Abstract:
Purpose: to determine the features of competitive activity at the 2023 continental championships in Greco-Roman wrestling. Material and methods. The analysis of scientific and methodical literature, the analysis of protocols and video recordings of competitive activities was used to solve the research tasks; expert assessment; methods of mathematical statistics. 105 matches at the 2023 continental championships were analyzed: Asian Championship (n=30 matches), European Championship (n=30 matches), Pan American Championship (n=24 matches), African Championship (n=21 matches). A total of 210 wrestlers (winners and losers), participants in the final fights (fighting for first and third places) took part in the study. In competitive activity, the following indicators were evaluated: the duration of fights (time of the fight); all technical and tactical actions carried out by wrestlers in fights (number of times); the number of non-standard situations in the rack and parterre (passives, violations of the rules, challenges); effectiveness of the applied technique in the rack and parterre (assessed in points: 1 point, 2 points, 4 points, 5 points). Results: the analysis of the fights made it possible to establish that at most continental championships, athletes performed more technical and tactical actions (TTD) in the rack than in the floor: European Championship (rack – 57,7 %; floor – 42,3 %); Asian Championship (stand – 59,8 %; floor – 40,2 %); African Championship (stand – 52,5%; floor – 47,5 %). At the Pan American Championship, athletes spent more TTD in the floor than in the rack (rack – 31,8 %; floor – 68,2 %). The highest average number of non-standard situations per scrimmage is observed at the European Championship (1,83 non-standard situation per scrimmage), then at the Asian Championship (1.80 non-standard situation per scrimmage), then at the Pan American Championship (0,92 non-standard situation per scrimmage) and African Championship (0,76 non-standard situation per scrum). The highest average performance in a scrimmage is observed at the Asian Championship (7,40 points per scrimmage), then at the European Championship (6,83 points), then at the African Championship (4,76 points) and at the Pan American Championship (4,50 points). Conclusions. An analysis of competitive activity at the 2023 continental championships in Greco-Roman wrestling was conducted. The results of the study indicate the peculiarities of each championship: a different ratio of technical and tactical actions in the racks and parterre; the difference in the average number of non-standard situations and performance in fights. The obtained results will make it possible to provide recommendations on changing the rules of competitions and increasing the spectacle of Greco-Roman wrestling.

"The New Generation of Professional Soccer Talent Is Born under the Bias of the RAE: Relative Age Effect in International Male Youth Soccer Championships." Children 8, no. 12 (2021): 1117. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/children8121117.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2019, numerous championships of youth categories soccer national teams were held. In the present study, we analyzed the existence of the Relative Age Effect (RAE) in four major male championships that, due to their importance and participating teams, most likely brought together the great bulk of the players who will dominate professional soccer in the next decade. Participants were professional and amateur youth male soccer players who participated in the last international championships: UEFA European Under-21 Championship (2017–2019); UEFA European Under-19 Championship (2019); South American Youth Football Championship (also known as Conmebol U-20) (2019); and FIFA U-20 World Cup (2019), with 823 players (20.25 ± 0.84 years). In the four championships analyzed, the existence of RAE was found for all players (p < 0.001). Analyzing the players when considering their position on the pitch and their championship, RAE was found, statistically significant, in 10 of the 16 classifications. New generations of elite soccer players arrive with a clear bias in the selection of talent; an unfair bias, based on unequal opportunities in early categories, which should be reviewed by sports authorities.

Madarame, Haruhiko. "Basketball Game-Related Statistics that Discriminate among Continental Championships for Under-18 Women." Sports 6, no. 4 (2018): 114. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/sports6040114.

Full text
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were (a) to evaluate differences in basketball game-related statistics among continental championships for under-18 (U18) women, and (b) to identify game-related statistics that discriminate among the continents. The analysis was performed on all matches (n = 136) in the four continental championships (Africa, America, Asia, Europe) of 2016. Differences in game-related statistics among the continents were analyzed by an analysis of variance (ANOVA) with effect size statistics. Game-related statistics that discriminate among the continents were assessed by discriminant analysis. The ANOVA yielded significant F-values for 13 of 16 variables and large effect size differences for 10 of 16 variables. The discriminant analysis yielded three significant functions. The Asian championship was discriminated from the other continental championships by ball possessions, defensive rebounds, assists, and fouls. The African championship was discriminated from the European championship by ball possessions, successful 3-point field goals, unsuccessful free throws, and turnovers, and from the American championship by ball possessions, unsuccessful 2-point field goals, successful 3-point field goals, successful free throws, and assists. The results of this study suggest that U18 women’s basketball games are played differently in each continent.

Abstract:
The aims of this study were to compare marathon pacing profiles between major championships winning races and world record (WR) races in men’s and women’s long-distance runners. Percentages of mean race speeds (%RS) for each 5 km section and last 2,195 m were compared between the latest 12 men’s and 8 women’s marathon WRs and most recent 14 men’s and 14 women’s performances leading to either World Championship or Olympic Games (championships) gold medals, and between sexes in championships, through analysis of variance. Additionally, coefficient of variation in pace (%CV) was compared through independent samples t-tests. %RS during the first 5 km was greater in WRs than championships in men (p = 0.010, d = 1.07), with a subsequent even pacing profile. More negative pacing profiles were adopted in championships than WRs in men (p < 0.001, d = 2.07). Women’s WR and championship performances were characterized by even and negative pacing profiles, with different %CV (p < 0.001, d = 1.89). Whereas marathon WRs are characterized by fast, even and sustained paces, slower paces and more negative pacing approaches with fast endspurts are adopted during winning major championship performances. These fast endspurts are specially used by women in championships.behavior, competition, endurance, running, tactics

Abstract:
The aims of this study were (i) to compare basketball game-related statistics in women by region (Africa, America, Asia, Europe), and (ii) to identify characteristics that discriminate performances for each region. A total of 134 games from each continental championship held in 2017 were analyzed. A one-way ANOVA followed by a Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparison was performed to evaluate differences in each variable between the continents. A discriminant analysis was performed to identify game-related statistics that discriminate among the continents. The Asian and European championships overall showed similar performance profiles: Low numbers of possessions and turnovers, and high numbers of successful field goals and assists. However, the European championship was more closely contested than the Asian championship. The African championship was characterized by high numbers of possessions, free throws, and turnovers. The homogeneity of the American championship was low, and some of the cases have similarities with the African championship, whereas other cases have similarities with the European championship. On average, the American championship was characterized by low numbers of successful field goals and assists, and high numbers of steals and turnovers. It is suggested that women’s basketball games are played in a different manner in each region of the world.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: We aimed to describe hamstring muscle injury (HMI) history and hamstring specific training (HST) in elite athletes. A secondary aim was to analyse the potential factors associated with in-championships HMI. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study to collect data before and during the 2018 European Athletics Championships. Injury and illness complaints during the month before the championship, HMI history during the entire career and the 2017–18 season, HST (strengthening, stretching, core stability, sprinting), and in-championship HMI were recorded. We calculated proportions of athletes with HMI history, we compared HST according to sex and disciplines with Chi2 tests or ANOVA, and analysed factors associated with in-championship HMI using simple model logistic regression. Results: Among the 357 included athletes, 48% reported at least one HMI during their career and 24% during the 2017–18 season. Of this latter group, 30.6% reported reduced or no participation in athletics’ training or competition at the start of the championship due to the hamstring injury. For HST, higher volumes of hamstring stretching and sprinting were reported for disciplines requiring higher running velocities (i.e., sprints, hurdles, jumps, combined events and middle distances). Five in-championship HMIs were recorded. The simple model analysis showed a lower risk of sustaining an in-championships HMI for athletes who performed more core (lumbo-pelvic) stability training (OR = 0.49 (95% CI: 0.25 to 0.89), p = 0.021). Conclusions: Our present study reports that HMI is a characteristic of the athletics athletes’ career, especially in disciplines involving sprinting. In these disciplines, athletes were performing higher volumes of hamstring stretching and sprinting than in other disciplines. Further studies should be conducted to better understand if and how HST are protective approaches for HMI in order to improve HMI risk reduction strategies.

Abstract:
Elite athlete self-concepts contributed to championship performances in two international swimming championships beyond that which could be explained by previous personal best (PPB) performances for 257 of the world’s top swimmers from 30 countries. Responses to the Elite Swimmer Self-Description Questionnaire (ESSDQ) completed at the start of each championship (prior to competition) were psychometrically strong and resulted in a well-defined factor structure. Whereas championship performance was highly related to PPB performance (r = .90), structural equation models demonstrated that elite athlete self-concept also contributed significantly to the prediction of subsequent championship performance, explaining approximately 10% of the residual variance after controlling for PPB. For swimmers who competed in two events, results based on the first event were replicated in the second. The results have important theoretical, substantive, and practical implications for mentors and educators.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the study was to determine whether experience related to horse age and number of starts in championships influences stress level, measured by salivary cortisol concentration. The study involved 18 clinically healthy Hucul mares who participated in the Polish Championships for Hucul Horses. Evaluation of performance value was carried out in accordance with the guidelines specified in the breeding and genetic resources conservation program for this breed. The championship lasted two days, consisting of conformation evaluation, endurance, and Hucul path. Saliva was collected at baseline (T1), after arena assessment (T2), after endurance (T3), and on the second day after the Hucul path (T4). Cortisol levels increased from an average of 2.73 ± 1.18 ng/mL (T1) to 10.46 ± 8.03 ng/mL after T3. Significantly lower levels of free cortisol were detected in the saliva of the younger mares, up to 9 years old, and mares who participated in only one qualifying path after each element of the championship. The highest levels of cortisol (T3) were found in mares competing repeatedly on the qualifying path. No correlation was found between cortisol levels and the championship results. Participation of mares in the championship was associated with stress, which was reflected in the increase in cortisol levels in saliva.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to identify whether ranking position predicts combat result in Senior and Junior male and female Spanish judo athletes, and how it influences the different stages of the championship. The sample was composed of 683 combats from the Senior (male = 164; female = 158 combats) and Junior (male = 193; female = 168 combats) Spain 2014 Judo National Championships, including all weight categories. Data were obtained from the official classification published by the Spanish Judo Federation. Main results revealed important advantages of high-ranked athletes, finding differences between sexes and championship stages. Specifically, high-ranked athletes had more probability of winning and passing to the next stage. This advantage appears to be greater at the initial phases in females but mitigated as the championship progresses. Interestingly, the quarterfinal appears to be a critical phase in which better skilled and prepared athletes are likely to win. Greater differences between better and lower-ranked were found in Junior females, especially at eliminatory and quarterfinals stages. On the contrary, the Junior male contest appears to be the most equitable competition. These results fuel the debate about the seeding process in judo championships.

Abstract:
In amateur sports branches, one of the most important and big sports organizations for both athletes, coaches, and also for the countries is the Olympic Games and the other is the World Championships. The Olympic Games, which could not be held in 2020 but postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic in the world, and the 2021 World Wrestling Championship, which is included in the 2021 activity program of the United World Wrestling (UWW), were held in the same year with very short intervals. However, 72% of the wrestlers who participated in the Olympic Games either could not participate in the World Championship or were replaced with another athlete from the same country. In this study, some competition components and score analyses of the Men's Free Wrestling Competitions held in these two major sports organizations on the basis of Olympic weights were made and their similarities and differences were revealed. While 96 athletes participated in the Olympic Games Men's Freestyle Wrestling competitions in six Olympic weight categories and performed 114 competitions, in the World Championship Men's Freestyle Wrestling, 144 athletes performed 162 competitions in the aforementioned six Olympic weight categories. Average points per competition were 9.18 points at the Olympic Games and 9.62 points at the World Championships. In both championships, the highest number of wins was by points, and their rates were 69% in the Olympic Games, and 61% in the World Championships. In both championships, the finishing times of the competitions were recorded as the highest value in completing the normal time, and their rates were determined as 72% in the Olympic Games and 61% in the World Championships. The average times per competition were determined as 5 minutes 23 seconds in the Olympic Games and 4 minutes and 49 seconds in the World Championships. The frequency of technical points earned was determined as the highest frequency of 2 points in both championships and the average frequency of 2 points per match was 3.32 in the Olympic Games, while it was 3.39 in the World Championships. With these results, no statistically significant difference was observed in terms of the competition components analysed in the Olympic Games and World Championships (p>0.05). Studying the history of sports and knowing their achievements is of great importance as it is considered a means of advancement for societies and a measure of their culture and stages of development in all fields. One of the important sports games at the international and local levels is volleyball, which has a long history at the global level. The importance of the research lies in knowing the teams participating in the Asian championships and their most important results and where they were held from the first Asian Championship for men's teams in (1975) until the last championship held in Japan in (2021). Through the teams' participation in the Asian Men's Volleyball Championships, many teams have emerged on the Asian scene. The question here is whether there is documentation of these participations. What are the most important positions that the teams have obtained and also knowing the reasons for their development. And knowing the reasons for the fluctuations in the results and participations of some teams in the Asian Men's Championships. The most important conclusions reached by this research are that there are many achievements and participations for the teams that have not been documented. They have been documented.

Abstract:
The Playoff Safety Bias occurs when playoff appearances matter more than championships in terms of an individual’s decision-making process when choosing to consume major professional sport from a set of options, referred to as the Sequential Goal Heuristic. This paper (i) demonstrates the potential value of experimental design research in sport management and (ii) provides a consumer-based perspective of playoff structure. Adopting a consumer psychology approach, a 2 (Team performance: good team/bad team) × 3 (Goal: make playoffs every year/ win at least one championship/ maximize number of championships) design was administered via a scenario presented to 152 undergraduate students. The scenario controlled and manipulated the good team/bad team construct by varying the team’s past six season standings. Results revealed that the subjects instructed to maximize the number of playoff appearances had similar estimations of the ideal number of playoff teams, whether fans of a good or bad team. Conversely, of the subjects instructed to either (i) maximize the number of championships won or (ii) maximize the probability of winning at least one championship, fans of good teams over-estimated the optimal number of playoff teams significantly more than fans of bad teams. Implications for future research, practitioner application, and support of similar methods in sport management research are provided.

Winning a national championship is a rare feat; winning five consecutive championships is extraordinary. One such example has recently occurred with the University of Windsor women’s basketball team which competes in the Canadian interuniversity sports league. The team’s head coach, Chantal Vallée, has a combined regular season and playoff winning percentage greater than 80%, including winning five consecutive Canadian national championships. Even more astounding is that before her appointment the school had only four winning seasons in their 50-year history, and had never hosted a playoff game. The purpose of this paper is to explain the remarkable turnaround of this program. This article will provide both the “what” (Enacting The Vision; Athlete Empowerment; Teaching Life Skills; Lifelong Learning and Personal Reflection) and the “how” (blueprint) of the transformation of the University of Windsor women’s basketball into a perennial national contender.

Abstract:
AbstractNowadays many approaches that analyze and predict the results of football matches are based on bookmakers’ ratings. It is commonly accepted that the models used by the bookmakers contain a lot of expertise as the bookmakers’ profits and losses depend on the performance of their models. One objective of this article is to analyze the role of bookmakers’ odds together with many additional, potentially influental covariates with respect to a national team’s success at European football championships and especially to detect covariates, which are able to explain parts of the information covered by the odds. Therefore a pairwise Poisson model for the number of goals scored by national teams competing in European football championship matches is used. Moreover, the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) approach, which is a widely used tool for modeling cluster data, allows to incorporate team-specific random effects. Two different approaches to the fitting of GLMMs incorporating variable selection are used, subset selection as well as a Lasso-type technique, including an L1-penalty term that enforces variable selection and shrinkage simultaneously. Based on the two preceeding European football championships a sparse model is obtained that is used to predict all matches of the current tournament resulting in a possible course of the European football championship (EURO) 2012.

AbstractThe relative age effect (RAE), within the sporting scope, refers to the possible advantages of participation and performance of athletes born in the first months of the year of selection in relation to others within the same age category. The aim of the present study was to investigate the RAE in girls’ volleyball players participating in the U-18 World Championship, analysing the differences between the medal teams and other teams in the tournament, and considering this phenomenon in relation to the continents. Data collection was obtained from the website of the International Volleyball Federation with a sample made of 1654 youth players in the last six world championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017). A greater representation of athletes born in the first months of the year of all the world championships was observed. In the comparison among the continents, it was observed that in Africa, there was a more equal distribution of quartiles compared to America, Asia and Europe. It should be noted that there was a higher percentage of medalist athletes born at the beginning of the year in comparison to the countries that placed in the last three positions of the championship. Therefore, in U-18 female volleyball, there is an advantage to have the closest birth age at the beginning of the competitive biennium.

Abstract:
This article examines fan articulations in response to a Facebook post announcing the results of the final match between G2 Esports and Fun Plus Phoenix (FPX) during the 2019 League of Legends World Championships. Five themes emerged after analysing the data, which are: (1) expressions of congratulations to FPX, the team that won the championship; (2) references to SK Telecom T1, a Korean team that has won the most titles in LoL World Championship history; (3) negative articulations towards G2, implying that they are a bad team; (4) statements discussing tactics and gameplay during the match; and (5) articulations that G2 deserved to lose because of their trash talking against their competitors on social media. This article argues that LoL fans’ comments drew on players’ knowledge of the game, and the fandom’s mediascape, thereby demonstrating the dynamics of transmedia intertextuality within their community. Fan articulations on G2’s poor performance, as well as the tactics and gameplay used by both teams during the finals, were informed by players’ knowledge of how to succeed in LoL. On the contrary, comments that articulated that G2 deserved to lose indicated fans’ familiarity with the Twitter trash talk that took place prior to the final matches. In this case study, LoL fans’ comments exemplify transmedia, with statements about the 2019 World Championship Finals drawing on knowledge from other media.

Research on Football 5-a-side for blind people is usually informative and does not often consider sports performance analysis. This study aimed to verify the existing differences between the 2014 World Championship of Fa5 and the 2016 Paralympic Games, analyzing the action for an effective game, the throws to the goal. For this purpose, a total of 52 matches were analyzed and the statistical analysis unit was all the throws made to the goal during the game (n = 2.227). A descriptive and differential analysis was made between the variables proposed in the study considering the type of competition. The results show the existence of differences between the championships, analyzed explicitly through the variables: Championship phases, Throwing moment, Match status, Starting zone, and Throwing result, as well as the variables Progression type, Throwing zone, Striking situation, Corporal zone, and Striking type. These results highlighted that teams played differently but also set game trends and styles for future competitions.

The parameters for overcoming competitive distance: competitive result in the 100-meter distance; the start reaction time; time for the 15 meters mark; speed to the 15 meters mark; the time of the turn 5 meters up to the wall and 15 meters after the turn; underwater distance and time after the start and after turning; time of “clear” swimming. The obtained results were compared to the characteristics of overcoming the same competitive distance by the finalists of the European Championship 2016. As a result of comparative analysis, statistically, significant differences were found in such parameters of competitive activity as the overall result, overcoming of starting and turning parts, and the distance covered under water after the turn and start. Statistically significant differences were not found in the reaction time to the start signal and in the speed of “clear” swimming. The comparative analysis of the performance characteristics of the European Championships finalists showed possibilities for further improvements of Latvian swimmers. The aim: is to determine the performance parameters of the Latvian best swimmers and compare them with the same parameters of the finalists of the European Championship 2016.

Abstract:
Purpose: to analyze the impact of the use of digital technology in judging to correctly identify the winner in judo competitions. Material and methods. The following methods were used during the research: theoretical analysis and generalization of literature sources and data of the Internet, analysis of video recording, methods of mathematical statistics. Results: based on the recordings of 42 fights of the final block of the European Championship and the Ukrainian Junior Judo Championship on video hosting (You Tube), the analysis of the impact of video replays on the referee's decision was conducted to correctly identify the winner in the competition. In 22 bouts of the European Championship and in 24 bouts of the Ukrainian Championship, the referees made decisions that did not require revision or change. In the other 20 fights of the European Championship and in 18 fights of the Ukrainian Championship, video replays were used. A comparison of the average rates of fights in which digital replays were used or not used with the help of digital technologies showed a statistically significant difference in the performance of refereeing at the European Championship and the Ukrainian Judo Championship among juniors (<0,05). Since t (0,051) < tgr (1,98) the analysis of the refereeing of the European Championship and the Ukrainian Junior Judo Championship can be considered statistically significant. As a percentage of the total number of 42 fights, of which 20 fights – 47,6 % of international judges use video replays and 22 fights – 52,3 % of international judges did not use video replays. Analyzing the championship of Ukraine with a total of 42 fights, of which 18 fights – 42,8 % of judges use video replays and 24 fights – 57,1 % of judges did not use video replays. Conclusions. Analysis of existing digital technologies used in judo refereeing has revealed a set of programs that assist in the competition. The use of digital technologies provides an opportunity to improve the quality of refereeing at various ranks of the competition. The percentage of using video views and the percentage without video views at the European Championship and the Ukrainian Championship is almost the same. This speaks to the quality of judging at these events. This is because the refereeing of the final block allows more qualified judges who did not make mistakes during the refereeing or these mistakes were minimal. Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the confirmation of sudden cardiac arrest by team members during the tasks performed during the three editions of the “Polish Universities’ Championship in Emergency Medicine”. Material and methods: The study was based on an analysis of the evaluation sheets from the “Polish Universities’ Championship in Emergency Medicine” organized in 2015, 2017 and 2019 by the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Bielsko-Biala. The championships were attended by three-person teams of students, which could not include persons with medical training as well as those working in the Emergency Medical Service System. Results: The study showed that during task performance 87.20% of teams correctly confirmed SCA before starting CPR. Correct performance of this proce¬dure was not significantly influenced by the circumstances of SCA, the year of the task, the age of the patient, or the heart rhythm causing the SCA. Conclusions: The knowledge and skills of the participating in the championships team members, regarding confirmation of sudden cardiac arrest, appear to be at a satisfactory level. In order to minimize the risk that future medical personnel, will make while working with the patient mistakes that occur during the performance of tasks, more attention should be paid to the level of education in this important aspect.

Abstract:
Purpose: to analyze the achievements of the participants of the world cadet wrestling championships. Material and methods. The following methods were used in the study: analysis of scientific and methodological information and Internet sources, analysis of competitive activities, methods of mathematical statistics. The careers of the participants of the 2017 and 2018 World Women's Wrestling Championships were analyzed. The total number of participants was 411 athletes. For analysis, all participants were divided into three groups depending on their place at the World Championships: medalists (1-3 place); a group of athletes who took 5th to 10th place (intermediate level); a group of athletes who took 11th place and below (low level). The performances of the participants of the World Cup were analyzed earlier, namely the number of times they took part, won a prize or won competitions among cadets (aged 16-17) in their careers earlier. The comparative analysis allowed to determine how important the results obtained at the cadet level competitions are for the achievements at the world competitions among adults. The initial data of the speeches are taken from the official website of the International Wrestling Federation United World Wrestling (unitedworldwrestling.org). Results. More than half (57,9 %) of the participants in the Women's Wrestling Championship had experience of participating in international cadet competitions, and 42,3 % of them won prizes. It is determined that the percentage of athletes who took part is higher among the participants with a low place, so the figure varies from 58,5 to 54,2 %. At the same time, almost a third of the participants (31,9 %) won the competition among cadets, and only 17,9 % of the group of athletes who took 11th place and below won the competition among cadets. The trend of distribution of athletes who have never won a competition is similar to the previous one, but the percentage of those who failed to do so is much higher: 82,1 % of athletes who took 11th place and below; 77,1 % of athletes took 5th to 10th place and 68,1 % of medalists. Almost the same percentage of athletes won once, regardless of their place at the World Championships (approximately 12-14 %). Only the medalists of the World Cup were able to win two and three times earlier in most cases (about 10 %). It should be noted that four times or more no athlete who took part in the world championship could win. Conclusions. The analysis of performances of sportswomen-participants of the world championship on women's wrestling at the previous stages, in particular at competitions among cadets is carried out. Significantly higher number of participants (in percentage), who won prizes at the World Championships among athletes, who were among the winners three and four times in competitions among cadets. Keywords: women wrestling, competition, result, career.
