Full textSecond Chance was born as an alternative business idea to the clothing trade based on a sustainable approach, giving second chance to clothing in good condition and developing a highly profitable online trading market. Two problems were identified, the first one, people who have a large number of obsolete garments, which are in good condition and they wish they could get rid of them at the change of a monetary income, the second one, there are people who would be willing to buy garments second-hand quality at a low price and in good condition since they do not have enough cash to purchase the new garments, so Second Chance develops a web platform in order to address these identified problems, demonstrating a practical and safe space to buy. The company's potential customers affected are a socio-economic sector B and C with a modern and progressive lifestyle. The market to which the business focuses is an existing one, however, the value proposition of the project hopes to promote sustainable fashion as an alternative for consumption. For this Second Chance has a highly qualified team to perform in each of the administrative units. It is projected to generate a high profitability index at the end of the fifth year of operations, as well as, after analyzing two scenarios, optimistic and pessimistic, positive results of high profitability and high probability of viability for the project are obtained.

This thesis is about the philosophical and scientific significance of chance. Specifically, I ask whether there is a single notion of chance that both plays a well-defined scientific role and proves useful for various philosophical projects. I argue that there is, but that this notion of chance is importantly different from the one that we usually come across in the philosophical literature. In the first chapter, "Chance, Indeterminacy, and Explanation", I argue against the common and influential view that chances are those probabilities that arise when the fundamental laws are indeterministic. The problem with this view, I claim, is not that it conflicts with some antecedently plausible metaphysics of chance, but rather that it renders the distinction between chance and other sorts of probability incapable of playing any scientifically significant role. I suggest an alternative view, according to which chances are the probabilities that play a certain explanatory role-they are probabilities that explain associated frequencies. In the second chapter, "Chance, Explanation, and Measure", I build on the view that chances are the probabilities that play a certain explanatory role by developing an account of non-fundamental chances-chances that arise when the fundamental laws are deterministic. On this account, non-fundamental chances are objective measures over relevant classes of alternative possibilities. In the third chapter, "Chance and Counterfactuals", I show how the sort of chances I have argued for can play an important role in a very different sort of philosophical project. According to a number of recent arguments, one consequence of our current scientific theories is that most ordinary counterfactuals are not true. I argue that the best response to these arguments makes use of the non-fundamental chances that I have argued for in the first two chapters of the dissertation.

Full textAcknowledged by the end of the 19th century, the loss of chance is nothing else than the prejudice recognizing the Joss of the probability of a positive event occurring. Synonymous of coincidence when used in its singular form but synonymous of probabilities when plural, the chance is in framed by law. The loss of a chance is a repairable prejudice as long as the victim of the harmful attitude shows the gathering of a few substantive conditions. To this effect, the notion of causality ought to be given a particular consideration. The chain of causation must be established between the objectionable behavior and the loss of chance. Hence, the loss of chance prejudice has its own autonomous causation and shall not be mistaken with the entire damage. Furthermore, the chance must be « real and serious » in order to be repairable, thus excluding the low chances on reparation. The victim will then obtain a compensation equal to the loss of chance. Having a legal value, the chance must be lost forever in order to be compensated. Indeed, if the victim claims chance that might still be reached, its compensation will be excluded. Even though it has been rigorously defined, the loss of chance has been brought down to the holdall status, as a legal reaction as if it were the last possibility to obtain compensation. In this perspective, the loss of chance has bypassed the causality, yet essential, in order to award to this prejudice a moral connotation whether than a legal one. The loss of chance undergoes the consequences of the evolution of the civil liability concept and the influence of the precautionary principle. Taking perspective on the loss of chance's definition, this concept has even enable the question of the existence of this legal theory, which encounters a relative success in the European legal systems. Trapped in a legal swirl, the loss of chance has become a compensation reflex, putting all the chances on the same level. By an unexpected revision of the jurisprudence, the Cour de Cassation (Supreme Court), has integrated the reference the "reasonable chance" notion. Thus, the loss of chance finds its original place back, compensating only the substantive chances. This work will aim at demonstrating the impact of the legal revolution on the loss of chance. Whether it is the effectiveness of its legal regime or the stability of its enforcement, the loss of chance has an interest in embracing the legal renewal through strict and pragmatic propositions

The research Times of Chance: the discontinuous temporality and the thematization of chance in contemporary film analyses how time has been represented in contemporary film narratives. In order to give a panorama of temporality as it is perceived nowadays, first we discuss the changes related to the way modern western society has experienced time since the late nineteenth century, taking into consideration the loss of faith in progress as well as in the ideals of modernity. Based on this main idea, we then approach the thematization of chance, which we believe to be directly linked to what we call discontinuous temporality, because of the disbelief in the modern linear order and in the idea that one event causes the next (and so forth). Therefore, in the narratives - Love`s a Bitch and 21 grams, by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and The Lovers of the Artic Circle and Sex and Lucía, by Julio Medem, - we analize some of the possible representations of time in our age. These films, which break the linear timeline and have chance as a trigger of stories, are considered emblematic of some of the ways current temporality might be faced.

Full textChance is an heterogeneous notion in administrative law. The manifestations of its different meanings are indeed quite abundant in the sense that the coincidences, the probabilities and the risk that chance refers to are full of tangible applications. Their effects are equally, and unsurprisingly, very varied which means that the permeability of administrative law towards them is quite unique, depending on whether they are considered to be beneficial or adverse. So, probabilities illustrate how chance can be a useful tool for the administrative judge when pronouncing a judgment, whereas coincidences and risk both reflect back on the occurrence of events or unpredictable phenomenons which one would aim to avoid. Inspite of all the subtleties deployed by chance in administrative law, it nevertheless seems to be a notion, the unity of which appears to be at the study stage of its function. Chance is then a functional notion, the vocation of which is to be used more and more often by the administrative judge in order to improve the compensation awarded to citizens both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view

Full textThis thesis develops the Strategic Plan of Chancay Port, which is based on Professor Fernando D'Alessio’s methodology. The Chancay Port has significant comparative advantages such as its near to 20 m bathymetry, its strategic geographical location in the central coast of Peru with proximity to Callao Port, the Jorge Chavez International Airport, and the inter-oceanic corridor of the IIRSA’s Amazonas Center, and its easy access to the Northern Panamerican Highway. This analysis proposes strategies to exploit these advantages for the port to become a significant and competitive player in the national port system. It is also defined a vision based on an assessment of the current and future situation of the port. In addition, it is defined a (a) the mission, as a promoter of the organization towards the future desired situation, (b) values, and (c) code of ethics. These three elements, together with the vision, will guide and regulate the actions of the Port of Chancay. The implementation of the Strategic Plan would be undertaken by the private company Terminales Portuarios Chancay S.A. who must work with the National Port Authority, the Chancay Municipality, and the Lima Provinces Regional Government. This way Chancay Port can reach its potential and be established as an efficient and decentralized alternative to the merchandise traffic of international trade in Peru becoming the only private port for public use in the country. The proposed strategies are of the type (a) intensive-product development for the new infrastructure to be built with the port terminal and the Logistics Activities Zone, (b) verticalintegration forward, for the development of the railway linking the Chancay Port with the Central Railway, and (c) specific-internal for the partnerships that should be generated with the local government for the integration of the port with the city. Six log-term goals have been defined to pretend fulfill the vision of the Port of Chancay, three of which are related to infrastructure development and the other three related to market share. Of these long-term objectives, 26 short-term goals have been defined whose performance and achievement will be monitored through the Balanced Scorecard.

Full textThe subject of this anthropology thesis is the iconography of the prehispanic peruvian Chancay culture, focuses on graphics and iconology. Our research is based around a simultaneous study of two archeological objects: ceramics and textiles, found exclusively in burial places. The methodic examination of the corpus of the study (471 pieces), drawn up from excavations reports and from seven museums collections visited in Lima, have helped define the graphical repertory of the Chancay culture and highlighted 14 similar patterns throughout Andean time and space. The anlysis of these graphics, throughout colonial chronicles, ecclesistical writtings, ethnohistoric documents and works on anthropological fields, has shown that all of these patterns express an identical idea: fertility and fecundity, closely associated with death-ritual and ancestors cults. The examination of several tombs, reconstructed with the help of the peruvian archeologist Hans Hork-Heimer's archives, identifies a well ordered display of the different artefacts around the funeral bundle defining a delimited space. The contemporary practice of the "mesa" or votive offerings, used on the occasion of fertility rituals and funeral rites, presents some information that we find in the study funeral context. This ritual table is laid for ancestors' spirit who are the guarntors of the land's fertility, animals and humans fecundity in the Andean cosmology. We therefore propose that the Chancay tomb should be seen and understood as a "mesa"

We study sample approximations of chance constrained problems through the sample average approximation (SAA) approach and prove the related convergence properties. We discuss how to use the SAA method to obtain good candidate solutions and bounds for the optimal value of the original problem. In order to tune the parameters of SAA, we apply the method to two chance constrained problems. The first is a linear portfolio selection problem with returns following a multivariate lognormal distribution. The second is a joint chance constrained version of a simple blending problem. We conclude with a more demanding application of SAA methodology to the determination of the minimum provision an economic agent must have in order to meet a series of future payment obligations with sufficiently high probability.

Views of long-term environmental change often rely on linear narratives of growth and decline. Last chance sites have been described as offering a limited window of time to witness landscapes and seascapes that are deemed to exist within varying states of vanishing, captivating audiences with visible and timely sights of change. This thesis questions the agency of representing the future of these sites and calls for a strategy to look beyond end conditions to link less visible cycles with the roles of surrounding industry. On the coast of Hudson Bay, the self-declared "polar bear capital of the world" is discussed in relation to last chance sites due to an industry that has become reliant on visitors observing the changing environmental attractions of the area. This project examines how the northern town of Churchill, Manitoba developed at an intersection of migration between far reaching industrial and ecological systems. To the north the Arctic is opening with decreasing sea ice, and to the south an infrastructural rail line spurred the transformation of territory from a geographically concentrated urban population. Conceived of as a linear northern expansion project for future growth, the reality over time is a nonlinear emergence and decline of economic pursuits. The design strategy resists focusing on short-term development models by bringing public attention and cyclical activity to a broader territory. New linkages negotiate scattered and fluctuating industries such as forestry, mining, and energy production that support urban growth and a regional strategy focuses attention on overlooked sites, offering platforms to locate discourse on the role of development in longterm change across systems.

Full textChance is a key figure in our daily lives, since we are uncertain about events in our future that may affect our health, economic stability, or personal interactions. It comes, therefore, as no surprise that chance affects a human life deeply -- as deep as a person's convictions, beliefs, and other matters central to someone‟s life-plan. If she had not missed her train, she would never have met her spouse. Had she lived in other times, she may have been a black slave in Georgia instead of an American citizen with equal rights.

Full textThis study focuses on a group of African adult students who were registered at St. Anthony's Adult Education Centre on the East Rand in order to complete the secondary education they did not complete at school. It investigates why adult students perceive education, and the matric examination in particular, to be of importance. To this end, an empirical survey was carried out to approach an understanding of the views and perceptions adult students had of themselves and what they were doing and why the empirical survey looks at the question of matric "from below" so to speak, through the eyes of the adult students. In the belief that education is about people and their needs, it is hoped that the empirical survey will bring us closer to the adult students involved. However, to examine the views and perceptions of the adult students in isolation would deny them the contextual richness that gives them life. For this reason, the empirical survey is preceded by a theoretical discourse which offers three perspectives or ways of understanding the education system for Africans: education as a means towards social advancement; education as the reproduction of cultural capital and education as social reproduction. It is hoped that these diverse explanations may not only give insight into the views and experiences of the adult students who took part in the empirical survey, but also offer contrasting thoughts on the role of the education system and the matric examination in particular. Indeed, in the light of the question asked by the title, it is hoped that the contrasting perspectives will contribute to an understanding of the nature of the "second chance" adult students believe they have by studying towards matric.
