Abstract:
Second Chance was born as an alternative business idea to the clothing trade based on a sustainable approach, giving second chance to clothing in good condition and developing a highly profitable online trading market. Two problems were identified, the first one, people who have a large number of obsolete garments, which are in good condition and they wish they could get rid of them at the change of a monetary income, the second one, there are people who would be willing to buy garments second-hand quality at a low price and in good condition since they do not have enough cash to purchase the new garments, so Second Chance develops a web platform in order to address these identified problems, demonstrating a practical and safe space to buy. The company's potential customers affected are a socio-economic sector B and C with a modern and progressive lifestyle. The market to which the business focuses is an existing one, however, the value proposition of the project hopes to promote sustainable fashion as an alternative for consumption. For this Second Chance has a highly qualified team to perform in each of the administrative units. It is projected to generate a high profitability index at the end of the fifth year of operations, as well as, after analyzing two scenarios, optimistic and pessimistic, positive results of high profitability and high probability of viability for the project are obtained.

Abstract:
Ireland experienced an unprecedented arrival of immigrants during the years of economic prosperity. The new diversity was met with divided public opinion towards non-Irish and an increasingly selective immigration policy. The media, as a main contributor to public discourse, play an important role in the construction of migrant images and therefore have a profound impact on such developments. Employing a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, this study examines whether different immigrant groups have the same chance of favourable or unfavourable portrayal in daily newspapers. Based on the most frequent roles and topics associated with Poles, Nigerians and Chinese, a selection of newspaper articles is subjected to in-depth analysis. The overarching result that there is not one image of the Irish media illustrates how difficult, if not impossible, it is to arrive at findings that can be generalised. Individual newspapers are found to pursuit varying and sometimes covert strategies in the representation of immigrants. It is further shown that immigrants who are perceived as culturally closer to Irishness have a higher chance of favourable portrayal than those who are perceived as culturally more distant. Some commonly accepted perceptions of immigrants are unmasked as myths.

Abstract:
This body of work is an experimental approach to the exploitation and anticipation of watercolour as a medium, and its relationship to paper as an object. My focus is on simplifying the landscape form as much as possible with the least amount of process or brushstrokes necessary, while still being recognisable as a landscape. This body of work became a study of the immediacy of paint, with the mark making process leading to atmospheric works that became representations of the experience of landscape.Using the most transient of mediums, there is a focus on the immediacy in first impressions and capturing the experience. My process and experimental works are based on recapturing our affinity to the landscape and on delving into the grandeur of water and reflection through an over exaggerated use of luminosity and colour. There is a reach for the sublime in water through the process of paint and the experimental nature of my haphazard, yet still somewhat linear recordings in mark making. All this whittled down to a process using the barest of necessities in water, pigment, paper and a single brush. This transient form of image making is reminiscent of one normally associated with, and to some extent referencing, journeys through exotic lands. Both my body of work and this paper, see their theoretical foundation in delving into the history of the sketch, where its invention coincided with speed and transience on the edge of modernity, with a strong focus on reflection and my fascination with water. The central ideas of my body of work focus on water, both as a medium and as a subject, its relationship to light and colour, and how, for me, it became a malleable and experimental art process of mark making.

Coleman, Michele Harryette. "A Chance for Change: The Role of Trust in Foster Care." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33784.

Full text
Abstract:
The Child Welfare System is faced with an increasing number of children in foster care with a decreasing number of foster homes available for placement. By interviewing adults who were former foster children, this study examines the significance of one caring adult in the life of a foster child. Erik Erikson states that in the first stage of psychosocial development a child learns trust vs. mistrust. For many children entering foster care, this first stage of development has not been achieved, given their experiences in their biological families. In order to protect themselves during this time of mistrust, children exhibit behaviors designed to keep adults at a distance. This poses a problem for foster parents who must try to develop trust with their foster children in an effort to change their behavior. What if anything can be done to help these children learn to trust? The participants were asked to focus on specific behaviors at least one caring adult demonstrated that helped them as foster children, move through their past experiences of mistrust to a place of trusting that caring adult. The concept of attachment theory provided a foundation for the study.
Master of Science

Dimmock, Paul. "Knowledge, chance, and contrast." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3202.

Abstract:
The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the rise of contextualist theories of knowledge ascriptions (and denials). Contextualists about ‘knows' maintain that utterances of the form ‘S knows p' and ‘S doesn't know p' resemble utterances such as ‘Peter is here' and ‘Peter is not here', in the sense that their truth-conditions vary depending upon features of the context in which they are uttered. In recent years, contextualism about ‘knows' has come under heavy attack. This has been associated with a proliferation of defences of so-called invariantist accounts of knowledge ascriptions, which stand united in their rejection of contextualism. The central goal of the present work is two-fold. In the first instance, it is to bring out the serious pitfalls in many of those recent defences of invariantism. In the second instance, it is to establish that the most plausible form of invariantism is one that is sceptical in character. Of course, the prevailing preference in epistemology is for non- sceptical accounts. The central conclusions of the thesis might therefore be taken to show that – despite recent attacks on its plausibility – some form of contextualism about ‘knows' must be correct. However, this project is not undertaken without at least the suspicion that embracing (a particular form of) sceptical invariantism is to be preferred to embracing contextualism. In the course of the discussion, I therefore not only attempt to rebut some standard objections to sceptical invariantism, but also to reveal – in at least a preliminary way – how the sceptical invariantist might best argue for the superiority of her account to that of the contextualist.
