heavily on scoring. Second, the scoring technique has a relative relationship between the outcome of the match; two hit percentage is an important indicator of the game; assists in the game is an effective score passing ability index. Third, the defensive game has a relative relationship between the outcome of the game; offensive rebounds attack team can get another chance to attack. Fourth, non-scoring technology on the relationship between the outcome of the race has no effect. Fifth, gains and losses on the outcome of the match has a relative relationship; score is the outcome of the game to determine the outcome of the index; loss is the team in the defensive intensity of the relative ability to view the index, the higher the score the less the lower the score is the most able to win the game.

The overall score of the men's team is 337. The maximum number of physical skills is 121.91(%), followed by the handcraft 95 times 28.19(%), followed by the technique of 88 times. 26.11(%), waist technique 33 times 9.79(%); men's overall scoring technical movements are the highest in the technique of footwork, the magnitude of each level is different, the weight is different, and the scoring technique selected by the competition is different. To. The total number of fouls for men was (Tanbekh) 103 times as the highest 73.05%, followed by (Dakki) 33 times for the overall 23.40%, followed by (Girrom) 5 times for the overall 3.55%; showing that the players are less aggressive in the attack, The pace of the game is also slow, so the referee will find that there is no positive attack intention and evasion attack. The trial will be given to Tanbekh in 20~25 seconds according to the rules, but the research also shows that once the player is sentenced to Tanbekh, the number of attacks will increase. The second foul Dakki was sharply reduced, and it also showed that the players were mostly in passive mode. It is recommended to strengthen the left and right anti-drop action of the players in the usual training; the connection technology strengthens the training and application, and the comprehensive physical energy increases, strengthens the special muscle strength training, and increases the diversification of the player's movements. In addition, during the training, the coach can strengthen the concept of tactical application, and through the multimedia information platform to guide the players to understand the current foreign players' competition mode and tactical application, thereby improving the technical level of the domestic grassroots kurash.
