Abstract Paleogene magmatism is widespread in the western Alps and its origin is still a matter of debate. It consists of calc-alkaline and shoshonitic suites with mainly granodioritic intrusions in the Internal Zone (northern Italy), andesitic volcanism in the Delphino-Helvetic Zone (French-Swiss domain) and the Esterellite intrusions in Provence. In the External Alpine Zone, the Taveyannaz Sandstones and the Champsaur Sandstones preserve andesitic pebbles and mineral fragments dated at 32 Ma. On the basis of trace-element and isotopic geochemistry (Sr, Nd, Pb and O) of mineral separates (amp

Abstract In the western Alps, to the southeast of the Pelvoux massif (Champsaur-Embrunais-Brianconnais-Queyras transect), the Brianconnais zone consists of the southern tip of the Zone Houillere and small nappes of Mesozoic sediments, emplaced during the Eocene in HP-LT metamorphic conditions. During the Oligocene this tectonic pile was thrusted onto a late Eocene to early Oligocene flexural basin, deformed in low grade metamorphic conditions and belonging to the Ultradauphine zone. This major thrust, called here CBF [Chevauchement Brianconnais Frontal: Tricart 1986] represents the boundary be

Early foredeep successions can yield insight into tectonic processes operating adjacent to and ahead of fledgling orogenic belts but are commonly deformed by the same orogens. We develop a workflow towards stratigraphic understanding of these deformed basins, applied to the Eastern Champsaur Basin of the French Alps. This contains a down-system correlative of the southern-sourced (Eocene–Oligocene) Annot turbidites. These strata are deformed by arrays of west-facing folds that developed beneath the Embrunais–Ubaye tectonic allochthon. The folds vary in geometry through the stratigraphic multil

Abstract. Glacier mass balance (MB) data are crucial to understanding and quantifying the regional effects of climate on glaciers and the high-mountain water cycle, yet observations cover only a small fraction of glaciers in the world. We present a dataset of annual glacier-wide mass balance of all the glaciers in the French Alps for the 1967–2015 period. This dataset has been reconstructed using deep learning (i.e. a deep artificial neural network) based on direct MB observations and remote-sensing annual estimates, meteorological reanalyses and topographical data from glacier inventories. During the 1920s, French surgeon Serge Voronoff became an international sensation for his technique of grafting chimpanzee testicular matter into human testicles. Félicien Champsaur’s 1929 popular speculative fiction novel, Nora, la guenon devenue femme (Nora, the Ape-Woman), imagines the possibilities of human-ape ontological and erotic proximity suggested by Voronoff’s practice of gland xenotransplantation, or transspecies transplantation. This article puts Nora and the early twentiethcentury science of ductless glands (ovaries, testicles, thyroid, thalamus, etc.) into conversation with tran
